I don't know if that guy at the Apple store is stupid because frankly, I don't know him.
But seriously, if he can work better with a mouse then he should use one. I'm sure there are still some people out there who don't like to send email and type a letter with a typewriter then put that piece of paper into another piece of paper (envelope), carry that to the post office which puts those pieces of papers from one truck to another to finally get it to their destination. You get the idea.
The bigger issue is that people don't realize that they get accustomed to a device that is a a compromise to begin with, the mouse. Just think about it what it takes to scroll down in a window on your screen.
In perfect world: You would take your hand and scroll down the window (or tell the computer the command)
Instead, you take your hand, grab a thing (A) that has nothing to do with the window. Now you move that thing A and you see that it corresponds to another thing (B) on the screen, the cursor. No you have to move that second thing on to a third thing ( C), the scrollbar. And now, instead of moving down the scrollbar, you have to move it up in order to move the actual page down. How many un-intuitive (or counter-intuitive) steps does the brain have to learn and process? This is insane.
People are used to it and they don't question it as long as there is no better solution.
Instead of moving a thing that moves a thing that moves another thing. You just move THE thing. The original solution is touch the thing that you want to move. That's why kids use the iPad or iPhone with no problem. It is intuitive and you don't have to learn a compromise. The Trackpad is at least half way there.
Remember when Apple changed the direction of the scroll bar recently. Another great example, where people get p**** when something get easier but they want to keep their old way "moving something up in order to move something down".
I don't say that the Trackpad is perfect (it has other issues) and yes it requires some "un-learning" of old habits. It is still a compromise. My first computer was a Commodore64 about 25 years ago and I used mice all those years but I didn't' have a problem dropping that "thing" in a second.

  • Adobe SendNow - What is the optimal size for custom logos?

I just tried to upload a custom logo (800x200) and it seemed to be stuck up in the top left corner, with a large amount of blank white screen.
What is the optimal size for this please, and how do I centre a smaller logo?
It is of course entirely possible I will need to make one in PS - not a problem - but the right sizes would be helpful info please.
    Many Thanks

That is what I read too - but when I uploaded one it got tucked up in the top left corner of the "custom" setup thumbnail.
Perhaps it is just a glitch in that dialogue, but it certainly looked as if there was a raft of space to the right & underneath.
Still, probably Pilot Error so I will recheck - thank you Dave.

  • What are the optimal values for mac and arp timeout values

    Hi Guys.
What are the best values for "mac address-table aging-time" and "arp timeout" by following scenarios?:
    - single sg300-10 as layer3-switch with a maximum of 10 local (direct connected) hosts
    - and a 3750x-stack with 100 local hosts + hsrp with a other stack of the same sort
or for asa 5520 as internet gateway for 500 clients?
I use at the moment a mac aging-time from 300 seconds and a arp timeout from 3600 seconds.
    Is this o.k.?
    Thanks.

    Marvel.
As far as enhancing the CLI, it will of course be enhanced when new firmware releases provide new features. As far as making it more IOS-like, best to my knowledge, no.  The only other supported CLI on the SB switches are on the SX500 series and SX200E series which the CLI are all consistent. If you bought a SX500 series the commands are nearly identical minus the different feature sets.

  • What is the optimal resolution for pdfs?

I have PDF downloads on my website and would appreciate some advice on the optimal quality of the files - bearing in mind visual quality & download speed.

"Smallest File Size" as seen in Acrobat Pro's Distiller.  That usually means 72ppi / 300dpi.

  • What's the optimal output for web?

i have quicktime Pro - i'm trying to extract video footage from a dv file (my cinematographer's reel) and post it on my website. is MPEG4 the best i can do? and if so, how do i optimize that? if the footage was shot in dv - do i set it at 29 frames in the export Options? what about "key frames" - do i set that at 24 (default) or some other number? looking to get a decent movie file that doesn't look like rubic's cube w/ all the pixel squares.
    Thanks!

    Thanks Jon,
just a few questions to your reply:
    H.264 would provide
better quality at given data rate and scales much
better but requires QT 7 for both you and your
    viewers.
Do most people have QT 7 at this point or is it best to post the movie in the most accessible format and sacrifice some rez? My H.264 is greyed out - perhaps because i'm not using HD footage? any idea?
    Optimization
depends on many things such as target encode display
    dimensions, amount of storage space/bandwith
available, and even the actual content itself. Since
you have not indicated your goals here, it is
    difficult to provide concrete guidelines.
i'm not that technically advanced to know the answer to this. i'm basically posting this to iWeb - i have maybe half a gig of storage on my website so i don't have to be that frugal. just want something to be decent quality but probably no more than 20 MB
    In the absence of other,
overriding needs, it is generally best to set the
    frame rate to "current."
    what about "key
frames" - do i set that at 24 (default) or some other
    number?Key frame rate is
dependent on the content. Rapid motion, transitions,
and the like require more key frames while slow
motion, non-changing scenes require fewer. Generally
speaking it may be best to use the "Automatic"
setting for "average" videos. This setting applies
the basic "Rule of Five" or a frame rate equal to
five time the frame rate. The advantage here is, if
there is a large inter-frame change in data, QT will
insert extra frames as/if needed. Basically, the more
key frames, the better the quality but larger the
file size or greater the compression between frames.
that makes sense. i don't have any slow motion so i'd like to make it look
    as smooth as possible.
    Thanks,

    looking to get a
decent movie file that doesn't look like rubic's cube
    w/ all the pixel
    squares.Pixilation can still
occur with MPEG-4 when target compression is too high
(i.e., the data rate drops too low for the encode
display dimensions and content). This is one of the
ares where H.264 really stands out. It can usually
    produce fairly good HD 720p (1280 x 720 progressive
main profile) quality at even iPod "LC" compatible
    data rates.

  • What's the "optimal" resolution for the Intel Mini's?

I was wondering how high the resolution can go on the intel mini's before the OS X UI starts to lose it's "responsiveness". When I mean "responsivenss", I mean stuff like expose and Dashboard maintaing a smooth animation etc. Thanks.

I'm more curious than anything, though I'm interested in an intel iBook when it comes out (likely to use an intel chipset for graphics.).
I was just wonder how the UI experience felt, even at high resolutions. I know that the general consensus is that the intel base macs have a much more reponsive UI but I know that stuff like expose animations on the PPC Mini's can get a bit juddery on a high resolution.
I don't run anything heavy like games but I like it when the UI feels like it's not on sandpaper.
I just tried a new iMac at a local reseller. Everything seemed more responsive in general. Resizing was nearly rock solid even on complicated windows such as iTunes, minimizing was smooth (even with the 'genie' effect) but for some odd reason the expose and dashboard animations seemed a bit choppy to me. Which is a bit confounding since it seemed to do everything else well. Maybe it was because the iMac at the store was using monitor spanning with a cinema display. Intel sure improves the UI experence.
The improvement is not compelling enough to get a new mini. The UI is decent on my current system. It's nice to see that Apple continues to improve the UI speed on the PPC side of things.
I know that if I get a Intel iBook, resolution wouldn't matter becuase it would be fixed and relatively low. I was just curious if there was any UI performance degradation when resolutions go up.

  • HT1665 Left my charger at friends what else can I use for iphone?

What can I use to charge my iphone besides the charger it came with. Left mine at friends

Do you have the cable?  If so you can use any charger that has a USB port or plug it into a computer USB port.  If you have an iPad or iPod, you can charge it using those chargers.

  • What else do I need for ES Bundle HCM Master data

    Hi
This may be a silly question but i'm chasing my tail a little here.
I need to see the services described in the es workplace for HCM master data ES bundle. I am under the impression that if I have the appropriate Enhancement pack installed in my SAP ERP system then I should have  access already to these services.
The Enterprise extension EA-HR  is active. We are on EHP4 for SAP ERP yet I cannot see any of the services described using SOAMANAGER or SICF.
Have I missed the point completely or is there a businees function or something else that needs activating before I xcan see these services?
    Thanks
    Mark

    Thanks
Specifically I was after service operation EmployeeBasicDataByEmployeeQueryResponse_In which is defined as
Software Component Version ESA ECC-SE 604
    Namespace http://sap.com/xi/EA-HR/SE/Global
    Direction inbound
    Mode synchronous
It belongs to service interface Manage Employee In
I would assume that I would see this in SICF.
I have loaded EA-HR XI Content for 7.0 and see specific async service interfaces defined there but not the one above

  • I just ordered an iPad mini 2.  What else will I need for smooth sailing?

I know there's a new style charging design on it. While I know enough to buy a cover right away, are there other synching type things I will need, or charging devices?

I've never had an iPad before.  I've got an iTouch and a couple of Macbook Pros.   I don't have an iPhone.  I have a stupid phone.  Fits my needs.
But I keep reading about some new design on the new iPhones and Air/ipad mini 2 that will require something different.    Are you saying there's really nothing else I have to buy?  That would be nice.

  • Whats the best Mac Hardware for Logic?

    I'd appreciate input:
I'm going to upgrade my Mac system. Is a Quad G5, 2.3 GHZ worth the money? Or can I get just as much Logic bang for my buck with a dual G5 2 GHZ, as long as I have plenty of RAM. Wehat is the ideal amount of RAM to have (OK - I know, as much as I can get, but how much RAM do I need to be able to handle a moderate to large amount of tracks/ plug-ins etc.)
    What would YOU reccomend?
    Thanks!

Is there anyone out there using Logic on a quad?
there is, i am sure they will reply here with their experiences.
by way of measuring what you can do, i am still on a G4 1 Ghz DP (state of the art when i got it) and i can manage pretty big orchestral lay-ups with a lot of plug-ins and audio tracks. i rarely have to freeze, but i do try to work efficiently and i am beginning to feel hedged by lack of CPU headroom. lack of memory too - undo histories have been...welll...my undoing.
that said, my lay-ups are as big as i want them and i am only just feeling the squeeze. i would have said you would have to work really hard to get a new G5 to its limit. a quad is overkill unless you want to go down the massive library road (ie EQLSO which would still recommend that you networked FOUR computers even if they were the fastest).

  • What operating system is required for Logic Pro 9?

Just bought a Mac Pro with 10.7.5 Lion already installed. I want to know If I need to change the operating system to support Apple Logic Pro 9?
I have'nt bought Logic Pro 9 yet, but I bought Pro Tools 10 and would like to have both Logic and Pro Tools on the same computer. There both picky about
which operating system to use. Which operating system would support both?

I think sticking with Lion 10.7x is your best bet, you will find easier going with both Protools & Logic. Some report problems with Mountain Lion and Logic.
Check and make sure you don't need the 10.7.5 supplemental update, if you do, INSTALL it otherwise Logic won't recognize some AU plugins.

  • What happened to the controls in QuickTime?

I like the new look of QuickTime, but what happened to the controls for editing video? I used to be able to hit the "I" key for inpoint, and the "O" key for endpoint, and then hit delete to remove that section. Now, I have to drag the selection tool around to do the cut. This is very awkward, especially when I need to fine-tune the areas where the cut is to be made.
Are there any tips on doing some more fine-tuned edits in QuickTime?

I second SwagMeyer's request. He's not asking for any advanced trimming feature that would make things more difficult for the simple user: the IN and OUT shortcuts were presents and "invisible" also in QuickTimePro 7 and they would not affect that easiness of the application.

  • New stream, low upload rate... Optimal Settings for streaming games?

I've been fiddling around with FMLE for the past few days/weeks and trying to find the best quality to stream quality games such as Bad Comapny 2, Starcraft 2, Mass Effect 2, etc
I am able to play games at max settings, but when I do the stream will lag so I choose to make the settings low enough so I can stream.
The only probably right now is they seem quite blurry/pixelated - which is probably due to my upload rate of 0.8mbps from SpeedTest.net1
    My specs are:
Resolution of 1680x1050 (Most of my games like Bad Company 2 are played at 1280x720 windowed mode)
    i5-2500K
    GTX 560 Ti
    12GB Ram
    1TB Hard Disk Space
    Windows 7 64bit
Upload rate of 0.8mbps (and 5.0mbps download incase it is needed)
http://www.justin.tv/mrshotzzzz/videos - Bad Company 2 at the moment... There seems to be a LOT of blurryness, but it seems quite smooth.
http://www.twitch.tv/mrshotzzzz/b/293073526?id=293073526&channel=mrshotzzzz - This is my latest... (skip to 1:25 where I configure it to be good)
When I fullscreen it, around the edges mainly, I see it is pixleted.
I use 1280x720 input, and 640x360 output with 800kbps. Is it possible to make it better?
Would an output of 640x360 with a bitrate of 650kbps be better?
Would an output of 854x480 be better?
Could changing my input size to 1920x1080 make my quality better?
tl;dr What is the optimal settings for a good specced computer, but with a low upload rate (0.8mbps)?

    Hi,
In iChat 3 or iChat 4 setting System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming to 1.5Mbps is quite important.
In Tiger (10.4.x) the Automatic Setting here is read as Zero by iChat and can cause issues even when the Speed is high enough.
In Leopard for iChat 4 this Automatic setting is read as 384k by iChat (although this is the Minimum for a 4 way Video chat it may still cap your Internet Speed).
If you have to change this iChat will need a restart if open.
The real controlling factor is the Upload speed the Internet Connection speed has.
There is one other place to help with the Bandwidth/Internet Connection speed.
This is in iChat menu > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth Limit drop down.
This can be changed during A/V chat and changes to the Bit rate iChat is using is shown in the Connection Doctor (Video Menu).
This is best used when Really Fast Buddies (Processors and Internet Speeds) can tend to "Over-run" lesser speeded Buddies. It can also help if your ISP manages the Bandwidth/Internet Connection speed making it run slower or faster at different times of the day (Also look at Fair Usage Policies).
There is no independent way to reduce the Frame rate that would have a direct effect on this.
There are other apps that do use less demanding picture quality that in turn effects the Frame rate which can effect the Bandwidth needed/Used
    See this link http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/page5.html#_other
Scroll to numbers 5 through 8 for Apps, 9 through 12 for Web Browser options.
    13 is a PC app.
14 & 15 works in Video only to MSN Buddies.
The list does not have a reference to the Yahoo Beta 3 for Mac

  • Optimal Setup for New Time Capsule with Wireless AC

I'm curious to see what the hypotehtical optimal setup for my Time Capsule.  I understand that wireless speeds depend on a ton of factors and that part of getting the best connection is just trying different options.  I have a new Time Capsule that's connected to the following devices: iPhone 5S; new MacBook Air with wireless AC; old iMac from 2007; old AirPort Express that only supports b/g and a newish Apple TV that supports wireless N, I believe.  I was connecting to the network (which was not designated with the 5ghz) and I recently chose the option to label the 5ghz.  I'm using that now to stream music with the new iPhone and the Apple TV with no problems, but I have no longer have the option of using the old Airport express because it's an old one.  I'm thinking of just getting a new Airport Express and leaving it at that, but wanted to know if anyone has some thoughts on this.  I'm sure there's a more concise and direct way to ask this question, but my knowledge is pretty limited here.  Thanks in advance.

The Time Capsule is already set up for optimal performance when you open up the box.
You can assign a separate name to the 5 GHz network and point devices that are capable to that network. This works well if the device is located close to the Time Capsule.
But, 5 GHz signals are much weaker than 2.4 GHz signals, so once you move a room or two away, or the signal has to pass through several walls, the 2.4 GHz will be stronger.....and probably faster as well.
But...your device will try to stay locked on the 5 GHz network since you set it up that way.
This type of setup may or may not work best for you.  For most users, it is simpler and more effective to use the default settings on the Time Capsule to have both bands use the same network name.
Then, your wireless devices will automatically connect to the signal with the best quality. Best quality may not be the fastest signal since there are lot of factors involved with signal quality. But, if you think about it a bit more, don't you want to have your wireless device connect to the signal with the best quality?
Some users swear by assigning a separate name to the 5 GHz band. I'm not one of them, but If it works well for them and they are happy, then there is no reason to change.
An older AirPort on your network is going to drag down the speeds. You need the new AirPort Express, or better yet an AirPort Extreme if you want to be able to extend the new 802.11ac signal.
