Mouse will only right click

Today I started up my macbook and found that when I went to use the mouse ever click was opening the context menu. I tried turning off my mighty mouse and used the track pad only, and still had this problem. So I turned off the right click in the mouse preferences, and restarted.. and it temporarily fixed the problem, but when I put a blank CD into the drive to burn a CD the mouse returned to right clicks only. I have also noticed that if I click on the airport icon, or any other icon in the top menu, the icon's context menus cycle through from the left to the right as if each icon's context menu is being opened. This is very frustrating and had completely prevented me from using my mac book at all. Has any one had this problem before, or does anyone have a solution.
I have all system updates installed, and no new hardware or software has been installed before this happened; it literally happened overnight.
Scott

If you don't use the mouse at all, does the trackpad behave normally? Are you clicking by tapping the trackpad twice or by using the trackpad button?
Is there another computer you could use the mouse with?

  • My mouse only right clicks

I am having a problem with my mouse it seems to only right click. I checked in the setting menu but doesn't work the only solution I can figure out is to restart but mouse messes up after a few minutes. with the mouse problems I cannot do anything to the point I am posting this on my macbook. any help would be great.
    thanks

It's not an ideal solution but one thing you can try is System Preferences > Mouse > uncheck Secondary click.
This will disable the right click function.  When you want to do a "right click" you can hold down the Control key as you left click.  This will create the secondary click function.

  • MBP not turning on and only right clicking?

    Hello all!
I own a MBP purchased in November 2009. Yesterday after it had been closed for maybe an hour after use it would only right click when I used the trackpad. No matter where I clicked, and later we plugged in a mouse and it would still only right click. I then decided to re-start the computer as most problems I have are fixed when I restart. After it was turned off it would not turn back on, the battery was quite low. I took it to my friend and she got it to turn on (I guess after we pressed the power button enough times it just worked) once it was on we tried clicking and it still only right clicked. Since it was running on reserve battery power (which it does often, 95% of the time I run it down to reserve then charge it back up fully or almost fully) we plugged it in for the night. I realized that the fan was not turning off, as when I usually shut it, the fan will turn off almost instantly and even doing a lot of things at once it would only take a minute or too. I waited at least 10 minutes and the fan was still running and it was plugged in. In the morning the fan was not on because it had turned itself off. It was almost like the computer thought that the lid was still open and maybe it wasn't charging (but the battery lights say it is full) Does anyone know what I can do about this?

  • Mouse will scroll right, left, and down not up. happens every once and a while.

mighty mouse will scroll right, left, and down, but not up. happens every once and a while. have wiped with alcohol, but no help this time.

As Barry says, wiping with liquids is not advisable.   However, with a similar problem this is how I approached it.
    1.   Disconnect the mouse.
    2.   Dampen (not soak) a cotton bud in alcohol.  (I prefer whisky).   Then squeeze between fingers to ensure it is not wet.
    3.   Rub the bud against the ball for a minute or so to ensure all parts of the ball have contact with the cotton bud.
    4.   Then rub vigorously on clean white paper for a couple of minutes in a figure of eight fashion and tap it every now and then.  I have seen quite large peices of fluff removed this way
5    Allow twenty minutes or so for the alcohol to finally evapourate to ensure there is no moisture.
    6    Reconnect the mouse.
Having said all this, after three years or so your mouse will probably need to be replaced anyway.   Apple appear to be moving away from corded mice and therein lies another problem.   My experience with the Apple charger, Apple batteries and other premium batteries has not been good.   Batteries seem to run down at a rate of 10% per day even though its use is limited to about three hours daily.
    You have been warned.

  • My mouse will only scroll one way

My mouse will only scroll down and not up, it has done this before and self cured after a few days. any suggestions?

I assume you are referring to a mouse with the scroll button/wheel in the middle?
I have seen this a few times with more than one such mouse. I have "cured" it by putting some pressure (e.g. considerably more than normal) downward on that scroll wheel and moving it in the direction that it is no longer moving in (e.g. scrolls only down but not up, or vice versa). By applying a fair amount of pressure (don't break it but it's much more pressure than normal for a short time), it seems to suddenly "catch" and then works fine.

  • In Facebook only(not in Word) , when I type a message the mouse cannot be right clicked

There are 4 accounts in our home computer. I upgraded to FF3.6.13. Two of the 4 accounts worked perfectly. The third account wouldn't connect to FF (said something abt PROXY settings but I was able to correct this thru your forum). The 4th account belongs to my cranky husband who is on Facebook all the time. He has spelling and grammar issues so he right-clicks the mouse all the time. Plus he need to upload pictures. Help!!! I used System Restore to get back to the earlier version of FF... but lost all internet connection so I installed FF again..

    Thanks!  I found this:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
    I can't find this, however:  User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto.
Do I need to delete both to make this fix work?  Obviously, I have no idea what they do.  >:-)

  • Bluetooth Mighty Mouse Problems - NO RIGHT CLICK.

i tried dozens of times... i can't use the right click. it acts as a primary button even though i set it to secondary...
is there another way of setting it so that it is secondary that i didn't do so that it would cause such a phenomenon?
    I NEED HELP. please.

    Alex,
Do a search of this forum for "mighty mouse right button" or "mighty mouse secondary button." There are a number of problems it may be. The first thing to be sure is that you aren't touching the left button at all while you try to right click. The MM works via sensing whether a finger is on the right or left side of the mouse, and if you are touching the left button even slightly it will register as a primary click rather than a secondary.
Second, there are also issues that have been reported with the BT MM losing the ability to sense that primary / secondary difference after some period of time. Replacing the mouse (sometimes needing to go through a few replacements) does seem to eventually fix that.
If it doesn't seem to be an issue with contact on the sensor, I'd suggest returning the mouse and requesting a new one.

  • HELP! Both mouse buttons are Right-Click!

Hi. So I just installed USB Overdrive on my 10.6.1 iMac 2.66, and one of the buttons was conflicting; I thought it might be an issue with Apple's official mouse & keyboard prefs. So I went in, and I accidentally switched the right click/left click, and now I cannot click on ANYTHING because both buttons are right-click. I tried restarting in the hopes that USB Overdrive would override the system prefs, but no dice. Could someone help? Is there any way I can manipulate system prefs without the use of clicking? Thanks!

Yes, of course. The link was only meant as a reference to get in TM under the DVD (where the mouse should work correctly). The OP should only restore the folder mentioned.
you can not restore just one folder using TM restore utility on the DVD. you can only restore the whole system. this might be the easiest in this case. otherwise one can try logging in as root. this should be possible since AFAIK, USB overdrive mouse settings are user specific. then one can try restoring just what's needed from the main user home directory.

  • Installed Lion, mouse no longer right-clicks

Just upgraded my 5-year old Mac Pro to Lion (10.7).  The OS no longer recognizes a right-click on the mouse (standard mouse with the scroll ball).  I see where to turn it on and off in Preferences...the right button is set to "secondary button."  However it functions just like the primary button.  It worked fine under 10.6.  I do also have a TrackPad installed but disabling it does not seem to affect the mouse function.

Okay, after a couple of reboots this problem seems to be gone.

  • Magic Mouse won't right click on files, but works fine otherwise. 10.6.8

My Magic mouse just suddenly seemd to stop right clicking on files. I can right click on blank sapces in finder or on the desktop and it gives me the usual drop down menu but as soon as I try and right click or ctrl+click on a file there's just nothing. Can't seem to find any similar problems on google. Any ideas?

Hi, yes. The right click would work at start-up until I click on 'always allow' for permissions for google drive, then it dissappears
Unfortunately I found no other workaround other than to switch to the other views (although I strongly dislike working in the other views). But I just use Drive in my internet browser when I do use it, so it's okay for me to uninstall it. Maybe it's something to contact google about so they can fix it on there side.

  • Wireless Mouse Eventually Looses "Right-Click" Capability

    Hello!
The Right-Click funtion on my Bluetooth Wireless Mighty Mouse works for a short time, but eventually ceases to function.
I have to re-set up the mouse in Bluetooth over and over and over.
Has anyone else encountered this problem or should I return my mouse?
    Thank you!

Yes, unfortunately this seems to be a common problem. From the threads my theory is that it's a hardware problem on some (maybe high) fraction of the mice. You can try returning it; some folks (myself included) have had luck with one return but others have gone through a few of these BT MM's in succession with this problem.
    For reference, see these threads:
    * Losing right click on bluetooth mighty mouse
    * Occasional problems with right-clicking on wireless Mighty Mouse
    * Wireless Mighty Mouse Right Button does not work well
    * Random loss of Secondary Button with Wireless Mighty Mouse
    Anyway, you get the idea.

  • Any methods or interfaces for Mouse Left and Right click actions?

Could anyone tell me the methods that I can use for setting up Mouse Left click and Mouse Right click actions? I checked the on-line API and could not find those specifications. Maybe I misses something and did not find them. If you just happen to know it, could you reply this message or you can tell me where I can search to find it. Thanks for your help. Bob

I believe you just set up to receive all mouse click events regardless of which mouse button the user clicked. When you get the MouseEvent object, call its getModifiers method to get an indication of which mouse button was pressed. Check the javadocs for MouseEvent, paying particular attention to "the button mask in the modifer field"

  • Using mouse event for right click or scroll

I would like someone to guide me that if there is any events which can be used for right click of the mouse or the scroll of the mouse(specially the scroll). Until now all the mouse event i have been using is based on the left mouse click, release......  So could anyone guide me how to use the right click and scroll of the mouse using actionscript.
    Thank you!

You should try searching the forums using the key terms related to what you are after.  I don't think you'll find much help for the right click though... appears to not be supported by Flash.  Below is a link to one result for the mouse scroll from just the other day... you can probably find more if it does not help.
