Mov. file is not self contained

I put together several clips and using FCP 7 I used "Export" to "Quick Time movie", thinking that it would contain all the clips plus the editing (transitions, titles, audio)
I then proceeded to delete all the intermediate files created during the editing.
When I attemopted to play the .mov file (or also trying to load into FCP) it began trying to collect some intermediate files, such as files created during the rendering. It could not play the movie because the intrmediate files were missing, of course.
I don't understand why the mov file is not a complete, self contained of the video I created.

When you export a QuickTime Movie from FCP (File->Export->QuickTime Movie) you must check the box indicating to make the file "self-contained."  If that box isn't checked, it makes a reference movie.  Reference movies only contain pointers to where the actual media (clips and render files) reside on your system.

  • Exporting a quicktime movie that is not self-contained

'm exporting an unself-contained quicktime movie in FCP 5.1.4 from a G5 to a one terabyte hard drive. There are 500 gigs of free space on the HD. Everytime I export a movie, it stops halfway through and says "Error, out of disk space." These segments are getting smaller and smaller; I started with an hour segment and now am at a 20 min segment, and it's still saying "Error, out of disk space," no matter what the size. Why is this happening? Please help. Thanks!

It might be useful if you explained:
What is the material you are exporting? HDV, DV, ProRes422 or?
What is the format of the external drive? if it is anything other than Mac OS Extended, time to reformat.
Where is your scratch drive located? Internal or External. If it's internal, it isn't your system disk, is it? If it's external, it isn't USB, is it?

  • Exporting Quicktime Movie not self contained

I exported a QT file withought adding the .mov extension to it. I am exporting a movie that is not self contained so that I can create a QT movie (jpegA) in QT. The Process I used: file>export>QTmovie. It does not create an extension automaticaly so I didn't add it. The file has the FCPlogo with the QT logo inside, but neither FCP or QT will recognize it. I tried just adding the .mov, didn't work do I have to recreate the file and add the .mov manually during creation? It is huge and took 5-6 hrs to create, Is there a way to use the file that was created?
This seems counter intuitive. Never used a program that created a file that I needed to add the extension for without it prompting me to set it, especially when I am asking specifically for a QT movie. Please telll me there is a way to use this 4.5 gig file, I don't have the time to recreate it. Thanks Marc

The movie is completely rendered as far as I can tell(no red lines above sequence, how can I check or make sure it's rendered by rendering in a specific way other than render needs render). It is 94 min, shot in HDV, up to 4-6 tacks of video in some cases with 9 tracks of audio so that may account for size and length of time?
Same machine is being used and I didnt't move the render files. No red lines on project.
You can easily recreate the problem by going through my steps. It is stupid that the .mov doesnt show up. My question is, can I add it afterwards in some way? Make it a smart file or whatever. It is the same type of file just without the extension it didn't ask me to designate or auto designate like would make sense. Sorry for the frustration, I really appreciate your help

  • NOT Self-Contained workflow from FCPCompressorDVDSP

Can I export a project NOT Self-Contained (audio only + video only ) then import it to Compressor and export again for DVDSP ? I want to save time and space.
Is it faster using a project that is NOT Self-Contained in COMPRESSOR ? I like to use DVD BEST QUALITY. A self-contained project a hour long takes 3h30 to compress ...

Given the current bugs in Compressor and FCP Suite as a whole, it would be 'fastest' for you to export as a self-contained movie and then to bring that into compressor.
Here are a couple reasons why:
    - Direct export from FCP to Compressor is EXTREMELY slow as compared to Compressor v.1 and FCP 4.5
    - Compressor's finished MPEG-2 file sizes when using VBR are highly unpredictable (sometimes way too small, or way too large when even using Apple's Presets) and would most likely require a re-encode to get your output file size correct. This is why I recommend working with a self-contained file, since Direct Export to Compressor is so very slow, even for simple timeline projects.
Unfortunately with these bugs, you'll have to decide between saving space or time... unfortunately not both.
If you are compressing a one-hour project, I'd recommend you do it CBR since it will be a lot faster in Compressor than VBR, which again has been exhibiting a MUCH slower encode time than in previous versions. CBR will give you more predictable output file sizes.
I'm very disappointed that Apple has not addressed these issues when so many people have been so vocal about it.

  • .mov files did not transfer with iphoto pics

I recently used my macbook on a long trip and used it to capture the many pictures and videos I took with my digital camera. Once back, I copied (or so I thought) the contents from the macbook to my imac. However, though all the pictures (jpgs) transferred, the movie files did not. However, the thumbnails do show up on the imac but don't actually contain the movie (shows 00:00 as duration).
I've verified that the movies still exist within the data folder (pictures/iphoto library/data) but unable to move these over back into iphoto on my imac so as to sync back up with the thumbnails. Please help.
    thanks,
    ~Dennis

    TD...
Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, the only files that show up when I do file export..ORiginal are the existing pics in iPhoto....not the ones I had transferred before. The movie files do not show up....however, they are still somewhere in the computer as I can run spotlight and find them (it points to the Pictures/iPhoto Library/Data area.
Again, when I originally copied over the files from laptop to desktop, the thumbnails can be seen ion the desktop within iphoto however, the actual movie content is not there.

  • .mov file does not display on the web-site

iWeb is easy to use but my simply link to a .mov file does not work. I am working on the Domain file on my Desktop so I can move it between computers, and it renames the media file in the inspector from name.mov to name-1.mov. In the end the site does not display the animation.

Are you linking to this file so that it can be downloaded from your website?

  • "Could not complete the Video Frames to Layers command because the movie file could not be opened."

    I'm using Photoshop CS5 extended.
I've been using that to make gifs. It was fine when I import video frams into layers with the video formats of .mov or .avi. But After I installed OSX 10.6.8, this message comes up everytime I want to import videos: "Could not complete the Video Frames to Layers command because the movie file could not be opened."
So I installed my old OS back which is 10.6.3 but the problem is still there.
May I know what to do to solve this problem because all along I've been fine with making gifs and importing videos until now.
    Please help, thank you.

The computer deities may be trying to say something to you.  GIF is not a video format.
Are you opening video with the same codec that was successfully opened before?

  • Quick time movies (.mov) files will not play in Iphoto 11.

Quick time movies (.mov) files will not play in Iphoto 11. The thumbnail of the movie shows but when selected only a exclamation mark appears.  I rebuilt the library, thumbnails, permissions etc. I also found the movie files in the iphoto database intact and working. Please advise.

    You're welcome.
Well believe it or not, that's exactly what the exclamation point means. Search the forum. I've been doing this a while.
Next, I have no interest, commercial or otherwise in Library Manager, I have no shares in the company that makes it. I didn't make it. It's not my software.  You could give those guys a million dollars and I'll get nothing from it. I and other expereinced users have recommended it thousands of times on this forum for this problem. Amazing how often it works. Of course, a quick search would have told you that already.
Another: Believe it or not you can use the Rebuild Function of Library Manager for free. You don't need to purchase it for that purpose.
Y'all have a nice paranoid day now.

  • .mov file will not open in FCP X?! codec unavailable? help!

I am trying to edit a short .mov file in FCP X. It was sent to me via YouSendIt. Once it has completed downloading, a message reads:
" The document “S-T3RRA Video Heads by FLOOD(1)-2.mov” could not be opened. A required codec isn't available. To see if additional software is available that will enable QuickTime Player to open the movie, click Tell Me More. "
When I click tell me more, Apple provides me with some additional media support for QuickTime, however I should not need this for a .mov file correct? The file will not open in FCP X or QT. Any ideas? Suggestions?  Was this file incorrectly exported by the creator?
    Help!!
    Thank you!

Yes, it will be encoded using a codec that's not on your system.
That is a common misunderstanding with .mov - it's not a format, it's a container.
It basically contains video & audio streams that may be mp4, mjpeg or just about anything.
In this case, the "anything" is what we need to find out, so we can work out what  you need to read it.
You could try opening it using VideoSpec - it will tell you everything.

  • Saved .mov file will not open on a Windows 7 version of Quicktime or WMplayer or Nero  why not?

I made two .mov files one will open on a PC the other will not Quicktime will opew the first file, but not the second, Windows Media Player will not open either file, neither will Nero or Creative Media Player.  How can I save a video file from iMovie to something that will opew on a PC?

Is this related to iOS (iPads and iPhones)?
This is the iMovie iOS forum, so if you're in the wrong place I can get this question moved.
In iMovie iOS there is only one way to export video, and that is Quicktime H264.
You will need the latest version of Quicktime for Windows.

  • .mov files will not open in quick time when double clicked in iPhoto

  • Quicktime video (.mov file) will not load and play in Firefox 3.6.16

I have a computer with Firefox 3.6.16 installed that will not play Quicktime videos (.mov files) in the browser. This is a desktop computer.
Another computer (laptop) with exactly the same version of Firefox installed will load and play them perfectly in the Quicktime player.
Both computers have Quicktime addin 7.6.9.0 installed and designated as the default application for Quicktime movies.
Both computers play the videos correctly in IE 8.
When attempting to play the video in Firefox, the player window opens and attempts to load the video, but soon seems to freeze leaving a black window open where the player should be.
From what I have observed, this seems to be a problem related specifically to this computer, and since the video plays in IE I have ruled out the firewall blocking loading from the site.

Hi, I've exactly the same problem, 'cept I've XP Pro. When I say exactly, I mean the format used is HDV 1080i60, along with everything else there.
And I'm right there with you. Why Quicktime can't play a natively encoded HDV Quicktime file (using Final Cut Pro), is beyond me, but basically, I've used K-Lite Codec Pack, and Quicktime. Neither work, although Quicktime does ask for internet connectivity to download resources or something similar (I don't have Internet Access at home). I've used VLC on a friend's PC, and, while it works, there is a very strange, and irritating flicker where there's heavy movement
Where can I get the resource needed, as another party needs to view the clip, and they already have it. So if they can update their codec library or similar, then that would be much better (as I wouldn't need to upload a FullHD Video again)
    thanks

  • QT Reference File or QT Self Contained, Lossless?

I have a project on a timeline that I want to export as lossless. It was shot and editied at 1440 x 1080i HDV.
Should I export it as a Quicktime File (Self Contained) or a QT Reference File?
Which will give me a Lossless file?
What settings should I use when I go to File ------ Export ------ Quicktime?
    Current Settings?
    Thanks in advance.
    FCP 7
    Mac Pro
    Intel Xeon
    10 GB RAM

Both self-contained or reference will give you the same quality.
I use self-contained most of the time as Compressor seems happier with them and I have lots of space on hard drives.
