Mov file or mp4 file

I am creating a DVD and made some home movies (VHS) into .mov files. I was thinking that if I converted them into mp4 files, they would be a lot smaller. I converted one of them already and it seemed to degrade the quality a little.......I guess due to the compression ? The .mov files aren't super huge, but I was wondering if all four of them might not fit on the DVD. How much can I put on there?
I wanted to put each one on the DVD where you could click on the one you wanted to watch.
Just trying to get a little input and advice from people who have done this.
I used iDVD about a year ago for a small little project, but haven't done one this size before.
Thank you for any help.

Scott:
iDVD is concerned with total playing time, including menus, of the source material. You can get 120 minutes of playing time on a single layered DVD by using the Professional Quality or High Quality settings.
You can create 4 slideshows in iDVD by using the "+" button at the bottom and select Slideshow from the drop down menu. Then open each slideshow in turn and drag one of your movie files into it. This will let iDVD scale the movie to the TV Safe area like it does with slideshows from still photos. Be sure to set iDVD's slideshow preferences to always scale slides to TV safe area.
When you're ready to burn the project do a File->Save as Disk Image first. That will let you mount the disk image and play it with DVD Player to check the encoding (and typos-my biggest problem) before you commit it to disk. Once you're satisfied with the disk image you can burn it to disk with Disk Utility.
As long as the total playing time of the 4 movies is less than 120 minutes you're good to go.

I created project in iMovie then exported it to MP4 and also MOV file at highest definition possible + I added it to iDVD and had a number issues about encoding errors regarding the mp4 file. MOV worked but the quality was terrible.....
    MOV file is as follows:

    Colour Profile: HD (1-1-1)
    Dimensions: 1920 x 1080

I have updated iDVD and iMovie.

PLEASE HELP i am getting desperate and about to launch this macbook into the air

First of all, Hunt--thanks for responding!
"First, where are you playing the MPEG-2, that you see that jitter?"
On both a MacBook Pro, an Acer laptop and my Mac Tower. I would love to think that it is a problem with the playback system, and that if I merely send the file off to the duplicator they won't have the same problem. Maybe that is the case...I don't know if I have a choice rather than sending it off to see. But it happens in the same spots, in the same way, on all three of the players so I'm a little reluctant to have faith.
"Another thing that can cause jitter in an MPEG-2 is the Bit-Rate - higher the Bit-Rate, the better the quality, but the larger the file. For a DVD, one is limited by the total Bit-Rate (both Audio & Video), but with longer prodcutions, some users choose too low a Bit-Rate. If this is the issue, one would need to go back to the original Project and do a new Export/Share."
Of course, but in the case there is no more 'original project.' It is gone like the wind, stolen along with his computer and backups.
I think I am stuck using one of two files as my master: a DVD he burned where I only see the stutter/vibration/jitter once, or the mpeg2 file where I see it three times. Hopefully, the duplication house can rip if off of one of them and not see the jitter. I know that in audio, my personal filed, you can do a lot to enhance already existing sound--EQ, compression, tape saturation emulation software, etc. I guess I'm hoping there is some kind of analog to the video world that address jitter after a source has been printed--if indeed the source has been printed to be jittery.
    Thanks,
    Doug

  • Converting CDR file to MP4 file

    Hi All
How do I convert CDR file to MPEG-4 movie file?
    regards

    Den
    Thanks for your reply.
It seems I will have to convert from Video_TS file to MP4 file (as the option from CDR file to MP4 is not available on Handbrake). This is okay.
When converting to MP4 file on handbrake what are the choices I need to make?
Format: here I have chosen MP4
Codecs: Here I have chosen MPEG-4 Video / AAC Audio
    Framerate: Same as source
    Encoder: FFmpeg
    Under Quality
Target Size (MB): Nothing is filled here
    Average Bitrate kbps: 1500
    Constant Quality: 50%
GrayScale Encoding: This is not ticked
    2-pass encoding: This is ticked
    Are these choices okay?
    Thanks for your help

  • Converted .avi file to .mp4 file but iTunes still does not accept video

I've just got my new Ipod Classic 160gb and I've tried putting my .avi files into my iTunes (V. 7.5) library, but I couldn't. Then I found out iTunes does not support .avi and went and converted a sample file into .mp4 file to try it out. It did not work as well. I have not found anyone with the same problem as of yet. Hope someone can help, because if I can't put any videos in, the 160gb huge space will be wasted and so will the money D:

Here is the Video Specifications for the iPod Classic:
    Video
H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; H.264 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 3.0 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats.
Find a video converter that will output the files to meet the specifications above, and all should work well. Unfortunately, I don't use .avi files, and have no need to convert any, so I don't have any resources for you however, this search might yield some results:

  • Viewing mov, avi, and mp4 files in photoshop 12

How can I view mov, mp4, and avi files in Photoshop 12?

thanks for your reply Tom. the video is from cameras, video cameras, vhs tapes, and mini dvds. everything looks much worse after import into fcpx;  i haven't imported hd files. The specs. are, everything gets blurry and color pales.  i just tried importing four more files (and optimized), all mov, (no avi or mp4), and there is no change in quality. I'm comparing the video in fcpx to the same video before it was imported. i've compared it side by side to the files being played in quicktime, real player, idvd, and el gato eye tv (third party video capture software). everything is crisp and color is vibrant before going into fcpx.

  • Adobe Media Encoder CS4 freezes when trying to convert .m4v files to .mp4 files

I'm trying to convert some things I got on itunes in order to put them on my android phone. Media encoder freezes before I even start encoding though, any ideas? My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, if you need any more info I'd be happy to provide it.

I meant the File->Save option should not be gray if you "make a change" anywhere in the document. I only have access to an OSX Server remotely to illustrate this point so SimpleText should help you understand what I mean by a grayed out menu item:
    The big red arrow.
You can get to the Save As dialog so clearly grayed out menu items wasn't the issue. Moving on..
Your screenshot buttons may be unresponsive but they also aren't "grayed out". Here's a Save dialog with a truely grayed out button:
Your button is not grayed out.
Accurately describing your issue here will help quite a bit. The "save crash" issue has been so rampant it's the first suggestion I had so I offered it. Often repairing the FLA fixed the saving mechanism.
In your case I honestly haven't come across your issue so I have no more suggestions outside reinstall Flash completely.  Good luck.

  • I am trying to transfer my movies (mp4 files) to my IPad, but they are not showing up on the IPad. I have 13 movies showing on my IPad that they are in ICloud. I've sync'd the movies I want to the IPad, but only one is showing under the "movies" folder. ?

I have been trying to transfer some different movies from my PC to my IPad, but they are not showing in the "movie" folder. I have sync'd the movies (these are mp4 files) that I wanted transfered, but only one is showing in the folder. There are 13 other movies in the folder that have the ICloud symbol in the corner of their picture. I understand that I can pull those movies from ICloud any time I want to watch them, but I want to watch the ones that I've just sync'd with my IPad. How do I find them? After I checked the movies I wanted, I "applied" them and watched it sync and copy the wanted movies to my IPad. Now what?  Thanks.

There are some good programs that you could use to convert the format, Handbrake or Mpegstreamclip are two good free ones. Convert them to MP4 and then try importing them again.

  • Problem with transferring mp4 file to iPod Video

I used MediaFork to rip a DVD (that I own) to mp4. It looks great on my iMac and MacBook when running in QuickTime. I can import the file into iTunes.
I can play the file from within iTunes. However when I sync content to my iPod it does not show up!
When in QuickTime the following information is displayed in Movie Info.
    Format: h.264 Decoder 640 x 480, Millions AAC, Stereo (L R), 44.100 khz
    Data rate 1610.00 kbits/second
Every once in a while the Playing FPS changes to > 24 (like 24.10)
Is the data rate the problem??? Or what else could be the problem?
    Help!
This is from the Video IPOD video specifications.
    H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Low-Complexity Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
    H.264 video, up to 768 Kbps, 320 by 240 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

The data rate you mention (1610) is over the published spec (1500), so I would guess that is indeed a problem.
Also, in MediaFork, did you set the encoder to the option marked for iPod?
If not, that could be a problem. Output from the encoder labeled MAIN won't work on an iPod.
    Settings I use succesfully –
    File format: MP4 file
Codecs: AVC/H.264 Video / AAC Audio
    Framerate: Same as source
    Encoder: x264 (h.264 iPod)
    2-pass encoding: yes
    Quality: Average Bitrate 1250
    Picture settings: 640 x XXX

  • The Slideshow mp4 file created in Lightroom does not play on an iPad

If I take a collection of images and create a sideshow in Lightroom 4 and export it as a mp4 file  using the 720p preset and put it at a website, the file works fine with various Windows computers and android devices but does not play in an iPad.  If I take that same mp4 file and run it through Adobe Premier Elements 12 to produce a new  720p mp4 file, that mp4 file plays fine in the iPad.
Anyone know the reason for this and how to create a 720p file that will play in the iPad in LIghtroom?

Don't know if this will help, but you might want to check your mp4 files against this :-
iPad Supported Video Formats & Movie Formats

  • File error when importing .mp4 files

    Hi there,
I have a problem concerning importing files.
I had some .mkv files, which I converted to .mp4 files with just 1 audio track and no subtitles using Handbrake.
Problem is, I can't import these files into Final Cut Pro 7.
    It gives the following error:
"File error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown."
I have no problem importing .avi files, or .mp4 files that haven't been converted.
Does anyone know what I should do? I don't know any other program to convert .mkv files, so basically, I'm bound to using Handbrake.
    Thanks in advance!!

I didn't know Handbrake was such a bad tool.
I never did much video-editing before, so I usually used iMovie, and the Handbrake-converted files worked fine with that.
And I did what you said, I converted the video to .mov with MPEG Streamclip, using the mentioned presets, but now I have another problem.
A 22 minute file, which was 360MB before converting, turned into a 6.2GB file after converting.
Since I use videoclips from a TV Serie, which has over 60 episodes, this is going to cost a lot of space. Is there any way to reduce the filesize without destroying the video quality, or is there any, ANY, way to make FCP accept .mp4 files?
I don't care if it slows down my Mac or anything, it's just that I know it's possible, with the 700MB file from one of my posts above.

  • Error -2041:  Invalid Sample Description on every MP4 file that I create.

OK, Apple already has a poor reputation in my book and this just adds to it, because I'm not the only one struggling with this problem. Numerous students in my classes have complained about the same thing. We are training on Adobe After Effects 7.0 and our instructor has requested that we post our files as MP4 files, so we have tried MP4 Standard, MP4 Improved, and the H.264 settings. Regardless of which setting we use we get the error:
Error -2041: an invalid sample description was found in the movie
Now why should the software that automatically makes itself the default player for MP4 files not be able to actually open them? We've all downloaded the most recent player.
Clearly, since I'm not the only one with the issue, there is a problem with the software that needs to be addressed. For now, I am changing the default player to something that can actually open and play the files without crying about it.

I had the same problem few days ago.
It appears that MP4 format is a lot restricted, and Quicktime/iTunes does not communicate a lot about that. Tipically, Quicktime does not think that MPeg 4 + MP3 is an acceptable MP4 compination.
To make them a lot more permissive, just try to rename the file extension to .m4v, it'll do the job in many cases, and worked for me on a lot of files.
    Best regards

  • ITunes will not import mp4-files.

For some reason iTune will not import mp4-files into iTunes. The files only contain audio, no video. I know that mp4 is a format that combines the two.
The files were generated in an earlier version of iTunes, like in 2006 or something. They were imported from CD's. I can locate them just fine on my computer and they play without problem in Windows Media Player.
The problem is that when I try to import them the way that iTunes want me to import files its like they don't exist. ITunes locates the folders and sub-folders, but its like there's no content in the folders...
I've tried changing my import settings but nothing seems to help...
Have any of you encountered a similar problem, could you fix it and how?
I've contacted Apple-support but they were unable (incompetent) to assist me...
To me it seems like the only option left is to convert all the files, like 2 GB, from mp4 to mp3.
Thankful for any help I could get solving this ***** of an issue...
    //Magnus

iTunes can handle just about any file format that works with QuickTime and will play any file purchased or downloaded from the iTunes Store. If you've got video files that end with a .mov, .m4v, or .mp4 file extension, you can import them to iTunes with ease. However, the video especially the MP4 video must meet the following specifications: it must be encoded as 540 kbit/s (minimum) MPEG-4 video (H.264) with an approximately 128 kbit/s AAC audio track or encoded as 1.5 Mbit/s (minimum) MPEG-4 video (H.264) with a minimum 128 kbit/s AAC audio track. If not, you will fail to import MP4 to iTunes.
Even if your MP4 files meet the above specifications and are added to iTunes successfully, it may still fail to sync to iOS devices. For iPhones, iPads, and video-capable iPods play videos in more specific video formats and codecs.
Here is a detailed guide to get iTunes unfriendly MP4 to iTunes

  • Problem with reading mp4 files with QT 7.4.1 or mpeg Streamclip

    Hi,
I used to convert some .flv files into .mp4 files with iSquint and then into .dv files with mpeg Streamclip in order to re-work and compile these files on a DVD using iMovie and iDVD.
However I cannot do it anymore since I upgraded to QT 7.4.1. iSquint uses the mpeg-4 video codec to convert the file. Therefore I cannot open them with QT 7.4.1 anymore and I cannot convert them into .dv files with mpeg Streamclip anymore since Streamclip is uses a QT plug-in.
I have tried to solve the problem using Perian but this plug-in does not work with my version of Mac (Panther 10.3.9). I also tried to downgrade to an older QT using Pacifist but it nearly crashed my whole computer (fortunately I could fix that by reinstalling QT 7.4.1).
Has someone a solution to my problem?
    Thank you in advance.
    Steve

Not all the following will apply to Panther (10.3.x) so look carefully on the sites mentioned for the correct versions:
These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear pretty much everything that the net can throw at you: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
It is known to work in the great majority of cases with Safari 3.0.4, QT 7.3 or 7.4 and OS 10.4.11. (If you are running Leopard, ensure that all plug-ins have been updated for OS 10.5)
Assuming you already run Tiger versions OS 10.4.9 or above (this has not yet been verified with Leopard) and have Quicktime 7.2 or above, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
    RealPlayer 10 for Mac from http://forms.real.com/real/player/blackjack.html?platform2=Mac%20OS%20X&product= RealPlayer%2010&proc=g3&lang=&show_list=0&src=macjack
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.
Adobe FlashPlayer should first be uninstalled using the appropriate uninstaller available here: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=2 and then the latest version obtained from here: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash and installed.
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.)
In earlier versions than QT 7.1.3 in Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
You should also ensure, if you are running Tiger 10.4.11 or Leopard, that you have downloaded and installed the correct version for your Mac of Security Update 2007-009.1.1, which also deals with the Quicktime/Flash issues you may have experienced, such as the '?'. What happened was that both Quicktime as well as Adobe FlashPlayer tried to play the Flash video at the same time. This no longer happens. (N.B. Security Update 2007-009 1.1 requires both a restart and a permission repair.)
If you get problems with viewing video on a website try moving this file to your Desktop:
    Hard drive/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/QuickTime Plugin.webplugin
and then restarting Safari. If all now works, you can trash that file.
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them). However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/
Now go to Safari Preferences/Security, and tick the boxes under Web Content (all 4 of them) to enable Java.
Lastly open Audio Midi Setup (which you will find in the Utilities Folder of your Applications Folder) and click on Audio Devices. Make sure that both Audio Input and Audio Output, under Format, are set to 44100 Hz, and that you have selected 'Built in Audio'.
Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
You should also consider having the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.
