.mov Files from Canon EOS 5D Mark II and Ipod Nano

I am looking at purchasing both these items with their promise to
deliver video files in the .mov format.
I am wondering whether anyone can confirm that is a 1-step transfer
into FCP, or is there fine print I need to read ? I understand going in
that the video quality of the Nano will be what it is, but wonder also
if anyone has experience with the video coming out of the Canon EOS 5D
Mark II ?
Thanks for any help,
Sterne

Let's get into a little more detail.
The moniker ".mov" doesn't really mean much. It means "a movie that QT can play back" - a very generic statement. Saying that a movie is a QuickTime movie is saying nothing of the underlying codec. You might have a hundred movie files with the ending ".mov" and they could all be using different codecs like: Motion Jpeg, DV, XDCam, DVCPro, DVCPro HD, H.264 and so on.... So to answer the question, "...Does the fact that it is already an .mov file make it more of a drag and drop thing?" The answer is, No. Here's why:
The 5D (and 7D) shoot a ".mov" file, yes. But specifically it's of the H.264 flavor. This is a burdensome codec. It's processor intensive. It's not meant for editing, it's meant for delivery. Furthermore, if there are going to be advances with it's native editability it's going to happen at the happen on hardware and software that are of the most current standards. And besides, that's still a big if.
There are no current machines that have true drag-drop-edit (without pain) the raw Canon .mov files. If you're thinking your current computer can't handle "hi-def footage" then it most certainly won't handle the (HD) camera native files. That doesn't mean you can't edit the footage. You'll just be back to what's been mentioned before: transcoding. You can always transcode to the highest quality codec that your Mac can handle and edit in that format. DVCPro HD? DV, at least! Don't know - whatever your machine can handle.
Summary: Native 5D camera files ---> FCP = painful, even with newest hardware/software. Rule is transcode. This is the only way people are efficiently working with this footage right now.
Footage Quality - it's quite nice! There's tons of video all over Vimeo with it now. It's a great concept that will only get better. Snoop around here too. There are tons of sample footage on the web. It is highly compressed though. All that info, and with tiny files, the information is going someplace! Being discarded. Learning to maximize an environment's given conditions will lead to minimizing the camera's inherent artifacts.
The next question to ask yourself is do you want this camera mostly for the HD movie mode or photography? The new 7D has some compromises compared to the 5D but has some things that the 5D doesn't, yet. Like framerates. The 5D is, for now, strictly 30P, while the 7D sports 24P, 25P 30P and 50P & 60P at 720P (instead of the full 1920x1200).
Hopefully that answers some questions regarding FCP dealing with the native camera files. Other than that: 5D or 7D? Both have some worthwhile merits to consider.

  • 1080p30 .mov files from canon eos 5DMarkII in Final cut express 4.0.1

    Hi everybody.
i need some help to import HD vidéo .mov files from Canon Eos 5DMarkII in final cut express.

Anybody have a idea to import Progressive files in final cut ?
maybe they have an update with new avchd 1080p codec in configuration ?
or i need final cut pro...?
    Thanks in advance
and sorry for my english...i'm french

There is no good solution for working with this camera in FCE. It's 30fps progressive. There is no true video format that is 30fps. This is something Canon was cobbled together for this stills camera.
You can use MPEG Streamclip to convert the material to QuickTime using the Apple Intermediate Codec at 1920x1080. I think that's what it shoot. You should check the camera manual to confirm it shoots 1920 and not 1440.
The problem is the frame rate. You can convert it to 29.97fps or to 25fps. 25fps conforms to the European frame rate, but I don't know how well Streamclip will do this conversion. You also need to make sure the material is not interlaced by Streamclip.
The other problem is that FCE handles 1080 as an interlaced format, because for production it's supposed to be an interlaced format, at least in the formats, HDV and AVCHD, that FCE works with. You can set your sequence properties to have no field dominance, which should prevent it interlacing during compositing of any effects.

    Try the standard fixes:
    - Reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at

  • .mov file from Canon 5D Mark II file blurry in Timeline

Haven't use FC in quite a while, so I'm a bit rusty.
When I import a clip into FC, it looks fine in the Viewer, but when I move it into the timeline it looks blurry in the Canvas. It remains blurry even after rendering and even after exporting with no compression. The file is a .mov file from a Canon 5D Mark II. I tried exporting it from QT as a QT file with no compression, as well as just importing the uncompressed .mov file, but nothing works. I'm sure it's something simple.
    Thanks for any help!

  • Photoshop Elements cannot open Camera RAW from Canon EOS 7D Mark ii

I just bought Canon EOS 7D mark ii camera.  I have Photoshop Elements 12.  The program is unable to open RAW images. The message is "the file appears to be from a camera model which is not supported by installed version of camera Raw".
I downloaded 8.7.1 plugin but that is also not able to open the image.

You need Adobe camera raw version 8.7 Unfortunately your software pre-dates the camera. ACR 8.7 is only compatible with PSE13. But it is possible to download and install the free DNG converter to convert your raw files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the DNG files will open in PSE12 (keep your CR2's as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)
Windows download (.exe file) click here DNG Converter 8.7.1
Mac download (.dmg file) click here DNG Converter 8.7.1
You can convert a whole folder of raw images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:

  • Photoshop CS5.1 won't read raw files from Canon EOS M

Photoshop cs5.1 won't read raw files from canon eosM, what to do?

The EOS M requires at least Camera Raw 7.2 but Raw 7.2 is only compatible with CS6 or higher (CS5 is only compatible up to Raw 6.7)
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
To open and edit Raw files, either upgrade to CS6 or join the Cloud and get the CC version.
Alternatively convert the Raw files from the EOS M to DNGs using the free DNG converter then edit the DNGs in CS5.1

  • Soft Focus Images From Canon EOS 1D Mark IIn

I am viewing soft focus issues with my RAW CR2 files coming from the above camera body. I accidentally opened a file in Canon's Digital Photo Professional and it was razor sharp compared to Aperture. A few historical facts. I have had the camera body calibrated to my multiple L lenses several times. I am using the latest firmware for the camera at 1.1.2 and the latest version of the OS at 10.4.10, Aperture 1.5.4, and DPP at 3.0.2. I have used another identical body model with one of my lenses with the same results. I have viewed this issue on several Macs and displays. I have done controlled sample shots using a Digital Imaging Box where the camera is mounted firmly to it with a two second timer to avoid camera shake and controlled lighting with the same results. This all leads me to how Aperture is handling the CR2 file. Now I am talking about viewing only at 100% magnification. There is NO adjustments done at this point which should rule out the RAW processor engine. Like you all I have moved my entire VERY LARGE library and complete workflow to Aperture and now have serious doubts if I can use this awesome application. Has anyone else experienced this? I have tried Apple directly, other forums, other photographers, etc. with no real answer. Since this is my first post, I can not figure out how to attach screen captures so you can clearly see the difference. I can send them via PM if required. All of your help is greatly appreciated!
    Cheers,
    David

What do you mean sharp "out of the camera?"
This is a RAW file? Note JPEG files will almost always be sharper out of the camera than will RAW files. JPEG files have post-processing (color space applied, sharpening applied) out of camera when RAW files do NOT.
It is very likely you have different settings enabled in DPP and Aperture. With Aperture you can do sharpening in the RAW conversion step, or via edge sharpening... and doing a comparison on "sharpness" before you have applied this really makes no sense.
NO RAW files are sharp out of camera (well, unless they're from a MF digital back) because all DSLRs have an anti-aliasing filter in them which purposely blurs images. This is done to eliminate artifacting and to increase the effective resolution of the camera (because note that a 12 MP digital camera actually only has 6 million green, 3 million blue, and 3 million red sensors). It does not have 12 million RGB capable sensors, which requires some math, etc., in camera.

  • Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III and Aperture 2?

I was wondering if anyone using a Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III can confirm if they're able to shoot tethered using Aperture 2? Though it's listed under the RAW support page, this model of camera is not supported in the knowledge base article called: Tips on tethered shooting.
I tried the demo and though it registered my camera, it wouldn't allow me to capture. Not sure if it's a limitation of the demo, or ignorance on my part. If you know for certain one way or another, please share.
    Thanks.

To the best of my knowledge the tethered shooting does not work with any of the newer Canon DSLRs. A workaround that may be good for you is the Aperture hot folder script that I used with Aperture 1.5. If you can't find t just hit the thread back.

  • H.264 mov files from Canon 5D Mark II running at incorrect speed?

What is causing the mov. files recorded at 25 fps Imported from a Canon 5D Mark II
PAL to run at 2.5 fps on the Timeline of Premiere Pro ? And it looks like it.This all happened after the Firmware Upgrade 2.0.4
The camera is recording at the right speed according to the LCD and it runs correctly in Premiere Elements ?.

Interesting approach., Canon seem to think it might be the camera ? Which I
doubt because the mov H264 files are easily opened in Premiere Elements and
work very well., I am reluctant to send it back as I think the Problem is in
    Premiere but, where ?

Ps . The problem is not fixed, Canon Australia is looking at the issue, the Canon EOS 5 D Mark II is recording at 25 fps. They believe the problem is within Adobe Premier Pro ? Perhaps even a computer problem any ideas.

  • Aperture does not support Small Raw files from Canon EOS 5D MK II

    Hi,
I recently bought a new Canon EOS 5D MK II camera and started shooting on SmallRaw format, but Aperture simply refused to process those files. It only shows a preview of around 3 inches only. I don't know what's wrong either with my OS 10.5.6 or Aperture 2.

I am attempting to download pictures from my Canon EOS 7D and it will download only 2 of the 111 I hae on the memory card and claims the ramining 109 are in an incompatible CR2 format.  The two pictures it is downloading are also in the same CR2 file format & I've used this same exact camera half a hundred times to download into iPhoto using exclusively the CR2 RAW format (most recently as of last night & it worked just fine then), so I can't figure out why all the sudden it's refusing to work.  Anybody have any ideas on a fix?
Note: I have iPhoto version 9.5.1 & OSX 10.9.2.  Both fully upgraded.

It ould be a glitch on the card.
