MOV files or not.

Hi, working on my very first wedding highlight video, using a PC with i7 processor, 16GB RAM, Nvidia 660 GPU. I´m using CS6 with mercury engine ON. Playing MOV files is still a bit hard to playback and seem to "jitter" a bit ( recorderd with GH4 1080 50fps 100mbit/s ) As i read on the web it seems people convert it into ProRes 422 before editing, but that seems only to apply when using a MAC. What format should i convert my MOV files to for best quality in CS6 or should i upgrade some hardware on my rig. What you would recomend ??
Regards from SWEDEN.

CS6 will process the mov only in 32 bit meaning it will only use 4 gig of ram.
You could try the Cineform codec (if it will take the GH4 files). Kind of equivalent of Proress.
CineForm Studio: Software Download
BTW you can edit Prores on CS6 windows.

  • .mov file does not display on the web-site

iWeb is easy to use but my simply link to a .mov file does not work. I am working on the Domain file on my Desktop so I can move it between computers, and it renames the media file in the inspector from name.mov to name-1.mov. In the end the site does not display the animation.

Are you linking to this file so that it can be downloaded from your website?

  • "Could not complete the Video Frames to Layers command because the movie file could not be opened."

    I'm using Photoshop CS5 extended.
I've been using that to make gifs. It was fine when I import video frams into layers with the video formats of .mov or .avi. But After I installed OSX 10.6.8, this message comes up everytime I want to import videos: "Could not complete the Video Frames to Layers command because the movie file could not be opened."
So I installed my old OS back which is 10.6.3 but the problem is still there.
May I know what to do to solve this problem because all along I've been fine with making gifs and importing videos until now.
    Please help, thank you.

The computer deities may be trying to say something to you.  GIF is not a video format.
Are you opening video with the same codec that was successfully opened before?

I am a student working on a project that I started in university on an Apple Mac desktop. I decided to carry my project back home to continue with it on a laptop which is Windows...however the Mov. files will not open up on premeire pro and it is really frustrating as I have done a lot of work. • Quick time movies (.mov) files will not play in Iphoto 11.

Quick time movies (.mov) files will not play in Iphoto 11. The thumbnail of the movie shows but when selected only a exclamation mark appears.  I rebuilt the library, thumbnails, permissions etc. I also found the movie files in the iphoto database intact and working. Please advise.

    You're welcome.
Well believe it or not, that's exactly what the exclamation point means. Search the forum. I've been doing this a while.
Next, I have no interest, commercial or otherwise in Library Manager, I have no shares in the company that makes it. I didn't make it. It's not my software.  You could give those guys a million dollars and I'll get nothing from it. I and other expereinced users have recommended it thousands of times on this forum for this problem. Amazing how often it works. Of course, a quick search would have told you that already.
Another: Believe it or not you can use the Rebuild Function of Library Manager for free. You don't need to purchase it for that purpose.
Y'all have a nice paranoid day now.

  • .mov files did not transfer with iphoto pics

I recently used my macbook on a long trip and used it to capture the many pictures and videos I took with my digital camera. Once back, I copied (or so I thought) the contents from the macbook to my imac. However, though all the pictures (jpgs) transferred, the movie files did not. However, the thumbnails do show up on the imac but don't actually contain the movie (shows 00:00 as duration).
I've verified that the movies still exist within the data folder (pictures/iphoto library/data) but unable to move these over back into iphoto on my imac so as to sync back up with the thumbnails. Please help.
    thanks,
    ~Dennis

    TD...
Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, the only files that show up when I do file export..ORiginal are the existing pics in iPhoto....not the ones I had transferred before. The movie files do not show up....however, they are still somewhere in the computer as I can run spotlight and find them (it points to the Pictures/iPhoto Library/Data area.
Again, when I originally copied over the files from laptop to desktop, the thumbnails can be seen ion the desktop within iphoto however, the actual movie content is not there.

  • Mov. file is not self contained

I put together several clips and using FCP 7 I used "Export" to "Quick Time movie", thinking that it would contain all the clips plus the editing (transitions, titles, audio)
I then proceeded to delete all the intermediate files created during the editing.
When I attemopted to play the .mov file (or also trying to load into FCP) it began trying to collect some intermediate files, such as files created during the rendering. It could not play the movie because the intrmediate files were missing, of course.
I don't understand why the mov file is not a complete, self contained of the video I created.

When you export a QuickTime Movie from FCP (File->Export->QuickTime Movie) you must check the box indicating to make the file "self-contained."  If that box isn't checked, it makes a reference movie.  Reference movies only contain pointers to where the actual media (clips and render files) reside on your system.

  • Saved .mov file will not open on a Windows 7 version of Quicktime or WMplayer or Nero  why not?

I made two .mov files one will open on a PC the other will not Quicktime will opew the first file, but not the second, Windows Media Player will not open either file, neither will Nero or Creative Media Player.  How can I save a video file from iMovie to something that will opew on a PC?

Is this related to iOS (iPads and iPhones)?
This is the iMovie iOS forum, so if you're in the wrong place I can get this question moved.
In iMovie iOS there is only one way to export video, and that is Quicktime H264.
You will need the latest version of Quicktime for Windows.

  • .mov file will not open in FCP X?! codec unavailable? help!

I am trying to edit a short .mov file in FCP X. It was sent to me via YouSendIt. Once it has completed downloading, a message reads:
" The document “S-T3RRA Video Heads by FLOOD(1)-2.mov” could not be opened. A required codec isn't available. To see if additional software is available that will enable QuickTime Player to open the movie, click Tell Me More. "
When I click tell me more, Apple provides me with some additional media support for QuickTime, however I should not need this for a .mov file correct? The file will not open in FCP X or QT. Any ideas? Suggestions?  Was this file incorrectly exported by the creator?
    Help!!
    Thank you!

Yes, it will be encoded using a codec that's not on your system.
That is a common misunderstanding with .mov - it's not a format, it's a container.
It basically contains video & audio streams that may be mp4, mjpeg or just about anything.
In this case, the "anything" is what we need to find out, so we can work out what  you need to read it.
You could try opening it using VideoSpec - it will tell you everything.

  • Quicktime video (.mov file) will not load and play in Firefox 3.6.16

I have a computer with Firefox 3.6.16 installed that will not play Quicktime videos (.mov files) in the browser. This is a desktop computer.
Another computer (laptop) with exactly the same version of Firefox installed will load and play them perfectly in the Quicktime player.
Both computers have Quicktime addin 7.6.9.0 installed and designated as the default application for Quicktime movies.
Both computers play the videos correctly in IE 8.
When attempting to play the video in Firefox, the player window opens and attempts to load the video, but soon seems to freeze leaving a black window open where the player should be.
From what I have observed, this seems to be a problem related specifically to this computer, and since the video plays in IE I have ruled out the firewall blocking loading from the site.

Hi, I've exactly the same problem, 'cept I've XP Pro. When I say exactly, I mean the format used is HDV 1080i60, along with everything else there.
And I'm right there with you. Why Quicktime can't play a natively encoded HDV Quicktime file (using Final Cut Pro), is beyond me, but basically, I've used K-Lite Codec Pack, and Quicktime. Neither work, although Quicktime does ask for internet connectivity to download resources or something similar (I don't have Internet Access at home). I've used VLC on a friend's PC, and, while it works, there is a very strange, and irritating flicker where there's heavy movement
Where can I get the resource needed, as another party needs to view the clip, and they already have it. So if they can update their codec library or similar, then that would be much better (as I wouldn't need to upload a FullHD Video again)
    thanks

  • Urgent Help Wanted With My Presentation - Mov Files Will Not Open

I am a retired lifeboatman, and have developed a fund raising talk focusing on my 35 year involvement with saving lives off the UK southern coast.  I use Keynotes and have never had a problem, until now.  I have another talk next week and thought I would update the presentation.  I have updated to Mavericks and also the latest Keynotes 6.0.1.  When I went to play the presentation, it informed me that some of the .mov files needed to be updated to run on QuickTime.  I pressed the convert button, only to be informed that most of the files could not be upgraded.  When I try to play again, all I get is a blank black screen.  I closed Keynotes and reopened the file in version 5.3, but still the same problem occurred . Most of my video files are of actual rescues and have been transferred from old VHS tapes. and are invaluable to me.  It also means my presentation next week will be without the powerful impact these rescue videos present.  I have searched through the support communities and also on the web, and have tried various suggestions and trial programs for converting the files, but none have been able to provide me with any playable video.  Can anyone please help me to overcome this problems?  Any help would be gratefully received.

It's never a good idea to change operating systems and applications without fully testing over a period of time with existing work files first. As Mavericks is such a new operating system, there are a few quirks that are still in place compared to its predecessors.
Many video types do not play in the new Quicktime 10 player that is included with Mavericks, but version 7 should play any type. Down load and install QuickTime player version 7 for Mavericks, this is a much better movie player than the simple version now included with Mavericks from here:    Download Apple QuickTime Player version 7
Open the video file in QT 7 and check the video plays correctly.
Let me know the CODEC used, it is listed against Format in the QT Inspector, (command I or Window > show movie inspector)
In theory Keynote should now play your video again but let me see how you get on.

  • Imported .mov file does not play in Flash export

I have imported a .mov file as a background for a flash banner I want to put on my website. The exported flash file plays all of the text animations, but the .mov background does not work -- it's just frozen on the first frame. I have read similar problems with QT exports, but I haven't found any similar flash problems. Thanks for any help.

I think it might be necessary to look at the Inspector in QuickTime. Open the .mov file in QuickTime and go to Window > Show Movie Inspector:
In the info window that comes up, under the Format: field you want to look at the second row where it tells you the audio track format:
In this example, this particular clip is in a really odd format. It is MPEG Layer 2 (no Layer 3 which is MP3 format) at 32Khz, Mono. Preferably for anything in iMovie or iDVD you would prefer the Inspector to look like this:
Linear PCM, 16bit (etc) 2 channels, 48kHz. This can be accomplished by downloading and installing MPEG Streamclip. Open the program and drag the .mov clip into the applicationw window (with five dots in it). Then under the File Menu choose Export to QuickTime:
Then go to the Compression pull-down menu and choose Apple Intermediat Codec (AIC):
Then under the Audio section, leave the audio pulldown to uncompressed but do set the sample rate to 48kHz instead of Auto:

  • Gray .mov files -- can not choose files to burn

1.) I saved my 80-minute FCE PAL project to a .mov file. I used iDVD to successfully burn it to a disk (tried "One-Step" but since it wasn't from a camera used "Existing Project"). It played on my computer and on a DVD player.
2.) I did the same but used NTSC as the FCE designation. That also worked.
3.) I went on a trip, disconnected my computer from wall socket.
4.) Returned, tried to burn a disk and only see those .mov files in gray ... so can not burn anything with iDVD.
5.) I noticed in preferences that iDVD has an option for NTSC. I had had it set on PAL (it's been a long time since I used it). That change made no difference, .mov files still gray.
6.) I looked through this forum as well as iDVD Help, could not find anything.

The crucial word here is "burn". The menu command File > Burn Project To Disk lets you burn an archive of your project onto a DVD. It's not used to archive to a drive.
Sorry, I have no experience with Dual Layer drives so I don't know if iMovie 6 can use Dual Layer or not. It may not. Searching for "burn" in iMovie Help didn't help.
If your can't burn to a Dual Layer with that command, you might try using the Finder to burn the project onto the DVD. It should be able to handle saving files on a Dual Layer disk. Search for "Dual Layer" in Finder Help.
To create an archive on an external disk, use the iMovie 6 menu command File > Save Project As. That saves a copy of the project on whichever drive you choose.
Yes, that volume must use the Mac OS Extended disk format, the standard Mac file format. If it's a different format iMovie can't reliably save to the volume. (Most FireWire drives ship with a different format.) Use the application Disk Utility to erase the drive.

  • MOV files are not able to be synced into iPhone.

    Hi, there,
Here is how I get this problem.
I took the video on the iPhone 4, imported in Image Capture into a MacBook, so now in MacBook it is like IMG_xxxx.MOV.
Now move this file into a Windows XP, where I sync my personal stuff is. So in iTune, under the Pictures tab, Include Video was checked, and after sync, the error message says:
some video items were not copied into iPhone because these videos are not able to play on this iPhone.
it was sync ok before, after I turned on iTuen and upgrade to 10.5.3.3 today, iTune for Windows.
but the funny thing is, that MOV file was initially generated on this iPhone, how come it says it can not be playback on this iPhone?
    my iPhone is iPhone4, 5.0.1
    any suggestion/idea?
    Thanks a lot!
