.mov files unreadable by client with PC

I have been producing videos for a client for some time and editing with Final Cut Pro X.
The video was shot on a couple of different cameras over the past year or so, on a DVCPro HD, and a Canon DSLR.
All the the footage has been stored as .mov files on assorted hard drives.  I would like my client (who lives in a PC world) to be able to view the .mov files and even with the use of Premier Pro.  pull an occasional short bit of video off my FIles.
I copied all the .mov's to a hard drive formated to accept Mac video files.  (NTSF Paragon software)
But the files cannot be played.  They get an error 2048. He is running Quicktime 7.4 on his PC.
What is the issue and is there aound this so he can view and extract some video.  Or is it even possible.
What do I have to do to the files before he gets them or what does he have to do to his system to read the files off a comonly used hard drive.
Thanks
Rich Rumppe  running on a new I-mac.

As I understand your comment.  To read them as quictime files on the PC side, they should be H264.
What I am actually saying is that the QT MOV file must use codecs that are supported by the QT 7 for Windows codec component configuration. H.264 is usually the best choice for the widest range of uses but may not the best choice for follow-up editing by your PC client. Unfortunately, most of the codecs you would likely use for FCP HD editing (DVCPRO HD, HDV, Apple ProRes 422, XDCAM EX, XDCAM HD, XDCAM HD422, etc.) are not supported by QT 7 (Mac or PC) unless FCP is also installed to add these components. Since there is no Windows version of FCP, there is no way to add these codecs to a Windows platform and, even if similar Windows codecs are available for installation in the global Windows system codec component configuration area, these codecs are not available for use by the QT 7 for Windows app. It is not just the file container that makes a file playback compatible with QT 7 for Windows, but the form of compressed data actually stored/recognized/supported within the container.
So I'm probably going to have to have to tell my client that when they need a few shots of something,  I can grab it for them and convert just those files?   Is that basically where we are?
Unfortunately yes... assuming they are unwilling to invest in hardware and software allowing them to either play the files as they are or make the same conversions they want you to do. The only other option would be to edit your future projects in a compression format this is already compatible with the QT 7 app but this would reduced the overall quality of your project ouput.

In what file type and compression format did you download the YouTube content? I.e., to avoid such issues, you would normally download the source files as content that is natively compatible with your target player or convert incompatible file type/compression format combinations to files that are compatible with your targeted media player.

  • .MOV file unreadable in QuickTime

    Hi!
I am trying to open and read a .mov file on my computer (late 2008 2.4 Ghz Macbook running the latest Snow Leopard) and QuickTime X won't open it, telling me that it's not a format recognised by QuickTime and that I might have to download additional softwares to read it. I have tried to open the file with QuickTime 7, VLC, Final Cut Express 4, and iMovie 09 as well. I have Perian and Flip4Mac installed. Nothing works. QuickTime seems to open other .mov files without any problem.
I have checked the Info of the file and it's an HD video (1920x1080) with MPEG-2 Video, Linear PCM and Timecode as codecs.
I have thought that the MPEG-2 Playback codec could solve the problem but it seems to be for Quicktime 7 and l'm pretty sure the file could be read with QuickTime X on the original Mac Pro, though on this point I might be mistaken.
The file was transferred from a Mac Pro to my Macbook through a Western Digital My Passport (FireWire 800 and USB 2.0) external hard drive. Could the hard drive possibly have corrupted the file in one way or another? What I found odd was that the file was "locked" (with a padlock on the icon) on the hard drive and when transferred on my computer. I can unlock it in Info but I don't understand why it was locked, was it already like that on the original computer, is it something the hard drive does, and most importantly, does it have anything to do with me not being able to read it with QuickTime?
Anybody knows something that can help? Thanks!

It doesn't. I think the problem is that i had FileVault on when the files were backed up to the Western Digital external drive. I needed to turn FileVault off because my account had reached its maximum space and I needed to raise the level. The files were backed up in encrypted mode to the WDD, then I had to delete them off the MacBook to free up space on my account to turn FileVault off (freakin stupid thing to do but that is what was required). Once FileVault was off, i tried to restore those files and now they are unreadable.
So my assessment is that they are still encrypted, but the computer doesn't know how to deencrypt to open them. Talk with Apple service today and they weren't sure if turning FileVault back on would allow me to deencrypt the files on the WDD. I tried it, nope. didn't work.
So I am stuck with 5 months of videos of my toddler son that are on my backup, but no way to bring them back in a readable format. Hence my "slightly" panicking state.
What doesn't make sense is that if you have FileVault on and you are backing up your files to an external and they are encrypted, shouldn't you be able to restore them if your computer crashed and you had to reset everything, including FileVault? So far, all the answers are "don't know, you could be screwed."
    Thoughts???

  • How do I save a .mov file to camera roll with IOS6

I uploaded the new IOS6 op system and now I cannot save a .mov file to my camera roll.  The option is not there as it was in IOS5.
Anyone having this issue and are there any work arounds?  Thanks

Import it to iTunes by drag to the open iTunes Music window.
Mark it there by clickin once.
Go to the menu and search for "new version for…" .
Wait, if ready, right-click the new file once and you can see it in the finder to work with it.
    But do not change location.
Only work with a duplicate by holding down option key when dragging to an other place.
If you want to delete it from its original location, do it within iTunes.

  • Watching movie files on ipad just with the connection kit

Hello everybody. A simple question. Can I watch movies on the ipad 2 only with the connection of an usb stick? Or have I copy the file on the ipad 2 to watch the movie? Thanks

The kit is aimed at copying content from digital cameras, so it only copies into the Photos app, not into the Videos app. I've just tried it with a couple of videos via the CCK - an MP4 video copied into the Photos app and played there, an M4V originally downloaded from iTunes copied into Photos but won't play there (plays ok when synced from my computer into the Videos app).
The supported video formats on the iPad are (from http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/) :
Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format

  • How to get movie files on my iPad with out a computer

Can you please let me know if there is any way that I can put my movie files onto my iPad 2 with out having a lap top or a computer with me when I head order sea's. Please email the response to my [email protected] address. I am trying to find a way that I can add my movie files onto my iPad when I do not have access to a computer but I have access to the Internet.
    THanks
    Dave

Where are these movie files now? You can't copy DVD's directly onto it, so you'll need some kind of computer to access them to get them on the iPad.
If you can get them into a cloud storage app such as Dropbox, you can then view them on your iPad.

  • Need help viewing mov. files in Quicktime 10, with Mac OS X, 10.6.7

I have Quicktime 10.0, and laptop with Mac Os X, version 10.6.7. I can't view certain mov files. So I looked up info online, that said to download Quicktime verson 7 to run with Version 10.0. When I downloaded Quicktime 7, I was told I could not install it because I already had Quicktime 10.0. Could definitely use some help!

Thank you so much! I successfully download the other version of Quicktime.
But, I'm still unable to view my mov file. I looked at the 'more info' tab and the Codecs is: MPEG-2 Video, Linear PCM, Timecode.
Any ideas of how I can get this file to play in Quicktime, or open in Final Cut?

  • How can i create a .mov file from image sequence with different durations

how do u create an image sequence with different durations? image one stays for 10 seconds and image two may stay for 30 and so on. each one has a custom duration. can this be done with an apple script or a text file saved as an mov file?

    Hello Omar,
The example code Programmatic Printing of TestStand Reports - Modular contains a sequence that will convert an XML file to an HTML file given the XML file's path and the path to the stylesheet.  It may need to be altered to fit with the modifications you have already made to the report generation routines, but I think it should definitely get you off on the right foot.  Let me know if you have any questions!

  • How do I convert MOV file to H.264 with QT Pro?

Hey where is the option to select h.264 in the drop down menu for "export"?
I have been trying to convert an MOV file I took with my pocket camera to H.264, so I can upload it to Google video .
But when I clic on "Export" I get all kind of options like "movie to bmp, movie to avi, movie to iPod, ect. ect. ect. ect."
But where is the option for "movie to H.264"?
I don't see it. So I selected "Movie to Mpeg4" , thinking that this might work just as well for uploading to Google videos. I kind of would rather use H.264 instead because Google says it accepts it and I think it would be a smaller more compressed file.
My QT Pro version is 7.2,,,,,,,maybe that is the problem.
Any Ideas out there? Please help, I have been spending all day trying to do this simple task with a 9 min. clip. whew!
    Thanks, -Scott

Ok you guys, here is what happened. When I click on the "export" drop down menu and I selected "mpeg 4" Then I clk. "options" and then I clk on the "Video Format" drop down , all that I can select is ,'None, MPEG-4 Basic and MPEG-4 Improved.
As QTKirk mentioned above, "pick a container and then pick the codecs." In this case select the "MP4" File Format and then see if the H.264 can be selected.
H.264 is there but not highlighted, why? I do not have the option to select it...... I tried. It is all grayed out. So is the option "Pass Through".
See above. If you reset the File Format to "MP4" and the H.264 option is still not available, then I would suspect that the file is not "fully supported" by QT. MOV is a file container -- not a codec. Had assumed your model would likely be the QT supported MJPEG/Wave combination but I could be wrong.
also the option for video size selection is all grayed out for selecting 640X480 or anything bigger. The only video size options that are in full black, for selection are 352X288, 320X240, 176X144 and 160X120. My original file is 640X480.
Once again, the MPE4 (ISMA) File format is tied to specific "standardized" settings while the MP4 option is not. Switch to the MP4 option and see if all options be come available. Also note, making your encode dimensions larger than your source file can reduce the quality your final product (i.e., make it "fuzzy" in this case).

  • Nikon D7000 mov file canot play RT with MPE

Please need help. My nikon D7000 mov file(H.264/MPEG-4 AVC) canot be played RT in MPE. my system specs is i7 2.8ghz, 12GB RAM, Geforce GTX 285, editing mode and presets is DSLR 1080p 23.98 which is same on D7000 file. MPE enabled. When i import the native file from camera, indeed i copied all file to hard drive which is also RAID0 configured, then import to the bin and when i place in the timeline it struggle to play RT just after 20sec. I have heard a lot about RT playback in MPE for DSLR files, where i am going wrong what is the way to have right workflow, i do not want to transcode the original file.

Hi, its PC on windows 7 64bit.
For an editor, the 1st requirement is RT playback of media. I have read from adobe, edit DSLR file natively and can edit RED 4K file with couple more layes.
But in my case an simple QT H.264 small size file is struggling to play.
HI Jim (For the record, hardware acceleration doesn't help at all with simple playback.  Only certain effects and such are accelerated.  The CPU is still the biggest factor in smooth playback with such heavily compressed files).
But this same file  plays back smoothly on windows media player, my step is to work on original file & avoid transcoding to maintain quality and time.
Well i say again for editor the 1st thing RT palyback is imp., i understand to render if i use FX or compositing.

  • .mov files did not transfer with iphoto pics

I recently used my macbook on a long trip and used it to capture the many pictures and videos I took with my digital camera. Once back, I copied (or so I thought) the contents from the macbook to my imac. However, though all the pictures (jpgs) transferred, the movie files did not. However, the thumbnails do show up on the imac but don't actually contain the movie (shows 00:00 as duration).
I've verified that the movies still exist within the data folder (pictures/iphoto library/data) but unable to move these over back into iphoto on my imac so as to sync back up with the thumbnails. Please help.
    thanks,
    ~Dennis

    TD...
Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, the only files that show up when I do file export..ORiginal are the existing pics in iPhoto....not the ones I had transferred before. The movie files do not show up....however, they are still somewhere in the computer as I can run spotlight and find them (it points to the Pictures/iPhoto Library/Data area.
Again, when I originally copied over the files from laptop to desktop, the thumbnails can be seen ion the desktop within iphoto however, the actual movie content is not there.

  • Combine several Quicktime (.mov) files into a DVD with chapters

I made several Quicktime movie segments (.mov) that I periodically upload to Youtube. Now I have a collection of these short 30 secs to 5 minute videos that I want to incorporate into 1 DVD.
How do I burn it with chapters to represent each videos?

I was experimenting on different formats (they are converted to mp4, m4v and mov files before uploading to Youtube) at the beginning before I settled on .mov files. My Macbook only have 80 gigs so I want to preserve all of the clips I did in DVDs before I erase them from the hard drive before importing/starting a new tape. All of them were captured using a Sony Digital 8 camcorder.

  • Displaying HDV 1080i50 .mov file in FCE captured with Final Cut Pro

    Hi
I cannot display (in Final Cut Express) a clip in a .mov file that contains HDV 1080i50. The file was created on a different Mac computer running Final Cut Pro. The source was a Sony Z1 camera. No hardware card was used.
I get the error message in FCE - "Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corresponding hardware card"
Can Final Cut Express work with HDV 1080i50 created from FCP?

You didn't say what format the video was, but you can use MPEG Streamclip to convert that video to something that works in FCE.
The important thing is that you'll want to match the settings you convert this video to so that it matches your timeline settings. This will make everything much easier to work with and eliminates the need to constantly render the timeline.
Do you have other content you are going to be working with in addition to just this one clip? If it's just this one clip, you will probably want to use the "Easy Setup" settings of HD, AVCHD-Applie Intermediate Codec 1920x1080i50. You'll want to use MPEG StreamClip to convert that video to matching settings -- specifically tell it to convert to AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec). If you have other media/clips you're working with in addition to this one, you'll then need to decide what format you want to use for the timeline and Easy Setup. If you post those details, we can try to help out.

  • How do I move files onto a G4 with OSX 10.3.9?

    Brethren,
I just gave my G4 Quicksilver to my fiancee and she is having trouble moving her laptop files onto it. She has a bunch of MP3's (songs you'd puke if you had to listen to) and jpegs (billions of them) but no streamlined way of moving the data...since the G4 Quicksilver doesn't have Migration Assistant. So, to summarize:
*origin computer: iBook G4 OSX 10.4.11*
*destination computer: G4 Quicksilver OSX 10.3.9*
I'm hesitant to shell out $116 for the Leopard upgrade but *is there any other way to move the data from laptop to desktop?*
    Shank

Connect the computers with a FireWire cable, start up the iBook with the T key held down, and move the files over manually.
