Mov files will no longer play -how to convert them to a playable format?

Okay, I read Steve Job's "Thoughts on Flash". Fine I get it.
So how do I convert an older Quicktime, flashbased mov file to something playable?
I have a mov file I need for an assignment for school and I been trying for a month to convert it to something that I can listen to. (It's a quicktime mov file but it only has audio.)
I've been trying to convert it on a PC since most of the programs I read about for file conversions were PC only programs. Six tries no solutions. (See my posts and requests for help in the PC Quicktime area of Apple discussions.) All give error messages and say they cannot convert the file.
So... are there any format conversion programs (free) for Mac that will convert this file to something playable? I have the ibook G4 with 10.3.9 I can try on. (The G4 tower just died - power supply is toast)
I am so frustrated and running out of time. Thanks for any ideas or help.

So let me see if I understand this.
I would attach an external hard drive to the computer via usb.
I would put a copy of the OS 10.3.9 on the external hard drive with an install of Quicktime 7.2 (still flash capable)
Then use a sound recording program to record to a different format.
I didn't know you could successfully have a second OS on an external drive without problems. Anything in particular to be careful of, or to do or not to do? Do I have to start up the laptop with the external drive disconnected and then connect it after start up?
These won't fight with the current OS on the laptop? or the current Quicktime install on the laptop?
Question: can I remove the hard drive from the just expired G4PowerPC and put it in a case and attach it by usb to the laptop? I'm pretty sure it's Quicktime version is 7.2 and I have a paid for copy of sound studio on that hard drive. The G4 hard drive is used to being the master drive vs the slave. Do I have to move the jumpers or is there something else I have to do? It's got OS10.3.9 and OS9 on it.
I don't know if my mov file has any enabled clicks or not. How would I know or find this out? What would this look like or how would it behave?
Thanks for the idea.

  • ITunes music files will no longer play

    Hi,
I have recently transferred my iTunes library back from an external hard drive to my native iMac hard drive. I kept the original iTunes music folder on my iMacs native hard drive so thought this would be simply a case of resetting the folder under the advanced preferences tab; however I now cannot play any of the music. (I have also reformatted the external hard drive as have just set it up as a Time Machine)
    Any help - much appreciated

My library draws from a folder containing the music files. I delete files from that folder often
Don't delete files from that folder.
Delete them from iTunes and let iTunes delete them from that folder.

  • A movie I bought a while ago will no longer play, instead it just shows a black screen and no audio. All of the other movies in my library play fine. Any ideas as to whats going on or how to fix it? Thanks for any help.

    Hi 22chill,
I recommend that we delete and re-download the movie from your purchase history:

  • Quick time movies (.mov) files will not play in Iphoto 11.

Quick time movies (.mov) files will not play in Iphoto 11. The thumbnail of the movie shows but when selected only a exclamation mark appears.  I rebuilt the library, thumbnails, permissions etc. I also found the movie files in the iphoto database intact and working. Please advise.

    You're welcome.
Well believe it or not, that's exactly what the exclamation point means. Search the forum. I've been doing this a while.
Next, I have no interest, commercial or otherwise in Library Manager, I have no shares in the company that makes it. I didn't make it. It's not my software.  You could give those guys a million dollars and I'll get nothing from it. I and other expereinced users have recommended it thousands of times on this forum for this problem. Amazing how often it works. Of course, a quick search would have told you that already.
Another: Believe it or not you can use the Rebuild Function of Library Manager for free. You don't need to purchase it for that purpose.
Y'all have a nice paranoid day now.

  • When I import audio and move it into my timeline the project will no longer play?

When I import audio and move it into my timeline the project will no longer play?

The audio is a .wav file created in Audacity.
    The OS is Windows XP
    The verison is CS4
I have included images of the Sequence settings and the playback settings because I was not sure what information you would need.
I am not sure what you mean by waiting for the Audio to conform but I know I have imported the audio and gone back the next day and tried to place it in the timeline and it still did not work.

  • ITunes will no longer play nor add to the library any mp3 files which I have created by conversion from a wav file.

I am running iTunes 10 on XP Pro and it will no longer play those mp3 files which I have created by conversion from wav files.  I tried to delete some from the library and then re-add them but iTunes will not add them back to the library.
Can anyone help solve this, please?

Back up your purchased music before you upgrade, I've read at least 5 cases where purchased music has just gone.....missing.
That is not supposed to happen, didn't happen to me or thousnds of other iTunes users, but you don't want to be the 6th person, do you?
There are two things to try before you upgrade:

You get this message because  iTunes can’t find the file. This can happen for a number of reasons:
The song file or a folder in its path was renamed
The song file or the folder it is in has been moved
The song file has been deleted
The device containing the song files e.g. external drive is not accessible or the drive letter has changed.
Do any of these aply to you?

  • Music I have purchased from Itunes will no longer play on my laptop.  When I click on a song to play it, it says the file cannot be found.  Does anybody know what to do?

Purchased music from I-tunes will no longer play when I hit play.  The message "music file cannot be located" pops up and then takes me to some other file system.  Does anybody know what to do?  I have already tried to make sure that my Itunes player is default and that is not the problem.

  • Here is a crazy problem. My home movie will no longer play in iTunes.

I created a home movie using Final Cut Pro X.  I shared it to ITunes.  The video played ok.  I then changed the name of the video under the "get info" tab in iTunes, and the thumbnail view of the video changed from the first frame of the movie to a picture of a film reel and the movie will no longer play.  I tried changing the name back to the original, shutting down iTunes and the computer itself, copying the movie, all to no avail.  I also tried accessing the movie from the finder, and it would not open using QuickTime or VLC.  Any ideas?

The lack of a purchase date, although I am not quite sure why it happens, does not in itself prevent the track from being authorized and played.  However, since the account name is correct and they have disappeared from your purchase history, something may have been corrupted.
Unless someone here has a better idea,  you should take it up with iTunes Customer Service.

  • Quicktime 7.2 will no longer play specfic mp4 files

Quicktime 7.2 will no longer play specfic mp4 files that 7.1 and earlier versions play fine, But new mac running 10.4.10 will not let me install earlier version, these files where used and edited fine on similar spec mac running 10.4.9 (both intel)

    You did nothing wrong!
Quicktime has never played wmv files natively. You ned to download and install Flip4Mac WMV Player from  http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac-wmv/overview.htm  (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)

  • Video will no longer play, cannot add video content either.

Since this afternoon, iTunes video will no longer play. Not movies, not TV shows. I checked and music and podcasts still play. I thought it might be a conflict between purchased video vs video I added from my DVDs, but no such luck. Purchased content will not play. Nor can I add any new video, whereas I added a new TV show episode this morning.
If I go into the iTunes LIbrary file and select a video and choose "Play with Quicktime" the video plays just fine. But if I select "Play with iTunes" nothing happens. At all. Not even an error code. It's like I didn't select anything. If I try to add content by the keystroke "command O" and choose the file … again, nothing. No error. Just no response at all. When I open that file on my computer, select "Play with Quicktime", then choose "Share with iTunes" inside Quicktime I do finally get an error. "This file cannot be shared (error 206)". I looked up this error code and found this: "The filename or extension is too long." This does not make sense. The file names are fine and the extensions are exactly what I always use to add content to iTunes.
So it's like the entire video portion of iTunes has ceased to function. Any clues?

There are a g-zillion posts sharing your problem... but still no answer from Apple. The odd thing is that it is not affecting all of us.

  • Lots of my music will no longer play after latest update

    Hello,
I have a lot of music that will no longer play in my iTunes after the last update.  it doesnt happen with all my music, but a lot of it, and as far as i can tell, movies and tv shows are still good.  when i click on the song, it just skips forward over a lot of songs that it cant play until it gets to the next one that it can play.  to make things stranger, i synced my iPad to my iTunes, and the ones that cant play in my iTunes will play on my iPad.  when i try to open the song using QuickTime player, i get the following error: error -2002 a bad public movie atom was found in the movie
what is a bad movie atom and why am i getting the error when trying to play an audio file, and why wont they play in my iTunes but will on my iPad.
    System: Win7 Ultimate 64bit AMD A10 8GB RAM
    iTunes : 11.4.0.18
    QuickTime : 7.7.5
    any ideas?
    thanks

The contacts is saved on Google or Backup Assistance (Whichever you are using) and you can use ES File Explorer like I posted at http://community.vzw.com/t5/Android-Apps/Simple-way-to-Backup-apps-for-Hard-Reset/td-p/658707 , so you really wont loose anything but apps data...
BUT, I am not saying that you do this if that is your only issue...  I was just pointing out that this is a good ideal to do with any Major Updates..
If the contacts isnt linked again you should get the option to link them again once the OS boots, normally it checks and then prompt to link again..

  • About 1/3 of my 4100 tunes will no longer play.  Please help!

Over the past year I have spent countless hours painstakingly adding appropriate track information, cover art etc. I like the tracks to be attached to the original album, not a best of. I also have a lot of extended versions, remixes etc which then have to be attached to the specific 12" or cd-maxi single etc and a lot of hard to find - hard to attach stuff. Needless to say - I don't want to do it again.
Anyway - I just noticed that a large quantity of tunes (looks like about 1/3 of the library) will no longer play. Double click on them and nothing happens. No cover art - it's as if the song is not there. A look at the "get info" shows the track in the right place with everything pointing to where it should be ... but no play. To add insult to injury, I can't get them back by double clicking on the track itself in Explorer. It still will not play. And these songs are not corrupt. I have been playing them for some time now without issue. How can I save my library and information and get these tracks to play again.
Side note: this has happened before, usually after an iTunes update and typically with only a few tracks, never this widespread.
    Please help!

I have made it a standard practice to keep a copy of all music files - tracks under the Album -- at a separate folder location.
Do you have such a back up location of your music tracks? If you do, I'd suggest to try this:
Delete all tracks, that are NOT playing, belonging to one Album in iTunes. Then locate the folder in your backup location where this Album's tracks are located, and ADD this folder to iTunes. Then check to see if these play OK.
If they do, then repeat the process for all the rest.

  • Adobe Premiere Pro CC will no longer play program after weeks of editing it

Adobe Premiere Pro CC will not longer play my program when hitting the play arrow.  The first time I hit it will play.  But if I stop and then hit play again it just basically hangs up.  I've been editing this program for several weeks in Windows 8.1 with over 1TB of free disk space.  It would occasionally not play but if I restarted the program it would go again and I continued on.  However, now it has the problem on this program all the time.      Basically I'm not able to put the finishing touches on my program and have not been able to use Adobe Premier Pro for several weeks now.   I'm basically paying a 1 year subscription for a program that is not working correctly.  WHAT IS ADOBE DOING TO FIX THIS PROBLEM?   I see that there are countless people having this issue on the web, so I figure ADOBE is aware of this problem.    IS THERE A NEW RELEASE TO COVER IT?  IF NOT WHEN WILL THERE BE A RELEASE TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE?
If I start a new program it seems to work ok... but I probably have over 100 hours into the current program... starting over from scratch would not be good.. and what guarantee would there be that the problem would not occur again after another 100 hours was invested into it?

Thanks for the suggestion, I will give that a try.   It didn't work to go back a few weeks on the first try.  As I get a chance I will try more saves that are further back.
Adobe Premiere Pro is working for me for the new music video project I'm working on today.
It's just this other program is large.  1/2 hour length.   If I push play it will work the first time.  Then after I stop, and move the cursor to another spot, as long as I wait 2 or 3 minutes for it churn away and update the monitor, then it will play again.    As long as I wait 2 or 3 minutes each time it won't crash.   If I don't wait and start pushing multiple play and stop requests it will crash.   My machine has 12G of memory and 1Tb free disk space, and runs at burst speeds above 4GHz.
Several weeks ago I also had this problem.   I deleted all the render files and rebuilt them, and after that it worked for quite a while.  This time I've tried that twice and it didn't help.
Maybe it has something to do with the order in which I render the sequences?    I might try that again, and experiment with the order of rendering.
