Mov import size

I create technical support movies for a software company and these are always non PAL or NTSC sizes. For example the latest one I'm working on is 980 x 569 and uses captures from iShowU
However, I also need to show windows within this area that have captured footage from a video camera - to show the software working in conjunction with an external hardware device.
Is Final Cut Express capable dealing with this, effectively allowing me to import a project that's 980 x 569 and not letterboxing it down to PAL or NTSC but then allowing me to import an NTSC video part and size it within the 980 x 569 project window?
Many thanks in advance for any help

FCE is a fixed resolution app. DV, HDV and _AVCHD on Version 4_.
When stuff hits the Timeline it will be crunched to conform.
You should consider FCPro.

  • 640x480 Max Movie Import Size???

I like to make family videos in FCP and port them over to iTunes for both my AppleTV as well as iPod's. I have used handbrake and compressor and everything works fine except for one thing - they wont sync with my iPod touch, iPhone or classic. They will only do so if I keep the video resolution below 640x480. I would really like to bump it up to 853x354 like my iTunes movies (which do sync). Is Apple purposely limiting imported video sizes or do purchased movies have a smaller copy within them for viewing in iPods? Thanks for any help.

I know many like handbrake, it might take a few types to try before you find one you like,
i do find that MP4 is the best format but xvid works well too.

  • Does iMovie alter movies imported at full 1080i (1920x1080) ?

I have a new Sony HDR HC9 1080i camcorder (Mini DV tape).
I heard rumors that iMovie converts movies imported at full 1920x1080 to something like 900 x 480.
Is there any truth to this ugly rumor?
    Thanks.
    Paul

    This not not exactly true.
iMovie imports movies into Event files at the same resolution as their source. If you import 1920x1080 in AVCHD, the event contains an AIC file in 1920x1080.
However, when you use the Event footage in a project, the standard iMovie pre-sets for rendering top out at 960x540 (which is exactly half of 1920x1080). However, by using the Export to QuickTime option, it is possible to render in full 1920x1080.
However, for most people, the 960x540 is good enough. It is about the largest size that can be reasonably streamed over the internet. It is the largest size accepted by the Apple TV. And it easily upscales to 1920x1080 on a high quality receiver/TV with upscaling circuitry. If you are burning a DVD, it will be downscaled to 480i anyway.
As I mentioned, you can export in full 1920x1080 through QuickTime. The issue is "How do I play it?". Some people have reportedly been successful playing these files on a Sony Playstation 3. The new version of Toast allows you to Author BluRay DVDs and you may be able to play them on a BluRay player. You can also play them on your Mac Screen if you have the display resolution set high enough. A 1920x1080 will take up most, if not all, of your computer screen.
As for the Toast BluRay option: It is not practical for me to buy a BluRay burner for USB, since these run over $1000. The SATA BluRay burners are around $300, but my iMac does not have an external SATA port. However, with Toast 9, they claim you can make a BluRay-playable disk from a standard DVD. It holds about 20 minutes of high def content. I am going to burn a BluRay disk using the same project rendered in 1920x1080 and 960x540 to see if I can tell the difference.

  • Resizing Flash Movie to Size of Site

I am developing a html Web site with a flash intro
and need help because I am learning all over again, not having done
    it in 3 years.
The screen is to start out white and fade to silver, which I
did quite nicely after many frustrating moments of relearning and
conditioning and realized it was quite simple. The movie is 600x400
and I developed the site at 1028x768 with my html layer for the
    site at: <div id="Layer1" style="position:absolute; left:125px;
    top:7px; width:686px; height:623px; z-index:1">. The flash movie
    layer is: <div id="Layer1" style="position:absolute; left:128px;
    top:-68px; width:602px; height:424px; z-index:1"> which I
changed to the html one and it did not work.
Then I went back to Flash and tried to change the movie size.
Well that was a trip. The stage is somehow off center to the right
and when I used the hand to move it, it did not work
Anyway, what I am trying to do is start the page off with a
white background full screen and have the flash movie start out as
white with a black dot and then fade to silver until the dot turns
into the logo. The flash movie does this, but I can't figure out
how to put it on the first page so when viewed the user will only
see the movie and not the movie with a white background. Also can't
figure what glitched when I was playing with it to get the stage
    off centered.
If you want to see the movie, I can show you and please no
jokes because the item my friend is selling is a bit different but
    highly used
    Thank you in advance...StarShine

Am I missing something or your long story has nothing to do

If you want your flash file to be displayed full

is this normal, or can i get this file size down some how

I have seen stuff on myspace and seen movie longer and the

    hi again.
i have just saved the SWF file and when i play it, it does
not show the whole movie, it only shows about 80% of it length and
    height.
what i mean by this is the following...
for example.. this is the whole movie screen size
but i only get this size
the right size and botton parts of the movie are cropped off
    the screen
i have just uploading it to my site to test it out there too,
and the same thing happen there.

  • Problem with .mov importing as audio

    Hello!
I'm an old school filmmaker who last did intensive stuff when miniDV was king
Now I find myself at a new job shooting and editing testimonials. Everything was fine for a whole year until I tried to import video from another videographer.
I'm on a Windows 7 machine with Premiere Pro CC v.7.1.0
The note on the footage says shot on Panasonic AF150 (AF100?) 1080 p 60i
The .mov import as audio only. I have tried all kinds of sequence settings to change this. No dice.
Also, the footage has, I believe it's called, "Judder". (I can watch the footage with my QT or VLC player.)
Using a video conversion software I was able to import as MP4. But holy heck do I really have to convert all the clips before I can bring them in?
I am pretty clueless about codecs, which is likely the problem. So a quick explanation on codecs and good places to read up on them would also be extremely helpful.
Here's another issue - the videographer used a fisheye lens (or setting?) for some really nice B roll shots. Unfortunately, they are 4:3 and the  interviews are 16:9! Is this common and ends up being "my problem" or did he goof?
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks. I do have Quicktime installed (which is why I was able to watch it on players outside of Premiere.)
    And the update didn't help

  • Determining movie stream size in javascript

    Hi guys,
Is it possible to determine flash movie stream size of any movie using JavaScript only?
    Thanks!

    JProg,
I am relatively new to programming so I am having some
conceptual difficulties with your suggestion, it
sounds really good, but I can't honestly say that I
    understand this fully.
When you say "dump a java class on the server that
will serve as a local file metadata querier" I am a
little stumped. I have a basic understanding of what a
metadata querier is (basically something that gets
info off the server for you) however there are two
things that I would appreciate help with:
1). How does one go about dumping a java class onto
    the server?
2). What class would one use?
If you can provide any help with these two points it
will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the advice so
    far.
    Regards
    Davo
What I meant is create a Java Class that queries File MetaData. Compile it, then put it on the server.
Create an RMI server on the server-side that you would use as a proxy for this class.
From the client-side, call the proxy via the RMI Stubs that were generated when you compiled rmi server. Pass the file name, the stub will send the filename to the querier proxy that serves as RMI server, then this proxy will call the actual file meta data querier passing to it the filename, get the metadata in return, and sends them back to the client.

  • IPhoto library size and movie imports - getting HUGE!

In iPhoto 08- (in my primary library) I have 23,000 photos, and about 300 movies (some MPEG) from an older Sony digicam, and now I have a Canon Powershot TX1 which is a flash based still digicam/720P HD camcorder that captures very large AVI's (depending on shot length, they range from 30MB to 400-500MB). I know I can choose on import to not bring them into iPhoto, and just bring in the still shots. However, it does make it easy to bring them into iPhoto along with the still pics, but I am concerned about the growing size of my 45GB library (1 of 3 libraries - I have not been splitting them up in the last couple of years, relying on the fact that iPhoto is stable with very large libraries- and going to enable a Time Capsule w/ Time Machine very soon). Time Capsule would save me here, right? Am I playing with fire here on the library size, and setting myself up for a crash?? There are so many downsides to multiple libraries when it comes to projects, searches, imports, etc. I'd love to know that I can safely stick with one.
Wondering also if I should NOT import the movies into iPhoto, and keep them seperate? The benefit to doing this, is that we can post MULTIPLE movies to the .Mac gallery at the same time, and have them appear as seperate movies...whereas in iMovie 08, if I put a bunch of clips into a project to post to .Mac gallery, it compiles them as a single movie - which is, many times, not what we want.
Any advice here is greatly appreciated!!!

    GaryFL1:
You might consider creating a separate library for the movies and see if that will speed up your primary library. If you needed a movie in an album to create a web gallery you could put it in an album in the Movie Library and copy that album to your working library.
A lot of iPhoto's quickness depends on both CPU power, RAM and free space on your boot drive. I would imagine your iMac would be your primary iPhoto machine and it should meet the CPU and memory criteria. How about your free space?
Time Machine is a very good backup device in my experience. Depending on how big your backup drive is and how much you're backing up, you can go back in time a fair amount. I've got a 750 GB TM drive backing up my boot drive and one external. It now goes back 5 1/2 weeks for me.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Movie import Methods

Not sure if this is the best forum for this question, but I couldn't determine a better place.
I have a lot of video content from a number of different cameras and tape formats from the past 50 years.
Some of the footage is from 8mm that were transfered to VHS tape.
Some footage is on DVDs from competitions.
Some footage is on Hi8 tapes.
Some footage is on MiniDV tapes.
Some footage is from various point and shoot cameras in different formats, mpg, avi, mov, etc.
Some footage is on mobile phones.
I want to be able to digitize all of these various footage sources that aren't already digital.
I do not know when I will get around to working on creating movies from the footage, but want it available when I do.
I want the digitized footage to be in the highest quality possible and in a format that will be readible by imovie and possibly FCP.
I currently have imovieHD 6 and imovie 11.
I have an old Dazzle DV converter box. This converts composite/Svideo inoputs to a DV and with firewire to computer.
    What I started:
I went through all the different tapes to make lists of what is on each one.
I used a VHS player with SVideo to Dazzle and imovieHD 6 to import the footage as DV. It's overkill on size/quality but seemed to be the easiest.
I did the same for Hi8, Digital8 tapes.
I used the MiniDV camera directly through firewire to imovieHD6 to capture the footage.
Plan to use Handbrake to convert the DVDs, but not sure what would maintain the best quality and compatiblity.
Also, not sure which point/shoot camera footage formats are compatibile with iMovie/FCP to know if I should convert them.
Once I have all this footage, organizing is the next project.
Is there ways to save metadata to video files like photo files? What to be able to identify what the footage is later. I could just use the filename, but wanted to know if there is other ways.
Due to the size of the video files, I will need to keep them on external drives and not connected to the computer.
What would be a good suggestion to have a footage library and be able to see what footage I have without connecting the drive?
I guess this is a long meassge to state the following:
I want to be able to store all footage on a harddrive for easier access in a format that can be used by imovie/FCP.
I want to be able to scan through to see what footage I have using some sort of management program.
I want to be able to maintain metadata with the footage for identifying what the footage is.
The main problem is I don't work on video projects often anymore.
When one comes up, I cringe because I think of all the work it will take just to prepare the footage first and I end up not doing it.
    Trying to prepare in advance.
Thanks for reading and any suggestions are welcomed,

  • Long Movie Import Failure

I have imported several mp4 movies- short ones (under 15 minutes) work with no problem. Longer ones (45 minutes) will go through the import process, but not appear in the Event screen. The event name is there, but no video, even after watching the import countdown.
Does anyone know why longer mp4s would not show up after importing?

As mentioned, your results can depend heavily on the content. I have authored DVDs that long before with very acceptable results, but mostly talking head type of footage. Would not attempt with a wedding reception with lots of motion and flashing lights for instance, image would self-destruct! The calculator Harm suggested looks pretty neat, just tried it. Got the same result using an old rule of thumb, which is 560/minutes=bitrate.
Before spending hours encoding the entire program, I would try encoding a short sample using the suggested bitrate, which is about 3.3, using 2-Pass VBR encoding. Burn the sample to disc and check it out and if you are happy with it, then do the whole thing.
Also, I don't always trust the size estimate in the lower corner of AME because I believe that is figuring PCM audio, and not the actual Dolby AC-3 at 192Kbps that Encore will be using, which produces a much smaller size audio file on the disc.
Your are really pushing the limits of the DVD format at 170 minutes, but it is possible it will look ok depending on the material being encoded.

  • Movie imported from Keynote gets much bigger in GB

    Hello !
I recorded a simple presentation in Keynote and exported it to a .mov file (800x600, 13 mintues, only 10 Mb).
Then I imported it in Garage Band. Just added a short jingle at the begining, in the middle and at the end (I would have add them in QuickTime Pro, but I wanted to adjust them more precisely).
The .mov file I finally exported from Garage Band is 75 Mb in size ! But the jingles I added should be hardly 1 Mb !
Do you think, there a way to preserve the slim size of my original Keynote .mov file ?
    Thank you !

Well, you don't jump into the deep end of the pool after having just downloaded AE... that's for sure!  People have tried it, and people have failed miserably, enduring endless hours of frustration by thinking to themselves, "how tough can this stuff be?".
On the other hand, people who have recognized that AE is a "learn to walk before you run" kind of application and have started here...
