Mov to avi without recompression

If I open an .avi with QT Pro 7, trim it and then save it becomes a .mov. How do I save to .avi athout recompression? How do I cut .avi without changing the container?
Or are there any tools to transmux mov to avi?

Use MPEG Streamclip instead.
Thanks, that works. Unfortunately changing the selection is primitive so I still have to use QT Pro, as "Horror" suggested.
Still, if I had known about this one I'd probably not have bought Pro.
Included is Save as AVI.component, which should be exactly what I want, unfortunately it doesn't work. Probably because I don't have DivX (only Perian) installed. It says that DivX 6 won't do and I can't find older versions for download

There's no perfect 'plays it all' media player really except for a PC/Mac/linux machine used as a media centre, and even then some things may not work on a particular platform.
AppleTV's best feature is really a very nice user interface (even if IMO ATV2 is worse than ATV1).  Mnay other media players have rudimentary folder browser type interfaces.
If you have no desire to convert your existing content to h264, then some contenders might be:
    Boxee box
    WD Live
    AC Ryan
    Dune HD
XBOX or other devices running XBMC
I'm sure there are many other options out there but none are perfect.

  • .mov to .avi

..having tons of trouble with this!
We have a hefty PC with presentation software on it connected to our HD projector (in a theater), but the software does not take QT -- only AVI's.
How can I reliably convert a mov to an avi without loss? I tried MPEG Streamclip, but the PC does not recognize the AVI that is produces. Maybe I need add'l codecs on the PC??
    Any insight??
    Thanks

I think you hit th enail on the head in your first post. MPEG Streamclip's AVI wrapping is just fine. The question is, what codec are you using to create those AVI's? It needs to be one that is compatible with the playback codecs you have available on your PC.

  • Faster H.264 QT export without recompressing every frame?

Hi everyone, I'm trying to find a faster HDSLR workflow.
Is it possible to export H.264 .MOV without recompressing every frame?
On my HV30 I would export my HDV footage with File: Export: QuickTime movie with 'Current settings' selected. The export would take 1-5 minutes and give me fantastic quality because it would only render the edits and effects..
Now with footage from any DSLR if I do the same thing it completely messes up the exported movie. So I have to use File: Export: Using QuickTime conversion and select the appropriate setings. FCP then renders every frame which gives a perfect image but also takes about 40-60 mins of render time per 5 minutes of final video.
This is the problem - the render time.
Anyone know of any workflow that would eliminate the need to render every frame using canon DSLR's H.264 MOV files?
The best solutions and workflows will be posted in a tutorial my blog nitsantv.wordpress.com as well as nextwavedv.com (I'm a guest writer there) so any help here will be a huge help to lots of other DSLR filmmakers too. (Contributor's will get a link to their site/portfolio)
Please note that i'm trying to make a really fast workflow, so converting to ProRes before editing is not suitable.
I don't think the Epic I software will do anything to help with the matter because from what it says on the website FCP still renders from the original H.264 files when using this software.

  • From mov to avi

Is it possible to convert a mov format to avi without loosing quality and money?

Is it possible to convert a mov format to avi without loosing quality and money?
The depends on a number of factors. Since AVI is basically just an Audio-Video Interleaf container, if the source audio and video are in compression formats that can be simply "copied/intetleaved" to the target container and, if you already have software that will do this, then "Yes, it can done without loss of quality or having to purchase additional apps. On the other hand, if you have to transcode the source data as part of the interleaving process to place it in th AVI wrapper, then there is always the possibity of losing some visual quality. How much will depend on the specific codecs involved and the settings used.
As to specific software, I can't help you there since AVI is a legacy file container for which Microsoft dropped official support more than a decade ago when the more modern WMV container/codecs were introduced and now that the latest Mac operationg systems come defaulted with legacy codecs disabled. Basically, I don't see why anyone would want to use AVI with support continuing to dwindle the way is is.

Ansver i get : does not support

VLC is a good choice. While I don't know if it will play your files, Perian is a helper app for Quicktime which allows you to play a lot of things in the Quicktime Player.
There is also Flip4Mac which allows you to play windows media files in Quicktime.
Finally, note that the extension on a video file doesn't really tell you what you need to play it. The .avi, .mpg, etc. is only the wrapper around the actual video. The video is encoded by some means and needs to be decoded. The video inside the .avi can be encoded in one of many different schemes.
VLC, Perian, Flip4Mac, and many others, are all able to decode various flavors of encoding. Having all of those in your toolbox will help to allow you to play most of the things you'll find.

  • MAC & PC Video conversion MOV to AVI error

    Hello
i have a big problem and hope someone can help me:
I have to convert around 16 (1h) clips from .mov to avi.
Im currently working on a mac but my client only uses pc and he had problems with .mov files. thats why im tryng to reconvert to .avi which is more compatible with PC.
First I used compressor´s DV pal anamorphic (16:9) preset which i then reconfigured using the inspector to .avi as output format, then in adjustmenst i choose DV pal -best-16:9-48000-Stereo. I saved this as a preset and then applied to all my 1hour clips.
I left them all night converting but next morning as i opened in pc to check the files they did not work correctly.
Can someone help me how to convert these files to PC compatible platform. is h.264 worth a solution?
thanks a lot for any suggestions
    ger

    Why avi and not wmv?
If wmv will work, get flip4mac Pro. It will do the conversion for you OR get a PC and do the conversion on it using the basic windows movie maker software.

    Thank you,
Yes we've done that. They've confirmed a problem with the links/scripts on the note. The 10.1 and up version was not really 10.1 and up.
As they would not have a new version available in time for the move we needed to perform, we switched our approach to using dbms_redefinition instead.
    Thanks for the reply,

  • PSE 11 won't play MOV or AVI files

Attempting to open up movie files MOV or AVI, PSE 11 quits working and has to be force quit
    Any help welcome.

    I'm on Mac
    Thanks but I'm confused.
I just want to organize stuff, not anything else, so I just need to see what's in the video file and also have a thumbnail for it. The video files are all grayed out; clicking on them brings up a player but nothing plays and PSE 11 quits working.
I don't think that's what should be happening.
If I remember right in PSE 9 you could at least view the videos?

  • Add cue points to FLV without recompressing

    Hello All,
I'm using the standalone cs4 AME and I'm wondering if there is a way to add cue points to an existing FLV file and save it without recompressing. Seems like I must be missing something simple.
    Thanks,
    Rick

    Thanks Jim,
I'll have to check the Flash workflow.
I know in AME I can keep the same size and frame rate, so I figured somehow I could eliminate further compression.
Moyea has a product that does this:
"The program does not re-encode the files for output, making it using the original source file without compression. Since there is no conversion from the source file to the output file, you can create Flash videos with original quality."

We've reproduced this crash on two Windows 7 PCs (a 32-bit & a 64-bit PC). It happens every time when we want to convert any .mov to .avi. After clicking Options, to set conversion settings (video settings can be adjusted w/o problems, and Sound Settings CAN be adjusted when set for .mov to .mov), but after we select .mov to .avi, just clicking on Sound Settings crashes QT, every time, on both of our PCs.

  • How do you convert a file from .mov to .avi in quicktime pro

I'm using a kodak Z50 digital camera that records video files as .mov files. I was told I could convert the files to .avi files using quicktime pro, but I can't figure out how to do it. Anyone know?

I am assuming you already are able to open the movie
in QT Player. Use Export in the File menu, choose
Movie to Avi in the drop-down Export Menu and then
click on Options to choose one of the pre-loaded avi
codecs for the compression. You may also want to
search for and install one of the newer codecs, such
as 3ivx or divx since the preinstalled codecs are all
    rather old.

You need to change the code in the EVENTS section.  It curently has event listeners assigned to the stage and some buttons for calling the functions that change the slides.  What you could do is get rid of that event listener code and implement a Timer that calls the fl_nextSlide()  function.
I do not know what to answer as far as making it into an avi or mov file.  My impression with creating video files from Flash files is that the design needs to be timeline-based for that to happen (meaning it needs to play frame-by-frame along the timeline).

quicktime Pro will do it, get it from the apple store (its just a key, cost $30), also ffmpegX (shareware) will do it
sometimes you can find an application that will do it by using the quicktime libraries for free, just search a site like versiontracker
