.mov to high quality .avi

We need to convert a bunch of movies from .mov format to .avi (our organization is requiring all PowerPoint talks to be in Windows OS, not Mac- don't get me started...).
Can anyone provide specific setting to use when doing this conversion in QT Pro? With the settings that I am choosing now, the quality of the .avi movies are significantly worse than those of the original .mov movies. Size is not an issue- we can make the movies as big as we need, we just need to preserve the quality.
Thank you!

For people like me who are not too sophisticated regarding the ins and outs of digital video processing, here's a very useful answer posted on the MacFixIt Forums. I tried this program and it was incredibly easy to use and produced high quality .WMV files that play nicely with PowerPoint in a Windows OS world. Hope this helps.
... I suggest you don't bother with QT conversions. Instead

  • How to Export a HIGH QUALITY .avi file.  help PLEASE

Hi, I am trying to export my movie to an avi file, so I can upload it on youtube. I've done some searches online, but have not found any answers that work. I keep getting very low image quality, no matter what settings I choose. I've gone into quicktime preferences and saved the file in "high quality" and that doesn't work. How can I export a movie file with the same image quality as the original project? I'm using Explicit to split the file into two parts, but it can only handle .avi files. Please help!

Ah, I just converted it with the wrong compressor. I used DV/DVCPRO-NTSC prog. scan and it looks beautiful.

  • Can I move the High Quality Media folder in Finder?

When importing files for a large project (music festival, 15+ hours of footage) I left the high quality media transcoding option ticked and, with only half the footage in, I have a nearly full disc (external 1TB Lacie little big disc).
I don't intend to use these files until final rendering (I use proxy editing) so can I temporarily move this folder/files off the disc in Finder until I'm ready to use them or will this upset FCP X? Is there a better way to do it within FCP?

If you're going to edit entirely in proxy, there's no point of making optimized media. When you're done editing, switch to original playback. When you export your master file from FCP, it will export ProRes generated from the original media, which is the same as optimizing it. The only factor is if you're going to do color correction and effects in FCP, then you will want to do that on optimized media if you can rather than proxy media. There is no way around that. You will then need the ProRes files at that stage, not when you export.

  • Imported high quality AVI looks bad in PE

Hi all. I recorded a video of a computer screen using CAMSTUDIO at 200FPS (which looks great). After importing the video (avi) into Premier Elements the video is choppy & worthless. How can I change the settings on this video, so that it looks as good or close to the original?
    Thanks

    Hi,
I have a similar issue with AVI files. I have Sony Digital 8 Camcorder and through a different program I downloaded the tapes and made them into AVI files.
I was trying to make a movie with premiere 7 using these AVI files. The quality was poor. There is no smooth motion of the movies, it was kind of moving frame by frame and also at the end of the movie faces and surrounding colors was weird (as if they are negative etc..)
I chose the out put video quality to be high and format to be NTSC. I have a 3gig ram, Windows vista laptop.
Am I missing something in movie making setting. Can someone help
    Thx...

  • Exporting .mov Question: High Quality = Interlacing?

    Hi Guys-
(Please excuse the double post in the Compressor forums, this applies equally to both)...
I am rendering out a .mov file of my standard def five minute short film. I use "Export using Quicktime Conversion". Under options > settings > H.264, when I set the quality to "high", I get a decent rendering of the final product but with a noticeable decrease in quality. But when I set the quality to "best", I get what looks like an exact copy of my raw files with no quality degradation whatsoever. The problem: when I render it out on "best", you can noticeably see the many interlacing lines when it renders. I do not have this problem when rendering on "high."
Question: Is something different happening or is the quality just so crisp you can see this now? Even when I apply a de-interlace filter in compressor, you can tell there's a filter on there. How can I render this out already interlaced and without having to use a filter.
Again, this doesn't make sense to me because all of my raw editing/files never appears with these interlacing lines. Only when I make this highest quality render of the project do I get these lines. Thanks!
I should also mention the video will be going to YouTube, not to a TV.

Go to http://www.proappstips.com/ and buy Philip's "Simple Encoding Recipes For The Web" - it's only a few dollars, and contains all the info you need to know (and then some).
    Best of luck with it.

    9 hours??!
Twice the length of a cinema epic?
How are you expecting to distribute it?
    iDVD encoding settings:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/7.0/en/11417.html
    Short version:
Best Performance is for videos of up to 60 minutes
Best Quality is for videos of up to 120 minutes
Professional Quality is also for up to 120 minutes but even higher quality (and takes much longer)
That was for single-layer DVDs. Double these numbers for dual-layer DVDs.
Professional Quality: The Professional Quality option uses advanced technology to encode your video, resulting in the best quality of video possible on your burned DVD. You can select this option regardless of your project’s duration (up to 2 hours of video for a single-layer disc and 4 hours for a double-layer disc). Because Professional Quality encoding is time-consuming (requiring about twice as much time to encode a project as the High Quality option, for example) choose it only if you are not concerned abo
In both cases the maximum length includes titles, transitions and effects etc. Allow about 15 minutes for these.
You can use the amount of video in your project as a rough determination of which method to choose. If your project has an hour or less of video (for a single-layer disc), choose Best Performance. If it has between 1 and 2 hours of video (for a single-layer disc), choose High Quality. If you want the best possible encoding quality for projects that are up to 2 hours (for a single-layer disc), choose Professional Quality. This option takes about twice as long as the High Quality option, so select it only if time is not an issue for you.
Use the Capacity meter in the Project Info window (choose Project > Project Info) to determine how many minutes of video your project contains.
NOTE: With the Best Performance setting, you can turn background encoding off by choosing Advanced > “Encode in Background.” The checkmark is removed to show it’s no longer selected. Turning off background encoding can help performance if your system seems sluggish.
And whilst checking these settings in iDVD Preferences, make sure that the settings for NTSC/PAL and DV/DV Widescreen are also what you want.

  • Only top left quadrant of AVI DV files shows in High Quality mode

I'm having the same problem as this person:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3396179&#3396179
AVI files that have NTSC DV video in them only show the top left quarter of the image throughout playback when I have checked the "Use the high quality video setting..." option in Player Preferences. This occurs with direct captured footage and footage rendered out of my video editing program. Any solutions? The DV footage looks horrible in low quality mode, and makes it hard to know if your shots are actually rendered correctly, so I'd rather not have to use that.

  • How to keep a High Quality Movie Resolution using IDVD ?

    Hi,
When I connect my camcorder to the TV directly, I can see very sharp resolution video (in normal TV screen format).
If I download the same recording to Apple in widescreen format, add music to it using iMovie and then burn it using iDVD, I get very poor resolution when I watch this movie on the same TV.
Would you know how can I do to keep my sharp resolution after burning my movie using IDVD?
    Kind Regards.

    Hi
This is due to iMovie and really iMovie'08 or 09
They are aimed for quick editing to web-publishing - not high quality DVD.
iMovie 1 to HD 6 and FinalCut Express or Pro are the tool of choise for DVD or
    even Blue-Ray (needs Roxio Toast™ and ev. a Blue-Ray burner/disks)
iMovie'08 and 09 discard every second line = less quality very close to VHS.
I never managed to get full quality from them to feed iDVD.
    • Pro Quality encoding in iDVD is very sufficient to my needs and
burning out with Roxio Toast™ as Blue-Ray to standard DVD (max 20-30 minutes)
gives an even better result BUT ONLY PLAYBACK on Blue-Ray player or PlayStation 3.

  • DV AVI in high quality problem

Has anyone had this problem, or know of a solution?
I'm using QT Pro 7.1.3 / WinXP Pro.
I can play back low quality DV/DVCPRO - NTSC .avi files perfectly, but when I switch to high-quality, the player window remains the same size, but the image is cropped to the top left quarter of the window - the rest is filled with black. This top quarter displays in high quality, and plays smoothly, but is only 1/4 of the image.
If I also check off Single Field, the whole left side of the window is then displayed, but only a single field.
The files play back beautifully in Windows Media Player, but I'd prefer to use Quicktime player.
    Any hints??

    Paul -
I'm sorry you've lost files, but when you set up an account as Guest, there's a message that clearly states "When a guest user logs out, all information and files in the guest account's home folder are deleted". If you want an account where files are retained, you should create an Admin or Standard type.
You will need to use data recovery techniques to see if your file can be recovered. The more that you use your computer, the greater the risk that the file will be overwritten. You can contact a professional data recovery service such as DriveSavers (which will be expensive, but you can judge the value of the file) or try something like Data Rescue. The latter has a demo which you can install to determine if your file can be recovered, and then, on purchase, you can actually recover the file.
    Good luck!

You should check that the Project settings match the clip settings before editing them to the Timeline.
Only newly created Projects will change not existing ones by adjusting the Project settings.
If, for example, you have a Project set to NTSC DV you can only end up in trouble if the clips are PAL 1920 x 1080i.

  • VHS TO FCP TO QT NOW NEED AVI HIGH QUALITY

We have a two minute segment given to use in vhs format (poor quality) to begin with. I imported into FCP 4 and exported high qual quicktime and it plays & looks okay on both mac and pc. However, we need to insert video into powerpoint on pc. I'm having a hard time getting anything that is not pixelated and grainy. I've tried the codecs known to work on pc, cinepak & sorenson, same pitiful result. Any thoughts and/or suggestions for 3rd party products? Ideally, getting a higher quality source would be preferable but that is not an option.

For maximum compatibility MPEG1 is a good choice. Virtually anything in the world can play it. Later machines will also be able to play MPEG2 which will have better quality, but you may have trouble with sound if there is any. Beware of anything with high bit rates, particularly if it is playing back in a window on a laptop. Some will fall over, others will just freeze the laptop screen if you have an external display (projector) connected.
It will always be a compromise between quality and something that will play back on a system not designed for video (you paid a lot of money for your MAC didn't you.

  • Need to convert video and audio files in high quality

Hi to all, i need to convert file types such as .AVI, .WMV and .MOV and keep the high quality, but i dont have or know any software to do this, are there any good options out there?
I don't really want to use a trial version, thanks.

I've used FFMpegX for my conversions. I've never looked at them on a large screen to see how well the video quality held on, but they look fine on my MacBook.

  • How do I export very high quality QT to be used for a DVD?

I have a QT video (800x339, about 67mb) - it's a trailer for a movie that my daughter's in and I'd like to make put it on DVD using Adobe Premiere Elements. Unfortunately, Premiere won't accept this particular QT format (I don't understand why, but I just get an error saying that 'format not supported') - I can import other QT files, however.
Anyway, Adobe's support pages suggest converting the QT file to another format - but I've tried everything I can think of, and I just get lousy quality. I've exported from QT Player Pro to DV and AVI, using the highest 'quality' settings, etc. Some of the files are 1.3gb or more, but they all are poor quality. Is there some codec that I need to get? I can re-export the movie as a QT file and it retains the high quality that it was originally recorded in. Help!

First, on the black bars.  I do not want them at all.  I cannnot post a screenshot now as
file attachments are turned off temporarily, but they are about 5% on either side.  Totally unacceptable especially when in CS3 when exported to Encore there are NO black bars either visible in Encore or in the resulting DVD's
On the options and is the preset saved.  I can close Encore and open it afresh and find the preset that I saved listed in the dropdown of presets with the name I saved it as and all the settings the way I want them.
On the issue of Transcode settings when selecting the resource...  When I select the resource in the Project panel, or in the Timeline tab, the Transcode settings is greyed out.  I have consulted the help screens and forums for various ways to change the transcode settings and none of the suggested ways work.
It looks like my CS4 install does not work the way yours does.  I am about to completely unistall CS4 and CS3 and all other Adobe products and try a fresh reinstall to see if that works.  Most likely I will simply reinstall CS#, since that works, and abandon CS4 for now as I am getting way behind on my work, and know I can finish with CS3.  I have also heard form others that Sony Vegas is really solid and does not have all these weird bugs such as seen in CS4 and CS5, and is a much less bloated product and does the encodings faster.  Since it is also less expensive, this seems too good to be true, but work a trial.  So first rip every Adobe product off  my PC and format the HD and start fress with JUST CS3 and get my work done.  Then try Vegas to see if it is as good as my buddies say, if so bye bye Adobe!
