Move all iMovie 11 Projects and Events to new location

I'm looking to move all of my projects and events to an external HD.  I understand that you have to do this from within iMovie and it seems simple enough to move all events but the only way I've found to move Projects is individually - I've got a lot of projects, is there a way to move ALL projects in one go?

John,
You don't have to put everything in one library - it is often useful to have several.  Have a look at:  http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov3fa25bae7   on how to organize your stuff.  Since you have a lot it is worth planning how to organize it before you go ahead.
Consolidate library just makes sure that all media exists in the library as a copy not as links to files elsewhere.  It does not copy anything from other libraries.  (http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov882dee351)
If you have projects that you are in the middle of working on you may want to consider finishing them in iMovie 9.  iMovie 10 has a quite different user interface and will take some time to get familiar with.
Geoff.

  • Trying to move iMovie '11 project and event to another drive

    Hello,
I'm trying to move some iMovie '11 projects and their associated events to another hard drive, as my start up drive is full.  I currently have projects and events on my startup drive and also on an secondary internal hard drive.  That drive along with several others, shows up in my Event Library list.  I have tried clicking on my project both with the Command key and without, to drag it to another hard drive that is listed in my Event Library.  The hard drive does not "light up" and I don't get the option to "move project or move project and events."  I've tried a reboot of the application and the computer.  No luck.  Is something wrong with my iMovie application?  Or is there something else I can try?
    Thanks!
    Catherine

Here is a writeup on how to do this.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4141
One thing to notice is that there is an error in iMovie help. It says to drag the icon for the project to the icon for the external drive in the Event library. This is wrong. You drag the project icon to the icon for the external drive in the Project Library. For the Events, you drag the icon for the Event to the icon for the external drive in the Event Library.

  • How do I transfer imovie projects and events to new mac from external hard drive

bought a  macbook pro retina.  backed up 3yr old macbook pro to external hard drive.  how do I transfer imovie projects and events to new mac?  thanks!

    Hi dalbatross,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
Did you set up your new computer by creating a Time Machine backup and restoring from it?
If so, the Events and Projects that were on your internal Macintosh HD would copied to your new computer.
Here is another way to copy the events & projects to the new computer from the external drive:
iMovie Help: Work with multiple libraries
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov3fa25bae7
Copy or move projects, events, or clips between libraries or hard disks
Connect a hard disk that contains the target library to your computer, or copy the target library to your computer.
Choose File > Open Library, and choose an option from the submenu. You can choose from recently opened libraries at the top of the submenu, locate an existing library on your computer, or create a new library.
The selected library is opened in the Libraries list, with the first event selected and its contents displayed in the browser.
In the Libraries list, select the event that contains the item you want to move or copy.
In the browser, select the item you want to move or copy.Note:  To select multiple items, hold down the Command key as you click the items you want to select, or drag a selection rectangle around the items.
    Do one of the following:
To move items between events or libraries: Drag the clip or project to another event or library.
To copy items between events or libraries: Option-drag the clip or project to another event or library by first starting to drag and then holding down the Option key as you drag.
    Cheers,
    - Judy

  • IMovie - Archiving projects and events

    I use iMovie 11, 9.09 (1795)
    1.  I have some older projects and events that I moved onto external drives and now I have read that you loose stuff when you move them with finder and not in iMovie.  What do you loose and is there any way to recover them?
    2. I want to confirm that the right way to move them onto an external drive is to use command-drag within iMovie
    3. If the project in iMovie is at the top, and my drive is at the bottom off the screen, how do I drag it down to the drive off the screen?  It doesn't scroll down to it.
    Thanks!

  • Transferring projects and events to new external drive

I have been using a 2 TB external hard drive to create both personal and commercial videos using iMovie '11. Due to space limitations on the 2 TB drive, I now want to transfer the commercial video projects and events to a new 1 TB external hard drive. I started by copying one project (and associated events). I then copied a second project that uses clips from the same events as the first project. As a result, I now have two copies of the events--one copy associated with project 1 and a second copy associated with project 2. Consequently, the 1 TB hard drive is filling up fast with twice as many events as I originally had before starting the transfer process. I also have a third related commercial project that I want to transfer to the new drive, but I'm afraid I'm going to fill up the drive sooner than I expected with a third set of events. Ugh!
In effect, I want to move multiple related projects that use clips from the same events from one drive to another without losing associativity and without creating extraneous events. I would appreciate any help.

    Hi
Yes there are somer IMPORTANT steps to take and not to take.
    • DO NOT - Move or alter any folder named iMovie Events or iMovie Projects on Desktop/Finder.
If You do - iMovie get's confused and it might not allways be repairably.
    • DO
    The external hard disk
MUST BE - Mac OS Extended formatted - UNIX(DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange will not work for VIDEO !
SHOULD BE - a FireWire one as USB/USB2 performs badly
Moving Events and Projects - ARE DONE in the iMovie Program/Application and in resp. window
Just drag from one hard disk HERE to the other one and new iMovie Proj/Event folders will
be created and iMovie will find them.
AND - answer the choise if You want a full Move or a Copy made.
(Event's window can be changed to view Yearly - or - Yearly per hard disk connected
top right hand corner of window - click small hard disk symbol.)
    Yours Bengt W

  • How do I save my imovie '09 project and events to an external drive? I tried to drag it but it won't accept it?

I've been able to save/move things to my Western Digital Passpor beforet but this time it won't let me drag the project or event to the external drive.
Tons of space left on the drive. The prioject is not finished. Do I have to optimize it or something? Thanks for all replies.

external drives come out-of-the-box 'Windows'/fat32 formatted.
no prob for a Mac - except for iMovie.
use the Disk-Utility in your Apps/Utilities folder to format to 'Mac'.-
    follow advice given here

  • Moving Projects and Events - Some New Info (to me anyway)

    New Info!
Just came across this in the Apple Support site:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4740
What this says basically, is that you CAN use Finder to simply move FCP X event folders to remove them from the FCP x lists when working on current projects.
One concern is  that the support article is silent on doing the same with FCP X project folders.
Anyone have any insight on that?
My concern there was that what  I had seen earlier from Apple and other discussion boards was that a Finder move of events and projects was not secure.
Clearly one can use the FCP x Move Project command to move a project to another drive or to a disk image.  However, I am looking for a way that avoids use of a second drive or disk image.

Yes, it should work exactly the same for projects.
One thing I'd highly recommend though is to never do a finder or FCP "move" -- instead do a copy, and then trash (delete) the original once you confirm the copy worked. If, during a "move" command, something unexpected happens, you are vulnerable to losing data.

  • How to move imovie '08 projects and events from one macbook to another

    Hi,
I need to import my movies via firewire, but can only do it through my brother's macbook, as my new macbook does not have firewire.
Therefore, I imported 100 GB worth of movies onto his computer, then transferred the iMovie Events and iMovie Projects folders onto a hard drive, then transferred them from the hard drive to MY macbook. Now they are sitting on the desk top.
How do I get them into iMovie on my macbook, now that I have transferred the files from my brother's macbook onto my macbook's desktop?
    Thanks!

I guess I just needed to drag my events into my user folder ---> movie events, and then when I launched iMovie, it found them.

  • After updating from 10.0.7 to 10.0.8, I have lost all of my projects and events

I just updated FCP from 10.0.7 to 10.0.8 and now all of my events and projects are gone.  I was saving them to an external drive and the event folders are all still there, and in each one there is a CurrentVersion.fcpevent file, but when I click on it nothing happens.  Is there a way to re-import my projects?  If so, where do I go to find them?

Nevermind, I answered my own question.  I had clicked "ignore" when FCP had asked me to update my projects on boot up.  They're back now.

  • IMovie quits while copying projects and events to an external HD. Any ideas?

Here is my problem: i was running out of disk space and wanted to move my projects and events to a new, external WD hard drive. I followed to normal procedure and moved the projects within iMovie 11 to the new (meanwhile connected and displayed) WD drive. I selected to copy both, projects and events to this drive and iMovie started copying. After a while the prog crashed. Does anyone have an idea what else I can do? Is this a bug of iMovie?

I found the solution and just want to share with you...
    1. I closed iMovie
    2. I renamed my existing root folder projects and events by adding a '_' at the beginning of the folder name.
    3. I copied all my content (projects and events) within the finder and not as normally recommended within iMovie from the internal to the new external hard drive.
    4. When starting iMovie again the newly copied folder are recognized and it takes a while (depending of the amount of clips and projects) until iMovie is available after this start.
    5. The events and projects are now shown in the new external harddrive and all files are accesible. Also all clips from the events are correctly linked in the projects.
I have tried this way since the normal decribed routine did not work on my iMac (iMovie crashed every time).

  • Imovie crashing when copying Projects and Events to external

This is driving me crazy. Imovie keeps crashing when I try and copy some of my projects and events to the external from within iMovie. I can copy the project and event files separately as a work-around, but it's taking me forever. These are very short movies, less than 3 minutes, and the original footage is from a Kodak zi6. I've already copied more than 40, and all went well. Now it keeps crashing.
Why can't I just copy from the Finder. It would be a LOT faster. I'd like to keep the projects/ events linked so that I can edit in the future, if necessary.
External: Firewire, Guid Partition Table, and Mac OS extended (journaled). Lots of free room on both drives.

  • I have just updated to Final Cut Pro 10.1.4 - I have updated Projects and Events on my external hard drives (off the File menu). It's says under several project 'missing file' - but they were all there working fine before I updated.

I have just updated to Final Cut Pro 10.1.4 - I have updated Projects and Events on my external hard drives (off the File menu). It's says under several projects 'missing file' - but they were all there working fine before I updated. I am working off 2 external drives - not sure if that would make a difference.

After the update each seperate connected drive should now have a seperate Library.
The older Projects and Events folders would have to be at the top level of those drives go be seen and updated.
Were all the necessary Projects and Events in the corrrct place before updating?

  • My imovie seems to have completely crashed... and I'm hoping someone can help me. I have moved all my projects and events to a folder on my desktop. I've deleted all the plist files I can find and I still cannot get it to open.

Please help... it seems all is lost as all I kind find on this subject seem to lead to nowhere. My engagement was on imovie, a school project, several videos of our son. You will have to hold my hand through this process... as I am not very good at this type of thing. I believe I have deleted all the necessary plist files and moved my projects and events to a folder on my desktop. imovie has been upgraded to version 9.0.9... Hi
Yes this can be many things - and I can only guess/suggest.
    A. a very common origin to make the Mac un-happy is to - PANIC-HALT - when the round multicolored thing appear.
So much can go wrong by doing this - and if done often problem builds up that can result in a real disaster.
    B. NEVER - move or alter any folder named - iMovie Event's resp. iMovie Project's - as iMovie has no search function - moving them results in that iMovie get's 100% lost.
One can move them - but this HAS TO BE done within the iMovie application (as it is up and running)
    C. preference files - there are TWO or more Libraries on Your Mac. First and easy to find is the one You see when opening Your Start-Up Hard Disk window = Root Library == the WRONG ONE
What we need to find is the one in Your User-Account folder (icon as a house) - and this is in Mac OS X.7, X.8 and X.9 HIDDEN. To see it do:
( It can be done like this: Open Terminal, then enter:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
Press return, then restart, and it will always be visible until the next major update, when you do the same thing again. )
    or - do like this.
On the Finder window at the top left of the screen,
Hold down the Option key and clicked on Go.
This allowed You to see the Library folder and select it.
Then keep the Option button pressed down in order to see and select the Library folder.
Once found it, You are able to navigate to the iMovie preferences file and move it to the trash.  iMovie then start’s up fine!
Now here in Your User Library - find Preferences and trash
    com.apple.iMovie.plist
    com.apple.iMovie3.plist
    com.apple.iMovie7.plist
    com.apple.iMovie8.plist
    com.apple.iMovie9.plist
    com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
    and find
    com.apple.iApps.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this/these file/s out on to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
I Prefere another way to find out if this is the problem.
(after all folders (iMovie Event/Projects are moved into original place)
    • go up to Apple Menu
    • Down to System Pref's
    • Select Accounts - Create a new User
    • Go down the Apple menu - Log OUT
    • Log into as the new User
    Now try iMovie
Does it work at all ? (Yes You don't see Events or Projects in Your original Account just now)
If so - Then we know that there is a corrupted pref file to be trashed.
Else - the problem are much more severe.
    D. After Panic Halt / Forced Quit - I always do -. to keep disasters on arms length.
    • Repair Permissions (Apple Disk Util tool)
    • Start from other HD or DVD - then run Repair Hard Disk (Apple Disk Util tool)

  • I am attempting to update from iMovie 9 to iMovie 10. I have many movies with iMovie 9. Yet, on iMovie 10, when I press "update projects and events", it states "iMovie could not find any projects or events to update". What do I do?

I am attempting to update from iMovie 9 to iMovie 10. I have many movies with iMovie 9. Yet, on iMovie 10, when I press "update projects and events", it states "iMovie could not find any projects or events to update". Somehow it doesnt' see all the movies I have on iMovie 9 library.  What do I do?

I'm dealing with this same issue. At one point, it did recognize the Update function but then said it could not import the cache.mov and plist files which apparently means that imovie 10 can't see any of these past events. I can't figure it out.

  • IMovie - Start fresh and import all projects and events from scratch

I am using iMovie 10.0.6 on Yosemite.
I have 3 Libraries that stretch back many years.  When I open iMovie, it loads the Projects and says there are 42, but only shows about 8.  The others are missing.  The event folders show up but the event data is missing.
Basically I want to start over.  I want ONE clean library and I want to re-import all of my raw event data and the projects that I created using that event data.
How on earth does one do this?

If you have  iMovie Projects and imovie Events folders in <user name> / Movies, these are from iMovie 9, so I infer that you have transferred them from an old machine and upgraded them to imovie 10.
If this is correct you should still have your projects and events.  iMovie 10 stores everything in packages with the extension .imovielibrary.  If this has become corrupt you should be able to upgrade them again (they will automatically go into a new library).  You  will find an empty file with a name something like "updated to iMovie 10" in the events and projects folders.  These need to be trashed in order to allow them to be upgraded afreash.
    Geoff.
