Move all my songs to external harddrive

I changed the settings so that NEW songs added to my itunes library would be put in the designated folder in my external harddrive, but how can I add the old ones to it and take them off my laptop's harddrive?

Mike and Chris are already helping you, Pete. Don't see that I could do anything but confuse the issue.
Please note, though, and Consolidate will not work if you've moved tracks manually. Consolidate only works with folders to which iTunes had been set previously and where it currently correctly knows the locations. If you've moved things around and broken iTunes links to the tracks, the Consolidate command is not going to help. Just so you're clear on that; it's not clear to me from your other thread that you understand what Consolidate is for.

You can't do this yourself; if desired, you can ask the iTunes Store staff if they'll do it, but they probably won't.

  • Move all the songs in a playlist to another folder?

I was wondering if there was an easy way to take all the songs in a specific playlist and move them to another folder?
example Itunes keeps my library organized and I want to move all the songs in my top played playlist from their respective folders (I would actually rather copy and paste them) into a separate folder... Is there an easy way to do this?

Create the new folder on your desktop. Highlight the tracks in iTunes and drag to the new folder.
This action creates a copy of each file and places it in the new folder. It does not change, move, or affect the files that iTunes is already using.

  • Cant move my stuff from an external harddrive!

i have a windows laptop with a hard drive i have used for a while. all my pictures an videos are on that external hard drive. i recently just bouht a macbook and tried to move my files from the eternal harddrive onto my macbook. but it wouldnt let me. All i want to do is drag and drop my photos and videos into another folder on my desktop. How do i go about acheiving this. Thanks!

When you plug the external drive in does it mount on the desktop? If it does not can you see the drive using Disk Utility?
You can also try turning the external drive off, turning your Mac off. Hooking the drive to your Mac, turning the drive back on and giving it a few seconds to spin up, then turning your Mac on.
See if the drive mounts then.

  • How to backup Logic Pro songs on external harddrive?

In case of an earthquake or other event that ends up completely ruining my computer and kills Logic Pro, how do I make a backup of the songs I've made on an external harddrive? (Sorry this question may be extremely easy to answer, but I'm new at external harddrives.)
I've bought a portable USC Drive with 120GB. Do I just need to make a copy of the Logic Pro song files and transfer them to this portable drive? Or do I need to load more information about Logic Pro onto it as well? And does my XS key have any involvement in case the my compuer is ruined and I need to extract the song from this portable drive?
    Thanks for any answers!

if ur logic project are not messy u just copy the folder where are all ur logic project to ur external hardrive that's it.the logic key just need to be plug when u launch logic, otherwize the project itself can be place and copy without any problem.now take care if u use some midiinstrument (like exs)that use sample, ucould also copy the exs library in ur external hd.depend if u use the factory sample it's not a problem,as far as u crash ur mac u'll find it back on ur dvd installer, otherwize u can find the exs folder there:
library/application support/logic/ then u v got sampler instrument and exs factory sample .u can both copy it in ur external hd.
that's the quicker way (for me as im organize).
now if u don't have 200 project and u wanna be sure to get everything backing up ,just open each project and save each one as project:
    file/save as project.
u click on copy all ,u choose ur external hd as the location and u click save.then it will pick up all the file u use (active or inactive) in ur arrangement and will copy it where u want..
    hope it's clear.not sure

  • How to move all of itunes onto external hard drive?

Right now, I have my music library connected to iTunes on an external hard drive. iTunes is installed on my desktop computer. What I'd like to do is have iTunes wholly on my external hard drive so I could move it back and forth between a laptop and my desktop. I edit a lot of tracks and to make sure the edits carry over, I'd just like it all on the external hard drive instead of downloading iTunes onto both devices. Also I add and delete different playlists with regularity.
Plus my iTunes runs sluggish (freezes for several seconds every time I click on something) and after a google search, one reason might be because my massive music collection is on a different drive, so I'm curious if keeping it all on the external would help.
I've searched around on how to do this, but all I find is how to move my library onto the external (its already there). I'm using Windows 7.

See Make a split library portable.
The larger the library and the more playlists you have the longer it takes to process each change in the database.

  • Saving all iphoto libraries to external harddrive

    Hi,
I have been using iphoto for a couple of years now and find it good but it slows down my computer alot. I would like to save all the pictures/libraries to an external harddrive, but need to know how to do this - i have searched iphoto help but cannot find anything. We have over 10,000 photographs and lots more added each day (on average 300+). Thanks to all in advance.

will it matter if the external harddrive is formated to ms-dos (fat32)?
Yes. iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos.
if so, is there a way through disk utility to partition and re-format external HD without losing previous stored information?
I've no idea. I would post that one on the Using Mac OS X forum for your version of the OS.

  • I want to move all files to an external drive--how?

I'm working on a Mac Pro. Using iMovie 9, I've been loading video from 10 years to archive and edit it all. I'm quickly using up remaining space on my primary hard drive (1 TB). I have a second drive (also 1 TB) with plenty of room. Can I move all the "Event" files (haven't started processing them yet) to this second drive? There doesn't seem to be any way to do this. Basically, I just want to move the whole iMovie operation to another drive and work from there. I've read some posts on this but the instructions don't make sense to me and I can't get anywhere.

    Here is the main post.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4141
The safest way is to follow the instructions in the post and move Events from within iMovie.
In your case, if you have not started ANY projects, you can move the events in the Finder and they will still work.
The safest way to do this would be to move a single Event using iMovie. This will create the right Events folder with the right name in the right place. Then drag the rest using the Finder. This will be a little quicker.
Restart iMovie and it should see them all and you are good to go.
Remember that the external drive must be formatted as MacOS Extended (journaled). FAT 32 drives would have to be reformatted before they can be used in iMovie.

  • I need to move my ITUNES to an external harddrive.  I have a few questions based on what I have read.

    1.  I have the old style organazation, the ITUNES Music.  From what I have read I need to go to "Library" and first "consolidate" and then "reorganize".  Is that correct and do I need to worry about the order.  Or should I just check both boxes at the same time?
    2.  I understand I can either move the media or move the entire ITUNES file.  It seems it is better to move the whole ITUNES file.  Is that correct.
    3.  My understanding that if the external drive is disconnected, the links to the music could be broken.  The best thing to do is:
         A.  Set all ipods to manual update.  This will keep ITUNES from starting every time the IPOD/IPHONE starts up.
         B.  Move the entire ITUNES file.  This way it will start with a message that the Library cannot be found and one can just cancel the startup.
    Correct?
    4.  One will have to "tell" ITUNES where the new Library resides.  To do this in Windows, hold down the "alt key" and start ITUNES.  Correct?
    5.  Before starting make sure ITUNES is updated to the latest version.
Is this pretty much the steps and have I missed anything.  I just want to make sure I am doing this correctly so that I don't screw up my links and have problems with ITUNES finding my music.
Thanks for any comments or feedback.

As far as I know there is no reason not to tick both boxes (if available) then click OK. Once the library has been "Rearranged" that option becomes redundant. Once the process is complete you can close iTunes, rename the folder iTunes Music as iTunes Media and start iTunes again. iTunes should automatically correct the media folder preference to match the new location but double check under Edit > Preferences > Advanced.
    2.  I understand I can either move the media or move the entire ITUNES file.  It seems it is better to move the whole ITUNES file.  Is that correct.
    Yes.

         A.  Set all ipods to manual update.  This will keep ITUNES from starting every time the IPOD/IPHONE starts up.
Not necessary, when your devices are connected you can however untick Open iTunes when this device is connected and under Edit > Preferences > Devices tick Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically.
       B.  Move the entire ITUNES file folder. This way it will start with a message that the Library cannot be found and one can just cancel the startup. (Then connect the drive and start as normal)
    Correct.
    4.  One will have to "tell" ITUNES where the new Library resides.  To do this in Windows, hold down the "alt key" and start ITUNES.
Press and hold down the SHIFT key as you start iTunes, keep holding until asked to choose or create a library. Click choose and browse to the folder you have moved/copied to your external drive.
    5.  Before starting make sure ITUNES is updated to the latest version.
No strictly necessary. The steps for moving an iTunes library have remained stable over many builds. Consolidate & rearrange as in step 1, either move or copy the entire iTunes folder to the new location, then connect with the shift-start iTunes method. Copy is slightly safer. Once you are happy it is all working you should ideally backup the new version of the library before deleting the original.

  • My Mac HD is full. what is the best way to move my photos onto an external harddrive

The Hard Drive on my iMac (OSX Mavericks 10.9.4, 21 1/2" Mid 2011) is full.
I want to transfer all my 22,000 photos onto an external HD.
However I would like to know if I can easily access them through iPhoto as I do now, by plugging in the external HD.
Is this likely to be more of a hassle than a solution?
What do others suggest I do to free up space?
    Thanks

Here are some general tips to keep your Mac's hard drive trim and slim as possible
You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your Mac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto or Aperture, both have its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you are an iMovie user, iMovie has its own individual Trash location that needs to be emptied, too!
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
To find other large files, download an app called Omni Disk Sweeper.
    http://www.omnigroup.com/more
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
    http://www.titanium.free.fr/downloadonyx.php
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.

  • Help needed to move 2 libraries onto an external harddrive.

Hi I have 2 iTunes libraries, one for my iPhone and one for my iPad. I organised my life this way so it was simple and I didn't have to faff around (besides I'm not too great at technical stuff!!). I am at a stage now where my iTunes (both libraries) has taken a huge amount of space and I want to move it onto an external hardrive. What's the best way to do this?
    Many thanks in advance

Two libraries is about the most complicated way to organize things.  It sounds like you have multiple copies of some if not all of the media in two or more locations which is what is taking up space.  Again, this is about the most complicated and least intelligent way of managing content on devices.
Simply create one library and manage the content on the devices by playlists.
Regardless, moving iTunes libraries is as simply as moving the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the current location to the new location.  Then while holding <SHIFT> launch iTunes.  When prompted, choose the option to select the library and point iTunes to the new location.

  • Confirm move of iPhoto library to external harddrive

I recently moved my iPhoto library to an external HD, and wanted to confirm that I can safely delete the old iPhoto library from my external disk. How do I check this? I also wanted to check that iPhoto is set up to store yet-to-be-imported-photos in the new location (on the HD). Under preferences in iPhoto, and then under the advanced tab, I have selected the box next to "copy photos to the iPhoto library". Is it really that simple?

Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and point it at the Library on the external. From that point on, this is the default Library, and the one that all pics will be imported to.
Test it thoroughly and when you're sure it's all okay, delete the one on the internal.
