Move an iTunes library between users on the same mac

How do I move an iTunes library between users on the same mac?
I accidentally created a secondary user on my mac some time ago when using the migration tool and am now going back and transferring all my files from the secondary to the admin user profile.
I wanted to know which itunes files/folders need to be copied over.
Is the process as simple as replacing the itunes folder on admin with the copied itunes folder from my secondary profile or do I need to delete the admin folder first and then copy the old folder over or do I delete the contents of the folder and replace with the copied contents?
I am using shared folders to move between users, but want to make sure that I am picking the right files to transfer.
Thanks in advance.

Assuming you have left iTunes to default settings so everything is still in the iTunes folder the way iTunes likes it to be, copy the whole of the iTunes folder to the new location.  If it is in the default directory (Home > Music) for iTunes the application will automatically use it there for the new account.  If you put it elsewhere you will have to start iTunes and immediately hold down the option key to direct it to the new location.
It is just possible you will have to change permissions.  If you encounter those issues read the part about changing permissions on the iTunes folder in: https://discussions.apple.com/message/11583914

  • Share individual photos (NOT a library) between users on the same Mac

I've read through all the photo sharing posts, and have not found an answer to this question:
There are multiple users on the same Mac, running Tiger and iPhoto 5. I want to be able to export certain photos to the Shared folder so that others on the Mac can import them into their iPhoto as separate copies on their own.
The Photo Sharing methods described in many other messages here would not be ideal, because the users with the original photos don't want to have to be logged in or have iPhoto open while others are on the computer. Also, they don't want their entire library to be looked through, just certain photos that they choose to export. The "Shared" folder seems like the answer to this, but so far it's been a huge letdown.
I've tried exporting the photos out to the Shared folder, but there are access errors when the other users try to import them into their iPhoto. Even if I modify the "Everyone" access rights to read & write on the files in the shared folder, it makes no difference. Is this the wrong approach? Would doing this through the Public folder make any difference?
Is there some simple way I'm missing here? It's difficult for me to imagine that something this basic is SO hard to do on the Mac.
    Thanks!

    Hi Scott,
The method I use is to put the images in a folder in my ~/Public/Drop Box folder. All members can access the images in there.

  • Sharing iPhoto Library between users on the same Mac

I recently switched to using iPhoto ('11) instead of Picasa on our iMac.  My wife and use the iMac but with each our own accounts.  When I first set it up, I put the library in our Shared folder on the Mac with the proper permissions, and both of us could access the library without any problems (as long as one of us remembered to quit iPhoto when we were done so the other can access the library).  But now, my wife no longer can open the library.  But not only that -- when launching iPhoto from her account, a warning display pops up saying the library cannot be accessed because it is locked or do not have permission to open.  When you click "OK," iPhoto simply quits.  No option to select a new library or create a new one.
I have no problems launching iPhoto under my account, and I've double-checked permissions on the Shared folder and the iPhoto library itself (we both have admin rights, anyway).
Has anyone experienced this scenario?  Any help would be appreciated!
    thanks!
    MG

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Use the option to check and repair Library permissions.

  • Sharing iTunes music between users on the same PC?

So I have nearly 9000 tracks in my iTunes folders under 'My Music'. Other users of this PC cannot see my files. What's the best way to transfer all my music to a shared area on the PC so that other users can play the music? Furthermore, how do I configure iTunes so that, going formard, it uses the shared area by default, in addition to users' own 'My Music' areas? I don't want to have to upload/download to my personal area everytime, then copy to the shared area? I guess what I'm asking is: "What's the most flexible way to configure iTunes for sharing on the same PC?". Please share your knowledge, experience & wisdom!

  • Transfering iTunes library between accounts in the same computer??

    Hi everyone
I use my MacBook both at home and in my office. I work in a small company, so everyone is very relaxed about security. I only have one account, but recently, while at the office I discovered someone browsing at some of my kids' pictures.
To avoid this,I decided to set up a "office" account. Everything went fine until I opened iTunes and found that I don't have any songs (they must have missed the memo about the new account!)
Is there an easy way to transfer those songs to my new account? I stress, this is the same computer we're talking about!!!
    Thanks

Do you mean they were viewing the pix on your computer? iTunes does not have pix for anyone to view. (This is the iTunes forum)
To avoid this,I decided to set up a "office" account.
You created a new account on the computer?
If you are talking about the computer, open the first accounts - > System prefs - Sharing.
    Under Services, turn OFF everything.
    Under FireWall, turn it ON.

Then hold Option and launch iTunes.
Select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder in /Users/Shared/ folder.

  • How do I share photos in iPhoto between users on the same mac

When one user account on my iMac takes photos with their iPhone they download to their iPhoto. I want them to be added to my iPhoto user account also and vice versa.

An iPhone can only stream one "my Photo Stream", and this is bound to one iCloud account, the account that is used  for the iPhone.
If you want to stream automatically from one iPhone to several persons using "My Photo Stream", all of you need to use the same Apple ID and the same iPhoto library, because My Photo Stream can only be tied to one library at a time.
With separate iPhoto libraries and IDs use shared photo streams, if your mac supports them, see:

  • HT4007 how can i share photos between users on the same mac?

    Dear All,
My wife and I use the same MacbookPro, but our own different login Accounts on the Mac, how can we share photos bewtwen these 2 accounts.
Say, I've downloaded some pics from my camera and would like to transfer to her login account.
Can I do it on the desktop level or can I use iPhoto to do this? I'd like to know how to do bothways, without having to duplicate the files(ie saving 2 copies of the same file on the computer)
Isn' there a 'New' feature on iPhoto / Aperture saying that it uses the same 'Unified' library or something ?
Can this feature help? but how to activate?
    Pls help.
    Thanks

Macs have a folder called "Public" for this purpose.  See this from Finder's help:
Share files with others using a drop box
To give a copy of a file to another user, you can copy the file to the person’s Drop Box.
HidePut a file in the Drop Box of another user on your Mac
Open the user’s Public folder (in their home folder in the Users folder on your hard disk).
Hold down the Option key and drag the file to the Drop Box in the user’s Public folder.
Click the desktop to make sure you’re in the Finder, and then choose Go > Computer.
Double-click the icon for your computer’s internal disk (usually named Macintosh HD) to open its folder.
Open the Users folder, and then open the folder for the person to whom you’re giving a file.
Open the user’s Public folder, and then drag the file to the Drop Box. To keep a copy of the file for your own use, hold down the Option key while you drag.
Even though you can put items in another user’s Drop Box, you can’t open any Drop Box except your own.

  • How can I sync the same iTunes 11 library between 2 users on the same Mac?

With iTunes 10 I was able to have one main iTunes library under one user and have a second user (on the same Mac) access it by putting an alias of the iTunes Libray.itl and iTunes Music Library.xml files in the second user's iTunes folder.  This ensured that the library remained synced regardless of which user added or made changes to it.  With iTunes 11, I am no longer able to do this.  If I try I get the following error pop up:  'The iTunes application could not be opened.  An unknown error occured (13014)'.  If I delete the aliases in the second user's account the error message goes away but nothing shows up in the main iTunes window.
I've been able to at least access the iTunes library (which is stored on an external drive) with the second user by changing the iTunes media folder location in advanced preferences to the main iTunes library and then selecting file/add to library and selecting the iTunes media file which (eventually) pulls up all the song/movie/apps etc. information.  However, the 2 libraries do not remain synced (i.e. a change in one does not show up in the other).
Anyone know of a way to get one library to remain synced between 2 user accounts on the same machine with iTunes 11 or am I going to be forced to delete and recreate the second user's iTunes info frequently to 'catch up' with the original?
    Any help would be appreciated.

I'm surprised the alias method worked, and it certainly isn't the prescribed method.

    Hello Whigged-out,
It sounds like you would like to share one library between two different users on your iMac.  I found an article with steps you can take to accomplish this:

  • How do i share my itunes library with other users on the same mac

I'm trying to share my itunes library with other users on the same mac.  I have tried moving my library to a public folder but when the other user logs in they can't see it in the public folder?

Presuming you moved the entire iTunes folder to the shared folder the other users need to start their iTunes while holding down the option/alt key and select the iTunes Library.itl file in the shared folder.  Only once should be necessary.  Note that any changes anybody makes will be seen by everybody, so you have to trust each other a lot.
If all you moved are media files each user will have to add those files to their iTunes library.

  • Is there a way I can move movies from one itunes library to another on the same computer?

Is there a way I can move movies from one itunes library to another on the same computer?

Locate them in the Windows Explorer, move or copy those files as you would any other, and drag them into the open iTunes window when the second library is loaded. If you're using two iTunes libraries on one user account, you only need to locate the files; otherwise, they need to be put in a shared area.
