Move an X41 image to a smaller drive

Hi,
I have two X41's and one of them needs to be reimaged but the factory preload seems to be corrupt.  I do have a good image on the 2nd one but the problem is the broken one has a smaller drive than the first.  I've tried to use Ghost to transfer the image over but since it is a larger drive I can do a sector copy which is what I think is needed to preserve the pre-load area.
Is there a way I can use ghost to do this?  Is there a better way?
Thanks!
Tom

Acronis TrueImage handles moving drive images to differently sized drives well for me. I've also known it to preserve the preload, but as we all know that is tricky business with third-party utilities.

  • Can I move XP install image or XP Boot drive from windows PC to Mac Pro?

I have a computer running Windows XP and I have the OEM disc for reinstallation. I also have an image of a clean install of XP I can use to restore my OS. I plan to remove the hard drives from my Windows XP PC and never use that machine again because I have had nightmare after nightmare with some hardware and the vendor.
Can I use what I already have and set this up in a Mac Pro to use it under bootcamp or do I have to buy a new copy of XP, reformat the hard drives for the Mac and start all over? I have several programs that I need to run on Windows. Any suggestions on how to make the tranistion from a failing XP PC over to the Mac world would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
is the OEM XP disc a 'full WIndows disc' or some sort of recovery disc that came with the PC you have ?
If it came with the PC you have, chances are that it will only work with that specific PC (some Dell and HP do this).
When you have cleared this licensing question, you might have a good chance doing what you wnat by using this Guide: http://www.lockergnome.com/it/2007/05/25/using-sysprep-to-create-a-windows-xp-im age-part-i/

  • Best way to move OS X image to larger hard drive?

I'm thinking of moving my OS X install from the original Macbook Pro 120 GB hard drive to a larger replacement hard drive. What's the best way to do this? Do I need imaging software and an external hard drive?

does it need to be formatted a certain way?
For a MacBook Pro, it will need to be partitioned with the GUID partition format or you won't be able to boot from it. Format in the standard Mac OS X Extended (Journaled).
Cloning is not the same as creating a single image file, right>
Correct, cloning is not the same as creating an image. You could, if you wanted, use CCC or Disk Utility to create a disk image of your current HD on the external hard drive, but since you still have to be able to boot from the external drive to be able to restore the disk image to the new internal drive, it's just an extra step over just cloning your current hard drive to the external since you'd have to install Mac OS X on the external drive so you could boot from it. But if you already have an external drive set up to be bootable and don't want to erase it (which you would do by cloning to it), then creating a disk image of your current internal drive, booting from the external drive, and then using Disk Utility to restore the image to the new internal hard drive is an option.
    Regards.

How do I import images from my hard drive without losing resolution? My original files after import are significantly smaller. What should I do?

Hi Keith, and all others chiming in, I do have the correct option checked in advanced settings telling iPhoto to copy the images into the library. What is a refernced library? Perhaps this is where I am getting confused. I exported my entire photo library from an old iMac5 to my external hard drive, from there I attempted to import the entire library to my new iMac. Am I overlooking an obvious and easy way to import from the hard drive to the new iMac--I dragged the entire photo pholder from the hard drive to the open window of iPhoto on the new computer. Now, I only get preview file sizes in iPhoto, unless I have my external drive open. Perhaps I need to import the original images from the hard drive in a different way...?! (This is making me feel pretty stupid.)

  • How do i move photos and catalog to a new drive and have lightroom make the same move

I am trying to move all my photos to a new drive with different drive letter.  I know I can do a backup and restore inside PSE13 to perform that.  However, I also have Lightroom 5 on the current setup.  How would I now use the new location for the photos in lightroom if they are already moved by PSE?
    Hope this makes sense!

I don't recommend the Time Machine or Migation Assistent approach. The first tneds to be very slow and the second often carries baggage that is probably best not transferred to a new computer.
Lightroom doesn't use activation, therefore, can be installed on your new Mac without having first removed it fom the old. Your images and catalogs can be copied across to the new Mac using an a portable disk drive as the transfer medium. Typically, on Mac computers, the catalog and image files are stored in the Pictures folder. If this is where you have them then then copy them to the same location on the new Mac. Once copied you can open the catalog folder then double click on the .lrcat file to launch Lightroom.

  • Even after resets get "The backup disk image "/Volumes/FreeAgent GoFlex Drive/MacBeth (2) 1.sparsebundle" could not be created (error 22)."

HELP!  "The backup disk image “/Volumes/FreeAgent GoFlex Drive/MacBeth (2) 1.sparsebundle” could not be created (error 22)."
TC estimates over 750GB for full backup.
Late 2010 MBA is connected wirelessly to
802.11n (1st gen) TC that is connected via ethernet hub built into house to motorola router using charter.com for internet.
I have had same problem for over 150 days and multiple reboots, restarts in proper order, firmware updates, unplugs with 5min plus gaps, bypassing the tc and using external 500gb WD mybook via usb to time capsule, replacement of the WD mybook to new 2TB Free Agent GoFlex drive, etc, etc, etc!  Note: I originally named my MBA hard drive MacBeth, but at some point months ago, it said backup already existed and system automatically created MacBeth (2), worked for a while, then stopped again, despite trying nearly daily.
I gave up and started using Carbon Copy Clone daily for just the 128gb on internal SSD of my late 2011 11" MacBook Air, but need to get past these time capsule errors to back up the external disk!  Due to lack of space in MBA, I had long ago transferred both itunes and iphoto and all imovie/fcpx files to a 1tb external disk (WD Passport) that I keep in my bag with MBA.  It is partitioned with 150gb for cloning the MBA, and over 750gb for media/itunes/iphoto/etc.
Also, I have endured months of "your hard drive is full" messages and system lockups, applying the solution given to me by genious bar (deleting all aol.com outboxes/recovered messages/spam/trash under library/mail/V2/Mailboxes folders, empty trash, restart....watch recovered hard drive space mysteriously shrink next couple days to zero.....repeat)
Due to lack of space, I had not been able to do javascript and other system updates.  Yesterday, I noticed even safari bookmark bar had mysteriously emptied (not disappeared, I can hide and show the space where the bar used to be - it is just blank area with no data except for eyelass-book-topsites icons), so I transferred a few large quicktime movie files recorded with isight camera to the external disk, and freed up 20 gbs for the first time!
This got my hopes up yesterday because after I completed all system/software updates, suddenly the bookmark bar showed up and I was able to start the time capsule backup! It took overnight preparing for backup, but finally started and progressed to 12gb of the 100gb+ needed (i guess the update where it left off months ago for the estimated 750gb for the full backup?), then I put system to sleep and took it with me (thus leaving the wireless time capsule network as I do daily fully expecting it to continue when I returned home in the evening.)  But alas, upon return, back to the "Time Machine could not complete backup, The backup disk image ".....sparsebundle" could not be created (error 22)"  Ugh!  More reboots, unplugs, 5min gaps....still Ugh!
So the problem continues...please help!  Here are my settings:
    About this mac:
    Mac OS X V. 10.7.5
    processor 1.6 ghz intel core 2 duo, memory 4 4g 1067 MHz DDR3
    software up to date!
    Airport Utility:
    V 6.2 (620.33)
both internet globe and TC show green dots in graphic, however internet occasionally shows yellow then goes to green, but still gets error 22.  Suddenly TC showed explanation mark and says lost connection and asked if I wanted to 'forget', gave same errors, then mysteriously went back to green, but still got error 22!.
    Internet:
connection: connected, displays router address, 2 dns server, and domain name: charter.com
    Time Capsule:
shows network, ip address, serial number, version 7.6.3, status: (green dot) Setup over WAN,
wireless clients: phones, macbooks (including this MBA), printers, wii
If you need other settings to help me, just ask!  I have read a few of the other solutions in forums, but trying not to erase disks, especially since it worked for a minute yesterday!

To step sideways.. why not just use CCC to backup the 750GB of the hard disk to the TC.
You need to understand this is going to be a super slow process and each time you stop it.. it is going to give issues. CCC will at least do a more reliable job of it than TM.
I would also say.. this is going to be tough without ethernet. You need to understand the backup speed over wireless can be 10GB per hour.. that makes 75hrs to backup the disk. The air needs to run non-stop doing that.. without you touching it.
I would get another external drive.. plug that into the MBA and if you really want to use TM.. make a backup one to the other.. but CCC will again do a better job and work faster. It will be much faster than over wireless.
I am trying to think of ways around the issue of just speed.. but plainly you have lots of other issues.. being the simple unreliablity of the TM to identify the TC.
If you want to make this work.. give yourself a weekend.
Load 5.6 utility into the MBA..
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Take the TC back to 7.5.2 firmware. It is a really old version and latest firmware does it no good at all.
Wipe its hard disk using erase and start over.. give it new names for everything.
    So call it TC
Set the wireless to 5ghz and name it TC5ghz
Use WPA2 Personal security. Use a 10 character passkey non dictionary.
At 5ghz you should get 2x the speed as at 2.4ghz but the air will need to be right next to the TC..
(alternatively buy the USB to ethernet cord apple have available.. it is $30 in the apple store and do it over pseudoethernet. http://store.apple.com/au/product/MC704ZM/A/apple-usb-ethernet-adapter That is the wrong store but you get the idea. )
WIth a fully clean system.. now do a full reset of TM.
    See A4 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Direct the TM to back to the TC.. and make sure the external hard disk is not excluded.
Of course the TC has to be 1TB version to fit that much data.. goes without saying right.
Even over pseudo - ethernet this will take many hours.. and you basically have to leave it to work.. do not touch it.. make sure the MBA cannot sleep though.. turn off sleep.. beforehand.

  • How do i move my itunes library to a different drive

i underestimated the space i needed for my itunes library. at the time, i thought 75gb is more than enought for my 60gb ipod, then the videos and movies came along. although i cannot put them on my 4th gen ipod, but i did downloaded a bunch of free tv shows and video podcasts.
i thought i was simply gonna delete some already-viewed files as i push the limit, but then the recycle bin on my ipod specific drive screwed up. i can no longer delete anything off that drive. since the partition i had earlier was kind small for my ipod drive, i think i want to reformat the drive to a different partition.
of course, i need to move my itunes library first. can someone please teach me how to move my itunes library to a different drive? thank you very much.

When I added a second drive internal drive I used this guide: Moving your iTunes Music Folder

  • How do I backup a large music library to two smaller drives?

Does anyone know if it is possible to split a library in half, when backing up? I have an external 1000 gig lacie drive that is the home of my itunes media folder location. I also have two smaller lacie drives that put together could have enough space to cover the amount of music that is on the large lacie.
The total size of the library is now 397 gigs, and since I've been reimporting many favorite albums in the full aiff form, the library is growing. But since the library is too big now for any one backup drive I'm getting nervous. The smaller drives are 250 and 175 gig drives, and up until now have been the place where I would double backup to, when the library was much smaller,[ only aac files ].
So how do I send part of the library to one drive and the rest to another???

Thanks J.G. ... I checked out all these fixes, and none address my issue. I am not looking to change the location of the library to be able to play specific genres, or different kinds of files [movies] on different drives. I am happy that all my files are stored and played from one place.
I am only [ and, perhaps it is a too big only..] looking for a way to portion out the library [ one portion that would fill the smaller drive and the other portion that would correspond with the size of the other external drive] to utilize the drives that I already own, as a place of backup. I know that the easiest way to fix the problem would be to buy another large drive similar in size to the main one I am now using to store my music.
Even perhaps one that has double the size and, an automatic mirroring function, like the western digital two terrabite model.
But, failing that option, I am still looking for a cheaper work around!

  • How do I merge external drive images to desk top drive within the same master catalog?

I have about 900 raw files on an external drive. I edited those files using my master catalog using a laptop while still travelling. When I got home, I copied the master catalog from the external drive to the desk top, then opened the master catalog on my desktop. I can see the edited images on the external drive. So far so good.
I want to copy (add) the edited images to my desk top. I tried to export the images as a new catalog and then import it into the desire location on my desktop drive. However, LR5 does not allow that. I get this message: "There is nothing new in the catalog you have selected. All of the catalog's photos are up to date in this catalog." Yes, but the edited  images are not on my desktop.....
I also tried to Import from the external drive and then Copy the files to the desktop, but then I lose all of the work done in the develop module and the keywords.
I watched Kost's LR 3 video on merging catalogs, but she dodges the question of how to deal with this issue since the "merge" is within the same catalog.
    I'm using LR5 with Windows 7.
Any suggestions would be immensely appreciated as I've spent hours trying to resolve this problem.

Okay, so I would copy (not move) the folders/photos to the internal HD, keeping them in the same folder hierarchy as they are in now on the external HD. Yes, of course the drive name will be different, but other than that the folder path and file name should be the same.
Then, open the LR catalog that indexes the files and Update Folder Location (details are here: http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm, scroll down to the "Update Folder Location" section)
Then, once that is complete and everything is working in your LR catalog, with no question marks on the photos or folders, optionally delete the photos on the external HD.

  • How to move ALL my images to a new SSD in laptop

    Howdy,
I am adding a new SSD to my laptop (ran out of room) and want to move ALL my images (25,000) from my current Drive C to the new Drive D on my Alienware laptop.  How do I do "adjust" LR4 so that it sees the images on the D Drive versus the C Drive?  I can't find an answer and I do NOT want to make a mistake here to say the least

  • I just purchased an external disk drive to store my pictures.  I want to keep the last 12 months of pictures on my iMac and move the rest to the new external drive.  As new pictures are added I want them to be put on the iMac internal drive.  How?

I just purchased an external disk drive to store my growing number of pictures.  I want to keep the last 12 months of pictures on my iMac and move the remaining pictures to the new external drive.  As I take more pictures I want them to be put on the iMac internal drive.  Every 3 to 6 months I would then move some additional pictures to the external drive.  I am nuervous about losing any of the pictures and want to make sure I follow the proper procedure.  What is the right way to handle this?
    Thanks.

Here's one way to do what you want:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using  iPhoto Library Manager

  • Scanning with Image Capture eating hard drive space

This has been a reoccuring problem for me. If I scan around 30mb of images to an external drive, my hard disk ends up with a full message. I end up having to use a cashe cleaner to free the space up again. I've figured out that with the 8 GB of  free space on my internal disk, if I scan around 7-8 images (around 15mb) it says I have filled the disk.
I'd appreciate any help I can get on this. It's a pain in the butt to have to keep clearing space only to have it filled again one image later.

my guess is that you need at least 3 times as much free space on your internal drive as you have now. OS X needs temporary space on that drive for every file move copy, scan, etc it does. you'll find recommendations of 10-20 percent of drive total space here.

  • MDT Image Deployment Using Flash Drive

    Hi,
In my environment i am using MDT 2010 image deployment process to deploy Windows XP and Windows 7 OS images,
As image deployment is foccussed on multiple remote locations we have planned to move with USB Flash drive (Pen Drive) for image deployment,
The problem occurs here in normal system through diskpart utility i can able to get all the disks including my flash drive but in win pe mode i am unable to get my flash drive listed in diskpart utility.
so the image deployment process hangs on to the microsoft solution accelerator screen i am unable to predict the actual reason but i can predict this can happen because of mass storage driver problems.
I tried the same using USB Hard Disk and succeded with the deployment and i am unable to guess what makes difference between USB Hard disk and USB Flash Drive.
Can you just help me out on this to close the problem ASAP..
So that i can proceed with my roll out activities.
    Thanks in advance,
    Siva

    Hi,
At last the image deployment using flash drive works for me.
    I attempted the following steps,
First i converted the flsh drive to bootable flash drive using diskpart utility,This can be done in Windows 7 Operating system only.
navigate to cmd and type Diskpart, and enter the below commands,
    List disk
    Select Disk no
    create partition primary
    select partition no
    active
    format fs=ntfs
    Assign
    Exit
Upon completition,Insert windows 7 DVD to the system and do the following
Navigate to DVD Drive in my case it is G: and change directory to boot
    G:cd boot
    G:\Boot>Bootsect.exe /nt60 I: where I: is my flash drive
Then copy the contents to the Usb flash drive and change the first boot device of the target system to local hard disk and deploy the image
while in Win pe mode use disk part utility to check whether your disk got detected.
If everything is ok then it will work.
    Thanks for your valuable time.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Siva

  • Easiest way to copy X220 Lenovo image to a mSATA drive

What is the easiest way to copy the Lenovo image to a mSATA drive so that my X220 will boot from the device?
Should I just burn recovery discs, install the mSATA while leaving the 2.5" port empty, and run the recovery process?   I'm only getting a 32GB mSATA drive so maybe copying an image may not work unless the space required is signifcantly less than 32GB for Win 7 64 bit.
    Thanks in advance.
Moderator edit: Matched subject to content.

    Thanks Sveintore!
I may have to do a clean install of Windows 7 64-bit and then just add on some necessary or nice to have Thinkpad applications.
The recovery disc will still be on the origianl 2.5" 320GB I will be reattaching once I get the smaller mSATA SSD so I can do away with that.
