Move Apple Loops to External Drive?

hello
i was looking at all the files on my drive, and i noticed that so much space is taken up by the apple loop .caf files. Is there a way to move these to a folder on my external drive but still have logic know where to find them?
thanks

This is what I did to move the 30+gb of samples that come with logic:
1. On your external hard drive, create 2 folders: Garage Band Samples, Logic Samples.
2. Goto MacIntosh HD> Library> Application Support> Garage Band> Instrument Library> Sampler> Sampler Files. Take the entire folder for "Sample Files", and copy this to the "Garage Band Samples" folder on your external drive.
3. Goto MacIntosh HD> Library> Application Support> Logic> EXS Samples. Take the entire folder for "EXS Samples", and copy this to the "Logic Samples" folder on your external drive.
4. Open up 2 windows on your screen, one window of the external drive with the Garage Band Sample window, and one of your laptop's garage band sampler files. These windows should contain the exact same folders, starting with the "2-Step Remix and ending with "Xylophone".
5. Here comes the extemely tedious part. You'll do the following, for every folder here... For Example....
1. Under the folder on the external drive, select every .aif file in the "2-step Remix" folder and make an alias' of them.
2. Under the folder on the Macintosh HD, trash all the .aif files in the "2-step Remix" folder.
3. Under the folder on the external drive, drag every alias file into the "2-Step Remix" folder on the Macintosh HD.
4. This is the process you need to follow for every folder under the Garage Band and Logic samples folders......yes it is tedious.....

  • Problems with indexing and Apple Loops on External Drive

Ok, so I've recently moved my entire "Apple Loops" folder to an external drive and created an alias pointing back the "Audio" folder where the apple loops folder used to reside. The problem is when I bring up the loop browser, it's not finding the loops. Do I need to move the Apple Loops Index to the external hard drive as well? I assumed by creating an alias, it would just go to my external drive.

Someone had said that it's better to use the alias for the apple loops since Logic will always go to where it expects the loops to be first. Which I'm assuming would be faster. But, if it truly doesn't matter and I should just drop all my apple loop folders one by one from my external hard drive, then I"ll do that. Anyone heard about what's faster....alias Vs. external HD direct path?

  • Help me move my loops to external drive

I want to move my loops to an external drive to free up space on my laptop drive. Can someone offer a clear, understandable tutorial on how to do this?
I've got my head spinning after spending the last couple days trying to figure this out, as I keep getting widely different responses, plus I've heard that jampack4 puts the loops into a different folder than earlier jampacks.
Is there a simple, understandable way to do this? I didn't think it would be so confusing to just move a folder, but which folder or folders is it.
    Thanks,

  • Broken in Logic 9?: Reindex loops from external drive

Adding loops from an external drive in Logic 9 does not seem to work any longer. It used to work great in L8. Anyone have similar experiences? Know any work arounds? Is it a bug? If it's a bug I'll file it with Apple.
Previously in Logic 8 it was easy to reindex loops on an external drive:
    (1) Delete the loop indexes from root/Library/Audio/Apple Loops Index
    (2) Use Finder to locate the loops on the external
    (3) Drag the loop folders into the L8 media browser.
    (4) L8 asks if you want to copy the loops or use them from their present location. Select present location intsead of copy locally.
    (5) L8 takes 5-20 minutes to build index of loops from external drive
I have tried this procedure several times in L9 without success. Instead I get the following:
    (1) Delete the loop indexes from root/Library/Audio/Apple Loops
    (2) Use Finder to locate the loops on the external
    (3) Drag the loop folders into the L8 media browser.
    (4) L9 ask for my admin password.
    (5) Enter my password
    (6) I'm NOT asked if I want to copy loops locally or use them in their present location. Instead a reindex progress dialog comes up for 2 seconds then goes away.
    (7) In the end nothing happened. No loops copied, indexed, or anything
There is only one way I managed to get loops into L9 but it is exactly what I'm NOT looking for:
    (1) In the folder with all my loops spotlight search ".CAF" (In this case want to reindex Apple content which is all CAF)
    (2) Make sure to click "show more" at the bottom of the search results.
    (3) Drag the search results to the loop browser.
    (4) L9 indexes them all right, AND also copies them to my user library! All 30 GBs worth. Definitely not what I want.
In the end, I had to reinstall the Loops from the DVDs and specify an external location for them. (This whole mess got started when I tried to move the GarageBand and iLife loops to an external drive. The installer does not let you specify a location for them.)
Just so you know I've done some homework:
I've scoured other Logic forums and found these relevant threads that in the end did not solve the issue. They mostly seem to refer to Logic 8 which does not have this issue.

I just installed LP9 and all my loops and samples are on external drives. The drag and drop onto the browser method worked fine and I WAS given the option to move the files or not. The only exception to the above is Ultrabeat samples. They seem to want to be on the System drive.

  • Running my .mp4 Movie files from an External Drive

I have quite a few familiy movies etc that I've put together using FCP and I've sent these to itunes as .mp4 files which I then playon our TV through the apple TV module.
However I'd really like to be able to store these home movies on an external drive to save my HD space and also keep them safe.
Is it possible to trasfer all of these .mp4 files in my itunes movies folder onto an external drive and run them from there on my apple TV?
    Thanks,
    Steve

No, Michael Allbritton's (MA) method just copies the files you have selected to consolidate to the location you have temporarily designated in preferences.  MA didn't mean "library" as being the library file (library.itl) but the "collection".  Your files would still all be managed from the same iTunes library file on your internal drive but the movie files you selected to consolidate would now be referenced to their new location on the external drive.
Note the difference between these two methods:
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
do not confuse moving your whole folder and library with moving just media files as in
iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
Moving your movies will only apply to your current collection.  If you add movies in the future you will need to make sure they are on the external drive, then hold down the option key while dragging the file to iTunes to tell iTunes to not copy it to your internal drive (which has been re-set as the location for your media folder after the move directions).

  • Imovie 10: how to move the (movie) library to an external drive

    Hi all,
using imovie '11 it wasn't any problem to move the (movie) library to an external drive following these instrcutions: <http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2289?viewlocale=en_US>. After updating to mavericks and imovie 10 I can't find the hard drive icon to pull down the drive list any more.
Maybe I missed something very obvious but would be very happy for any suggestion.
    Thanks in advance,
    best regards,
    Stephan

Your events and projects now reside in an file or files  with extension .imovielibrary.    You can create a new library wherever you want from within iMovie and drag and drop events into it from an exisitng library.  If you want to move the complete library, select the library then go File - Consolidate Project Media.  This ensures the library is self-contained and doesn't have any links to external media which could break when it is moved.  You can then move the library to the external HD using the Finder.  When you restart iMovie you will have to select  File - Open Library - Other and navigate to its new location.
There are a lot of changes in imovie 10 and its really necessary to study the help file (http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov3fa25bae7)

That is the only logical conclusion. There is an easy solution. On the Mac app store download a free app called smartconverter. It is free. You just drag and drop file into app and it will convert to any file u want. I hope that foxes your issue

  • Need to move pictures to an external drive.

can anyone advise me on setting a partion to an extrnal drive? I want to move pictures permantly to external drive so i can make room on my macbook. When I export pictures from iphoto (4,000 pictures), the folder on the extrnal drive has 798 mb. What's up? What am I doing wrong?
Im running 10.6.8 and increased memory to maximium.Macbook  2.16 GHz intel Core 2 Duo

I am confused by your post. Have you already done this and want to know why the folder is 798 mb, or are you asking for advice on how to partition the drive so you can move the pics? If you plan to partition you must do it before you move the Library.

  • Can't move a project to external drive. Followed Apple's help instructions. Is it because I partitioned the external drive?

When I drag the project to the external drive in the event library, it does not lock on. Thus, options for Move Project or Move Project and Events don't show up.The WD external drive has been formatted correctly. It has 2 partitions, one for Time Machine, one for saving files and folders.

You don't say if you are using iMovie 11.  The only way to move a project is to have '11.
And then you have to save it as an Archive.  You can move the archive.  You can also save it as a disk image but that will be a completed document.
If there is no"Archive Project"  in your file menu, you are out of luck.
The issue here is that the iMovie 11 Help files are incorrect (see below).
It is actually very simple to move a project and all its associated components to an external drive.
You have to do it however in the Project Library and not mix it with the Event Library as the help files suggest.
Type in External Drive into iMovie Help and read through the results.

  • Move Logic 9 to External Drive for Multiple Computers

I'm looking for advice on moving ALL my Logic-9 data & settings & plugins to an external HDD, so I can seamlessly move between two different computers: a 2010 MBP with OSx10.6.8 + Logic 9.1.7 and a MacPro with OSx10.8.5 + Logic 9.1.8 (different Logic versions because different OSx’s?). I researched and learned plenty but found nothing consolidated into one thread. Blending various --sometimes contradictory-- instructions, I moved a lot & all works so far, but I wonder if I’ve moved too much or not enough. I took 8+ hours (very methodically) to get this to work, but had I found this already written-up, I would have taken only a couple hours. I hope my experience might help others (if I’m over-posting I apologize).
Both computers are running Logic 9, with software instruments: Addictive Drums 1.5.2, Kontakt 5.0.1 + Mojo Horns, and Bass Station 1.6.0. , as well as the plugin effects: iZotope Nectar  1.1.4, Ozone 5.0.4., Insight 1.02, Alloy 2.0.2, Focusrite Plugin Suite, Midnight Plugin Suite. Before starting the move I opened Logic on each computer and did the “Download Additional Content” to download everything available; funny thing is… the laptop ended up with 102 [Apple Loops or Garageband?] files while the desktop came out with 104. Also, I had to unhide my “User/Library” folder which Mountain Lion hides, using one of the methods described in other postings.
    Here’s a step-by-step of what I did so far:
    1) Save every project’s assets (audio, etc) within its project folder.
    2) Copy the “EXS Factory Samples” folder from  Laptop HD/Library/Application Support/Logic/  to the ExternalHDD. I created a symlink of this folder, and put the symlink back in the original Laptop HD/Library/Application Support/Logic/  folder, so Logic will be pointed to the ExternalHDD. I renamed the original folder in the laptop to “EXS Factory Samples MOVED” rather than deleting it (until I’m sure it’s totally safe). I renamed the “EXS Factory Samples symlink” to “EXS Factory Samples” so Logic will think it is the original folder. I followed this same symlink-&-rename method for all the rest of my transfers that followed. 3) Move the “Sampler Files” folder from  Laptop HD/Library/Application Support/Garageband/Instrument Library/Sampler ,  to ExternalHDD.
    4) Transfer “Logic” folder with all my Logic projects from Laptop HD/Users/My User-Home/Music/  to ExternalHDD.
    5) Transfer “iZotope” folder from Laptop HD/Users/My User-Home /Documents/  to ExternalHDD (this has all my presets for Alloy & Ozone), transfer “iZotope Nectar” from the same location. I also transferred the folder where I kept all my audio/midi interface & controller settings.
    6) Transfer “Apple Loops” folder, “Presets” folder, and “MIDI Configurations” from  Laptop HD/Users/My User-Home /Documents/Audio/  to ExternalHDD.  Remember that all these are done using the same symlink-rename method for safety purposes.
    7) I was afraid there may be bad consequences to transferring the entire “Logic” folder from Laptop HD/Users/My User-Home /Library/Application Support/ , so I instead transferred INDIVIDUALLY each settings-folder within Laptop HD/Users/My User-Home /Library/ Application Support/Logic/  (“Channel Strip Settings”, “Chord Grids”, “Data Management Settings”, “Key Commands”, “Plug-in Settings”, “Project Templates”, “Sampler Instruments”, “Temp”, “Undo”).  BTW, some of these folders did not exist on the desktop computer yet.
8)Now connect the ExternalHDD to the desktop computer and copy all the same symlinks that  were created that ExternalHDD, and paste them each into their respective places on the desktop computer. Use the same symlink-rename method just-in-case. In some cases I had to create folders that did not yet exist.
    9) Trash the no-longer-necessary symlinks that are still on the ExternalHDD.
Although I consolidated lots for this write-up, DO ALL THESE STEP-BY-STEP,  TESTING THAT EVERYTHING WORKS AT EACH STEP.
Question: Should I also transfer some other folders from [Laptop HD/Users/My User-Home /Library/ Application Support/]? In there lie more folders called Addictive Drums, iZotope, Focusrite-SaffirePro24DSP, Native Instruments, Novation, "LogicLoopmasters sample library", etc. that I wonder about, because the appear to include settings files as well as data files. Perhaps just copy paste some of these settings from one computer to the other? All suggestions & experiences appreciated!

    Hello Chris Jones,
I just found this and I'm trying to figure it out so your post is an excellent starting point, thank you! Since you posted this in Feb are there any things you would change or you found out after doing it? And how is everything running?
As a data point, I just added a SSD as the startup drive to an older mac pro (1,1) which is only used for Logic Pro and the speed now is amazing. Now I want to see if I can off-load the same things you have dealt with. Any additional insight will be greatly appreciated and thanks again for taking to time to document it.

  • Move Support Files to external drive?

anyone know if i'll screw up dvd studio pro if i move the support files for it to an external drive?

i was succesfull in moving the apple loops to an external drive and relinking them in soundtrack pro - i'd like to do the same for dvd studio pro to free up another 8 gigs on my laptop.
    thanks for any input.

You can just move them. I do it all the time (the templates usually have to get moved for the same reasons - laptop space )
The application stills runs - you can set the destination in DVD SP for the assets (destination/pallette elements) or use an alias

  • Easiest Way to Move Media from One External Drive to Another?

My MacBook Pro only has a 500GB hard drive and I currently have all my movies on a 1TB external hard drive.  Everything works fine through iTunes, but now since the 1TB is maxed out, I'd like to use my new 2TB external hard drive going forward.  I understand that I need to re-route where iTunes finds the movies, but what is the easiest way to make the conversion from the 1TB to the 2TB?
I have copied all movies from the 1TB to the 2TB.  Is the only thing left to do is re-route the location to the 2TB?  Or do I need to drag and drop all movies into iTunes (they're all already in there)?  Just didn't know if I needed to add them into iTunes again so they know to point to the 2TB drive. (sorry if I didn't explain that good!)
Thanks in advance for your help!

Thanks Limnos!  Really appreciate the help!
    To clarify:
    - I currently have only movies on the external 1TB drive (which iTunes points too).  The downside is that I ALWAYS have to have my external drive plugged in, in order to play on Apple TV (or view on MacBook).  I have appx. over 500GBs of movies on my external 1TB.
    - All music (appx. 200GBs) is currently on my internal hard disk, but with a 500GB internal hard drive, that's going to fill up quickly (just so you know - I already have about 125GBs of pics in iPhoto AND work in Photoshop regularly so PSDs lessen my internal 500GB space quickly).
Eventhough I HATE having to keep an external drive plugged into my MacBook, I'm just going to have to suck it up and get used to it so I will have more space and my MacBook will run faster.
With that in mind, I was thinking about moving my music (200GBs) onto my 2TB external drive (along with the movies).  So that would leave roughly the photos and Photoshop files (and random other things that are small in size) on my internal drive.
I could start all over and delete all movies that are in iTunes (the application - not the folders) and then drag and drop them into iTunes from the new 2TB, but I wasn't sure all the metadata (really the cover artwork) would be attached when I did that?  Going that route really doesn't bother me since I've already copied all movies files from my 1TB to my 2TB.  Basically, I would be starting over from scratch as if the old 1TB never existed.
Trying to run this through my mind and come up with the best/easiest way.  What I don't want to do is try and find cover artwork for the almost 300 movies I have (and all the cover artwork for the CDs I have too if I decide to keep my music on the 2TB external drive).
Hope that helps and makes sense?  Thanks again!

  • How do I move itunes to an external drive and use from there

Mid July 2010 Mini running 10.9.4, 320 gig HD, about 95 gigs left on drive and I need to add bootcamp/windows7 which will need about 90 gigs, maybe a little less for what I need to do with win7. Next problem will be figuring out how to make bootcamp work. Like how do I make a ISO out of a dmg? That's for another post. Excuse me.
What do I move to an external drive? The media folder? Do I move iTunes? Seems to me iTunes needs to be on the MacHD and it pulls media from the drive to be rendered or played. Do I drag and drop? From where? Why doesn't Apple have simple easy to understand certified answers to issues ordinary people have? Something about once "it" is moved, do you restart and then I think hold control down while starting iTunes? What about iTunes Match? Should that be off? If it is off during the change over and then after restating Match will it matter that now the media is all in a different location? Absolutely at a loss.
Can someone please shed light on this?
    thanks,
    tom

Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder.
If this is to a new computer and you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.

  • Want to move photo library to external drive

I want to move the '08 iphoto library to an external drive, as I am running out of space on the iMac. However I have numerous picture folders (2007, 2006, etc) within my 'pictures' folder in addition to the iphoto library. The photos from these folders all appear in iphoto.
My question: Do I have to copy/move these folders as well as the iphoto library?
    Thanks for the help.

    Dimitri
Welcome to the Apple user to user assistance forums
No - iPhoto is only concerned with the iPhoto library - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library as a single entity to the external drive - launch iPhoto while depressing the option (alt) key an use the select library option to point to the new library location.
