Move DB to new server - Oracle Linux 4 old, Oracle Linux 5 on New

We are planning on moving our Datawarehouse db to a new server.
The old server has Oracle Enterprise Linux 4 and our server admin, using her infinite wisdom and after we agreed to keep the O/S the same - installed Oracle Linux 5.
I was planning on installing the oracle_home, etc. all with the exact same names, the mount points would be the same so in theory, just start the db on the new server.
Now that its a different version of the O/S - will it work?
Has anyone tried this before?
I will be trying with a small test DB but don't want to run into any gotchas when I try to "move" the 2.5t datawarehouse db.
Thanks.

Its certified, db version 10.2.0.4 but just about everything I've read via google etc. says if the db thinks the O/S is different, you have to use either exp/imp, datapump or tablespace move from one db to the other (really a copy and we don't have the disk space).
Thanks.

  • Why is it not possible to move a SCCM 2012 Server to a new Domain?

    Hello everybody,
I know it is not supported to move a SCCM 2012 Server to a new Domain. But I am still missing why it is not supported or possible....
I could not find anything that explained it in detail on the forums/internet. So when the question comes up in front of a customer it is always better to have a good argumentation...Can somebody describe the reasons why??
Thank you very much in advance!

    Have them call CSS then.
It's ultimately the result of the design of the product but not an explicit decision. To my knowledge, it relies on the domain name for certain things and this is explicitly embedded with no defined way to change this. Could it be changed? Probably.
But, that would take a lot of work and effort and is not something Microsoft has ever invested any time in.
The grass is green and the sky is blue. Knowing why doesn't change these.

  • Oracle Reports Server on Linux

    To the Oracle Reports Team!
During the last weeks there were a lot of posts about the not working Reports Server on Linux; the common understanding is: there is a defect in the software.
As I undestand, you looked to all of them and was busy working on a solution; that's why we did't hear from you for so long, right?
But now, I (and the other folks) would like to now the afairs's state, please!

  • Installing Oracle App Server on Linux

    Hi,
Has anyone installed the App Server on Linux? Can they tell me if it was difficult, complicated, etc. bearing in mind that I am not a DBA, and have basically no experiance with this sort of stuff at all. So basically what I am asking is can you stick in the CDs and follow the install guide and get it done in half a day or less.
    Cheers.

I would say that a half a day is grossly underestimating it, by my experience and what you indicate your level of expertise is. I ended up installing, getting to a fail point, uninstalling and re-doing. Some errors are "recoverable", but some do not seem to be (from my experience). I'd make a few recommendations. I have it installed on Mandrake 8.x (latest release, I think), which seems to be "doable" but I'd recommend going with a certified platform if you don't know what you are doing. Also, Mandrake had some quirks like their security management software which resets file permissions "behind the scenes". This was my first experience with Mandrake so it took me a while to figure out which files to edit/fix so that Enterprise manager would get the right data.
    Read the readme!
Read the installation docs all the way through!
Read the release notes all the way through!
I had a NUMBER of problems, some specific to my platform (which is not certified by Oracle, so it's not their fault) and some which were covered in the readme. It took me a while to get everything right and I ended up struggling most with the Infrastructure install. Most likely that was due to my hardware & OS (Mandrake), but there are some issues in the release notes that are important. The reason I would restart many times is that I wanted the installation to go smoothly from start to finish so that I could better understand the requirements, etc. Examples of issues (which includes things from the readme/release notes and otn):
    - either install PDKSH or link /bin/bash to /bin/ksh. /bin/ksh is listed in one of the scripts as the shell during installation configuration. This should be in the installation guide as a pre-requisite.
    - install the sysstat package so the enterprise manager will show graphs, etc. This should be in the installation guide as a pre-requisite.
    - link (symbolic) your perl binary to /usr/local/bin/perl
    - I received numerous link errors due to two problems:
    - genclntsh didn't have a good link command for my platform. There seems to be two work-arounds posted around here, but I chose to add -lgcc and -L/path/to/gcclib on the ld line. E-mail me if you want more details ([email protected]). My path was something like: /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i586-mandrake-linux-gnu/2.96 where I found the libgcc.a
    - Reports server and Forms server failed because the link line was linking to libXm.2.1.so instead of libXm.2.0.1.so (or libXm.2.so, etc). The development team evidently used a later version of Motif than I had, so I fixed it in the forms and reports makefiles, respectively.
I can't remember, offhand, what else I had to do, but this covers it. Obviously, a lot of this depends upon the type of install you choose. I wanted the reports server, which requires the infrastructure, etc.
    Good luck.

  • Use unused server as share point server after move databases to new server

    HI,
we have a single server share point farm (ServerApp01) for Intranet and it connects to a SQL SERVER 2008 R2 database server (Server02),
and now  we moved all sharepoint databases and content dbs to new sql server in different server (ServerSQLNew).
using sqlalias we point to new SQLSERVER 2012 Instance in this new server.
    - now the old sql server (Server02), is not in the sharepoint  farm
    - now can i add this server in intranet farm and  use this old server (Server02) as wfe server ?
here my doubt is  when i open cliconfg.exe i saw that sharepoint server pointing to this old server name (Server02),
after i will join this server to existing farm is any issues?
    adil

    hi
i already turned off sql server instance in old sql server in my case in Server02.
    In share
point Server (ServerApp01) i opened cliconfg.exe and add sqlaliases to point to new sql server.
If i rename  server02 server or rebuild
the server with a clean OS install  still  Sharepoint Farm works right?
below is the scenario of sqlalias in sharepointserver (serverapp01)

  • Migrating IMAP from 10.4 server to Linux

I have an Xserve running OSX 10.4 and since Apple has left the server business, I need to move this to a Linux server.
How do I move all emails and users to. Linux installation? What IMAP server for Linux is best suited for this? What tools do I need?
I have about 50 email users on the Mac, and I don't have access to their passwords, so any tools that act as an email client and move emails between servers may be hard to use, I suppose? I suppose I could reset their passwords, and then have them pick new ones on the new server. But the best thing would be to just do the migration and move the IP over to the new machine and then it would just work for them as it always has.
    Any ideas?

Hi Jonas, not sure where all these things are on Server, but on Client...
First Quit Mail, then I'd backup these two Mail folders, by right clicking on them in the Finder, then choose Archive/Compress.
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail Downloads
(Could be a different folder here if you chose such in Mail Prefs)
Right click on that Mail folder, choose archive, you'll get everything in the folder, and the folder itself in a file called Mail.zip, move it to a safe place, same for the Mail Downloads folder... only the plist is separate.
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
    For Address Book, quit AB...
    Files...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.abd.plist
    Folders...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/com.apple.AddressBook/
Trouble with Passwords is that they're likely encrypted in some Keychain.

  • Blank printout in report 6i from Application server oracle 9i

    Hello,
3 days before our application server (oracle 9i for windows NT 1.0.2.0.0) hard disk crashed.
    We have installed AS.
Now when user runs report from client pc and selects destination type as "cache" and submit query he can see the output. When he changes destination type as "printer" and give printer name (as installed on AS) in destination name and submit query the message "Report output was successfully printed out" comes but on printer only blank page is printed.
This happens for all laser printers installed on AS, but not for line(generic) printer.
On 2nd AS I have same printers as on 1st AS.There printouts are coming properly.
Please tell me what I have missed on while installing new AS.
    Thanks

  • Siebel 8.0, cannot start Siebel Server in Linux 5.1

    Hi there,
I am trying to install Siebel 8.0 on an AWS cloud server, using Linux 5.1. It is 32-bit with 1.7 GB of RAM. My Db is Oracle 11g, located on another server (necessary to free up the limited amount of RAM). I can sqlplus and odbcsql ok to it. For some reason, however, I am unable to get the Siebel Server to start properly.
When I log into srvrmgr ( srvrmgr /e SBA_80 /g siebel:2320 /u sadmin /p sadmin), it connects, but shows the siebel server is unavailable:
    srvrmgr> list servers show SBLSRVR_NAME, SV_DISP_STATE, INSTALL_DIR
    SBLSRVR_NAME SV_DISP_STATE INSTALL_DIR
    siebel Not available /u02/siebel80/siebsrvr
Does anyone know if Siebel 8.x can be installed in this Linux 5.1 environment? If so, any suggestions why Siebel Server is unavailable? Also, when we run evt (for both installs, I believe), we get a critical error to upgrade the OS to 2.6.5-7.97-bigsmp. What does this mean, and how serious is it?
    Thanks,

    Hello all,
I was eventually able to get the install to work with Siebel 8.1. I believe there may have been some compatibility issues with 8.0 and our AWS Linux environment. When I ran 8.1, I was eventually able to get thru all the installs and connect to my Siebel server.
Memory was also an issue, since 1.7 GB is all that's available for a 32-bit machine. We resolved this by putting Oracle Db on another AWS image.
A few issues that I ran into and what I did that worked for me:
    - used sadmin/sadmin for High/Low users, for some reason my custom users didn't work for me.
    - updated LD_LIBRARY_PATH often! I set it before install process, and after running any siebenv.sh scripts:
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH

  • Move VM from one server to another using Local Repositories

    There is the following structure:
    ovhost-01 with first_repo
    ovhost-02 with second_repo
    Oracle VM version: 3.1.1
Both first_repo and second_repo are Local Repositories.
On ovhost-01 I have VM named "TestOVM" with status Stopped .
    Task:
Move VM from ovhost-01 to ovhost-02 using "Clone or Move" section from VM Manager ( http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E27300_01/E27309/html/vmusg-vm-manage.html#vmusg-vm-move )
Whenever I try VM moving virtual disk stays on the first_repo.
With shared NFS-storage this feature working well.
    Question:
Is it possible to move VM from one server to another with Local Repositories ?

Neither ovhost-01 nor ovhost-02 have access to each other. It move or copy... the admin server that is connected to the local repository would have to have access to the target repository.

  • Need to communicate c server on linux & java client on windows

Hi!! I am new to socket programing in both C and Java.
From let I downloaded some client server example for c and java and tried that to link !! (I allways learn this way , and I need to do that little urget )
though cient server in linux is working perfectly fine and same for java. But problem is when I tried to communicate C server on linux and java client on windows, I end up with getting some junk characters. Though they are connected successfully.
Here goes code for java client:
    package whatever;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.net.*;
    public class Requester{
         Socket requestSocket;

    1) what I am trying to accomplish by the above code is: - just need to echo/print from the Server , message send by the Client. I know code is not that good but should be able to perform this basic operation( according to me ).You are wrong. I told you that it won't work as long as you are using ObjectOutputStream and ObjectInputStream. You shouldn't write objects.
    2) Message sent by the client is "hello world"(hard coded). No, it's not. You are writing a serialized byte array.
    3) what I am getting at the client end is "*message recieved: ur*" (before that It shows the Ip of client machine)
It should print "hello world ".See above.
You are having a problem, and I have told you what the problem is.hey I dont know what went wrong but . I posted all this just next to my first post ...before you posted !!
And hard coded byte array includes "hello world"...may be I am not able to explain properly.

  • Error installing Forms/Reports Server on linux m/c having EBS R12 installed

    Hi,
We are trying to install Forms and Reports server (Oracle Application Server 10gR2 (10.1.2.0.2) Forms and Reports Services) on a linux x86 box. The box already has Oracle E-business Suite R12 running on it. Our end goal is to install Oracle Transport Management (OTM), which requires Oracle Forms and Reports server to run its reports. When installing Forms and Report server I am getting following error. During installation, I gave a different set of ports to be used by Oracle Forms/Reports Apps server (and not the default) in staticports.ini and ensured that those ports are available. Any idea what could be the issue. If the issue is due to port conflict, how do I find which is the conflicting port. Also, is it possible to re-use Oracle Applications' Forms/Reports server for other applications like OTM.
Get the following error during installation of Oracle Application Server 10gR2 (10.1.2.0.2) Forms and Reports Services:
. Please also check the logs located at
ORACLE_HOME/dcm/logs to determine why DCM was unsuccessful in updating
the configuration files on disk. Some possible causes are:
    * permissions on files
    * file contention issues on Windows NT
    * internal Oracle error
After resolving the problem that prevented DCM from updating the configuration
files, you may use the dcmctl resyncInstance command to resolve the problem.
Alternatively, you can stop and then restart the active dcmctl or EMD
process and resyncInstance will automatically be performed.

    So ...
After a lot of searches, it was necessary a help from a Weblogic Administrator to find out what was going on with the installation process. The problem was with the memory allocation to the Weblogic VM. The process EMGC_OMS1 could not be started cos it was not possible to create a VM into SERVERADMIN.
With just my DB experience I could not find any logs besides emctl.log and that one that it's shown in OEM Installler interface. The Weblogic Administrator was browsing the HOME where the Weblogic was installed and he found logs that showed the error telling where the problem was. Even downloading the OEM 12c 32bit, it was allocated memory to the java as if it was 64bit. The solution was decreasing the values of memory and clicking in Retry. So, my OEM Cloud Control 12c it's working now.

  • 2 listener 2 instance 2 sid 1 server oracle 10g

    hi forum,
I'm new to oracle, and gut stuck if using 2 instance:
    I'm configuring 1 oracle 10gR2 in a windows 2003 R2 Enterprise with SP1
CPU using 2.4GHz and mem 16GB with swap 32GB.
I already succeeded creating 1 instance and 1 listener with DBCA and NetCA
I can see that I can create another instance and another listener with a different port
but I can't make both work.
    - can oracle have 2 listener and listening to 2 different port (port 1521 & 1522) with 2 different instance and 2 different sid name in one server oracle?
    - if can how to configure the listener.ora and the tnsnames.ora?
Thanks in advanced guys, really need your input and help.. thanks

  • Move databases to new hardware

I have a server Server090 with some old hardware. I'm planning to move the databases to new hardware but the server will keep the same name. I'll reinstall the management agent on the new hardware. How will that interfere with the old management agent in GC?
Will GC just resynchronize after a while or do i have to clean up GC before installing the new node. The server name will remain the same.
Has anyone gone through this and can share good/bad experiences?
    Cheers.

This is my question...i have to replace a server serverx. that server has a bunch of databases on it and a management agent. It's only a database server.
Grid control is already aware of this server.
In terms of replacing the server serverx, we'll get another server servery on the network and rename it as serverx. of course the original serverx will become servery. My question is what do i have to do to Grid Control...Will everything just work after i install the management agent on serverx (which is now on different hardware)?
