Move Default Catalog from Preferences to Catalog Settings

At present the Default Catalog setting is in Preferences > General Tab.
I suggest to move it into <Catalog Settings>.
Reasons:
1) It's not logical to have it in Preferences while there is a special dialog for Catalog Settings;
2) Novice users will get confused if some of the Catalog settings are in Preferences;
3) It's cumbersome to have to check in two different dialogs to check all your Catalog Settings;
WW

+1 vote, although I was thinking about sucking the catalog preferences in with the rest, instead of the other way around. However ya look at it - combining them into one UI would be a nice touch, IMO.
I don't know what technical hurdles there would be (and its kindof a small thing in my eyes) - but certainly its doable...
PS - I was talking just about the UI, not the storage, not sure about OP.

  • How do I make my Catalog Settings stay the same for each new Catalog I create?

How to you set a default Catalog Settings parameter that is different from what the Adobe engineers have set us with?
I have 30" monitors here, so I want the standard preview size of every new catalog to be set to 2048 pixels.
I redundantly back up my catalogs via two different layers of hardware mirroring, so 'no' I don't want prompted once a week when I open one of various catalogs if I want to backup right then.
I have 50+ Terabytes of removable mirrored hard drive space, with individual project libraries that feed into 1.5TB master removable disk libraries, so I'd like to, by default, NEVER discard 1:1 previews, at least until Lightroom gets about 2000% faster in rendering them on the fly.
This is of hot topic for me since I just noticed Lightroom had been discarding 1:1 previews that I had spent large amounts of time creating just over a month ago as I've begun transitioning my archives from Aperture to LIghtroom.  At any point, I'll maybe have access to only 1/15th of the actual DNG's in my catalog because they're offline, so keeping full sized previews of archived files is extremely important for my workflow.

    John,
    That's simple & perfect.
    thank you.

  • How do I move a file from one catalog to aanother?

How do I move a file from one catalog to another?

The ambiguity in your first question was that you didn't state which product you were on about - Photoshop?, Lightroom? Bridge? Elements? and which version of these? As I said you clarified this in your second question. I did say that I felt that you have a hidden agenda because you escalated in to insults about Adobe within 5 minutes or so of your first question. It appeared to me that what you were wanting to do right from the outset was to vent your anger at Adobe. That wasn't stated directly in any of your posts hence my opinion that you had a hidden agenda.
As Silk rooster said we are not employees of Adobe just users of their products (look for the word staff next to a users name to identify if they are a forum member or a member of staff).
Incidentally before you correct my spelling (ambig(e)uous) make sure that your own post is free from spelling and or grammatical errors. I am dyslexic and therefore rely on spellcheckers, which aren't always perfect, but hey - thanks for pointing out my shortcomings.
    Cheers

  • Can I move my catalog from  Elements 3.0 (PC) to Elements 12 on my new IMac?

I just bought a new iMac. I have about 3500 pictures on my old PC in Elements PC. They are all tagged. Is there any way I can move this catalog to the iMac?

Buy the boxed version of PSE 12, since that contains both platforms. Then install PSE 12 on your windows machine and upgrade your catalog to PSE 12, then do a full backup to a removable drive (not discs). Install PSE 12 on the mac and restore there.
The mac organizer doesn't understand catalogs from windows version prior to PSE 9, so this is the simplest way.

  • How to move LR catalog from one external hard drive to another

I'm having issues with the external hard drive that my LR5 catalog resides on, and I would like to move it to a new external hard drive.  I'm a little nervous to do this for fear of disrupting my catalog.  Can anyone give me the steps to do this safely?

You can move your catalog file using your operating system. Double-click on the file to open it.

  • Catalog Settings.

    Hi all,
I am trying to change my Catalog Ircat folder settings, from the C (default) drive to another drive.I go into Edit>Catalog Settings. But only can see an option to show the folder were it already is.
So how do I change the folder location?
    Thank you
    josel

The easiest way is to move the catalog folder and its contents (default name is Lightroom) to the new location then open the folder and double click on the file with the Lightroom Catalog.lrcat file.
Also, make sure that the catalg settings are as shown in the following screenshot. This will ensure that Lightroom opens this catalog next time you launch it

  • Can't import new photos to default catalog in LR3,5

    Hi!
I'm running LR3,5 on OSx10.5.8 and recently I've lost the ability to import new photos (from hdd). My default catalog (so far I've been using only one) contains appx.33k photos and I can't import new shots. Yesterday I was shooting tethered camera and everything went fine. Today I wanted to import new files (from hdd) and noticed that "import button" is completly inactive. Dead. I set up a new catalog and managed to process todays photos but when I'm switching to previous catalog the "import" button is still dead.
    Thoughts? Ideas? Please help!
    Thank you in advance!

Just checked the histogram issue-seems OK:
I'm a bit ashamed to ask but where do I find preferences file?
    Thanks in advance,
    Kuba

  • LR5 catalog settings "preset"?

When creating a new catalog, I would like the new catalog settings to be a certain way (different from the default settings). How can I "preset" the catalog settings so that every time I create a new catalog, it already has my preferred settings?

There's no way to do that, and that's because Lightroom works best as a single catalogue. Rather than fragmenting control of your pictures, you can use metadata fields like Job to track individual assignments.
What you could do is create an empty catalogue with settings as you want, then copy the file each time you want to set up a new catalogue.

  • Can I rename and move a catalog?

I recently made a full backup of my LR2 catalog, (18,000 photos) which was on my PC, and transferred it to my new Mac. When I made the backup, I accidentally included a folder of personal photos, which I would have preferred to be a second catalog.
So, I just exported the entire folder of personal photos as a new catalog. All went well. I then deleted the photos from the original catalog. Now, I have two catalogs one is named "Personal Photos" and the other is named "Full Backup." Well, that won't do.
I'd like to rename the "Full Backup" catalog to something more descriptive of the work stuff included. Also, both catalogs are in the Pictures folder, but they follow different paths afterwards. The Backup catalog is under pictures > Lightroom Catalog > Full Backup > Photos > (then the various sub folders). The Personal Photo Catalog is under Pictures > Lightroom > Personal Photos.
Is there a way to rename the Full backup and then move both catalogs so they take essentially the same path?

Steve, you have to remember that LR's works as a database - anything you do (move etc) within LR will be recognised whilst anything done outside of LR causes it a headache lol. So if you start shifting/dragging folders around outside of LR the links will be lost, lots of question marks will appear in the corner of your images and you'll then have the laborious process of telling LR where the images are now to be found.
Within LR's library (left hand panel) you can right click and rename folders if you want and these will also be renamed in the OS's folder structure. The same applies to moving folders - just hold down with the left mouse button and drag the folders to where you want to.
So in short, DO NOT drag within Finder if you want to spare yourself and LR a headache but instead do the dragging from within LR itself which will also be reflected in finder.

  • Adding entries of default-catalog.xml into my custom resource catalog

    Hi,
How can I add the contents of the default-catalog.xml into my own resource catalog?
    Use Case:
I am creating my own resource catalog and under that catalog, I wanted to add two folders. One contains my custom links and the other folder should contain all of the
entries in the default-catalog.xml. I tried dragging my default-catalog.xml into my custom resource catalog but it is appearing as a catalog reference and not as foldrs.
    How to do this?
    Thanks
    Webcenter 11.1.1.6

    Hi.
Try to add manually in "Source" tab and not with "design drag & drop".
You only have to copy <contents> information from default-catalog to your <contents/> folder information.
In this link i share you have a custom resource catalog with two folders: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/46128268/OTN-Samples/catalog1.xml
PD: It's a PS4 resource catalog archive, it's only for your help.
    Regards.

  • How can I move my catalog and pictures to a new computer?

I'm using PSE 6 under XP.  I want to install PSE 8 on a new Win 7 computer.  How can I move all my pictures and my currnet catalog to the new computer?
    Thanks,

Install PSE 8 on the old computer and convert your catalog to PSE 8 format there.  Then use the backup/restore method in PSE 8 to move the catalog and photos to the new computer.  See these FAQs for details:

  • Catalog settings and meta data is there a better way.

    HI
I have adobe cs4 and light room 2.2 I do my editing in LR cropping exposure web galleries and so on on, thats all well and good but any modifications i make will not show up in the bridge unless i go into light room and apply save meta data to files. I have about 400 light room catalogs as I store the catalog in the folder that contains the original image. Is there a way to have light room automatically apply meta data changes to each catalog in stead of going to catalog settings or saving the meta data to the file. its a pain in the *** to have to go into a catalog and apply all those settings if i want to do some editing in the bridge

    > ...is there a better way ...
Might I humbly suggest that your multiple (400!!) catalog strategy is flawed? You have defeated the benefits of having a single database. (And those that argue a database is bad concept and a possible single point of failure are ... well ... simply wrong.)
Lr can automatically write XMP data so that Bridge can read it. But the reverse is not true. Any changes that Bridge/ACR make will have to be imported into Lr with manually initiation.
The point and beauty of Lr is that you make the majority of adjustments in Lr. It's possible to make adjustments in Bridge and have them imported into Lr but as you discovered it is not automatic. And your workflow choice makes it doubly (or 400 times) more troublesome.
