Move Distribution point from Server 2008 R2 to Server 2012 R2
We have to upgrade one of sccm server 2008 R2 to server 2012 R2 on new box
Server 2008 R2 is a Distribution Point
I need to figure out right steps to move content and packages to new server and rather distributing all packages
Need to figure out any specific steps for upgrading from Server 2008 to Server 2012 before turning off DP.
We planing to use same Ip and server name and turn off and replace old server.
I would appreciate any help..
Thanks
RJ
RJ09
As a side note here, I would *not* use the same name. This will be a *new* DP and thus should be treated as such. You'll simply be migrating the content and re-adding it (the DP) to the same boundary groups as the old DP. You'll then retire the old
DP. The IP Address doesn't matter here.

Move a project from TFS 2008 to TFS 2013
Hi, we are using 2 TFS servers in our company. TFS2008 and TFS2013 SP4. Now I need to migrate one project (of 6) from TFS 2008 to TFS2013 with all the history and documents from SharePoint services. The TFS2008 is runnig on Windows Server 2008
x86 and SQL 2005 and WSS. TFS2013 is running on Windows Server 2012 R2 nad SQL2012 and SharePoint Server 2010.
I have found some discussions with this topic, most of them with backuping and restoring databases. But it was from TFS 2008 to TFS 2013 using TFSconfig.exe import. But this tool is not available in TFS 2013. Is it possible to do such task without installing
single use TFS2010?
Thanks, regards MartinHi Martin,
Thanks for your post.
You want only move team project source files and documents from TFS 2008 to TFS 2013 or you want move the whole team project data(source files and work items…) from TFS 2008 to TFS 2013?
If you want move whole team project data within history from TFS 2008 to TFS 2013, we suggest backup your TFS 2008, and install a new TFS 2010(or 2012) Server using the TFS 2008 backup, then
move the collection from TFS 2010 to TFS 2013 Server directly, after moved successfully, you can delete the unwanted team projects from moved collection in TFS 2013.
If you want only move the source files and document from TFS 2008 team project to TFS 2013 Server, you can create a new team project in TFS 2013 Server, then try use the
TFS Integration Tools to move source files from TFS 2008 team project to this new created TFS 2013 team project, but you need note the limitations in this tool.

SharePoint 2013 Server OS upgrade from Windows 2008 R2 to Windows 2012 R2
Is it possible to have SharePoint 2013 farm to have mixed version of OS (Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 2012 R2).
We have a request to upgrade our farm servers from WIN 2008 R2 to Win 2012 R2. We have 5 servers in farm -
2 App servers - running with Central Admin, Service Applications, User Profile
3 Web Front End Servers- running web application, search and workflow manager
the database layer is separate on sql 2012 R2
We want to upgrade OS from windows 2008 R2 to windows 2012 R2 and SQL to SQL 2014.
What will be right approach to do OS upgrade in above scenario to minimize the impact of downtime.
May be add windows 2012 based servers in farm one by one and replace the windows 2008 R2 based servers from server.
Regards,
Kunal AbrolIts possible, but I wouldn't recommend it. The problem is that you can only install SharePoint 20103 on Windows Server 2012 r2 using the slipstreamed SP1 version. I assume that you used the regular version to install on you Server 2008 r2 versions.
Even if you upgrade those servers to SP1 there are some minor differences in the builds between slipstreamed SP1 and upgraded SP1. So although it will work it isn't recommended.
Also, you should be aware the upgrade of inplace SharePoint servers running Windows 2008 r2 to Windows 2012 r2 is not supported.
To upgrade to server 2012 you'll need to add 2012 servers to your environment using the slipstreamed version os SharePoint and then remove the old server 2008 r2 servers as soon as possible. For the period of the upgrade you should be able to get away
with running the farm in a mixed state.

Migration of AlwaysON database from WSFC 2008 + SQL2012 to WSFC 2012 + SQL2014
Hello All,
I have a 6 node GEO cluster, 4 nodes in primary site + 2 nodes in secondary site. In the primary node 03 and 04 has 2 pair of SQL instances default + named.
I am planning to move the named SQL pair from WSFC 2008 + SQL2012 TO WSFC 2012 + SQL2014. It has only one AG group with 4 TB of DBs.
Do you guys have any experience and options for this migration. I am planning to go with backup/restore. Let me share yours inputs.
1. Backup/restore 2. cross cluster migration 3.Detach/attach 4. SAN migration
Thanks!
Muthukkumaran Kaliyamoorthy
Helping SQL DBAs and Developers >>> SqlserverBlogForumSince WSFC does not support rolling upgrades, you will need to have another WSFC running Windows Server 2012/R2 (R2 is highly recommended due to the features available for maintaining high availability) and do a cross-cluster migration. Refer to this documentation
for more details.
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj873730.aspx
This requires that you're fairly comfortable with PowerShell.
The main challenge here is dealing with hardware resources since you will need additional servers when moving into the new WSFC. You would have to run multiple instances on the same cluster node while you remove a node and repurpose it for WSFC 2012/R2.
This is where proper planning is very important to make sure you are maximizing your resources while minimizing downtime. I cannot speak about the capabilities of your SAN as each vendor will have different features but my approach has always been dependent
on SLAs and recovery objectives. Backup/restore will still be needed to synchronize your data from the old WSFC to the target WSFC.

NW 6.5.8 CIFS access from Server 2012 R2 (domain auth)
Need to access (without installing client) NW 6.5.8 server from Server 2012 R2.
Up to Server 2008 R2 Domain authentication works perfectly fine, on 2012 R2 I managed to get it working a couple of times, never again. Reverting to eDir authentication with SMB Signature disabled works (can access shares fine)
Is that known issue? (not that I would expect any fix for an obsolete OS)

Server 2012 X64 R2 DNS Server keeps shutting down after inplace upgrade from Server 2012 X64
Hi,
ever since upgrading from Server 2012 X64 to Server 2012 R2 X64 my dns server keeps shutting down every several minutes before having to do a restart. When viewing the event log this is all I see..
The DNS Server service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 497 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 60000 milliseconds: Restart the service.
if I look in the Application Error Log, I will also find the following:

I have tried removing and then reinstalling the DNS Server role, but the same situation occurs..
thanks,Hi,
I'm going crazy, I've upgraded my Server 2012 Standard to Server 2012 R2 Standard and now my DNS server keeps crashing since the in place upgrade. I have finally narrowed it down to it only crashes after several minutes if I load the data from
a file instead of the registry. As a test I:
-1- killed all my dns data,
-2- uninstalled the dns server role
-3- deleted the /windows/system32/dns directory
-4- reinstalled the DNS server role
-5- used the wizard to create a DNS server and a forward zone.
everything works okay, no crashes, then I change the advanced propertied of the DNS server to load from file, restart the DNS server and once again it crashes every 2 minutes..
Please help, this is killing me..
thanks in advance.. -
Move SUP role from Server 2008 R2 to new Site System running Server 2012 R2
Is it possible to move the primary SUP role which is currently running on a separate site system under Server 2008 R2 (WSUS 3.0 SP2) and move it to a new site system running Server 2012 R2 using the same SUSDB? I've moved the SUP role
around before by setting up a secondary SUP (using the same DB) then removing the primary SUP role which causes the secondary SUP to become the Primary but that was using the same version of OS and WSUS. With the version of WSUS being different
on Server 2012 R2, I was thinking this may not be possible since the documentation says the WSUS versions must be the same when creating multiple SUP roles.Hi,
>>I was thinking this may not be possible since the documentation says the WSUS versions must be the same when creating multiple SUP roles.
As the document indicated, "When you have multiple software update points at a site, ensure that they are all running the same version of WSUS." So the scenario you decribed should be not supported.

SCCM 2012 Distribution Point not working properly on a Windows 2012 Server
I have an SCCM SP1 site running on a Server 2008 R2 machine. I had a couple of distribution points, also running on 2008 machines. These served as DPs and PXE boot points. I had no problems with these.
I resently added a Server 2012 machine, and set it up as a DP, with a PXE boot point. The servers is part of a boundary group containing about 1500 clients. I distributed all of packages that are included in my main task sequence, and am able
to PXE boot, and image machines successfully.
However, I am having problems deploying other packages and Windows update packages from this DP. It seems like I am only able to deploy packages that have the "Copy the content in the package to a package share on distribution points" enabled.
If this is not enabled, the client will get the deployment policy, but will never download the package. The "In Progress" tab for the deployment status will just say "Waiting for content".
I have checked the rereqs for IIS on the Server 2012 DP, also checked the firewall. Everything that I see seems to be OK. Are there other things that I can check to determine why this DP isn't working right?Hello,
According to the following description, this behavior would be normal:
If you configured the option Run program from distribution point on the
Distribution Points page of the Deploy Software Wizard, do not clear the option
Copy the content in this package to a package share on distribution points, because this will make the package unavailable to run from distribution points.

Linked Server from SQL 2008 to Connect to 2012 read only replica never works
I have two Production Database Servers
1. SQLServer2008 (2 Nodes Cluster)
2. SQLServer2012 with 2 read only replica (3 Nodes Cluster)
I would like to draw a line here, We have routing table and URL working perfectly fine.
We have tested LINKED Server from 2012 Box to production Server by Specifying APPLICATIONINTENT = ReadOnly; it works perfectly fine, the routing is being used.
When we create linked server from SQL Server 2008 Box (Please note we have installed SQL Server 2012 Client tools on this box and Restarted the Servers) using the below script
USE [master]
EXEC master.dbo.sp_dropserver @server=N'AGL1', @droplogins='droplogins'
GO
EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedserver @server = N'AGL1'
,@datasrc='AGL1'
,@provider='SQLNCLI11'
,@provstr='ApplicationIntent=ReadOnly;Database=AdventureWorks2012'
Linked Server is created, Now when I run the Query
exec ('select @@servername') at AGL1
It always brings the Primary READ/WRITE node name only, after lots of research I found that, this linked Server is always using SQL Native Client 10.0 only, even after creating Linked Server using SNC 11, That is the reason it is not going to routing
table. Its always connecting to Primary node.
Below is the way I found it, on 2012 Production Server I executed below Query
SELECT session_id, protocol_type, driver_version =
CASE SUBSTRING(CAST(protocol_version AS BINARY(4)), 1,1)
WHEN 0x70 THEN 'SQL Server 7.0'
WHEN 0x71 THEN 'SQL Server 2000'
WHEN 0x72 THEN 'SQL Server 2005'
WHEN 0x73 THEN 'SQL Server 2008'
ELSE 'SQL Server 2012'
END,client_net_address ,client_tcp_port,local_tcp_port ,T.text
FROM sys.dm_exec_connections
CROSS APPLY sys.dm_exec_sql_text(most_recent_sql_handle) AS T
The help is taken from msdn (Link Provided below) for the above Query
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd339982.aspx
and I found it always uses SQL Server 2008 SNC.
My Question is, is there a way to force SQL Server to use SQL Server Native Client 11.
Has anyone tried this setup?
Thank you in advance.Unfortunately no, there is no other way of forcing it without restart. The SQL Server stack has no idea of the existing Native Client as it booted prior its installation. And you cannot force "DLL reload" without proper service restart.

Downgrading from Server 2012 to 2008
I have already purchased Server 2012 standard 64 bit and installed it only to find out that the software I am running only accepted Server 2008. How do I downgrade to Server 2008. Also, will I be able to use the 2012 when my software accepts
it? Thanks.I recommend you install Hyper-V role on your Server 2012 (Std comes with license for 2 VMs), setup a Server 2008 VM for your legacy software, and put serious consideration into dumping the software that does not work on Server 2012. Server 2012 has been
out for 3 years. A software vendor who has not kept up is not worth keeping.
And yes, you can downgrade to server 2008, although this is a horrible idea. By downgrade, I mean install Server 2008 from scratch, and get a 2008 license key from Microsoft under the same 2012 Std purchase.

Upgrade FIM 2010 R2 Sp1 Databases from SQL 2008 R2 to SQL 2012
Hi,
I want to upgrade my SQL from 2008 R2 to SQL 2012.
FIM Databases
1) FIMService Database
2) FIMSynchronizationService Database
Mentioned above are my FIM databases running on SQL server 2008 R2 . Now I was looking for some article which could tell me if SQL can be upgraded without affecting my existing databases of FIM or if i can move these databases to a new server having SQL
2012
Activity I want to perform : Create a fresh Server of SQL 2012 and move my FIM 2010 databases over it by restoring the backups. but as per the link below it seems not possible!
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/5465.fimilm-how-to-move-the-backend-sql-server-synchronization-service-database.aspxHi Shivam,
Please take a look here: Release Notes for Forefront Identity Manager 2010 R2 SP1.
In the table you have tasks to upgrade SQL for FIMService and FIMSych.
FIM Service:
Upgrade FIM Service servers to FIM 2010 R2 SP1
Stop FIM Service on all servers
Backup Database [in case rollback needed]
Upgrade SQL to SQL Server 2012
Start FIM Service on all servers
FIM Synch:
Upgrade FIM Sync to FIM 2010 R2 SP1
Stop FIM Sync
Backup Database [in case rollback needed]
Upgrade SQL to SQL Server 2012
Start FIM Sync
If you are not making in-place upgrade, I would do something like here:
Stop FIM Services
Backup the databases at SQL 2008
Restore backed up databases on SQL 2012
Make sure SQL Agent Jobs are moved (FIMService)
Make sure Broker is enabled on FIMService database
On FIM machines create SQL alias using cliconfg utility. Alias should have the name of "old(sql2008) SQL" and point to new name/instance.
Start FIM Services - they would use "old" name to connect, but it would be translated to new location. So they would start.
If you found my post helpful, please give it a Helpful vote. If it answered your question, remember to mark it as an Answer. -
Moving farm from Windows 2008 R2 to Windows 2012 (R2?)
I've been asked to move our current small SP2010 Server farm (WFE, App, and SQL) from Windows 2008 R2 servers to new Windows 2012 servers.
Any limitations that would prevent this from happening? Any major differences? Installation through the GUI won't be a problem? Any benefits to tout? I've installed 2012 R2 on a HyperV but haven't messed around with it much beyond that.
Thanks,
ScottFor SharePoint 2010, I would suggest sticking to 2008 R2. It is the most well tested operating system for SharePoint 2010. There may be some unknown gotchas that the community is unaware of with Server 2012 or 2012 R2.
Otherwise, everything should 'just work' with SP2 media.

Moving user profiles from Server 2012 with RDS services to User profile disks Server 2012R2
Hello i have a question about moving my C:\users profiles.
My current settings on the servers are:
AD-Server 2012
SQL-Server 2012
TS- server with RDS roles (RDwebacces, RDs broker, RD session host) 2012
everything about user profiles is now in C:\Users
My new settings for the server will be:
AD-ActiveDirectory - server
SQL-Server
TS1- RDS (RDwebacces, broker, RDS server group management) 2012R2 (I have enabeld userProfileDisks to Filesistem server)
TS2- RDS(Session host) load balance 2012R2
TS3- RDS (Session host) load balance 2012
FileSistem - server ( here i will have on E: partition the new functionality UserProfileDisks) 2012R2
So is there a way to move profiles from TS - C:\Users to FileSistem - E:\UserProfileDisks
I am new to this so any idea wil be helpful.Hi,
If the UPD is configured on the server which holds existing user profiles, just select the option:
store all user settings and data inside the profile disk.
Since you are moving user profiles between different servers, then user profile contents need to be migrated manually.

Amy

Network Drives Losing Connection from Server 2012 to Windows 7 64bit Machines
I have about 20 users at my facility and recently upgraded our server from one running server 2003 to one running server 2012. Since that occurred, I have had numerous issues that I did not encounter on the old server.
Lately, users have been losing connection to the shared network drives randomly and constantly. The drives will come back on-line on their own but it could be 2 minutes or 30 minutes before they do and when users are in the middle of working on a document
from the network, they are unable to save until the drive comes back. Manually disconnecting and re-mapping them works sometimes but then the problem will re-occur. I have tried re-doing the shares and security settings and run a couple of supposed hotfixes
on the client side and the server side to no avail.
Now our regional office is suggesting that I re-connect the old server and then rebuild the new one with server 2008 r2, something I would like to avoid if possible.
I feel like this is a simple setting that I am missing, no conditions have changed except for the new server.
The server is a Intel Xeon CPU E5-2609 2.40GHz with Server 2012 64 bit on it. All computers (except on on 32 bit) are running Windows 7 Enterprise edition 64 bit.
Please help.I made this change to the registry on the server and am waiting to see if I have any more drops.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters
Value:
autodisconnect
Data
type : REG_DWORD
Value:
ffff (Hex)
There was a client side change suggested but I am missing that value for the client side change and others in the organization who don't have it are not experiencing this problem. -
In-place upgrade from Server 2012 to 2012R2 "just quits"

I am not trying to do anything special or scripted, just a standard OS upgrade.Hi Pepper, Malort, Robert and Brandon,
I am experiencing the same issue using either new release (april 2014) or the gold release 2012 R2 DVD from Volume license (SA) download. Both confirmed working on other installations. Setup just suddenly quits with the same non existent logs
files in $windows.~bt and c:\windows\setupact.log has a warning statement "Failed to change the UI language to en-US"
The server is running as a vm and would otherwise appear to be running perfectly. It is a DC(GC), DHCP, DNS & CA for my site.
Going to try System Update readiness Tool KB947821-v33.
Heads up MSFP Anne, any word on the cause and/or fix?
