Move (Drag) songs quickly up playlist

I have an IMac, OS is Snow Leopard version 10.6.8.  I have  ITunes version 10.6.1 (7).
I would like  songs I add to a playlist moved higher up above in the playlist quicker.
Let's say I have a long playlist of about 700 songs and I add a new song. That song is now on the bottom of the playlist, at number 700 or so.  Let's say I want to move it higher up to number 40 position on the playlist (because I organize playlists by singer).  As I drag the song up higher, I can only drag it one screen at a time. Each screen has about 35 songs. It takes a long time to do this, as I move the song one screen at a time, and there are a lot of screens before I get up to the number 40 position.   I assume there is a quicker way to drag or move the song up the playlist, rather than one screen at a time.  Please note that I do not like to keep my playlists in alphabetical order, neither by songs nor by singer.  I just keep them in the order they were downloaded. So alphabetizing is not an option. However, I do keep the songs by each singer together, so that all songs by the same singer or the same band are consecutive.

Make sure that the playlist you're trying to drag it to is a regular playlist, not a Smart Playlist (which pick up tracks automatically per the criteria set). Smart Playlists have a purplish icon with a gear-like symbol on them. You might find the following sites helpful:

    Hi Dennis!
I have a couple of steps for you to try in order to get those songs transferred to your iPod touch. First, make sure all of your software is updated with the latest versions. If the songs were downloaded from iTunes, you will also want to delete the songs from your library and then download them again from the list of past purchases on your iTunes account. An article about doing that can be found here:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519
If you try a sync after those two steps and are still seeing the issue, then I would like you to try syncing the iPod by setting it to manually manage. An article outlining more information on manually managing your iPod sync can be found here:
Managing content manually on iPhone, iPad, and iPod
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1535
If you are still having issues after that, I have another article that can outline some other reasons why your songs may not transfer to your iPod, and it can be found here:

  • Cannot drag songs into a playlist in iTunes

hmmmm... for some reason i cannot drag songs into a playlist in iTunes. what th.....

You cannot drag songs to smart playlists - that's what the "smart" is about; it does it itself

  • I can no longer drag songs into my playlists.

I can no longer drag songs into my playlists. I drag them over and nothing happens.

I have restarted several times and I still can't drag and drop. My only option is to control click and then it gives me a drop down menu of options including putting into a playlist. I think this alternative *****! Drag and drop was a whole lot easier

  • Can't drag songs into a playlist

    Hey folks,
I'm having trouble creating playlists and adding songs to playlists.  I've done this before (last year) but tonight I can't drag a song from iTunes store into an existing playlist and when I create a new playlist, it doesn't show up on the right hand side of the window just on the lefthand side.  I can drag songs from an existing playlist into a new playlist, but I've had no luck with new songs.  I just downloaded the latest iTunes version.  Any ideas?  Thanks!

just a thought but make sure when you make a new playlist its not a "smart" playlist.

  • Can't drag songs to new playlist

I have created several playlists in the past, but now it will not allow me to drag songs to a new playlist folder. I have illiminated the possibility that I might have too many playlists by simply deleting a few, and then trying again but to no avail. Here are the things I have done to try to remedy the problem:
    1. I have backed out of itunes and restarted it, twice
    2. I unplugged my itouch and plugged it back in
    3. Ran a diagnostic on the sync between itunes and itouch
    4. I made sure my itunes was up to date
    5. Deleted a few older playlists in case there wasn't any room (which I doubt)
Has anyone had this problem before? When I drag a song to my new playlist, the circle with the line through it sits over the song, this just shouldn't be happening. Does anyone have a solution to this issue? Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

    Thank you for the clarification.
Does this new playlist have a gear icon with a purple background or just a musical note on a blue background? If it is a gear icon, this is a smart playlist and you cannot drag songs to this kind of playlist.
When you right->click on a track and choose *Add to Playlist* does the playlist you want to drag it to show up as one of the options?

  • Yet another person who can't drag songs into a playlist

I am following the directions to burn a CD. 1. Select new playlist; 2. Name the playlist; 3. Open the music icon; 4. Drag the songs to the new playlist.
When I drag them to the new playlist (it is marked with a music note icon with a blue background) I get a number telling the amount of songs in the list and a circle with a slash though it, I assume meaning "no" since it doesn't work. I've read everything I can find on this and I feel like I must be missing something simple. Please help! Thanks!

just a thought but make sure when you make a new playlist its not a "smart" playlist.

  • Why is iTunes so difficult to use?  It is time consuming and not at all intuitive.  I will me complaining as much as possible until this is fixed.  We should be able to drag songs to a playlist...surely technology has come this far has it not??

So discourraged with iTunes that I'm debating getting myself and my kids different phones... shouldn't be this difficult... I end up with my sons music and he with mine... both of us are disgusted...had enough.

Until 3 months ago (when I bought a $10 no-contract phone for emergency use only) if somebody lent me their cellphone to make a call I had no idea how to do so.  I would get them to dial a number, talk, then I would hand it back to them to hang up.  Even now if my wife gives me her iPhone to make a call I have to ask her to do it because I have no devices of any kind that have touchscreens.  The timer went off the other day when she was out of the house and I somehow managed to get the thing quiet.
In comparison I have answered several thousand questions about many computer systems and applications on the ASC forums.  It's all a matter of familiarity and need.

  • Can someone pls tell me why is it that i cant drag from the itunes movies to the playlist, but i can drag the songs to the playlist.  Thanks.

Hi, can someone pls tell me why is it that I can't drag from the itunes movie library to the playlist, but able to drag songs to the playlist.  Thnaks.

Are you able to receive any mail at all? If not, make sure that all of your information for mail is accurate in settings again. if you still have nothing, go to your email through safari. (example: www.yahoo.com) If you do not see the emails here either, it is a problem with the password reset server not your mail app.

  • ITunes 10.4 can't drag songs into playlists

There is one glaring difference in the new iTunes 10.4 (80). I can't drag songs from one playlist to another. It doesn't matter whether the source is a smart playlist or a regular dumb one, or even the main music library.
smart playlist or dumb playlist or even the main music library) into other (dumb) playlist.
As a workaround, I can copy (cmd-c) and paste (cmd-v), but this is ... umm ... sub-optimal, because you have to change playlists to do it. Then when you go back to the first folder, any search you might have used before is now gone.
Is there any way to bring back drag and drop? Some weird .plist hack or anything?

Well. My first efforts to search for a solution were poorly executed, because I tried again and found lots of answers.
The problem appears to be using a Wacom driver. See the discussion here and (same thread) here and here. No idea when that will be fixed. I use a 8 or 9 year old Graphire, and drivers have been a problem for most of those. Sigh.
But this experience also made me learn that you can right click to add selections to a playlist.
I even learned how that first column works, which I never knew before.

  • How to reorder songs in a playlist?

itunes v7.3.2.6, running under windows 2000 on a dual p3-450. (Rock solid computer--uptime generally measured in months.)
ARGH! This is so incredibly frustrating!
I've got a few playlists that contain more than 100 songs. I'd like to reorder and move a song from near the end (say, #96) to the front of the list. And I'd like to accomplish this task within a few seconds. With the keyboard, if possible. I can select a song and drag it to the top of the "Name" column, and the playlist will (ever so slowly) scroll up. I'd estimate it at about 2-4 songs/second. At this rate, it's going to take quite some time (25 seconds or more in this example) before I'll reach the top of the playlist, where I can drop the song. Needless to say, this is far to slow to be acceptable.
In the world I live in (embedded software development), something like this can be done in about 1 second: I'd highlight the line in my editor, ctrl+c to copy it, ctrl+home to scroll to the top of the list, ctrl+v to paste it at the top, and be done. I don't think is too much of a stretch to expect to edit a playlist as I would edit text.
Am I missing some super-obvious and Apple-approved way to reorder the playlist?
Surely they don't expect me to spend a minute every time I want to move a song through the playlist, do they?
Is this problem all my own fault, simply because I have more than one screen worth of songs in a playlist? (Seriously, my mini playlist has 504 songs in it.)
I'll stop now, before I get into my other rant about how I'd like to reorder multiple songs (think, album) at one time.

As closely as I recall, go to 'Settings' to set up Shuffle, then go to your playlist and the tracks will then play in random order.

  • Moving songs around in playlists

I have several playlists set up in iTunes. Is there any way to manually move the songs within these playlists so that I can have them play in the order I want?
I have tried to drag them and it does not work, and I have also right-clicked to see if there is a "move up" or "move down" option and there is not.
    Thanks

Unfortunately..... doing that did NOT work for me.
I only have 4 playlists. In 3 out of 4 I can move the sounds around.... in the 4th I can't. And mysteriously.... the song order re-arranged itslef recently in that same playlist.
    Any ideas or suggestions?
