Move existing Aperture photos (from iPhoto) to Aperture's library's library

Hi,
I recently moved from iPhoto to Aperture. I did something wrong tho, since now most of my photos in Aperture are still in iPhoto's library (all of these show the "iPhoto Original" keyword).
I want to have them all in my Aperture's library, but I put many time on Aperture's organization and don't want to have to import all from the very beginning. Is there any way I can move those files still in iPhoto's library folder to Aperture's library? I plan to uninstall iPhoto after that, that's why I want all photos in Aperture's library.
Thank you

If the image is shown in Aperture, the image is in Aperture's Library.
The question is, where are the Master files on which the images in your Aperture Library are based.  (The keyword "iPhoto Original" tells you nothing about the location of the Master.)
Right-click an image.  Does "Show in Finder" appear in the pop-up menu?  If so, then your image has a Referenced Master (Referenced Masters are located outside the Aperture Library (the image is in the Library and has a pointer to its Master which is outside the Library)).  If not, your image has a Managed Master (the image, the pointer, and the Master are all inside the Aperture Library.
You can filter for images with Referenced or Managed Masters.  Also, most of the default Metadata Overlays include a Badge which will show you which images have Referenced Masters (as well as the status of the Master).
Since you (seem to) want to have all of your images' Masters be Managed (= inside the Aperture Library), simply select all images and execute the command "File→Consolidate Masters".  You can confirm that this has been done by using a Filter set to show all images with Referenced Masters.  It should show no images.
Once all of your Masters have been consolidated into your Aperture Library, you can safely delete your iPhoto Library.  You can also uninstall iPhoto is you wish.

1 - without specifics I have no idea how to help
2 - the question was "are you trying to use them in iPhoto? " - it sounds like you are - to do so you will have to export them from Aperature and import into iPhoto
3 - for information on how to use them in Aperature then you need to ask about how to use Aperature in the Aperature forum as it does not involve iPhoto

  • When importing photos from iphoto to Aperture....

When importing photos from iphoto to Aperture 3 it shows two versions of each image. One is original and one is iphoto edited.  It shows this for every picture even if it was never edited in iphoto.  Has anyone ever experienced this?  Is so, what image should I use to edit in iphoto?

This is asked and covered a lot here, a search of the list will bring up numerous other threads covering this. Also the More Like This box on the right side of the page will show you other posts on this topic.
This post, Duplicates when importing from iPhoto is the most recent example.
Briefly iPhoto took even the most trivial change to an image as an edit and created a new image. The most common reason for this is rotated images.
As for which image of the two you want to keep, that's entirely up to you. If there is really no difference between the two then you can keep either it makes no difference.
The thread I linked to above will explain how to use Aperture's filters to gather up all of one or the other.

    How did you import them?
Keywords are preserved if you use either the Import iPhoto Library or Show iPhoto Browser methods.

If the images are in the location you want them be sure to select "Add" at the top of the import dialog box.

  • Importing photos from iPhoto to Aperture

Importing from cd, Nikon camera, and cf memory card to Aperture Library is working well for me; but importing from iPhoto is troublesome.
If I import from the iPhoto Library (a Library that has always seemed unnecessarily complex to me), there is neither rhyme nor reason to the import. If I import from within the open iPhoto program, everything comes out badged--even when I send the information to the Aperture Library.
Does anyone have a preferred way of importing albums and smart albums from iPhoto to Aperture?
Do you think it might be best to simply leave what is on iPhoto there, and start fresh with new photos in Aperture?
    Thanks for your input,

I tried importing iPhoto ONCE. Ugh.
After deleting it (how arcane are rolls when Aperture
allows much better control), I then used reference
iPhoto library. Same issue with structure of course,
but at least it no longer duplicated space.
I then used Aperture's speed at selecting to
determine what I wanted to import into Aperture. I
then created my project and folder structure in
Aperture and drag/dropped my selected images to my
target project. Then I killed off the iPhoto
    reference.

Thanks, David, your response helps me feel somewhat less foolish/incompetent.
I had actually made peace with iPhoto5, using a combination of albums and smart albums, after disliking all the previous versions. Now, I just want iPhoto out of the way.
Last night I imported all iPhoto material into
Aperture (rolls, ugh!!). In addition, I set up two special albums for prized family photos.
After looking it over again this morning and reading your thoughts, I think that I will keep only the two special albums (from iPhoto) in Aperture, leave in iPhoto all the pictures that started out there, and backup the iPhoto pics on external hard drive. And never put anything else in iPhoto.
Once again, thanks for your helpful thoughts.

  • Importing photos from iphoto into aperture

    Hi
I am currently importing my photos one album at a time from iphoto into aperture as this is what I was told is the best way to do it. My organization up to now ***** so I am trying to organize everything now. But I have pictures in my iphoto library that were never put into an album, so how will I be sure that I have all the photos imported into aperture before I delete them???? Also how can you tell if all the pictures in a project are in an album? I had a picture in 2 different albums and deleted it from one album but it deleted it from both - what did i do wrong??

You may want to invest a tiny bit of time reading something like this before you put a whole bunch of time into organizing things in Aperture:

  • Transfer photos from iphoto to Aperture with snow leopard, how?

    hi all
how can i transfer photos from iphoto (in power book G5) To Aperture ( in MacBook Pro 17" with snow leopard), with same albums arrangement???? thanks

1- the size of iphoto library is 6GB, but in aperture its 11GB, y?
I think it's because you have the original images plus copies with any adjustments you made in iPhoto. It could also have to do with Aperture generating Previews.
2- now to copy the another iphoto library from the second old machine, i will replace its library with the iphoto library of new machine then copy it in aperture library, and after that i can delete the iphoto library to save hard space. is that correct? thanks
Just make sure you keep the copies on the old machines until you've backed up your new Aperture Library and made sure that everything is there. IMPORTANT: make sure that you chose to copy the images into your Aperture Library instead of keeping them in their current location. If you left them in the iPhoto Library and you delete that library, you delete your images!

  • Can I make a movie with just photos from iPhoto?

Can I make a movie in iMovie 11 using only still photos from iPhoto and no moving video?

Yes, you can. I just worked on a short movie project yesterday in which I added still photos to a short movie clip (caveat: I'm learning a new camera and iMovie 11 at the same time, so this answer comes by way of trial and error, not solid knowledge). After a few frustrated tries, I learned to use to Photo Browser to access my iPhoto library; then I learned you can only add photos to a project in the Project Library.
Since both methods you tried (Photo Browser and Window>Photos) were greyed out, and since both methods access your iPhoto library, my limited knowledge suggests that iMovie 11 can't find it. Apparently, the iPhoto library is the ONLY place that iMovie 11 looks for photos.
However, I just now tried dragging a photo from my desktop into a project in the Project Library, and it was successfully added. Give it a try.

  • I am trying to move a "face" photo from IPhoto to the picture well in a contact in my "Contacts".  Can't drag directly from iPhoto to picture well.  How do I do it?

I am tring to move a "face" photo from IPhote to the picture well in a contact from my "Contacts list". I followed directions in Help but Cannot double click the picture well then drag a photo.  It won't accept it directly from IPhoto. Once you double click on the picture well then click on the photo (in another application-IPhoto) it apparently negates the double click on the picture well.   The only place it will take a picture from is the "recents" that you get when you double click on the picture well in contacts.  How do I get the photo to the "recents" or to the picture well?

    Hi cavu10horses,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  This article has instructions for changing a contact's photo using a photo from iPhoto's Faces feature:
Contacts: Add or change contact pictures
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11580
Select a contact or your own card, and then double-click the picture well.
    Select a picture:
Drag an image to the picture well.
Click Camera to take a picture.
If you have pictures in iPhoto, click the Faces button to use a face from iPhoto.
If the contact is linked (it’s in multiple accounts, but displayed only once in Contacts) and has multiple account pictures, click Linked.
Click Edit to edit the picture.
To zoom in and out of the picture, drag the slider. Drag the picture to change which part of it is visible.
To rotate the picture, hold down the Option key while you click and drag the picture.
To apply special effects, click the Effects Gallery button and choose an effect.
    Click Done.
    Cheers,

  • Move photos from iPhoto to Aperture on different computer

I have a macbook pro and when I'm on vacation I loaded my photos into iPhoto 11 and edited them.  Now that I'm home, I want to move these photos into Aperture 3 on my Mac Pro computer.  What's the best way to do this?

Copy that iPhoto 11 Library to the Mac Pro and then import it to Aperture there.

  • Cannot import .jpe photos from iPhoto to Aperture.  Help!

I have just installed Aperture 2.1.2 trial version to explore if it will serve my purposes. However, when I tried to import my iPhoto library, approximately 2000 photos were said to be in an unsupported file format. It turns out that these are all the photos taken by my Konica Minolta 7D camera, which downloaded to iPhoto just fine as .jpe files (Minolta uses this file extension to indicate jpeg photos with embedded colour info--AdobeRGB in this instance).
I am more than a bit taken aback that a file format that works fine in iPhoto appears to not work in Aperture.
Does anyone have any suggestions about how to deal with this? If Aperture cannot cope with my KM 7D images, than I guess the trial is over.
Grateful for any help or advice from the community.
    Thanks!

I'm not sure about reversing the process you've described, but you can set up the equivalent structure (make albums in place of your iPhoto events) and use iTunes to synch your iPhone to Aperture instead of iPhoto. If you've decided to do your main work in Aperture this would perhaps be the best way forward.

  • Importing photos from iphoto to aperture causes blacks to turn blue. color corruption?

I have a large library of jpg photos in iPhoto 11 v 9.3.1  and imported the library into aperture 3.3.1
After importing to aperture, the thumbnails all look normal, but when I view the photos in full size, pure black is turning blue and pure whites are turning red.
is there a setting that i'm missing or do i need to prepare the iphoto library before importing to aperture to prevent this problem?
Has anyone else had this happen?
The original masters all look normal when viewed in the finder, so it seems like a problem with aperture.

To add to Kirby's excellent advice: Depending on the layout of your keyboard or your own command settings, the "Highlight Hot & Cold Areas" may be bound to a different key; You see the key when you select the command directly from the "View" menu. On my machine - with a german keyboard-  the key is much more complicated "⇧⌥H"  :

  • Duplicates when importing photos from iPhoto to Aperture 3

I have recently purchased Aperture 3 & am trying to import my events from Iphoto to A3 but each event I import has duplicates of EVERY image. Even if I have never edited the photo in Iphoto it always shows 2 photos of every shot? Any solutions to avoid this as it will be too hard to go thru each event & delete the duplicates. Too many!!

When I check my system info it reads that I have  2 memory slots x 2GB (don't really know what that means) and I am running MacOS 10.7.4 yes. I have 63GB of 499GB free so nowhere near 30%. Explains why it is running slow I guess :-)
So you have 4GB RAM, that should do if you do not run many applications in parallel, and you really need to free some disk space! There is a nice utility in the Applications > Utilities folder: Activity Monitor. Launc it and look at the runtime and memory usage. That will tell you if your system is running low on RAM. My MBP profited considerably from an upgrade to 8GB.
I am trying to back up on a WD external drive USB.  I don't understand what a firewire port is?
Firewire is a fast connection to external devices, and many external disks offer a firewire cable connection; the port usually is marked by a Y-Symbol:
Leonie, I have read something about duplicate annihalitor (or something like that). Would it pay to run that on my Iphoto first and delete duplicates? Have u used that programme?
I have never used it myself, but Terence Devlin recommends it frequently. It will find exact duplicates, if you imported the same image twice or made copies, but it will not remove the original masters of a version, afaik. Check it out here:
    Duplicate Annihilator:
Can I store my library on my external HD and just access it each time I enter Aperture so that my Mac HD doesnt get overloaded?
There is a better way in Aperture:
What I do on my MBP with limited space is to keep the Aperture library on the System volume, but (most of) the original master image files on an external drive. This is what is called a referenced Aperture library. I set the Aperture preferences to enable the creation of Previews. THis way I can browse my images, tag them, and rate them with stars even if I am on the road. The images can be accessed from the Media Browser and used in other iApps or the screen saver. Only when I want to edit an image I need to connect the external volume and to mount it.
To turn an image into a referenced image select it (or select several images at once) and from the main menu bar select: File -> Relocate master(s).  Then select a location where to store your masters on the external volume.
I usually import the new images as managed (stored inside the Aperture library) and relocate them to the external volume when I am through with editing. Perhaps this kind of workflow will be suitable for you too. Bt do not forget to backup the master images on the external volume as well.
