Move Files on Import?

The LR Help says I should be able to choose "Move Photos To A New Location And Import" in the Import dialog box. Unfortunately I don't see this option. All I see are "Copy Photos to a new Location" and "Import as DNG". How do I find the move option?

Well, the files are all writeable. Oddly, I can see the Move option when I bring up the Import dialog via the "Choose Files" choice rather than the button for my CF card as the source. Hmm.

  • Trouble opening mpeg movie files and importing into iMovie 08

Hi, I'd be most grateful if anyone could provide any solutions to the following problem...
A friend has emailed me two .mpeg movie files which are parts 1&2 of a home movie which I want to edit in iMovie and burn to DVD. The footage was shot on a miniHDV camcorder (not sure which brand).
Opening in QT 7.6 gives the following warning dialogue: "The movie could not be opened. The file is not a movie file."
The files will however play fine in VLC Media Player, but not in mpeg Streamclip (the file appears to play but the viewer is blank with no audio/video). Trying to import into iMovie is unsuccessful. The iMovie browser won't let me choose the files or drag/drop.
Any ideas. I read somewhere that iMovie 08 can't import mpeg-1 files. Do I need to convert the files, and if so how?
Thanks in advance, and apologies - this is my first experience of video editing.

I have QT Player but it hasn't "kicked in" when I try to import my videos.
Something called PIXE VRF Browser is supposed to help in the conversion. The QT MPEG-2 thingy won't install until I buy QT Pro, according to what I get on the screen.
Sounds like you have too many applications trying to do the same thing. Either use the Pixela Pixe VRF Browser or use the Mac applications (Mac OS Finder, Apple QT MPEG-2 Playback Component w/MPEG Streamclip) but not both to do the same job. The Apple Finder should be able to copy multiplexed VOB/MPEG-2 files from either your PC burned DVD or directly from your camcorder DVD to your MAC hard drive where MPEG Streamclip/QT MPEG-2 component can convert them for use in iMovie '08. Frankly, I don't understand your work work flow or why you want to import your files to a GOP editor in the first place if your goal is to do frame level editing in iMovie '08.
As for Jon's suggestion, I am on dial-up and cannot download big files at 3-4 Kbps snail pace.
What does this have to do with importing your camcorder files to your PC and re-burning them to DVD for use on your Mac? If I were to make a recommendation here, it would have been to use an external hard drive here rather than DVDs for transporting files between platforms and then only if you want the files available to both. If your goal is only to edit them in iMovie '08 or iMovie HD on your Mac, then why not cut out the "middleman" platform?
I wish I could purchase these updates on DVDs but the genies couldn't even tell me if there's such a service.
Totally confused here. Are you saying your DVR-D300 files were commercial produced or that you are dealing with torrent downloads of copy-written material? These are two separate issues with facets beyond the scope of this forum.
As for "platform", I have iMovie08. iMac does not read the mini RAM disks when I connect the camera to a USB port.
Are you saying the Finder doesn't read them or that iMovie '08 doesn't read them? Do you "finalize" your DVDs before trying to read them via USB as the manual states may be necessary as indicated on page 150 of your manual?
How can I find out that iMovie09 will let me import and edit my Panasonic videos?
You could try going to the Apple site and checking the the tapeless camcorder compatibility chart. The Panasonic DVR-D300 is specifically listed along with a hot link for additional information. However, this still won't help you you don't finalize the content.

  • Converting MOV Files for import results in loss of sound

I have some .mov files which will not directly import into iMovie 08. I believe this is because they were created using "save as..." from QT Pro, with an original file format of .mpg w/muxed audio.
I am now converting the .mov files using the "export..."comand from QT Pro. iMovie is recognising the results, weather it is .DV Stream, .Mp4, or even a true .mov file. The problem, every time I convert from the original .mov I loose the clips audio. Is this a side effect of converting a vid clip with muxed audio or am I doing something wrong?
Thank you for any help you may be able to provide.

QuickTime can't extract audio from muxed file formats. Don't use it.
MPEG Streamclip (free) can export to QuickTime formats with the audio. Use it.

  • FCPX Import movie file only importing audio?

FINAL CUT PRO X IMPORT ISSUE
When importing old dv converted movies (.mov format) from my FCP 6 Capture folders, I only get audio---there is no video file to edit.
The actual file in finder can play it just fine through QT.
I've tried transcoding, copying, leaving in place----nothing working.
Interestingly if I select the audio event in FCPX and select reveal in finder, it finds the copied file in FCPX folder structure and I can then play it Fine thru QT with video.
    Ideas?

    >old dv converted movies (.mov format)
the .mov file extension is not a format.  It merely indicates a QuickTime container.  The actual audio and video streams within that container could have been made from any number of codecs, some of which do not work natively in FCP.
Chances are the .mov file you're referring to was made using a non-native codec and would need to be converted prior to importing.  But since you didn't mention the codec used, I can only guess about this.

I have a DVD with .MOD movie files I am editing for a church. The files open in a PC with Windows Media Player, although I can not import them into After Effects in a PC, and they do not open in QuickTime Player.
I would like to edit these clips using Final Cut Studio in my macbook pro. Is there any way to convert these files to .mov???
    Thanks for any input/suggestions.

  • Multiple movie files after import

    I'm ****** of!
Whenever I import a movie (TV-shows/Podcast/Music works great) to iTunes I get an extra copy on the disk. This occurs both if I drag-n-drop in iTunes or if I copy a movie the folder "Automaticly add to iTunes" in the iTunes media folder...
The movie is duplicated into two different folders with the exact same name and date/time. In each folder is a copy of the movie. If I delete on folder, both are deleted. If I look at the properties for each folder I get information that the size is equal to the original mp4-file. If I select both folders and look at properties I get twice the size of the original movie.
If I import a movie (TV-episode)and then change its property in iTunes to TV-show the movie is moved to the folder TV-shows and the problem describe abowe dosn't occur....
What the **** is going on!! I don't want to loose half my real diskspace to some virtual bug!! Please help me!!

  • KODAK V1253 HD .Mov Files Wont Import

I am new to iMovie however like most Apple apps it is seems pretty straight forward and easy to use.
However I am unable to import video created by my camera. It is in .MOV format. I am able to view it in iTunes, Quicktime, and iPhone.
When I try and import in using iMovie I can see it by browsing to my iPhoto or directly to a copy I created on the desktop. I click import and nothing happens.
Any idea what could be causing the problem? Am I missing something?

I also was able to import the video into iMovie 06'
As previously explained, the file is playback and conversion compatible with most QT applications. It is only that since iMovie '08 can edit several compression formats natively that it is not allowed to perform conversions. After all, if you want to edit in a H.264 to save source file space, you probably don't want iMovie '08 turning the file into a 13 GB/hour DV compressed file behind your back. In addition, if you can avoid converting the video track and thus maintain its original quality, wouldn't you want to do so. (I.e., using the "pass through" option described above does this.) The basic rule here is, if iMovie '08 can't edit the file as is, it won't import it. At least this approach keeps you from wasting your time importing files only to find that you can't do anything with them once they are imported. You just have to learn the difference between what can be only watched, what can be watched and converted, and what can be watched, converted, and edited. Different compression formats have different characteristics yet for some reason people seem to think all forms of video are created equal.

  • Disabling "move files when importing" with Adobe Premiere Elements

I want pictures/videos to stay in file location when importing them into Adobe Premiere Elements (I use Adobe organizer) as I also use the files in Adobe LIghtroom. The respective option cannot be disabled in the import dialogue.

    idogu
Could you elaborate on what you are doing and the problems that you are running into?
What version of Premiere ELements and its Elements Organizer are you using and on what computer operating system is it running.
My problem in understanding your question involves the following thoughts.
When you import files into Premiere Elements or its Elements Organizer, the originals remain at the computer hard drive save location. The program has just thumbnails of the files, and those thumbnails need to trace back to the originals at the hard drive save location. Is the problem in a shortcoming of the Lightroom program?
We will be watching for clarification.
    Thank you.

  • How can Photoshop Organizer move files on import?

This has been a problem and I can find no source to answer this.
When we import pictures, lets say from a flash memory card, Photoshop Elements Organizer will copy the file from the flash drive, and create directories on my hard drive to organize the pictures.  In our case the import puts the pictures into folders based on the date of the picture.
This is real nice and no problem here.
However, I have copied to my hard drive a folder of pictures that I want Photoshop Organizer to do the same thing to.  COPY the files from the folder, create directories to organize the pictures.  Just like it would do for the flash drive.
But Photoshop Elements insits on leaving the files where they are.  How can you tell the import program that I would like it to COPY the files as it does for the memory card?  There is a box on the "get from file and folders" selection that says "copy the file" but that selection is grayed out.
Please help, since the only other way I can think to do this is to copy the files to an USB drive and hope that Elements would do the COPY and build up the directories.
I am thinking there is something simple we are missing here.
Thanks in advance for your help, it is appreciated.
    Bernie

Juergen, thanks for the quick response.
Well it sounds like what I thought.  I am trying to figure out how Elements knows the difference between a hard drive and an flash card.  They are both removable media.  As you suggest putting the pictures on a flash card just to import them would take a long time.
Any idea on how it can tell the difference between a flash card that looks like a disk drive and a USB disk drive that looks like a disk drive?
After that I am just going to have to go along with the "not moving image files" on the hard drive.  I hope the folks at Adobe some how add this feature.
If you find out anything on this let me know.
    Thanks again.

  • Problems importing .mov file

I am all of a sudden having problems importing .mov files from my camera in iPhoto '08. Can't get them to import in Image Capture either...On the import preview screen, all that comes up are empty "boxes". If I highlight one of the boxes, it shows that it is .mov file, the size of the file, etc. but if i try to do the import, iPhoto just locks up.

iPhoto does not like very large movie files for importing directly from the camera. If you get it on the desktop you should be able to import it. I've imported 200MB movies with no problem.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • MOV files won't Import in Premiere Pro 1.5

    Hi
    I just got a Zodak zi8.
When I try to import the MOV files, the importer reports a "generic error".
It doesn't matter the quality of video I shoot.  HD, 720 60 frames, 720 30 frames.  It doesn't read it.
They play in Quicktime, they play in Windows Media.
They just won't register in Premiere Pro 1.5.
I'm using a Toshiba Satelite, Windows 7 plenty of memory and ram.
I searched through the forums, but found no answers.
Can I not use these files in Premiere?
    Thanks!

I believe that those MOV files are using the H.264 CODEC. You will need to have that installed (comes with later versions of Apple's QT), but even then, might not work in PrPro 1.5. I just do not recall if it supported H.264.
For a bit more background on file formats, this ARTICLE might be useful. For a bit more on CODEC's in general, this ARTICLE might be useful.
Good luck, and hope that PrPro 1.5 does handle H.264.

  • Only certain .mov files imported from iphoto into imovie

I've been a MacBook owner for one week. When I first transferred over my photos into iPhoto, most of the .mov movie files were imported into iMovie. The problem is that the remaining movie files still in iPhoto were taken with the same digital camera and are .mov files, but I can't get them to import into iMovie!?!? There are about 5 movies still hanging out in iPhoto that I desperately want to get into iMovie...can anybody offer me any advice?
    Thanks for your time.
    Melissa

MOV file are containers. If the compression formats contained in the the MOV are not "edit" compatible, iMovie '08 will not import them. Some digital cameras use different compression formats for different video clip modes. Your best approach at this point is to open the files that will not import to iMovie '08 in the QT Player and check their audio and video compression formats in the "Inspector" window. (And if you compare them with the files that did import, you may get an idea as to what the specific problem may be.) For instance, an MPEG4/AAC file would normally import (as long as the MOV container does not contain a "Tween" track) while an MPEG4/µ-Law 2:1 file will not because the µ-Law audio is not editable.

  • Only some .MOV files import?

    Hi everyone,
I'm having a bit of trouble. I have installed Quicktime to get the .MOV files to import - and it reads them, but only SOME of them. Which is weird. There are 24 .MOV files in total - and 9 of them are showing as audio files only.
    Any ideas?
I have cleaned my temporary folders. Closed and re-opened the project. Started a new project. Moved the .MOV files to different locations. Uninstalled then reinstalled Quicktime and the same thing each time?
It's always the same files that show up as audio only. Really weird.
    Can anyone advise please?
    Best wishes,
    Nathan

  • Import .MOV files into iMovie 09

Hi all. I have three .MOV files to import to a new iMovie Project (to join them together into one .MOV) The first is an After Effects output.MOV which imports just fine. The other 2 are products of iMovie itself - exports to Quicktime.
When I go to Import Movies - the 2 quicktime exports are greyed out and unavailable to import. The After Effects file is fine. Appleman - Tom W if you're there please advise or indeed anyone at all. It is most irritating. Thanks for reading

While an irritation I have discovered a two work a rounds. (Please note that I am using a PPC Mac)
    I have iMovie 06, 08, and 09.
I bought a new AVCHD camcorder and my PPC Mac will not do anything with them. Fortunately I wisely bought a camcorder that self converts the AVCHD into .MOV files. At least I thought it was wise.
I found out that neither iMovie 08, or iMovie 09 will import these .MOV files. I tried Quicktime Pro and Perian and had no luck.
    Now for the irritating part.
iMovie 06 has absolutely no problem importing these .MOV files at all. 06 happily converts them and imports without any fuss at all.
Problem is, you must install iMovie 06.
    The installer is the irritation.
The installer replaces ALL your iLife apps when you do an install. While this is not a major problem if you wish to use iMovie 06/iLife 06, it is a problem if you wish to use iMovie 08 or 09 because iMovie 06 is then replaced by the installer.
Here's what you do. Make a folder in your Applications folder and place iMovie 06 app into the folder then do an install of iLife 08, or 09. The installer does not see iMovie 06 and does not replace it during install.
You will then have iMovie 06 AND iMovie 08, or 09. (all other iLife apps will be overwritten and that's just fine)
iMovie 08, and iMovie 09 WILL import iMovie 06 files. Poof, you now have access to .MOV files.
The other methods are to convert the .MOV files to .DV files with Quicktime Pro or.... most effectively, Toast 9 with HD/BD plugin or Toast 10 Titanium Pro.
Toast is very effective and makes the need for iMovie 06 or Quicktime Pro a non requirement AND best of all converts AVCHD to .DV directly. (also makes other handy conversions AND works with Intel Macs)
This takes some time and space, so be patient. (for example, an AVCHD file triples in size when converted to .DV or .MOV)
iMovie 08, and 09 imports these .DV conversions without any trouble at all.
Bottom line is that the best option is to convert .MOV to .DV
If you an Intel Mac and an AVCHD camcorder then you likely don't have any of these troubles.
Problem solved albeit irritating since the obsolete iMovie 06 program actually performs more video file compatibility tasks than than the new iMovie program.
It's a mystery to me as to WHY?
