Move files without command key

Hi there. I use two partitions on my iMac: one for the system and another one for the data. When I move files from de desktop to the data partition I have to use CMD key in order to MOVE but COPY the files. Is there any way for the system to consider the second partition al local and avoid using CMD key? Thanks.

So your User account is on the System partition, but you have another partition just for "data"...?
If you had your User account on the data partition, then you wouldn't have this problem. You can move the location of the user account in System Preferences > Users & Groups. Right click on the user and you get "Advanced Options", which includes the location of the user home. You'll need to copy the user folder to the data drive, so that when you next boot, the domain is there waiting for the OS to find.
Note that if the OS can't find the new location, it will create an empty user account at the default location. ("Where have all my files and prefs gone?)
Of course, another way would be to put everything: system, user, data: on one partition. Such partitions offer little benefit, and inevitably are an artifical self-imposed constraint that will constrain you.

Why can't I move files without getting the message that it needs to authenticate?  Just upgraded to new iMac with Lion 10.7.4.
    Thank you!

Repairing the permissions of a home folder in Lion is a complicated procedure. I don’t know of a simpler one that always works.
Back up all data now. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore your system to its present state
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    chmod -R -N ~
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. When a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appears below what you entered, it’s done. You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:
    sudo !!
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
Next, boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the Recovery screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset the password.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

  • Help...Move files without changing "date modified"?

I need to move files over from my old dead g4's hard drive to my intel mac book pro - but without altering the "date modified" in my documents and folders. I've pulled them over once, but all the files get tagged with the modification date I pull them onto the new hard drive.
Are there any utilities or software or tricks to do this?
Any help or direction will be appreciated.

    Robert Stover wrote:
When you say <source> is that just the name of the hardrive I'm pulling from "New 250" or is the down to the file level... <New 250>users>documents>tcpa-report.doc>
Terminal requires complete file paths in the UNIX style, using slashes between parts of the path. The root of all paths for files on mounted volumes is "Volumes" but if that is omitted the path defaults to the startup volume. Spaces separate command parts, so you must also "escape" spaces that appear in path names or they will be interpreted as command part separators. To escape a character, either precede it with a backslash ("") or enclose the entire part of the path in quotes.
So, assuming "New 250" is not the startup (boot) volume, the UNIX style path to "tcpa-report" would be:
    /Volumes/New 250/Users/Documents/tcpa-report.doc
If "New 250" is the boot drive, you could also use:
    /Users/Documents/tcpa-report.doc
Fortunately, you don't have to remember any of this if you use the drag & drop capabilities of Terminal. Type the command up to the place where you need to enter a path (including typing the space just before it). Then drag the item whose path you need from the Finder into the Terminal window & drop it there. The path will automatically be formatted, including any escaping needed.
If you need to follow one path with another, just type the single space that must separate them & drag the other file path into the window. Obviously, if the second path doesn't exist yet, you can't do this but you can drag the enclosing item into the window & type the final part of the path yourself. You can also use copy & paste within Terminal: copy by dragging across text with the pointer to highlight it, copy, then paste at the cursor.

  • Move tool issue : Command key + mouse dragging for moving any layer not working in PS CC

I'm trying to move a layer within the document by holding command key and mouse dragging (mouse cursor not above the layer) is not working at all while using move tool. Suddenly this functionality stopped working. Now I have to place my cursor on layer to be move and drag with mouse. Also pressing command key changing auto select option from layer to group.
    Please help.

Usually when a tool is not working as expected, a Reset of that tool might be the answer.
Select the move tool in the toolbox,
Go to the move tool icon on the top left of the screen (just above the toolbox in its' Option bar) and Ctrl-click on it to get the Reset menu.
    Click on Reset Tool.

  • Move tool and command key in photoshop 2014.2 is driving me mad

    Hi all,
I'm extremely frustrated with the new move tool in the 2014.2 update. I can no longer able to isolate a selected layer and move it about by holding down command key. Instead every time by holding down command key (while move tool is selected), it'll toggle between layer and group selection. So when you drag, instead of just moving the isolated layers, it'll toggle group and drag the entire group.
Does anyone know how can I revert this back to the good old days or how do I revert back to 2014.1 version.
    Many thanks

I was greeted with the same frustration this morning. Talked to a coworker and found a way around the update.
    Turn OFF auto-select (I know, it’s a bummer)
Command click layers on your canvas -OR- just select the subfolders and multiple layers in the layers palette.
Drag those selected multiple layers around (no need to hold any key down or aim mouse over layers)
To deselect layers, command click outside canvas
Looks like the update is forcing us to press “Command” PRIOR (instead of during) the move action. Hope it helps, coworker said not using auto-select prevent him to move things by accident.

  • Mpg to Mov Files without sound

I REALLY need to convert mpg files to mov files cause I need to use then with iMovie and FCP. But when I convert mpg to mov, the files are without sound. I'm using Quick Time 7. Are there anyone to indicate a solution or another converter app? I need mov files WITH sound.

I REALLY need to convert mpg files to mov files cause I need to use then with iMovie and FCP.
MOV is a file container. It can contain an valid combination of audio, video, text, 'Tween, Chapter, etc. data. What compression format do you want to edit in natively with iMovie or FCP?
But when I convert mpg to mov, the files are without sound.
The MPG file container normally contains audio and video data multiplexed as interspersed blocks of data in a single stream to provide spatial synchronization of audio and video. QT is based on parallel tracks of audio and video synchronized temporally. Since QT can only demultiplex and convert one track of data, it is programed to convert the video and leaves the audio out of the new file. As was previously indicated, if you wish to retain audio, you will have to use an MPEG based application. MPEG Streamclip is free and considered by most QT users to be both reliable and a standard by which other such apps are judged.
When I use that I got a file just with sound and no image. What I supposed to do?
Once again we return to the primary question of what compression format you want to edit in natively in iMovie or FCP. Most people choose DV/DV or AIC/Uncompressed but other options include Photo JPEG, Motion JPEG, MPEG-4, or H.264 with any edit compatible audio compression format. As an FCP, pro codecs are also available depending on your specific needs or wants. The compression codecs you wish to use will, in the end, determine which MPEG Streamclip conversion option you select and what settings are available.

  • Move files without locking down edits

In LightRoom 5 when I try to move image files (or sub-folders) to another folder I get a message that, if I continue, I will not be able to undo any changes made prior to the move. I take this to mean that moving the file will lock down any edits so that I cannot revert back to my unedited RAW file if I wish. Is this correct? If so, is there a way to move the files without locking down current edits?

I think that message is a bit ambiguous and refers to file locations, not edits. In fact if you copy folders first using your computer OS, you can safely update the folder location, without seeing the message and before deleting to tidy up the OS. It’s generally felt to be a safer method – see fig 8 on the attached link. Why not give it a try.

  • How to get self-contained .mov files without FCE opening up?

    Hi all experts,
I have fully rendered my first file, which is a simple text animation.

  • Move files without pressing down the trackpad in Lion

I just got my new 13" Macbook Air but can't move files (or windows) by "double clicking and holding" the way I could on my old Macbook Pro. In order to move something I need to press down the trackpad, or use three fingers on it. Did Apple remove this option with Lion or how do I make it work?

BEAUTIFUL!!!! HERE IS A MORE SIMPLER APPROACH
If you want to reactivate the classic double-tap-and-drag gesture, it's possible, but the option is well-hidden. Instead of being in System Preferences under Trackpad, it's actually under System Preferences > Universal Access > Mouse and Trackpad > Trackpad Options. Click the check box that says "Dragging" and you should be all set.

  • Cannot respond to alarms without command key

When I receive a reminder, and I click on one of the three options, the reminder does not respond. The only way I choose done, snooze or "go to" is by holding down the command key and clicking on the selection. I never had this problem before. It started a few months ago.

    I think I've found a solution - by accident.
Go to the Accounts panel in the system preferences and selected login items. Then delete iCalAlarmSchedular. Restart the computer and then launch iCal. It will reinstall iCalAlarmSchedular. You may need to restart the computer again, I'm not sure. Make a test event with an alarm to try it.
It seems to work so far.
As always, make sure you have a backup of your computer before attempting anything like this on your Mac.

  • Move files without cloning

    Dear all,
I have my dev instance files on single disk like
    /d02/oracle contains prodora,prodappl,prodcomn,proddb,proddata..
Now disk is competely filled.. I have to move the application related files to /d03 which has lot of space.. If I do cloning, I have to change the port no..etc.. I want the user to be given the same URL ..
    any suggestions and ideas
    Kai

before step 1 you should run
adpreclone.pl appsTiershutdown the application (conditionally the database too, if you want to copy/move db files as well)
    make sure everything is down
    copy/move application files
startup database and db listener (if you shut it down first, duh!;-)
adcfgclone.pl appsTierduring the questionnaire you will be asked a question whether to keep the current port settings. Respond Y to this question and your port settings will be kept.
    This should do the trick.
I personally would prefer doing it this way, because manually changing the contextfile can be a real pain. You easily overlook some parameters, or make typos. Running adcfgclone takes care of this for you.
    Good luck,

  • How do I crop .mov file without changing aspect

    Hi guys,
I'm looking to isolate a figure on blue screen into exactly 350 x 400 pixels for placement in a cd rom program. I've been able to size it down to 498 x 398 as a quicktime file, now I just need to crop a bit of the top and sides.
Sorenson squeeze crops but I don't want any compression on it. Final cut and quicktime won't crop, but change the aspect. Anyone know a good program for a mac (free) or a way to do cropping?
    Thanks!

    maven2 wrote:
It's actually getting distorted not in Final cut, but in Compressor when I tell it to output at 400 x 350.
then you'll need to go the other way, apply some squash to the FCP layer so it is flattened. when compressor messes with it, it will be unsquashed.
The distortion is probably entering your workflow in the original footage which has been captured one way (maybe as square pixels), flagged in the camera to be pulled/stretched out to 16x9 (as horizontal pixels), then you've brought it into a different aspect ratio sequence and exported it (as square or vertical pixels) but Compressor is probably seeing original PAR flag.

  • How can I get iPhoto 9.5.1 (902.17) to import .mov files?

I have a brand new MacBook Pro with 2 TB SDD running Mavericks that I bought 2 weeks ago.
So far I have imported about 5,000 photo files into iPhoto 9.5.1 (902.17) plus about 25 videos as .mov files.
But on today's import session, it stopped taking any more MOV's, giving the following error message:
"The following file could not be imported. The file is in an unrecognized format." and it then it lists the .mov files.
I tried rebuilding the LIbrary index, and have even tried creating a new Library and importing my smalles (12 Mb) .mov file to this new test library.
But I keep getting the same error.
I have the most recent version of all the software (i.e. no new updates are available.)
    What else can I do?

I figured out a solution: The drive with the .mov files was a USB drive formatted as NTFS. iPhoto would import .JPG files from this OK, but would refuse to import .MOV files, giving the error noted above.
I found that if I copied the files from the NTFS USB drive to an SD card or to the Macbook Pro's internal SDD, I could get iPhoto to import the .MOV files without any problem.
Why does iPhoto 11 have a problem importing .MOV files from external USB drive formatted as NTFS, but no problem importing the exact same files from an SD-card formatted as FAT-16, or from a folder on the Macbook Pro's internal HD?

  • .MOV file unreadable in QuickTime

    Hi!
I am trying to open and read a .mov file on my computer (late 2008 2.4 Ghz Macbook running the latest Snow Leopard) and QuickTime X won't open it, telling me that it's not a format recognised by QuickTime and that I might have to download additional softwares to read it. I have tried to open the file with QuickTime 7, VLC, Final Cut Express 4, and iMovie 09 as well. I have Perian and Flip4Mac installed. Nothing works. QuickTime seems to open other .mov files without any problem.
I have checked the Info of the file and it's an HD video (1920x1080) with MPEG-2 Video, Linear PCM and Timecode as codecs.
I have thought that the MPEG-2 Playback codec could solve the problem but it seems to be for Quicktime 7 and l'm pretty sure the file could be read with QuickTime X on the original Mac Pro, though on this point I might be mistaken.
The file was transferred from a Mac Pro to my Macbook through a Western Digital My Passport (FireWire 800 and USB 2.0) external hard drive. Could the hard drive possibly have corrupted the file in one way or another? What I found odd was that the file was "locked" (with a padlock on the icon) on the hard drive and when transferred on my computer. I can unlock it in Info but I don't understand why it was locked, was it already like that on the original computer, is it something the hard drive does, and most importantly, does it have anything to do with me not being able to read it with QuickTime?
Anybody knows something that can help? Thanks!
    Message was edited by: alxndralb

It doesn't. I think the problem is that i had FileVault on when the files were backed up to the Western Digital external drive. I needed to turn FileVault off because my account had reached its maximum space and I needed to raise the level. The files were backed up in encrypted mode to the WDD, then I had to delete them off the MacBook to free up space on my account to turn FileVault off (freakin stupid thing to do but that is what was required). Once FileVault was off, i tried to restore those files and now they are unreadable.
So my assessment is that they are still encrypted, but the computer doesn't know how to deencrypt to open them. Talk with Apple service today and they weren't sure if turning FileVault back on would allow me to deencrypt the files on the WDD. I tried it, nope. didn't work.
So I am stuck with 5 months of videos of my toddler son that are on my backup, but no way to bring them back in a readable format. Hence my "slightly" panicking state.
What doesn't make sense is that if you have FileVault on and you are backing up your files to an external and they are encrypted, shouldn't you be able to restore them if your computer crashed and you had to reset everything, including FileVault? So far, all the answers are "don't know, you could be screwed."
    Thoughts???
