  • How do I move images in iPhoto '08?

Recently, when I uploaded digital images from my camera to iPhoto, some of the images were in a different order from the order on the camera. I have been unable to move the images into the proper order. I remember being able to move images in albums in past versions of iPhoto. If it is possible to move photos in iPhoto '08, how do I do it?

To sort photos manually you need to be in the Photo view of the Library and need to have event titles turned off
This only changes the order in this view - in event view they still will be in date-time order according to the EXIF data from the camera
If something is out of order you can change the date/time of the photo witht he change date function - or you can split events into multiple events if different things are mixed together and then in photo view with event titles turnd on you can easily move photos between events

  • How do I move back photos from an external drive (but iPhoto library on Mac hd) to the Mac HD without reimporting all images again in iPhoto?

    The following scenario:
    Mac HD: iPhoto Libary
External HD: all photos which are shown in iPhoto
now I want to copy back the photos from the external HD to the mac hd and I want iPhoto to know the new location of all these photos (couple of 10 thounsands)
How do I do that without reimporting all images again into iPhoto
    Thanks

do you have a default "managed" library (the iPhoto preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library is in its checked state) or referenced library (you have unchecked that option)
    What version of iPhoto?
    Do you have Aperature 3.3?

  • I would like to move my photos in iPhoto to my NAS?

I would like to move my photos in iPhoto to my NAS.
Some state simply drag and drop it then point iPhoto to the new Location
quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive
    Some say it isn't possible.
Unless the NAS is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) you will not be able to run the iPhoto library on it
I am not particularly fussed about other users seeing it, I just want it off my iMac?  I am using iphoto 9.5.1.  its a synology DS213J NAS.
    thanks,
ooops think i am in the wrong section, if someone can move it then great. apologies.

for anyone else reading this, this is what I was told in the other forum.
iPhoto is problematic with referenced original files, because iphoto has no tools to recover from broken references, but Aperture has been designed to handle referenced images and libraries distributed across several drives well and has tools to fix broken references.
But both, iPhoto and Aperture, are not network databases.
Apple says:  Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library
Putting your originals on a network storage will make Aperture slower, and you are risking library corruption by transmission errors. The safest and option, and the solution with the quickest access to your original files will be a directly connected drive.

  • How do I move the photos in iPhoto to Lightroom ?

How do I move the photos in iPhoto to Lightroom?  Thanks, I am a novice to Lightroom.

To access your Mac iPhoto images for use in Photoshop and Lightroom
    1. In the Finder, navigate to Users > [user name] > Pictures > iPhoto Library.
    2. Control-click (Right-click) the iPhoto Library file and choose Show Package Contents.
    3. A Finder window opens that shows the contents. The Masters folder (or called Originals folder) contains all of the photographs that are in iPhoto.
Photoshop cannot access this folder, but if you make a duplicate of the folder, the dupe will be accessible -- so:
    4. Control-click (Right-click) the folder named Masters (or Originals) and choose Duplicate.
    5. Drag the duplicate folder which is named "Masters copy" or “Originals copy” from the iPhoto Library Finder window to the Desktop.
    6. Open images in Photoshop or Lightroom from the file on the desktop.
    or
    7.  Rename the folder and move it elsewhere (probably to the Pictures folder), if desired.
Then access the files in the folder via Lightroom and Photoshop

  • Why won't Front Row play movies located in my iPhoto Library?

I currently have a little over 300 short movies from my digital cameras. I keep them in subfolders located at /Users/shared/Shared Movies/digital camera movies/ and Front Row plays them just fine under each user account since each user has an alias to /Users/shared/Shared Movies/ located in their "movies" folder within their home folder.
Recently a buddy convinced me to import my short digicam movies into iPhoto as an easier way to organize the short .mov and .avi files. I have over 14K image files in my library so I liked the idea of browsing my video shorts using iPhoto. I created a smart album in iPhoto for all file names ending with .avi or .mov and that works great to quickly locate the relatively few video files in the sea of digital stills.
BUT... WHY won't Front Row locate or play the movies that are located inside of iPhoto's Library? Did they just forget this functionality? Front Row's Video player displays Video Podcasts located in iTunes why wouldn't there also be an automagic category that appears in Front Row for movies located in your iPhoto Library?!
Front Row chokes if I attempt to play the smart "movies" album I created in iPhoto. It just keeps spinning the little "train tracks" progress thingy and never shows a movie. I finally just hit the menu button on the remote to "back out" of that selection.
The other work around I tried to play these movies located in iPhoto was a smart folder located at /Users/shared/Shared Movies/ that displays filenames that contain .mov and .avi located in my iPhoto library folder. This doesn't work. Front Row's Video player will not display the movies found by a smart folder the same way it does for an alias to a folder or file.
I don't want to keep duplicate copies of these movie files on my HD. I'll have to keep them located outside of iPhoto so I can enjoy browsing and watching them "on demand" using Front Row.
What is the fix? Work around?

Thanks for the suggestion but that isn't an option. Think about how iPhoto stores images and movies you import into the photo library. It will import files originally located in one folder and scatter them by storing all the files in hundreds of folders and subfolders based on date. Originally I had my movies in my home movie folder and even used an alias to the shared movies. That all works fine and it isn't the issue. The issue is when you try to use the only tool Apple provides to organize your digital images, both still and moving pictures. Once you import your movies into the iPhoto Library they become invisible to Front Row's video player.
Once iPhoto imports my 300+ files and scatters them into hundreds of subfolders based on the date -how in the world would you even begin to maintain aliases in a folder that point to these files. That is NOT an option, who would do that?! That is why I decided to try the smart folder since it would dynamically locate all the files with .mov and .avi in the file name located within the iPhoto library. Good idea but Front Row will not play these files listed in the result set of a smart folder. It will follow an alias but not play the contents of a smart folder.
Front Row should handle movie files within the iPhoto library the same way it deals with videos within the iTunes library. Poor design, oversight, bug, whatever -it should be fixed. There should be an automatic category that appears under the Front Row video player for "Movies in iPhoto" and if you have no movies in your library it displays something like it does when you have no video podcasts, or no TV shows, or no music videos in iTunes. Come on, how many users have those items vs. an iPhoto library with movies from their digital cameras? I bet more users have movies from their digital cameras that currently drop through a gaping hole in the design of Front Row if they use iPhoto to manage their digicam movie files.

  • Can't move image files within Bridge

I recently bought an iMac and got the CS5 license transferred over to the Mac platform. Got CS5 loaded and everything works except for one critical thing: I can no longer move image files within Bridge. When I do the right click on an image file to select that command, the command is "grey" and won't let me to choose it.  So I am forced to rearrange my image files through the Mac's Finder/Pictures feature.  Drag and drop doesn't work either.  I have looked everywhere for a setting that would allow movement of files to different folders and rearrangement within Bridge, and can't find one.  I have Bridge set as my default for photos and not the lame iPhoto program on Macs.  I previously was to be able to freely use Bridge for organizing my photos on a PC and now sorely disappointed that I can't do this with my new iMac.

I previously was to be able to freely use Bridge for organizing my photos on a PC and now sorely disappointed that I can't do this with my new iMac.
No need for disappointment because you can move all files freely within Bridge.
First check if you have read and write permissions for your files/folders/disk (try move the files using finder) If Finder allows you to drag the files to the location you previously wanted in Bridge then the problem lies in Bridge.
First select a file and with right mouse click menu choose purge cache for selection. If the problem is gone you could do so for the whole folder using menu tools/cache/purge cache for folder while having Bridge pointed to that folder.
If not restart bridge holding down option key and choose reset preferences.
    could you report back?

  • I have Iphoto library in Aperture.  Can I move the projects from iPhoto to aperture project by dragging?

I have Iphoto library in Apeture.  Can I move the projects from iPhoto to aperture project by dragging (within the apeture program)? Is this making a duplicate of all the photos? It seems to work??  It then leaves my Iphoto library in apeture empty.  I would like to do this just to reorganize the photos between the two.  I feel that I may have doubles and would like all pictures of one year in same project in Aperture instead of going between both.

Tell us more, please. I am not quite sure, what you want to do and how you are using Aperture and iPhoto?
Which versions of Aperture and iPhoto are you using?
Do you have separate photo libraries for Aperture and iPhoto, or are you opening your iPhoto libraries in Aperture?
I have Iphoto library in Apeture.
Did you import an iPhoto library into Aperture?  And now you are seeing a section "iPhoto Library"  in the Aperture projects list in the Inspector?
Events and albums you imported from iPhoto (Import > Library > Some iPhoto Library) will be imported as Aperture projects and albums, and they will behave exactly as other Aperture projects and albums.
Can I move the projects from iPhoto to aperture project by dragging (within the aperture program)? Is this making a duplicate of all the photos? It seems to work??  It then leaves my Iphoto library in apeture empty.
You can drag images from any project in Aperture to other projects and that will move (not duplicate) the images and all its versions to that project. And when you drag all images from the project to another project, the remaining project will be empty and can be deleted.  (Caution: Photos that you have hidden in iPhoto will not be visible in Aperture. If you are not sure, if you have hidden photos, open the library again in iPhoto and unhide all photos).
I feel that I may have doubles and would like all pictures of one year in same project in Aperture instead of going between both.
There should be no problem with moving all photos from the same years to the same projects. You can also drag projects in "Projects" view on top of each other. That will merge them.
You could also define smart albums in Aperture to search for images taken at a specific period of time:
File > New > Smart album:
Then, in the Smart Settings HUD, click "Add Rule" and add a Date or Calendar rule.
For example, to find all images taken in 2010, use a rule "Date > Capture Year is > 2010"
To search for Photos taken at a specific date or at several dates, use a "calendar" rule. This way, you do nat have to type the date, but can pick it from a mini calendar.

  • How do I move emailed photos to iPhoto with Lion? I've lost the drop down option.Karen

How do I move emailed photos to iPhoto using Lion? I've lost the previous drop down option.
    Thank you, Karen

There are multiple ways. I am not at my Lion machine at the moment, so I am not sure I can remember them all, but here is one: Click on the "Details" button in the upper right corner of the message. If there are image attachments, the drop down menu should appear.
Or, try right click on the image. I think I saw "Add to iPhoto" in the contextual menu.

  • Recently added photos/movies missing after closing iPhoto '09

I have iPhoto '09 (8.1.2 (424) running on an Intel iMac Core (1) Duo with Snow Leopard, all software updates current. Tonight I went to add several photos and movies to my iPhoto library (19,000+ photos). They imported fine. I moved some around with respect to events, fixed some dates, but did no photo edits. Then I closed iPhoto. When I opened it back up, all of the recently added photos were gone. The "Last Import" said "(0)". I found the photos/movies sitting in my iPhoto library in the file structure and could open them up and view them with Preview or Quicktime, respectively. But iPhoto didn't know they were there. I tried to drag and drop them into iPhoto again and it wouldn't let me, saying they are already in the library. I was able to reimport from the original location on my desktop and after closing and re-opening, same thing, no photos in iPhoto but another copy of them in the "iPhoto Library package > Originals > 2011 > ..."
This is repeatable. I can delete the folders I added then reimport and after closing and re-opening, nothing. I've rebuilt the library 2 times using command+option with all options selected except "rebuild from automatic backups." I can drag just one image into iPhoto from the bunch and it disappears to after a close+reopen. I have not yet tried to do a camera-based import. These are files on my desktop.
Lastly, I think this may be a red herring, but I just recovered from a HD crash last week. I got a new HD installed by professionals and did all the new installs to Snow Leopard and restore from my time machine backups myself. Everything looks/works like it did before the crash, except one of the user's (4 of us on this machine) desktop was missing their background pic and had to re-add it. All the other user's desktop pics were fine. This desktop pic was associated with the iphoto library I'm having the problem with. I just realized after talking with my wife that all the pictures she has added since the crash have had the same behaviour and are sitting in the iphoto library package but are not in the iPhoto library "viewer" when iPhoto is open.

    The Library database is corrupted.
Best option: restore from back up. Otherwise:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • I am trying to move my wife's iPhoto '08 library to my new iMac for iPhoto '11.

I am trying to move my wife's iPhoto (2007) library on a Macbook to my new iMac for iPhoto '11.  First, when I opened iPhoto on the iMac it asked me to create a library, which I did.  Then I imported her photos via a wireless network to my "new" library.  However, when it finally finished importing, it had imported 3 copies of each photo from her library.  I deleted the "new" library and started over.
Second, I opened iPhoto on the iMac and chose to use "other library."  I chose my wife's shared iPhoto library and it began transferring the photos to the new iMac (or so I thought).  This worked beautifully as it only brought over single photos and not 3 copies like discussed above.  After editing the new library and adding some photos from an old PC, I shut down iPhoto.  A few hours later I tried to open iPhoto on the iMac and it gave me the opening screen again with choices to create a new library or use a different library.  As it turns out, my wife's Macbook and been disconneted from our wireless network.  I was able to figure out that that unless my wife's Macbook is connected to the network then I cannot access the iPhoto library on my iMac.  I was under the impression that I had copied her library to my computer and that the photo files were now on the hard drive of the iMac.  So when her computer is offline I can no longer access the imported library.  I want her library to stay on the iMac as we plan to sell her Macbook.  As you now know, we cannot access her iPhoto library on the Macbook since she is running an older version of iPhoto.
So, what I would like to do is to completely transfer the photos from her Macbook to my new iMac and be able to access them on the iMac regardless of whether she is on the network or not because we plan to sell her Macbook to a friend.  Thank you for any help you can provide.

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
and select the Library that you moved.  That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
Your first option didn't work because you imported one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
Your second option didn't work because you simply referenced her library on the old machine.

  • Can't MOVE images from one project to another: must not understand

    Greetings,
I have two questions as a result of aperture not working the way that I have read on forums etc. and am wondering what i am doing wrong
    1) How do I MOVE images from project to project without duplicating masters or versions
    2) how do I delete versions
All of my files are referenced.
*1) moving from project to project*
I have a blue folder called "NEFs." In it, I have a default project where I just dump all of my images called "00 dump." After I dump them, I organize into other projects. So, I do the following:
    • I create a new project called "2008 Thanksgiving" inside the NEFs blue folder making it a sibling to "00 dump"
    • I go back to "00 dump" select all the images that were shot over thanksgiving, and drag to the "2008 thanksgiving" folder. The images transfer fine, but when I go back to "00 dump" I see that the images have NOT actually moved, they are now sitting in both projects. How can this be? I thought that if I move images from project to project then I am actually moving the master, not replicating a version? That leads me to my next dilemma
*2) how do I delete versions?*
Now that I have replicated photos in my "2008 Thanksgiving" project, I want to delete them since I see them still sitting in "00 dump." I do the following:
    • select the "2008 Thanksgiving" project
    • select a number of images
    • press command + delete (this is the only way to delete a file as far as I can tell
    • popup comes up explaining that if I delete this file it will delete the master too and the reference file. So, that's exactly what it does.
Deleting the referenced file is fine for many junk images, but in this case, I just want to delete the copied version that seems to be in two projects now. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I would really love a full understanding of how this structure works.
    -i

When you drag images and the drop target is an actual little yellow project box (not a folder, and album or anything else) the images move from one project to another, if your drop target is not the actual project but something else within another project all you do is cause the version to show up there, nothing is duplicated.
To delete a version or versions selected just use command-delete. This gets rid of the actual version not just removes it from the current album view. If it happens to be the last version of that master it will get rid of the master as well.
    Have a look at this:

  • How do I move 3741 photos in iPhoto on my iPad to iPhoto on my iMac?

How do I move 3741 photos in iPhoto on my iPad to iPhoto on my iMac?
My iMac lost all of the photos in the iPhoto library about 3 OSX updates ago (current system 10.9.1) but they recently appeared on my iPad. I have looked at all of the iphoto libraries on my iMac (3) and one contains 419 photos, one contains 3 photos and the main library has place holders with description information for 3741 photos but no photos. My iPad has all of the photos in iPhoto. How do I move them?

The answer is no. There is no originals (or masters folder) that I can find. Below are the following folders in iPhoto:
Events Folder: 71 place holders with decriptions including 6 recent photos
Photos Folders: 3741 Place Holders with descriptions
    Photo Stream: 1 photo
    Last 18 Months: 157 photos
    Last Import: 1 photo
    Cloud: 229 photos
1 Album: 3 placeholders with descriptions
    Slideshow: 1 placeholder with description
Many of the actual photos are recent and are duplicated in one of the abovefolders

If both have Firewire ports then you can accomplish your goal by using Target Disk Mode. If this is not possible then you can do using an external drive or if you have a local network connect both to your network and use filesharing between the two computers.
