Move iPhoto albums to OLDER version of iPhoto

For reasons I can explain, I would like to transfer my iPhoto library and albums from my intel laptop with iPhoto 6 to my G3 desktop with iPhoto 5 (which can't be updated).
I have tried several approaches from this forum and elsewhere, and get this message most of the time:
"The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data)"
I assume this is because they are from a newer version. Any suggestions?
iMac G3 (CRT)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   500 MHz, 512MB, PowerPC

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
No, it cannot be done. The v6 library is a very different structure than the v5, and v6 database files simply cannot be read by v5.
Two possibilities: Try iPhoto Library Manager which can be used to move pics between libraries (including metadata). Though I'm not sure if it will move between v6 and v5, it's certainly worth a shot.
Other wise, export from v6 and import into v5 is all I can suggest.

  • How do I open movies made with older versions of iMovie?

I have newer iMac with iMovie 10.0.02 and would like to open movies created with an older version of iMovie.  I was informed by the people at the Apple Store this could be done.  Does anyone know how?  In the end I would like to create high def copies that can be viewed on a Mac laptop.

    Hi
I was informed by the people at the Apple Store this could be done.
That depends up-on from what old iMovie version.
    - iMovie 1 to HD6 - is one program and it's evolution - Will Not be possibly to open with any other program.
    - iMovie'08 v.7 to iMovie'13 v.10.0.x - is a compleatly other product (wrongly named as iMovie in my opinion) - can open older files from this evolution. (Not from iM 1 - 6)
So it depends greatly from what version that You mean.
    Please tell.
    Yours Bengt W

  • I updated my OS from 10.6.4., to 10.8.2 I want to buy iDVD and I Movie, but bought iPhoto and can't get it to work yet.  Hesistant to buy the others without now having the original applications on my laptop. Do I need to buy the older versions first?

I updated my OS from 10.6.4., to 10.8.2.  I want to buy iDVD and iMovie, but I bought iPhoto and can't get it to work yet.  I'm hesitant to buy the others without now having the original applications on my laptop. Do I need to buy the older versions first?  They are probably on my Snow Leopard install disc, but I am now running Mt Lion that I bought, and downloaded a few days ago...so I don't want to insert the old OS disc, thinking it might want to reinstall the old OS...  Thanks,
    KathyH-P

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Where can I get an older version of iPhoto for an older reconditioned Macbook?

I have reconditioned Macbook 13" that is 5-6 yrs old-no iPhoto on it. How do I get a copy that works with Snow Leopard? It never came with iPhoto and I have no disks anyway. It came with Leopard which I then updated by purchase. The version I have is 10.6.8. I assume that's as far as it goes since my Software Updater would have prompted me otherwise. My memory is also updated to 4GB.
It can't be updated to Mountain Lion which I have no problem with. I just want to get iPhoto on it because my iPhone has no memory left and I want to move some  photos to my Mac system now. (and eventually I want to backup my photos as well that's another whole question). So I need the use of my computer system for all of this and my Macbook only has Preview to view pictures in. I can't install the current iPhoto and can't seem to locate where I can buy an older version that is compatible with my older system.
    Thanks.

The App Store version of iLife ‘11 programs will only work with 10.7 or 10.8. You can get the iLife ’11 DVD which will run on 10.6  on eBay fairly cheap.

  • I have applied a description to photos in iPhoto.  When I burn the CD, the description is not included.  I used to do this with an older version of iPhoto.  Am I doing something wrong?

I have been organizing my photos in iPhoto and have written descriptions for them.  In the past, with an older version of iPhoto, I would burn a CD.  When I would put the CD back in my computer, the description would also be on the CD.  Now, I am burning the CD's and there is no record of the description.  This is very important as I want the information stored with the photos, both for my own reference, but also if something would happen to me my family would know who are in the photos and what the occasions were.  Is there some way I can do this?  Any help would be much appreciated.  Thanks!

Ok, sorry!  I created an album with the photos I wanted to burn.  I gave them new titles, sometimes using batch change when appropriate, otherwise individually.  I then clicked on info and in the area labeled description I gave each photo a brief description.  When I was done, I went to Share and clicked on burn.  When prompted I inserted a blank CD-R in my external CD/DVD burner (which I need to use as my internal one has been replaced twice in less than a year and I was sick of spending $150.00 each time).  When it was loaded I clicked the burn button at the bottom of iPhoto.  When it was completed I reinserted it into the external CD/DVD burner/reader to see if it was successful.  The photos all came up with the new title in my iPhoto library.  When I click on info button, there is no description.  The information about the date and place where the photo was taken is there, just not the description that I personally included.
I have not tried exporting the photos to finder and then burning as they suggest doing if you want the CD to be readable on Windows program, but I never had to do that with my old iPhoto program, so did not know if that would make a difference.
I can't think of any other information you might need, but if I missed something let me know and I will try to include it.  Thanks for your interest in helping!

  • How do I restore an older version of iPhoto from App Store?

    Hello,
My MacBook Pro brok down and the hard drive was completely erased. Now I had a new hard drive and the OS X 10.7.5 was reinstalled, but my iPhoto and other iLife applications were gone. I followed this instruction below and did see iPhoto for me to accept. But I got a message saying that iPhoto can’t be installed on my computer "because Mac OS X version 10.9 or later is required." To avoid other complications, I don't want to upgrade to 10.9. What can I do to get my older version of iPhoto back? Thank you.
Restoring iLife applications after Internet Restore of OS X
If your computer came with OS X Lion or later and you erase your hard disk and install OS X, you can download iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand from the Mac App Store.
After installation, start (up) from OS X.
Double-click the App Store icon in the dock.
Enter your Apple ID and password.
    Click Purchases.
If you haven't previously accepted your bundled iLife applications within the Mac App Store, you should see your iLife applications appear in the Accept portion of the screen. Click Accept.
You may be asked for your Apple ID and password once again. Your iLife applications now move to the Purchased section. These applications are part of the software that came with your computer. Your account will not be charged for them. Click Install to complete installation of your applications.

    reinstall from the original source
    Could be
1 - the restore disks that came with the computer
    or
2 - the iLife DVD that you purchased
    or
3 - the app store - log in under the Apple id used to purchase the software or to set up the computer - look under purchases - you might have to unhide or accept the Application first

  • Reading iPhoto Libraries recorded under older version on CD

How can I read iPhoto Libraries recorded on CD-Rom under older versions of iPhoto. I have the latest version of iPhoto

When you insert the CDs in the optical drive and launch iPhoto doesn't the CD show up in the left hand pane in iPhoto under Shared?
It should.  If it does all you need to do is drag the photos/albums/events you want to import onto the Events icon above.
Those are not full libraries and must be viewed as shown above in the screenshot.  They can't be opened as a separate library with iPhoto.

  • I move iphoto albums to backup, now, how do I delete photos from iphoto on my hd?

It looks to me like once I move an album to my ext hd that the photos are not removed from my iphoto on my internal hd?  I want to free up space but only want to back up certain albums.

How are you moving them? Exporting does not remove material from iPhoto.
Why not have two Libraries, one on your internal drive, one on the external?
Here's one way to do what you want:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager

  • I downloaded some photos that were from an older version of iPhoto. i installed the application to upgrade. i opened iphoto,

I downloaded some photos that were from an older version of iPhoto,I was asked to  install the application to upgrade/. (Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete.) I clicked ok, & iphoto will  now  not open or close. It continues to search, even when I turn computer off & back on.  Please, HELP???  I NNED my photos!

Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - from the resulting first aid window repair permissions and if necessary rebuild your database

  • How do I move an album created on my iPhone to iPhoto?

I created an album on my iPhone recently to make it easier to navigate through my Camera Roll.  Is there a way to move that album (and the photos in it) to iPhoto?  I realize that iPhone albums are just subsets of the Camera Roll, and thus all the photos have in fact synched to my computer.  But the way I've grouped them together is the key... I'd like to avoid having to to re-create the album on iPhoto manually.  (It will take a long time and seems completely unnecessary.)
Can I do what I'd like to do?

Nope - hopefully in the future -
That is not a feature of iPhoto - suggest to Apple - iPhoto Menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback.

  • I just downloaded Ilife 9 and now my Iphoto doesn't open. The error message says: You cannot open your library using this version. Quit and use the older version. What can I do?

I just downloaded Ilife 9 and now my Iphoto doesn't open. The error message says: You cannot open your library using this version. Quit and use the older version. What can I do?

iLife '09 is not available as a download - it is only available as a purchase
iLife '11 is available as a DVD purchase and the compoments of it are available from the App Store (iPhoto '11 (version 9.1.5), etc)
Exactly what did you do? And exactly what does the error message say?
On the surface it appears that you are attemptying to open a new library with an older version (iPhoto '09 can not open an iPhoto '11 library for example)

  • New used computer doesn't have iPhoto so can't transfer pictures from old computer without upgrading new one. Is there a way to download an older version of iPhoto?

I can't access any of my iPhoto pictures from my old computer since the new (used) computer I got doesn't have it. The new one is a newer version but the applestore only has the iLife 11 which would need me to upgrade. I'm not against upgrading I really just want to access these photos. I used an external harddrive to store the pictures from my old computer and am assuming that the only reason they're not showing up on the new one is because it doesn't have the applicatin (makes sense).
Is there a way to get an older version of iPhoto?
The pictures from iPhoto that are on the external harddrive will show up if i had to the application right? Will they show up on a newer version of iphoto even though they're originally from an older version?
Ahh sorry if this is confusing I'm just really frustrated at technology right now..../////

Is there a way to get an older version of iPhoto?
I suggest you don't do that. There is no guarantee it will work right with a more recent OS.
Install the correct version of iPhoto for the version of Mac OS X you are running. (Which is what?) The folks here will tell you how to get to the Library on the external drive when you provide more info about your computer.

  • How do I download an older version of iPhoto for my early 2008 MacBook (which only supports through OS X 10.7 Lion)?

I recently restored my early 2008 MacBook and reinstalled Lion.  My timing is poor because Mavericks came out yesterday, so now all iLife stuff in the Mac App Store requires Mavericks.  But my old MacBook doesn't support anything later than Lion.  I had iPhoto before the restore... how do I track down an older version, which I have purchased and own?  Thanks for any help.

Contact the iTunes Store staff and see what they say. If you can't get help from them, buy an iLife 11 DVD from a source such as Amazon or eBay.

  • Is there an older version of iPhoto I can download to osx 10.4.11?

Is there an older version of iPhoto I can download to osx 10.4.11?

iLife 06 might run under 10.4 on an eMac. It's requirements are listed here: iLife '06: System Requirements.   Look for a copy of either at Amazon.com or eBay.com.
