Move iTunes to different drive

I want to put my large iTunes library on a different drive. It is internal. Any reason I can't just move it?

You can, but need to tell iTunes where to find it; this is done by launching iTunes with the Option key held down, clicking on Choose Library, and navigating to it.

How do I move iTunes from one drive to another? My c drive is full I changed my preferences to d, yet I still can not back up my iPhone or iPad. I think I need to move iTunes I am just not sure if I should uninstall from c and reinstall to d?  Any suggestions or help.
    Thank you
    Sue

Copy the entire iTunes folder from your music folder to D:\iTunes.
Click the icon to start iTunes and immediately press and hold down the shift key. Keep holding until asked to choose or create a library.
Click Choose and navigate to the file D:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl
Check the library is working properly.
Use the option File > Library > Organize Library > Consolidate Files to import any stay files to the new library folder.
Delete the old iTunes folder on the C: drive.
Ideally you will also backup this library to another drive.

  • Followed cnet direct. to move itunes from c drive to ext. drive, worked, deleted off c, still worked, now says AVFoundationCF.dll not found-reinstall, don't want to lose data

I recently followed cnet directions to move itunes from c drive on pc running xp pro, to external drive, for space reasons.  Process worked.  I tunes ran from e drive, verified data on e drive, deleted all apple applications on c drive so I could remove itunes and recover space.  Verified itunes still worked off of new short cut and and that target was e drive.  Now itunes won't open and get message "AVFoundationCF.dll not found - reinstall", or "not installed correctly Error 7 (windows error 126) - reinstall."  Tried download, install from apple.com for itunes on c drive, but message "library can't be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes."  How do I fix this without losing all of our "material" saved on the itunes program?

Thank you for the reply, but so far no go.  I tried through control panel and add remove programs with repair option as suggested but got error..."C:\programs......AppleAplicationSupport.msi cannot be found."  This was after I have done new download and install of itunes to the c drive.  I have not taken any steps to try use that down load or reload any material on it.  I changed path to external drive an folder, E:\ itunes and got the "error not valid installation package."  Still looking for answers...

  • If i move itune to external drive does time machine still have backup?

if i move itune to external drive does time machine still have backup?
I just moved my itunes off my macbook pro because it was taking up too much space and put it on an external hard drive. i have a second external hard drive that i use for time machine. when i update time machine next will my itunes files be removed from the backup since they are no longer on my internal hard drive (what time machine backs up?) basically, i want to make sure i have a second copy of my itunes besides the one on my first external hard drive and i was wondering if time machine will still have all of that data (on the second external hard drive).
i cant find this answer anywhere!!! thanks so much!!!

Check to see whether or not it's excluded in the Time Machine pane of System Preferences.
Items deleted from the hard drive won't be deleted from the backup until the backup location runs out of space.

  • Can i move itunes to another drive other than my c drive?

I use a smallish SSD drive for my os and a couple games, i was curious if there is away to move  itunes from the C drive to a Bigger storage drive and still be able to fully use it.  Just need more space for Itunes and it contents.
thanks for any help on the subject.

Niel's advice above will work better. Moving the entire library as unit and then connecting to it works, and makes the next move easy too. Moving the media alone and then editing the media folder location in preferences doesn't work reliably, and may leave the library with broken connections to the old paths that need to be repaired.
@Rockdwg: If you have any iOS devices you may also want to relocate the backup folder.

  • Moved iTunes to different drive - now my library is empty???

I should've left well-enough alone, but someone suggested I move my files to my second hard drive. I moved iTunes from C drive to F drive and changed the settings in my iTunes preferences; however, now my iTunes is empty. I moved them back to C drive, but still nothing. I can find the files when I look under C drive in my computer, but I can't get them to show up in my library.
    Any suggestions??

Set the location to what you need and then try the steps here:

  • Can't move iTunes to External Drive

    Hi there,
    Weird one...
Using a MacBook Pro 2.5Ghz Intel Core i5, running 10.8.5 copying on to a brand new Lacie external drive connected via lightning. Whenever I try to copy the itunes folder it stalls at different points, sometimes with (error code -36).
The iTunes folder is <150GB and the external drive is 1TB. I have repaired permissions, re-formatted the external drive, but simply cannot get this function happening.
Any tips would be most welcome!

Error -36 is an I/O error. Does your LaCie have mutliple connections available? I used to have one that was USB, FW400 and FW800. I usually ran it on FW400 but occasionally I'd have to switch it to USB to move large groups of files, for this same reason. It wasn't the drive but the FW400 bus on my MacBook.

  • C drive full - want to move itunes to D drive

    Hi,
my daughters C drive on her laptop is nearly full (only 5gb free). She would like to move her itunes library to the D drive, which is still practically empty.
Can anyone please advise how to go about moving her itunes from C to D drive, as seamlessly as possible.
We are depending on you geniuses out there.
    Thanks

I just moved my entire music folder to my c drive from my external using apples recommended method and this one worked much better. (thank you)Instead of just importing the xml file and the itl file, I moved the entire folder previously and even though I kept setting the itunes new location, as soon as the external drive was removed the tunes were not found. By coping the *.itl file and the *.xml file to the itunes folder ie; my music\itunes music folder
itunes actually found all the music and re-pointed to it using your hold down the shift key method. I renamed the previous itl and xml files to bakitl and bakitl just incase I wanted to revert. Thanks again for tip. cc

  • Preserve Aliases when move files to different drive

I have several folders and files that I want to move from my laptop's internal hard drive to an external hard drive. I also have several aliases for these files that I want to KEEP on the internal drive. Is there any way to MOVE the folders and files to the external hard drive while preserving the aliases, so that when I click on the laptop aliases they will open the external hard drive files? I already found a discussion that shows how to MOVE files to the external drive as apposed to copying, but when I did it (using command drag), the alias residing on my laptop no longer worked.

    Hi,
These scripts work, if the filename contains always three
words separated by a space, otherwise the file will not be moved.
The script will overwrite files that already exists in the destination folder.
Here's the script that uses a shell
set theFolder to "" -- drag/drop your folder between quotes
set destination to "" -- drag/drop the folder "folder importen letters" between quotes
do shell script "dest=" & (quoted form of destination) & "
    /usr/bin/find " & (quoted form of theFolder) & " -type f -maxdepth 1 \! -name '.*' -print0 | while read -d $'\0' f; do
    name=${f##*/}; folderName=${name%% *}; year=${name##* };
    if [[ "$year" = . ]]; then year=${year%%.*};fi
    if [ -d "$dest/$folderName/$year" ];then
    /bin/mv -f "$f" "$dest/$folderName/$year/$name"
    fi
    done"
or this script if you prefer the Finder
set theFolder to (POSIX file "") as string -- drag/drop your folder between quotes
set destination to (POSIX file "") as alias -- drag/drop the folder "folder importen letters" between quotes
    tell application "Finder"
repeat with tFile in (get files in folder theFolder)
set {folderName, t_year} to my getTheseNames(name of tFile)
if t_year is not "" then try
move tFile to folder t_year of folder folderName of destination with replacing
delete tFile -- because the command move, doesn't move on other volume, it duplicate
    end try
    end repeat
    end tell
    on getTheseNames(tname)
set oldTID to text item delimiters
set text item delimiters to " "
    try
    tell tname to set {t_base, t_end} to {text item 1, text item 3}
set text item delimiters to "."
set t_end to text item 1 of t_end -- text before the period = the year
    on error
    return {"", ""}
    end try
set text item delimiters to oldTID
    return {t_base, t_end}
    end getTheseNames

  • Best way to move iTunes to different user account

My wife and I share a computer and it has a separate user account for each of us. She got an iPod but set it up and synced it on my account instead of hers. That was not a problem until now. I got an iPhone and want to set it up and sync in my account. What folders and files do I need to move from My Documents/Music to hers? Or what would the best way to move her personalized Ipod settings, etc? Thanks.

  • Moving iTunes to a different drive

Ok folks, I have a partitioned drive, long story short, tried to move iTunes to my drive "D" following the Apple article right down to "Consolidate". Must of done someting wrong, now, when I go to iTunes it shows no songs, apps or movies, as if it was newly downloaded.  Checked the Preferences>advanced> tab it reverted back to the default folder in "C" drive.  I tried to copy the two library files into the folder, no luck.  What did I miss?  Thanks folks...

Hi tt2, thank you so much for that information, but too little too late I tried to move itunes back to it's original location on the C drive and am still trying to rebuild the library.  So the last point you made "shift open" was the step I missed.
So let's start over...my itunes folder was in C:\documents..., made a copy of it on an external HD, I moved it to D:\itunes, then moved it back from the external HD to C:\....  During the move process when I did try to point to the library file .itl to the D:\itunes it didn't show anything.  So, I'm thinking what didn't help was that most of my library was in a file that I acquired previously for my mp3 player, then imported to itunes. Now as I'm trying to rebuild again I tried to point to the .itl file and still have some songs that have exclamation marks beside them, which to me means that itunes reads the mp3 file from my other music directory.
So how do I get my playlists back is that through the llb.itl, or .xml files as well or in the other "playlist" files?
So in the meantime I'm going to continue to rebuild, and reorganize and start over, any help would be appreciated, (this is actually a good learning exercise, and next time I'm getting a 2t HD with no partitions)
    Thanks again,
    klouw

  • How do i move my itunes library to a different drive

i underestimated the space i needed for my itunes library. at the time, i thought 75gb is more than enought for my 60gb ipod, then the videos and movies came along. although i cannot put them on my 4th gen ipod, but i did downloaded a bunch of free tv shows and video podcasts.
i thought i was simply gonna delete some already-viewed files as i push the limit, but then the recycle bin on my ipod specific drive screwed up. i can no longer delete anything off that drive. since the partition i had earlier was kind small for my ipod drive, i think i want to reformat the drive to a different partition.
of course, i need to move my itunes library first. can someone please teach me how to move my itunes library to a different drive? thank you very much.

I'm getting a new boot drive (velociraptor) and want to keep it lean so want to move all my media to a different drive -- I know I can move the iTunes Library to a different drive and go into prefs and tell it (iTunes) where the music is, just wondering if there are any "gotcha's" by doing so or is it pretty straightforward...???

If all of your music is in the iTunes folder now, then you can just drag the entire iTunes folder (the entire folder, not just the iTunes Music folder) to your desired location. Then hold down the Option key while launching iTunes. You'll be given a dialog box where you can select the iTunes library you want to use. Navigate to and select the iTunes folder in it's new location. Everything - playlists, ratings, etc. - should remain intact and all future purchases and imports should go to the new location on the external drive. Once you're certain that everything is working as it should from the new drive, you can then delete the iTunes folder from your internal drive.
Caution, though: once you do this, if the new drive is an external unit, make sure the new drive is connected and mounted before launching iTunes. If the drive isn't mounted, iTunes will automatically switch back to using the default location on your internal hard drive and will of course show a blank library. This won't be a problem, though; just quit iTunes and relaunch using the Shift key and select the folder on the external drive once again.
