new computer,  want keep ipod music from old computer to new?

    Hi mtscott41,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you have music on an iPod from your old computer. You now have a new computer but do not want to have the music from the iPod erased when you sync to the new computer. If the music on your iPod was purchased from iTunes you can either transfer those purchases from the iPod to your new computer’s iTunes Library or you can download the previously purchased content directly to your iTunes Library from iTunes. Please use the following article as reference for transferring purchases.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer

The following article will show you how to download all of your previous purchases directly to iTunes if you would like to proceed this way.
    Download past purchases

If the music on your iPod was not purchased from iTunes and you still have the old computer, you may want to use a process called Home Sharing to transfer that content to your new computer. The following article explains Home Sharing.

    I hope this helps,

  • Transfer music from old computer to new.

Seems I cannot figure out how to transfer my songs from my old computer to new. I am on ITunes 7 on the old and new machine. I have tried export but it fails when the 2nd CD is asked for during Export. I have tried back-up but the new machine will not accept the CD. Any suggestions to an ITunes user who is suffering enough with switching computers?

    Hi yo-dt,
You can also use a portable Hard Drive, or an iPod to move your library successfully. Read the articles bellow:

  • How to transfer my music from old computer to new computer

I would liketo use home sharing to transfer all my music from itunes on my old computer to itunes on my new one. I have followed the steps for home sharing but my old itunes library will not show up in the side menu on my new computer. Both are windows computers

Does the old hard drive still work? You can buy an external hard drive case and transfer data to your new Macbook Pro and recover your itunes libary. As far as i'm aware, Apple have not created software or allow you to move music from ipod to Mac.

  • Transfering Music from old computer to new MBP laptop HELP!

I nees to transfer ALL of my iTunes music to my new MBP, can I just put all of my music onto a flash drive and then deauthorize that computer, then put songs from flashdrive on the MBP and authorize that computer? If I do this will my music still be organized like it was on my ild PC? Like album name, artist, title, etc? Answer ASAP please and thanks in advance!

Okay. What do you want from this process? Do you want iTunes to appear exactly as it did on your old computer?  The way I have described several times before tells you how to do this.  Copy the WHOLE ITUNES FOLDER from your Finder (you do not say what source computer) or Windows browser or whatever, to the flash drive.  Drag it from the flash drive to your new computer and replace the iTunes folder on the new computer (I presume you have nothing in it now).  Start iTunes and everything will appear identical to your old computer.  Playlists, artwork, everything.  Three major steps. Drag, (move flash drive to other computer), drag, open iTunes.
The video tells you in a somewhat long-winded (and in my opinion not necessarily best) way to end up copying just your media files to a flash drive.  It then adds them all back into iTunes where if all works well iTunes will end up processing them as though it has never seen them before. If that's what you want, fine, because that's what it does.  If the tags are correct on the files you will see the names, etc., but with the qualifiers I mentioned before.  You say you want them organized like they were on the old computer.  For most people this means ratings and playcounts and playlists.  That is not what you will get if you drag just media from drive to drive via the flash drive.  You will only accomplish that using the whole folder method I have described.  If you do not want your old playlists well, I guess you can do the video method, but even then my method is easier and you can always delete unwanted playlists.
The video method is essentially the same process if the source computer is a Mac, again if your goals is to start over with a fresh library but your old media files.

  • Moving music from old computer to new computer

I recently purchased my MacBook Pro and I am trying to move all of my music from my old computer to this one. You might think that simply copying the songs to an iPod (as files, not music that can be listened to) and trasferring them to the desired computer would solve my problem. However, this has proved unsucessful so far. I am trying to avoid importing all of my backup CDs because the album artwork would be lost. Is there a way to hook my two computers up via FireWire or something else? The computer I want to transfer music from is an iMac - one of the new flat panels but without the built in iSight so it has FireWire ports. Any help on this matter is greatly appreciated.

If your iPod is large enough, you can transfer the library without loosing anything (ratings, play counts etc.) using these instructions:
How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer.
Another method is to connect your computers by Ethernet or Firewire.
Using the latter method, put the source computer in Firewire target disk mode. The MacBook will see the iMac as an external HD.
You can then copy all your music to the MacBook.
If your MacBook has the same file structure (folder mapping and username) of the iMac, copy the entire iTunes folder (including iTunes Music folder and the library files) to the same location on your MacBook. iTunes will recognize the library and find all songs.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to transfer itunes music from old computer to new computer

I am sure someone has asked this question before but darned if I can find it anywhere...I have a new computer and want to transfer my music (which was loaded from CDs) from my old computer to my new one. I also want to keep my playlists that I spent time setting up. But when I plug my ipod touch into my new computer it simply asks me if I want to wipe all the music on it and replace it with what is in itunes on the new computer ie. nothing.
    Help!

Quit iTunes and click over to your My Documents folder. Inside this folder, go to My Music. Inside My Music is your iTunes music folder. Now, copy this to a flash drive (if its big enough), an external hard drive, online using backup services like Mozy, or burned onto a CD-R or a DVD. You can even enable Disk Use on your iPod and move it there.
After you copy the iTunes library, disconnect whatever you used and take it to your new computer.

  • Transferring music from old computer to new computer

How do I transfer my itunes music library from my old to new computer?  I will not have both computers hooked together so plan to do this using an external hard drive.  Is there a code to input in my new computer/itunes so the previously downloaded music can play on the new computer.  I'm going from XP Home to Windows 7.

    dwb
Yes I think it is better to use the same account name. The thing that's puzzled me is Apple make no mention of the issue of account name in their transfer instructions.
From some experiments on my PC moving my music folder around, I think what iTunes does is to check in the music folder if it can't find a track in the library.
If you move the music folder, the existing tracks are not moved. But if you move a folder from the old to the new location using Windows, iTunes seems to notice that you did it and doesn't mind. Also if you move the music folder back to it's original location, iTunes is quite happy with that too.
I think the effect of this is that although the path name for tracks is wrong when you copy the library file to the new PC, iTunes finds the tracks as long as they are in the new iTunes Music Folder
It is a nuisance that the library file is encrypted so you can't see what it is up to.

  • Transferring music from old computer to new

I lost all of my music while trying to sync my Ipod touch to my new computer. However, I still have my Itunes library on my old computer, which is on its last leg. This includes many songs copied from CD's, which would take hours to duplicate. Is there any way of copying the Itunes library other than with a USB device as the USB ports don't seem to be working? It doesn't seem to be recognizing the ethernet cable either, so CD?

    - You can burn to CD and then import from that CD on the new computer.
    - You could also take the HD out of the computer and place it in an external enclosure that has a USB connection and then connect to the your computer and import.

  • Moving itunes music from old computer to new computer

I have itunes installed on an older computer. I am setting up a new computer and want to move my itunes folder to the new computer. I have moved the folder and 80% of my songs are on the new itunes but I have no playlists. How do I get the rest of my purchased music and my playlists to my new computer?

    Hello, Welcome to discussions.
More info on how to Import/Export Playlists below. Please understand you need to Export these from the original machine as a .txt file, and bring them to the new machine and import them. As long as the songs are all in iTunes the playlist will rebuild.

*The steps for backing up and restoring playlists may vary depending on your iTunes version. For the most recent version the instructions are as follows
    -Highlight a playlist in iTunes
-Go to File - Library-Export Playlist- It will save as a .txt file to any location you wish
*To restore the playlist in iTunes
-Go to File - Library - Import Playlist - Select file - Open
