Move New Windows Inside Recording Area & More

Hi All
I have a few questions for all those kind people who
contribute their time and experience here.
I am exploring Captivate and have trouble with my new windows
or dialogs jumping outside the recording area. I am creating movies
using 'Custom Size and when I open new dialogs, they are opening up
outside of the recorded area. I have the 'New Windows Inside
Recording Area ' recording option checked, but it still happens. Is
there something I am missing, another setting perhaps or a
combination of things I am doing or not doing to prevent this?
Another problem I am having occurs when I am recording a CAD
application. When I open new dialogs and then close them, I get
this display problem that shows where the dialog just appeared. The
problem is that my application is blank where the dialog box was -
I cannot see any of the icons of commands. It only ever happens
when I am recording, not when I am generally using the program. Is
this a known phenomenon, maybe a video card acceleration or OpenGL
issue perhaps?
Thanks in advance - I look forward to hearing from anyone who
can help me solve these issues.
Cheers,
spritc.

Hi there "spritc.",
To your first problem, that of those pesky windows opening
outside the selected recording area, if you use "Application"
instead of "Custom", I think you'll find you have better luck.
To your second problem, yes, I think you figured it out, you
have a problem with video. Try disabling hardware acceleration and
see if that won't help with the "shadow of where it was" issue.
That option is in "Control Panel > Display > Settings (tab)
> Advanced" on most systems.
Now, a lesson in Captivate (or you can call it a "rant" by an
old-timer if you wish).
Many new users have been so "sold" on Captivate's "automatic"
features that they have forgotten what its real purpose is, and
that sometimes there is more than one way to accomplish it. It was
created to fill a need to capture background changes in
applications, then add objects to those changed backgrounds to
accomplish the true goal of electronic learning through
demonstration and/or simulation. Notice that nowhere in that
statement did I use the word "fast", nor "automatic", nor
"effortless", nor did I add "without the effort of thought".
"spritc.", this is not directed at you nor meant to demean
you in any way. The statement above is a result of my own
frustration with a lack of reality in advertising and promotion of
the product - not just Captivate but all products. With that said,
here is how you do what you want to do:
About Windows: Be aware that all "Windows" applications
share some helpful features. One is that when an application is
opened, it should open in a window of the same dimensions, and at
the same position as the position and dimensions it occupied when
it was last closed. That includes - or is supposed to - additional
supporting pop-ups and dialog boxes (windows) for the application.
Another feature of Windows applications is that if the main
application window is placed too closely to - say - the right edge
of the screen (or the bottom, or the top) and is too close for an
attached drop-list to appear to the right, it will automatically
appear instead - on the left, or above its normal position. In
other words, Windows compensates for bad positioning by adjusting
its location of appearance on the screen. So much for issues
created by and corrected by the Windows OS.
About Captivate: When in "Record" mode, Captivate does take
a snapshot each time it detects a change in the background (caused
by what we call an "event"), thus automatically creating a series
of snapshots that we know as a demonstration or simulation, as the
case may be. But there is a key on the keyboard that is much
ignored, but of greatest value - it is named the "PrtScr" key, and
(by default - it can be changed to another key) pressing it will
cause Captivate to "snap" a background image, in addition to those
snapped automatically by the detection of an "event". Captivate
also gives you a feature that is nearly unknown among new users ...
it is called the "other option". That is (to give you a simple
example), while the Recording Options dialog gives you the
(default) action of automatically recording keystrokes, the act of
un-ticking this box gives you the
other option of
not automatically recording keystrokes. There are many
"automatic" functions that are the default selections during the
recording of a Captivate movie, and each gives you the option of
turning it off.
Now, let's put these two groups of knowledge together. Before
recording, know what you are going to "click" to create a
background change image. Then do a "walkthrough" without Captivate
running. Each dialog box that pops up should be adjusted for size
and position during this walkthrough so that when Captivate's
actual image-recording begins, each dialog will appear where you
want it. Also, each menu item that opens outside the recording area
should be tested to see where it will appear; if the "File" menu
item you want is falling off the bottom of the recording area, try
positioning the main application window lower on-screen . . . this
should force the "File" menu items to appear to "drop up", instead
of "dropping down", allowing the wanted item to appear properly
within the recording area. Finally (for this excerpt), you should
always have one eye on that "PrtScr" key mentioned above. There may
be times when using that magic key to force the capture of a
background, is the only way to grab an image of a "missed event" -
for instance, the appearance of a tooltip.
In conclusion, don't blindly buy what the advertising people
are selling. Be prepared to use your imagination and even some
preparation work in making your movies. There are very few things
that Captivate can't do in its line of work, but somethimes you
have to do the "thinking" for it.
Have a really great day!!

  • Problems snapping window to recording area

    Hi,
    I am recording an application that opens multiple windows when clicking an option/button and the windows are various sizes, which does not automatically snap within the recording area.
    I know I could record full screen, but then it doesn't  look as smart, and is way too big for this project.
    Any ideas please..?

    Hi Sreekanth_S & Rod,
    No I did not use the auto panning option (& never have but must give it a run at some stage), however in the meantime I resorted to Rod's way of moving the windows etc in the recording area. A bit of fuss but it works.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Since I installed Firefox 5.0, when I open a new window my toolbars are not there. I also cannot open links in a new window.

    With the old version, if I opened a new window, my homepage opened and all my toolbars were there. I don't want to have to open my toolbars every time I open a new window. Sometimes they won't open at all.

    Hi tomab,
    By default Firefox opens a blank tab when you hit the tab button. The fact that is shows an actual page leads me to believe that you have an add-on or something else causing your issue. I'd try starting Firefox in [[Safe Mode]]. If you don't have the issue while all of your add-ons, extensions, and themes are disabled, you can try adding them back in one by one until you find the culprit. You should look at the [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting-extensions-themes Extensions and Themes troubleshooting guide ] and the [[Troubleshooting plugins]] article as well.
    Hopefully this helps!

  • How to move new Windows 8 file swapfile.sys to another drive?

    Windows 8 has a new swapping / paging file called swapfile.sys. It resides in %SystemDrive% directory, or C:\ for most users. It looks to be a swap file for Modern UI / Metro apps (source: https://blogs.technet.com/b/askperf/archive/2012/10/28/windows-8-windows-server-2012-the-new-swap-file.aspx?Redirected=true).
    I wanted to ask how this can be moved to other drives, the same way pagefile.sys etc can be.
    After having just installed Windows 8, I am going through the process of moving files that get a lot of writes, like pagefile.sys and hiberfill.sys, to other mechanical drvies, instead of being on my SSD with it’s limited write life. There seems to be no method
    of doing this for swapfile.sys.
    After a search, only this tread turned up (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_cp-performance/to-move-swapfilesys-to-another-drive/bd1d5424-e410-4742-9668-e5060a021d40?tm=1356272384010), for the same question but it as never answered. All
    that was explained, was how to disable both pagefile.sys and swapfile.sys. Also how to move pagefile.sys. The question about moving swapfile.sys was never answered. Hence why I am asking again. There also seems to be no registry settings for this file, that
    I could find to change, to accomplish pointing it's location elsewhere.
    Am not interested into getting into a debate about whether it is worth while moving files off SSD's to save on writes.
    So if someone, ideally from Microsoft, can explain how to do, with this new swap file, what had been possible with the existing page file, for a good few Windows versions it would be much appreciated. Or how it can be disabled, without disabling the normal
    pagefile setup, as I don't use and don't intend Modern UI apps.

    I also think this could not be moved and I could not find any document about moving it, either.
    Thanks.

  • There is no pop-up blocking, but none of the "new window" type links are working.

    When I would like to open a picture(for example: ebaying, and enlarging the product -> comes in another window) I get empty new screen. I also have problems with Adobe(pdf files are not opening). I changed back to 3.6.10 but problem still persists. Seems like I cannot open anything where I see on the bar: javascript:;
    Thanks for any suggestion! I really do not want to change browser!

  • New windows not opening inside frame when set to do so

    I am using Captivate 3.0 and trying to capture a Web-based
    program.
    Although I have checked the setting to open a new window
    inside the frame, it appears that this is not happening as planned.
    A link to a new web page will open this window outside the red
    frame.
    Any clues as to why this may happen?
    Thanks,
    -Nick

    Hi Nick
    As you have seen, this setting is hit or miss. Sometimes it
    works and sometimes it fails. If it fails, you may always press the
    Pause/Break key to pause recording, move the window into the
    recording area, then press Pause/Break to resume recording.

  • Is there a way to open new tabs on the same site without having them go to a new window?

    i like to go to article sites and open up many tabs where each tab is a new article. this allows me to quickly go from one article to the next. when i try to do this with the new firefox it opens the new tabs in a new window because they are from the same site. is there any way for me to turn that feature off?

    Do you mean the Switch to Tabs kicks in if you enter an already opened URL?

Basically its when i click on a button a new window pops upWe need more information on what you mean here, what you know and what you don't know. Do you understand the basics of Java? Are you talking about using Swing? If so, what exactly do you mean by a "new window"? You can create a simple dialog via the method JOptionPane.showMessage(...) method. Do you mean to create and show a new JDialog? JFrame? Do you know about ActionListeners and how to add them to jbuttons? Given your post, I think that your best bet would be to start going through the Sun Java Swing tutorial from the beginning. Look here .

  • Topics opening in new window

    I've run across several posts on how to make a topic open in a new window, but I have the opposite problem. I don't want my topics to open in a new window, but they are.
    I have a master project with several child projects merged into it. The Contents tab has a folder called Module Help with subfolders for each of the merged projects. When I expand the TOC for one of the merged projects and click a topic, it displays in the pane to the right as expected. The problem is when I click on a different topic - it opens in a new help viewer window. When I click more topics, they open in this same new window.
    I'm using RH X5 to generate .chm files. I'm on Win XP SP3. I didn't set this up, so I'm not familiar with exactly how it all works. The following are sections of code from the master .hhc file that may be useful. If there is something else I can provide, please let me know. Thanks.

    Hi Colum,
    Thanks for the reply. I changed the default window to $global_main for the master project and I went through and started making this change in all of the merged projects. I also reimported the master project .hhc file into the merged project's baggage files.
    The problem with the topics opening in a new window is now fixed, but I was getting this message when I clicked a help topic:
    The window name "Main" passed to HH_GET_WIN_TYPE has not been specified. After I clicked OK, the topic would appear.
    I double-checked that I had $global_main everywhere it should be, but that didn't help. So I went through and changed the name back to main in the master project and I've started doing it in the merged projects. I thought this had fixed the problem, but now, of course, there is a new one.
    When I open the master project .chm file, the TOC appears to be correct, but when I click a topic, it doesn't open. (No messages appear.)
    When I open a merged project .chm file, I can click the topics and they appear as expected. However, when I close the .chm file, the following message appears:
    hh.exe - Application Error
    The instruction at "0x7c919af" referenced memory at "0x0000010". the memory could not be "written".
    I've been trying to fix issues related to this TOC for several days now, and I'm at the end of my rope. Any further advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • When I open a new tab, a new window opens instead. I have set preferences... doesnt matter. Help please.

    Everytime I open a new link from an originalpage a new window opens instead.

    Are that JavaScript links?
    You can look at the browser.link.open_newwindow prefs on the about:config page.
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction (0)
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.link.open_newwindow (3)
    To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
    If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />
    *Use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a preference more easily.
    *Preferences that have been modified show as bold(user set).
    *Preferences can be reset to the default or changed via the right-click context menu.

  • Links to files doesn't open in a new window

    I've noticed that links (that refers to a specific file) created in Adobe Indesign doesn't open in a new window like the links that refers to a website when I autoconverts it in Acrobat Pro X.
    Example:
    LINK1: http://www.acrobat.com/testfile.pdf <--- does not open in a new window when clicked
    LINK2: http://www.acrobat.com/testfolder <--- opens in a new window when clicked
    Are there any way to fix this?
    Will the same problem occur if I create the links in Acrobat instead?
    I'm asking this because I don't want the form to disappear when the links are clicked.
    Best,
    Mikey

    Firefox should divert the new window to a new tab when you check this box in Google's Search Settings:
    "Open search results in a new browser window"
    I can't think of any reason for Firefox to divert a new window back into ''the same tab''.
    In case one of your add-ons is the culprit, could you try Firefox's Safe Mode?
    First, I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing+up+your+information Backing up your information]. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)
    Next, restart Firefox using Help>Restart with Add-ons Disabled. Don't check any of the boxes in the [https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode Safe Mode] dialog, just Continue in Safe Mode.
    Does it make any difference?

  • Universal Worklist items open in new window instead of existing frame

    After our recent upgrade we noticed that workitems in Universal Worklist open in new window instead of existing frame.  Do you know if there is a system or universal setting to make all the workitems open in existing frame?  I know we can change the settings for parameters launchInNewWindow and openInNewWindow to "no" in XML files to fix this.   However, my concern is that I would need to do this for each and every task we use.  (still doable but wondering if there is simpler solution)
    Example:
        <ItemType name="uwl.task.webflow.TS12300097.SAP_R3_CUSTOM_DEV" connector="WebFlowConnector" defaultView="DefaultView" defaultAction="launchWebDynPro" executionMode="default">
          <ItemTypeCriteria systemId="SAP_R3_CUSTOM_DEV" externalType="TS12300097" connector="WebFlowConnector"/>
          <Actions>
            <Action name="launchWebDynPro" groupAction="" handler="SAPWebDynproLauncher" returnToDetailViewAllowed="yes" launchInNewWindow="yes" launchNewWindowFeatures="resizable=yes,scrollbars=yes,status=yes,toolbar=no,menubar=no,location=no,directories=no">
              <Properties>
                <Property name="WebDynproApplication" value="LeaveRequestApprover"/>
                <Property name="WebDynproDeployableObject" value="sap.com/ess~lea"/>
                <Property name="newWindowFeatures" value="resizable=yes,scrollbars=yes,status=yes,toolbar=no,menubar=no,location=no,directories=no"/>
                <Property name="openInNewWindow" value="yes"/>
                <Property name="display_order_priority" value="5"/>
              </Properties>
              <Descriptions default=""/>
            </Action>
          </Actions>
        </ItemType>

    We downloaded uwl.standard.xml from UWL admin.  Made a copy and renamed file.  Changed all "launchInNewWindow" from "yes" to "no".  Uploaded new file in UWL admin.  Re-registered systems, cleared cache.  Not sure what exact line changed the behavior but the workitems no longer open in new window.
    We are still experimenting with file in our sandbox environment.

  • Want to open links in a new tab not a new window.

    When using a mouse I know I can middle click (wheel) and the web-link I am clicking will open in a new tab. I also know I can drag that link to the + sign on the tab bar and it will open. But while using the Keyboard only, when I want to open a webpage link in a new tab, it always opens in a new window, why?
    I noticed while searching in Mozilla Support that hitting any box opens in a new tab ( this is the effect I want) why does this not happen on other webpages?
    I may be answering my own question here but could it be the one 'NewsNow' website that is causing my problem?

    The setting in Tools > Options > Tabs: "New pages should be opened in": "a new tab/window" is for links that specify a target window for opening a link.
    The browser.link.open_newwindow pref only affects links that specify a target window.
    You can use the browser.link.open_newwindow pref to divert links that specify a target to the current tab or a new tab.
    The browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction pref allows to divert (onclick) JavaScript window.open() links.
    Links that do not specify a target always open in the current tab unless you override that with a middle-click or Ctrl (Mac: Cmd) left-click (new tab) or Shift left-click (new window).
    There are also extensions that have options how a link is opened, so you can check out the Add-ons website.

  • How to properly close task flow opened in new window?

    Have a question on the best practice to properly close a task flow when it has been opened in a new window.

Scenario is that of an email in-box where the user can open multiple messages concurrently. Want to have the "Close" button that closes the window and properly exits the bounded task flow.

    Hi Frank
    I'm hoping the after listener will fire (haven't tested it yet)
    What I would like to do is to create a method in the application module that does (I'm typing this from memory so there might be some typos):
    procedure void cleanTransaction() {
        if this.getDBTransaction().isDirty() {
          this.getDBTransaction().rollback()
    }then expose the method in the application module client implementation.
    Then in a pageFlowScope bean method find the application module and call the cleanTransaction() method.
    The bean method could then be hooked up to the after listenr.
    Would this work, and how do I find the application module ?
    Also I not sure if it is the application module hanlding the transaction or the data frame.
