Move photos and catalog to different PC

I have all my pictures (in directories) and the catalog in one root directory of a given drive.
I need to move to a new PC where the drive name for the root directory will be different.
What is the right way do to it for LR3?
Thanks

You need to copy to the new machine:
The image files (obviously), and include any sidecar (.xmp) files
The Lightroom catalog (.lrcat) file
Any presets you've created (in subfolders of the "Lightroom settings" folder, which itself is in the same folder as the catalog)
If you've added any camera profiles to the Adobe-supplied ones, they're in C:\Users\All Users\Adobe\CameraRaw (that's W7, C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\CameraRaw for XP)
I think that's all you need.  You don't need to copy catalog backups (but don't delete all your backups, obviously), and you don't need to copy previews (LR recreates them when needed).
If the images aren't in the same place on the new computer, then when you go in LR (after you've pointed it to the catalog), click the top folder in your folder list, and it will grumble that it can't find it, and you can tell where it's gone.
Obviously, don't delete anything from the first computer until you're happy everything works on the new one.
PS - this is such a comment requirement, perhaps Adobe should put a section in the help file about it.  If it is there, I can't find it!

  • How do i move photos and catalog to a new drive and have lightroom make the same move

I am trying to move all my photos to a new drive with different drive letter.  I know I can do a backup and restore inside PSE13 to perform that.  However, I also have Lightroom 5 on the current setup.  How would I now use the new location for the photos in lightroom if they are already moved by PSE?
    Hope this makes sense!

I don't recommend the Time Machine or Migation Assistent approach. The first tneds to be very slow and the second often carries baggage that is probably best not transferred to a new computer.
Lightroom doesn't use activation, therefore, can be installed on your new Mac without having first removed it fom the old. Your images and catalogs can be copied across to the new Mac using an a portable disk drive as the transfer medium. Typically, on Mac computers, the catalog and image files are stored in the Pictures folder. If this is where you have them then then copy them to the same location on the new Mac. Once copied you can open the catalog folder then double click on the .lrcat file to launch Lightroom.

  • Move photos and catalog without loosing folders

Hi , I need to move my PSE 7 catalog from my current hard disk ( old HD)  to an other HD (new HD).
    My needs are:
    1) that of moving the fotos to the new HD so that they maintain the folder structure they are in the old hard disk.
    2) I also need the catalog to move in the same new HD ad
    3) I need then the catalog to see the fotos in the old folder structure but now in the new HD
    4) no lose the tagging.
    Thank you !!!

First, I suggest that you read here:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshopelements-6-7-faq.htm#_Move_your_photos
Look specifically at the pargraph about using Folder Location view.
However,  I also suggest that you describe in more detail
-- about your new and your old hard drive before you start moving files. This is not a cloned drive situation, is it? Will your new and old drives have different serial numbers?
-- do you also want to move the catalog file itself (?) as I was not clear on that. Where is your catalog now?: is it in the default location? Note that Moving the catalog would be a separate action using the File > Catalog commands.

  • How do I move all photos and catalog (PE 6)  from local computer drive to network server drive?

I'm using PE 6. I have about 40 GB of photos all organized and cataloged on my local PC's hard drive. I have just installed a home server that is networked and want to move/migrate all the photos and catalog information/organization from my local PC drive to the home server's hard drive. Basically, just moving everything to a new drive. I then need to point PE 6 to this new location for the photos and catalog information. All advice on how to do this would be appreciated?

I just got done doing this and I'm not so sure I'd recommend it.
#1 reason: The #$%%#$ Organizer has REAL PROBLEMS figuring out network path names. It has this really nasty habit of thinking, say, \\homeserv\photos, \\Homeserv\Photos, and \\HOMESERV\PHOTOS are DIFFERENT paths. And depending on how you use it to navigate, or drag and drop files onto it, or teach it to watch a folder on a network drive or whatever, it uses variants on these kinds of path names. This leads to problems like duplicate imports that are really the same file.
    What a ***.
You MIGHT have better luck if you use a mapped drive letter to make this work. Sad. The rules for writing WinApps to NOT NEED mapped drive letters have been common knowledge to developers for a decade. Just not Adobe developers, apparently. Beyond sad. Pathetic.

  • How do I share photos and music between different user accounts on the same macbook

How do I share photos and music between different user accounts on the same Macbook? i.e. I want all to be able to access family photos when logged into their respective accounts. Same goes for the iTunes library. Hope this is possible...
    Thanks!

To give other users read-only access to your iTunes library, use the Sharing features of iTunes. Sharing works over the local network as well as on the same computer. See the built-in help for details.
To give others selective access to your iPhoto library, you have the option of using iCloud Photo Sharing, if the privacy implications don't bother you. The images will be stored temporarily on Apple servers.
If you want to give full read/write access to more than one user, see the support articles linked below.
iTunes: How to share music between different accounts on a single computer
iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users
There is a way to share the library without moving it to a secondary volume. If you really need to do that, ask for instructions.

  • Restore photos and catalog together on new computer?

I recently had a computer crash and want to migrate my photos and changes from my old hard drive into my newly installed Lightroom software on the new computer.  I recovered the old drive, and accessed it from my new computer.  I found the most recent Lightroom catalog and imported it.  Then I imported all of my photos into Lightroom.  The problem is that the catalog and the photos don't seem to be talking to each other.  In the catalog, the photos are there all bunched together, no folders separating by date.  In the photo folders that ARE separated by date, the original photos are there as they were first imported (RAW files), but don't have the develop changes that I made to them.  How can I get these two things to link up?

I think the easiest thing to do is to follow these instructions from scratch, rather than trying to fix what you have already done

  • Can I use my iPod to move photos and music from one computer to another?

    Hi,
Is it possible to have photos and music on my iPod from one computer, and then copy those from my iPod to another computer? (like with an ordinary USB-unit)
And another question: Is it possible to download movies onto my iPod? If yes, how? (owner of an iPod 30GB)
    Thanks!

Did you set it to copy full-resolution photos??? If so, enable your iPod for disk use, open my computer, click on your iPod, and open the pictures folder. You can just drag them from there. If you didn't, use a program such a CopyPod Photo (google it) to copy photos from your iPod. Note that the files will only be the same resolution as your iPod screen (320x240) and not worth using for anything else. If you want to use it for sharing, definitely go with the full-res option. It is at the bottom of the photos pane in the iPod screen in iTunes.

  • Moving folder with photos and catalog ircat from one hard drive to another.

    mac g4, 10.4.11, 1.5gb RAM
I need to free up space on my hardrive and want to move a folder which has photos and the lightroom catalogue .ircat in it as well as tiffs that have been worked on in potoshop, i want to keep them all togerth.
If i move that whole folder to another hardrive what do i have to do for lightroom to find it.. i have collections for this folder as well and don't want to lose them,
    thanx.....

You don't need to change the authorisation of your computer to keep your music on another drive connected to it. Have a look at this Apple guide it should help you moving your music folder: Moving your iTunes Music Folder

  • Import photos and video into different folders

Hi, is there any way to import photos and videos into seperate folders?
I use lightroom to manage my photos and videos, but the videos are much larger so I prefer they are stored in a different location.
I can import them together and drag the photos to a new folder, but this does not create the same folder heirarchy as importing them would.
Currently I import once for photos and onece for videos, but I'd prefer to just "import"
    Thanks!

This plugin from Rob Cole might do what you're after http://www.robcole.com/Rob/ProductsAndServices/ImporterLrPlugin/index.cfm

  • How do I move photos and mp3s from my old G4?

I have an old G4 running an older version of OSX. I couldn't upgrade it any further because of the power PC.. We I just got a new 27" iMac and it is STUNNING! I love this machine!
I am having trouble moving the photos and music. The migration assistant doesn't seem to find my old G4 on the network. Any tips?

try connecting the macs directly by an ethernet cable. MA should be able to find it then. also, you can connect them by a firewire cable (you might need to get a firewire 800 to 400 cable if you don't have one), boot the old mac in target mode and run MA that way. lastly, if you have an external USB drive you can clone your old mac to that drive (use Superduper or CCCloner for that) and move the drive to the new mac. then run migration assistant on that.

  • How to move photos and videos from phone to computer?

I want to take my videos and photos off my phone and move them on to my DELL computer but cannot figure out how to do it.

Connect iPhone to computer with USB cable. Then when Photo Wizard launches, use it to place the photos and videos onto the computer. Or connect iPhone to computer with USB cable, go to My Computer, click on iPhone icon and access photos and videos here and you place them onto the computer.

  • Sharing photos and music on different devices

    Hi
Please, please can someone help it's going to have to be step by step as although I've been using computers for last 20yrs its been windows and the only exposure I've had to apple is with my I phone which I struggle to follow some of the features. Me and my hubby are having lots of problems. We set up an I-tunes account some yrs ago then had I-phones then bought a galaxy nexus tablet and just now bought Packard bell laptop (which is nothing like my old laptop). We have both got separate apple id accounts which are also different to the iTunes account. W have been into the settings on both I-cloud and our I-phones and I-tunes to try and see how we can still have our separate apple id accounts with our own contacts etc but we want to share and view ach others photos we take on both our own phones and those we save to the laptop from external devices - we want to see all our photos from all devices and both apple id accounts. This is the same for iTunes. I'm really struggling, I've spent 2 days looking on here and all the replies to people are so technical or don't really help me.
    Please can anyone advise???
    Many Thanks

If you want all users to be able to access the same music, but with different libraries, NikkiG's advice is spot on. However, I thought I'd throw in my 2¢ since I just set this up for a friend.
If you want all your users to have exactly the same library, and not just access to a shared library, do the following:
-move the entire "iTunes" folder (~/Music/iTunes) into the Shared folder or to separate drive.
-in each user's account, remove the iTunes folders (or just move them to a new location until you're positive this method works for you)
-pop open Terminal.app (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app) and here's where it gets a little dicey; type the following into the command line:
    ln -s /Users/Shared/iTunes/ ~/Music/iTunes/
What this does is create a symbolic link (think alias, but more technical and powerful) between the iTunes folder in the Shared folder, and each user's iTunes folder. This way, each user is directly accessing the iTunes library, and not just through the shared area in iTunes itself. This allows them to add/remove music and playlists to the same library.
HOWEVER, this method will mess up if you have multiple users logged in and using iTunes at the same time.

  • Backing up photos and catalog to second hard drive

i just installed Photoshp elements 7 on xp home machine.  i have done a lot of work to tag much of my collection.   i know from using databases like this, they can be corrupted.  i want to back up the catalog before that happens.  however when i go to file and back up catalog to hard drive, dvd etc.  it just sits there for a long time and then eventually just crashes.  i have done the "ctrl, alt, shift" thing to optimize and repair (tho it said it wasn't broken) and it still crashes.  is this a bug, or am i not doing something i should be.
    Thanks for you help.
    Deb

You have not made it clear where the external hard drive is located and what access rights it has.
For example if the external drive is out on the network somewhere then the network could be the problem. With regard access rights, if the directory on the external drive was created by a different user to the user name you are using to do the backup, that could be the problem.
My suggestion is to do the backup into a directory on the XP machine and check that it works there. If it does then it is drive problem not an PE problem.
In my case I back the catalog on the main computer and then use MS SyncToy to keep a copy on a second computer. In your case you could copy over file to the other drive or use SyncToy to put it on another drive, but as one of the other contributers pointed out, the back up of the catalog will keep the same file structure as the original.

  • What are the PSE 8 default locations for photos and catalog files in Windows 7?

I can only find this information in the Knowlege Base for XP and Vista.
    Thanks for help

The default locations for catalog folders on Wndows 7 is the same as on Vista:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/515/cpsid_51536.html
To find out where the current catalog folder is located, do Help > System Info.
The default locations for photos are under My Pictures on Windows 7, as compared to Pictures on Vista.

  • Copying photo and pasting into different project

this should be an easy one, yet i can't figure it out. i simply want to copy a photo in one project and paste the copy into another project. i don't want to move the photo.

Just hold down the option key while dragging from one project folder to another - this will copy it, make sure you have the actual project folder as the drop target.
Realize you rarely need to copy anything to make it show up somewhere - if you create an album anywhere you can chuck images into the album from anywhere else and they will not be copied but just displayed together.
