Move photos, music, time machine

I would like to move my iphoto library, itunes library and time machine off of my current i-mac.  What is my best solution?  I love that my ipad and iphone sync with my computer when i walk in the door, if I move the libraries to an external drive would I lose that ability?  I am open to any suggestions.  I have an external hard drive now that shares between three other computers.  I tried copying my itunes library but a lot of times it can't find every song and new additions have to be manually moved.  I want to be able to access the music and photos from my other devices.  I want an easy solution that just works.
Thank you in advance.

Your Time Machine (TM) should already be on an external HD. However if for some reason it is not you can follow the directions Pondini described in this link:
http://pondini.org/TM/18.html
As far as moving your other libraries, i.e. iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie etc to external HD's that is also pretty simple. Apple explains these functions in:
iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder
iPhoto: How to move the Library folder to a new location
iMovie is extremely similar.
A couple of words of caution though. First DO NOT, use the same EHD to store your libraries as your backup HD, store those libraries on a totally separate HD. The reason is simple, all HD's fail eventually and if you store the libraries on the same HD as the TM backup and that drive fails you will have lost both the libraries and their backup! EHD's are relatively inexpensive, get yourself high quality EHDs. I'd recommend using OWC (www.macsales.com) Mercury Elite Pro series.

  • How do I move photos from Time Machine backup to iPhoto in new Mac?

A friend has been backing up his very old Mac with an external drive.  I find lots of pages about move/copy TO external drive but need to find a correct way to move them from the backup drive to iPhoto on the new Mac.

You do not "move" files from a TM backiup - you restore tehm using the TM program - launch TM and go to the time you want to restore from, select the iPhoto library and click restore

How do I move data on time machine from one external hard drive to another?

Although the documentation says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it's very slow and sometimes doesn't work at all.
Launch Disk Utility, open the built-in help, and search for the term "Duplicate." Follow the instructions. Turn Time Machine OFF in its preference pane while copying the volume.

  • How to restore a single Photo with time machine in Aperture 3 / iphoto?

How to restore a single Photo with time machine in Aperture 3 / iphoto?

Its been awhile since I used iPhoto, but I have done it.
If I recall correctly this is how.
In iPhoto open event that you need to restore the photo to ( the event that originally contained it )
Then open TM it should show that same event and then go back in time until you find the missing shot
Highlight the one you need to restore and tell TM to restore it.
    Good luck

  • Recovering photos from time machine

I just bought a new MacBook Pro and find that time machine is not allowing me to retrieve photos from Time Machine through iPhoto like it used to.  How do I do that now?

With the current version of iPhoto only entire iPhoto Libraries can be restored:
If you need to restore a single photo and know the file name there is a way to do that.  If that's what you want post back and I'll layout how to do it.

You might post this query on the iPhoto forum and perhaps someone there can provide an answer.
I tried this on my MBP and it seems that you have to restore the entire iPhoto Library.  What I did was put the current library in a separate folder on the desktop and then I restored the library from a prior date.  If you were to do that, you then could extract the desired photos and then delete the restored library.  Then place the current library back to the original location and import the desired photos.
Not tidy but it seems it will work.
    Ciao.

  • Find photos in TIME MACHINE...Help...PLEASE....

    Hello all.
I have been using time machine to back up my Imac for a little over a year.  I just looked in Time Machine and can't seem to find any of the photo files in there.  All my Itunes music files are there.  Everything thing on the desktop is in there but I can't find the photo files anywhere....
Luckily, I still have them all on my actual hard drive but need to install a new OS which require me to erase all the contents of the current hard drive.  BEFORE I do this, I want to be 100% sure the photos are on the "My Book" external harddrive that Time Machine is supposed to back everything up to.
Any help finding the in finding the files would be greatly appreciatted...
    Thanks,
    JB

Although you can't make any changes to the files or you'll risk corrupting your library,  you can hold down the control key and then click on your 'iPhoto Library' file where a popup menu will appear. Select 'Show package contents' and a finder window will open showing the contents of your iPhoto Library. There will usually be lots of folders that open containing your master files, modified files, thumbnails, etc. Open up the folder labeled 'Masters' and you should be able to see your files. It will at least provide you with reassurance that your library is intact.
Another option is to hold down the option key when launching iPhoto. This will allow you to select a different iPhoto library to open, or to create a new one.

  • I accidentally delete all my photo in the "all my files". How could I back up all the photo? (time machine is turn off)

I accidentally delete all my photo in the "all my files".
actually I delete every thing in ALL MY FILES.
How could I back up all the photo?
and other data, such as movies and so on?
Do I need to go to Apple store to back up?
    (time machine is turn off)

If you don't have a back up then you'll need to use a file recovery app like File Salvage
To back up iPhoto you make a copy of the Library on another disk.

  • Retrieval of just photos using Time Machine backup

Had the hard disk replaced on my iMac.  I would now like to retrieve just the photos and videos (that were in iPhoto) from the backup (used Time Machine).  I don't want to restore the entire thing.  How do I go about doing this?

I think you hit it on the last part.
When you reinstall the OS (or use a new system) and create a username, if it is the same as the username that you are trying to restore, there will be a conflict. Items in the users folder (music, documents, pictures... any subfolder) are bound to that UID. You should be able to rename the user account that you set up on the new system, then restore the old user and docs and delete the initial "setup" user account. Once they log in with the restored user account, permissions should be fine.
