Move rejected to trash changes aspect ratio of a clip

I just switched from iMovie HD to iMovie '11. I imported all old projects that I did not yet work on into the new version. This worked fine and I created my first movie successfully. For the current movie I have a lot of raw material in the format of 16:9 (DV). So I rejected parts of a clip and moved these to the trash in order to free space. But after moving the rejected parts, something happend to the aspect ratio of the remainder of the clip. The remaining clip is now distorted to 4:3 (black bars to the left and right, image distorted in height). All other clips are still in 16:9 and the projects settings tell this, too.
Does anyone know how to reset the clip in the event viewer to the correct aspect ratio?
Many thanks,
Erik

It sounds like that in the process of deleting the first half of the clip, the Anamorphic flag was stripped off.
You should be able to fix this in MPEG Streamclip, which is free.
In iMovie, right-click on the Event clip with the bad aspect ratio. Select Reveal In Finder. Drag this clip into Mpeg Streamclip.
In mpeg streamclip, FILE/EXPORT TO DV.
Choose 16:9 as aspect ratio and leave everything else the same.
Import this clip back into your imovie project. When you are sure all is well, you can delete the other one.

  • Changing Aspect Ratio on multiple clips

I posted earlier about the "16:9 confusion". I have since figured out that somehow my aspect ratio went to -33.33 on all of my clips. The only way I have found to fix this is to change the aspect ratio on each individual clip back to 0. I have hundreds of clips. Is there a way to select & change them all back to 0?
    Thanks,
    Dave

    glad you got it solved.
As you can see you can conversely paste attributes (should you need in the future to paste filters, basic motions etc. to a number of clips ) by simply copy (command+C) the clip to which you applied a given effect or basic motion and select and right click the desired clips and choose "paste attributes..."

  • Changing aspect ratio for edited clips

    Hi,
There probably isn't a way to do this, but I thought I'd ask. One of my students made a film using a JVC camera and two other SD cameras. The JVC was in 16X9 aspect (he didn't notice) and the other cameras were in 4X3. We had trouble getting the video off the JVC camera and then getting it into the right aspect ratio, as its files came out as 4X3, looking a little squished needless to say. He completed his project using those clips. I have finally figured out a way to get the JVC clips back into 16X9. Is there a way that I can replace the clips he used in his video with clips in the correct aspect ratio without losing his editing?
    Thanks,
    Mike

I suppose in theory this is possible since iMovie is non-linear and non-destructive, and the edits are actually instructions that tell iMovie what to do with each clip. You'd need to modify those editing instructions to refer to the new clips... but I have no idea whether this is really doable.

  • Can you 'force" change aspect ratio for DVD player 4.0?

    Hi,
I have burnt a dvd-r from my pioneer hdd/dvd recorder (630H). The program is in 16:9 ratio but plays at 4:3 on my powerbook dvd player 4. (All other dvd-r burnt via other burners appear OK however - so I guess this is something peculiar to the Pioneer) Why is this?. Question is: is there any way to "force" the apple dvd player to change aspect ratios? Thanks for any assistance.

I've got about 20 video tracks and one audio track all laid out and I've decided I'd like to insert something before the audio track so if I move the audio track everything else will be off.  Is there a way to shift all the video tracks and the audio track over to the right to make room for the inserted video?

  • Move rejected to trash doesn't work

I used space saver to reject videos that were not in the project or labeled with a keyword, and they are clearly marked as rejected. But when I click on "move to trash", nothing happens.
I really need the space on my computer. Is there any way to clear these from the iMovie memory?
The solutions that I find in the earlier threads haven't worked.

hi. similar problem here. i've marked whole bunch of clips and parts of clips as rejected. then switched to "view rejected only" and hit "move rejected to trash" button. nothing happens.. trash stays empty and rejected clips aren't going anywhere.
would appreciate your thoughts and solutions.
i have a feeling it has to do with the fact that these rejected clips are imported from iphoto (movies made with photo camera) and still physically stored (checked using "reveal in finder" in the iphoto library). But even if that's the reason it's still really strange imovie doesn't give a warning or explanation.
Aarrggh. So much valuable time for stupid software bugs..
    Thanks

  • Changing Aspect Ratio in FCPX 10.0.08

Hi - I think I must be losing my marbles because i cant, for the life of me, find out how to change Aspect Ratio during edit.
My rushes are previewable as full screen but once i pull them into the timeline they get letterboxed automatically.
I search online and came across advice to go to Sequence > Settings > Change Aspect Ratio, but i cant seem to locate it.
    Can anyone help?

  • IMovie: Unable to "Move Rejected to Trash"

When rejecting a clip in iMovie, I then found it impossible to move that clip to the trash. Clicking the "Move Rejected to Trash" button had absolutely no effect.
I found that the reason for this is that I had imported those movies from iPhoto, where I had originally brought them in from the camera. Closing iMovie, deleting the files in iPhoto, emptying the trash in iPhoto, and then relaunching iMovie solved the problem.

Any suggestions as to what is happening?
This seems to be a periodic bug for many users. Best advice is not to import what you don't plan to use. Unfortunately, it is not always easy to know which is which beforehand. If you haven't started building you project yet, you can always select the entire clip in the Event and use the "Contextual Menu" to reveal the location of the file you wish to delete. Then, in the finder, you can delete the file, delete the associated "Cache" and "Thumbnails" folders, close the application, and re-open it. Re-opening the application forces iMovie to re-thumbnail the event without the missing but unwanted file. (Have not tried this after using any of the Event contents in a Project as I assume it might break the project path references and I have never been that interested in taking a chance just to find out.)

  • Change aspect ratios

How do I change aspect ratios before I start a project? 4:3 or 16:9
I have looked everywhere and do not see it.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

Change the Easy Setup to the appropriate anamorphic or widescreen format. If you make a new project the new sequence in it and the capture settings will be in the format you assigned.

  • Changing aspect ratio in Final Cut Express 4

I am having trouble with the aspect ratio of my clips.
I imported from a camera to iMovie '08, then edited all the clips which I needed (about 10 hours of 2 minute clips). Then I bought FCE4 as I realized I wouldn't be able to do what I needed in iMovie. I imported all the video in 16:9, and have checked the project settings on all of the clips in iMovie - all are set at 16:9, then I exported them as Final Cut xml files.
I've now begun to import them into Final Cut, but they come in as 4:3. In the project properties I have them set as PAL CCIR 601, but I am not given an option to set the aspect ratio. I've tried setting it to 1.422 in the motion tab of the viewer, but it doesn't appear to do anything.
So, how can I import these files into FCE4 and preserve the 16:9 aspect ratio?

    Hi
    Did You try.
    • After Capture
    • Select a Clip in Browser
*• The Browser window can be extended to the right.*
    • Now more columns will be revealed - one of them Anamorphic
    • tick this for the selected clip
    • NOW drop clip into TimeLine (has to be done this way)
    How does it Play ?

  • Changing aspect ratio of copy protected videos?

I am attempting to watch a widescreen TV show I purchased through the iTunes store on my LG plasma screen. My usual setup is a digital video out and into the plasma using VGA. The screen in this mode only gives me two aspect ratios to choose from: 16:9 or 4:3. In 16:9 mode the image appears streched and in 4:3 mode I have black margins an boths sides of the screen. When I watch a widescreen video in 16:9 it is streched with margins at the top and botton and in 4:3 mode I have now margins left and right and top and botton. I therefore usually change the aspect ratio in Quicktime so that it displays correctly in 16:9 format on the plasma. Unfortunately the new TV shows in the store are not just copy protected but I now cannot even change the aspect ratio of a video anymore under "movie properties". So the only option I have is to use the S-video output of my old Powerbook and connect to the composite input of the plasma. While this gives me many more aspect ratio options (intrinsic to the design of the plasma) the picture quality is poor. So how can I solve this? I do not want to purchase Apple TV. I have everything hardwired and do not want to change that. I understand that the files need to be copy protected. However, Apple should enable me to change the aspect ratio of a video to be able to view movies at high resolution and without a distorted picture. Any idea how to solve this?

    Hi Sameer,
Thanks for your note, but the issue a bit different. Clicking the "fit page" and "fit width" allows you to change the zoom on the document, but the viewing area within the pod remains at a fixed ratio. So the document (unless the pod size is set at the same ratio) never fills the entire pod. Is this clear? I've added some screen shots to show what I mean more clearly.
As you can see, no matter what the zoom level is on the PDF (or if it's to fit width as the above screen shot), it's constrained proportionally (as I mentioned, I think it's at 4:3). Ideally, I'd like to get the PDF so it can fill the entire pod and zoom in and out. Is this possible with Connect?
    Thanks! Appreciate your help.

  • Changing Aspect Ratio Question?

I have just unwrapped and installed my new apple TV. Setup was the usual Apple synch
However I've found someting tat is rather iritating and wanted to ask if someone can help me.
When looking at the apple TV menue's etc the aspect ratio looks perfect on my 55" wide screen TV. and on my normal TV the current aspect ratio setting of the TV seems to work OK. I think I have it set to 16:9
However when I either play a netflix movie or play a movie from my itunes library the picture doesnt fit and loks more like a 4:3 with black bars down the sides. I can stretch it out and it loks OK, but its very inconveniant to keep reseting the aspect ratio of my TV setup every time I use apple TV.
BTW.. When I use the Wii to stream netflix it fits perfectly.
I dont see a menu setting in apple TV to change aspect raitio..
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    Steve

There isn't one.  Its output is designed purely for 16:9 widescreen TVs.  Any adjustments thereafter must be made on the TV.
If videos display incorrectly either the TV aspect ratio is wrong, TV is not widescreen, the stream (Netflix) is wrong or the local video file is wrongly encoded.  Of course if it's  a 4:3 film or TV show then it will display as intended with black bars on sides on a widescreen TV.
When you say normal TV you presumably mean a non-widescreen TV?  AppleTV is not designed to output to 4:3 sets hence no onboard adjustments.

  • Render changes aspect ratio

    Hey,
I am cutting a film about the history of cinema where I am using clips from all kinds of movies taking from dvd. Of course they all have different aspect ratios and most of them come in wrong so I change them with the aspect ratio slider. Now here comes the problem...once you change them they obviously need rendering and sometimes some of the clips which I corrected to the right aspect ratio then change back AFTER THE RENDER and are stretched or squachted again.
    Anyone came across this?
    Thanks

If it is to be shown on a high def screen 720x480 wont look any good unless its a dvd and you are able to upscale.
If its a high def projector the projector will still project it as 720x480.
If you want i to look good you need high def footage exported to high def.

  • How to crop canvas and change aspect ratio?

I'm working on a project shot with an old camera from the 70s. I used that camera but recorded the signal on my mini dv camera. Now I have a black border on the right side of the image.
This project is going on the Web, not TV. How can I crop the canvas (and change the aspect ratio) without a black border? I know there's a crop feature in the motion tab, but that results in same aspect ratio with black border. Is this possible?
(I don't care if the aspect ratio is non-standard, and I don't want to letterbox.)

If you are going to the web (what means you'll downscale at the end) and you shoot using an old camera, the loss of quality of the upscaling probably means nothing in your final web encoding.
You can make a test upscaling just some seconds of your movie an encoding it for the web to check the final quality.
    Hope that helps !
