Move & rename photos within Lightroom?

Two-part question:
1.  After importing a few thousand scanned photos, then adding appropriate creation dates and other metadata, I want to rename and organize the photos into folders in the same way the Import process works.  My import preset renames each file in the form YYYY-MM-DD-nnnnn where nnnnn is a sequence number, and where the date is drawn from the metadata within the imported file.
When I originally imported the scanned images into Lightroom, they had meaningless creation dates (1/1/1970) so I did not rename them at that time.  Now I want to rename each image file named 'foo.jpg' as YYYY-MM-DD-foo.jpg.
How can I select a large number of files and rename them all according to a rule like that?
2. My import preset also files the imported image in a folder/subfolder named YYYY/YYYY-MM-DD;  after renaming the scanned files, above, I'd like to move them into the appropriately named folder/subfolder.  How can I do that?
If I cannot rename/move the files within Lightroom, I could
a.  do these manipulations outside Lightroom... in the Finder, with other tools... but then Lightroom's catalog will not be able to find its image files.
b. export the images, then import them with my preset, but I fear I'd lose some metadata in the process.
any ideas welcome

Suggestions, there may be better ways!
Q1.  Select one or more images, Press F2
If [Date - Filename] pulls in the wrong date, create a Custom rename such as [Custom Name - Filename] and type the date as the "Custom Name" in your wanted format yyyymmdd.
Q2. Create folders with required dates (Right-click on a 'Master' YYYY folder),  Drag images with corresponding date to its folder.

  • How do I rename photos within events?

I know how to give an event a title but I'm looking for an easy way to rename all the photos within the event so that they, too, have a title corresponding to the event title but each with it's own number added to the end. This helps me for when I create a New Album and drag a copy of an individual photo into the album to identify which event the original photo came from. For example:
    Event Title: 2013.03.01 Drew's 11th Bday
Photo Title for each photo within the event to say: 2013.03.01 Drew's 11th Bday (1); 2013.03.01 Drew's 11th Bday (2) and so on...
As it is now, each photo just has the image number given to it by the program, so that when I drag a copy into a New Album all I see is the image number with no details to help me.
    Can anyone offer suggestions?

The only way to rename the actual file is to export the photo out of the iPhoto Library via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option with the option  File Name ➙ Use Title.

  • How do I move a photo within a cell? (montage)

    Hello there.
I am trying to create a photo montage. I have all my photos in cells on the page, but now I am trying to zoom in on and move photos around within each cell (sort of what you do when you upload a photo in Facebook). This was quite easy for me to do in Aperture, but I can't seem to find out how to do it in Lightroom. What am I missing?
    Thanks!
    Barb

    Hi Barb
It’s easiest to use the print module. If you choose Custom package from the Layout tab (top right) you will get a blank canvas. You can then drag and drop as many images as you wish from the film strip. Each image will show a bounding box and you can drag the corner handles to re-size. You can click in the center of each photo to move it. You can drag around the canvas and even overlap images if required. When your montage is complete you can print to file as a single jpeg.
You can also use the book module, where there are many page templates. The cells for book pages are fixed but you can drag images around within the cells. Book pages can be saved as PDF or jpeg.

  • Move/Resize photo within a mask?

I've been trying to figure this out forever:
When I drag one of my photos onto a placeholder image that is on an Apple template, it replaces it just fine. The problem I have is that I want to be able to move/resize my image around inside the mask until it fits just how I want it to. Is this possible?
In other words, I want the mask area to stay where it is and have JUST my image move around inside of the mask.
    Any ideas?

Unfortunately, the instructions here do not refer to the thumbnail photos in the photo template. Is that what you are asking about?
Aside from setting the maximum caption height, there really isn't a whole lot you can do to type more into those boxes. Here are some things to try...
    1. Make the caption font used teeny tiny so that you can squish more words in there. Obviously this has its limits.
    2. Try overlaying the caption area with your own text box. Then at least you can make it as big as you want. You may have to fill the textbox with the background color in order to fully cover up the existing caption box.
    Just some random ideas.

  • How do I move thumbnail photos within an event?

I've tried highlighting a thumbnail photo and dragging it to (1) another photo to precede that photo and (2) to the space to the left of a photo. In each case, it didn't work.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
You can't do this is an Event. Events are a very basic time and date based organisation. To change the order of things in an Event, change the time relative to the pic you want to precede.
Or... Make an album of the Event, then you can organise anything anyway you want. To do this just drag the Event to the Albums heading and it will make an album of the same name. As Albums only reference files in the Library they take up no extra disk space and have much better organisation possibilities.

  • In Lightroom mobile how can move photos within the collection????

In Lightroom mobile how can move photos within the collection????

What you can do is to move (or copy) a photo form one collection to another. This can be triggered via the top right app menu item from grid view. Same menu is available when you open up an image for editing. Hope that helps. -Guido

  • Cant move or rename  images or folders from within lightroom 5.

Lightroom wont allow me to move or rename either single images or folders within lightroom. Keep getting an unknown error occurred message. All images are currently on an external hard drive. Any ideas?

Yes. All images are imported into lightroom and editable. Green light is also showing on the folders tab just the same as with my c drive. I can move/rename images and folders etc from explorer but then have to locate them for lightroom to find.

  • How do I move the photos in iPhoto to Lightroom ?

How do I move the photos in iPhoto to Lightroom?  Thanks, I am a novice to Lightroom.

To access your Mac iPhoto images for use in Photoshop and Lightroom
    1. In the Finder, navigate to Users > [user name] > Pictures > iPhoto Library.
    2. Control-click (Right-click) the iPhoto Library file and choose Show Package Contents.
    3. A Finder window opens that shows the contents. The Masters folder (or called Originals folder) contains all of the photographs that are in iPhoto.
Photoshop cannot access this folder, but if you make a duplicate of the folder, the dupe will be accessible -- so:
    4. Control-click (Right-click) the folder named Masters (or Originals) and choose Duplicate.
    5. Drag the duplicate folder which is named "Masters copy" or “Originals copy” from the iPhoto Library Finder window to the Desktop.
    6. Open images in Photoshop or Lightroom from the file on the desktop.
    or
    7.  Rename the folder and move it elsewhere (probably to the Pictures folder), if desired.
Then access the files in the folder via Lightroom and Photoshop

  • How to move files between folders within Lightroom 3?

I would like to move a file from one folder to another within Lightroom 3 (let's not discuss why). I searched the threads but couldn't find the answer (maybe I missed it). When I click on a photo within grid view then drag and drop that file onto a different folder in the folder panel (to do the move), a little plus sign (copy) appears and a copy of the file is placed in the second folder. If I try to delete the photo from the original folder (to get the move), both copies of the file are removed. I've tried holding down all sorts of keys on the imac but cannot get the move to work. Ideally, I'd like to move a group of photos but cannot even move one. Does anyone know how to move files between folders in Lightroom 3?

Your suggestion works. Thank you for posting it.

Try selecting the photos, right-clicking the target folder and choosing
"Move Selected Photos to This Folder".

  • How do I move photos within a journal (ie from 1 page to another) in iPhoto

How do I move photos within a journal (ie from 1 page to another) in iPhoto

iPhoto is not very smart with multiple photos...
I don't think you can move multiple photos and I suggest the following turnaround, using the "combine pages" option mentioned in my previous reply.
    Create a blank page that you move next to the page(s) where the photos you want to move are;
then move your pictures there one by one (use the new page as a temporary parking space),
then merge this new page were you want to move the multiple pictures, using the "combine pages".
This would save time if your journal has many pages, so you don't have to move each photo through multiple pages but just to the next/previous page.
I just made this up but I tried it and it works!

  • Can I physically move photos within iPhoto

I have my photo organised in folders on my hard drive.  I then imported each folder into iPhoto as albums.  If I want to move photos around in iPhoto it doesn't actually physically move the photo on the hard drive. Is it possible to physically move a photo from within iPhoto?

    No.
iPhoto is a Photo Manager and you're not thinking of Photos, your think of files
It's a key distinction and one that you need if you're going to get the most of out of iPhoto.
The illustration I use is as follows: In my iTunes Library I have a file called 'Let_it_Be_The_Beatles.mp3'. So what is that, exactly? It's not the song. The Beatles never wrote an mp3. They wrote a tune and lyrics. They recorded it and a copy of that recording is stored in the mp3 file. So the file is just a container for the recording. That container is designed in a specific way attuned to the characteristics and requirements of the data. Hence, mp3.
Similarly, that Jpeg is not your photo, it's a container designed to hold that kind of data. iPhoto is all about the data and not about the container. So, regardless of where you choose to store the file, iPhoto will manage the photo, edit the photo, add metadata to the Photo but never touch the file. If you choose to export - unless you specifically choose to export the original - iPhoto will export the Photo into a new container - a new file containing the photo.
So iPhoto replaces the Finder for anything you want to do with your Photos - edit them (in iPhoto or anything else), email them, share them, print them whatever - are all done either with or via iPhoto.
Where the files are stored matters not a whit. Why? Because you never access them via the Finder.
(A caveat: you've chosen to run a Referenced Library. As an inexperienced user I strongly urge you not to do that. For some of the issues that might arise see  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3062728?tstart=0 )
    Some concrete exapmles:
You want to edit a photo in Photoshop...
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
You want to access a photo for uploading, inserting in a document, emailing etc...
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
If you want to manage files, then Photo is not the app for you.
