Move shared 'Users' folder in external disk USB

Hi Apple support, user,
I have a Time Capsule with 3TB and a Western Digital 2TB connected in USB, I actived the share disk with account  but I want to change the folder /Users in my extern drive (not in my internal drive)
I want to have the "Shared" folder in internal drive but "User" in my USB drive connected in my TimeCapsule.
Can you say me how to do this change ? I have already do/"able" this by chance but after restore of my TC I don't find how remake it.
Best regards.

I would only use TimeMachine as an add'l, not primary, or only method for backups.

With drives of 2, 3 or 4TB now why use three and the one time I used Apple's concatenate, no I didn't like the way it made use of drives. So I would either stripe or mirror, and maybe not even  using  Apple Disk Utility.

  • How do I move the /Users folder to another disk

I have a shiny new MacPro, dual proc, with four, one TB hard drives in it, running OS X Server on Mountain Lion.  The first disk is the startup drive, the other three are simply empty, partitioned drives.
I am to be the sysadmin for this machine (and a half dozen Macbook Pros) for my organization.  I don't want user data to exist on the startup disk on this machine.  Right now, the only user that exists is my sysadmin account.  I want the three non-startup hard disks to hold the user data.  I think that what I want to do is map the /Users folder to one (or all) of the other three hard disks, and get that data off of the startup disk.
How do I change the location of the /Users folder?
Assuming this is possible, or desirable, the next question would be about RAID.  I have not created any RAID arrays using disk manager yet (this Mac Pro does not have a RAID card).
Should I first create a concatenated RAID set from the three additional disks?  I see no advantage to striped or mirrored sets, I will have a HUGE external drive for TimeMachine, and disk access speed is just fine.  But, I think I'd want drives 2, 3, and 4 to act as one big drive.  I think the concatenated RAID set is the answer to that.
    Thank you,
    Jess

  • Adding movies to apple tv form external disk

I want to be able to add a movie to Itunes from my external disk and then to apple tv, without erasin what has been added in the past but is not in itunes any more.
The memory in my computer is limited and my movies are all in a external disk. when I add a new movie to apple tv, the ones taht are allready on apple tv are erase automatically because I no longer have them in itunes.
how do I add movies withour ersing?
    regards,
    Laura

you need to keep pressing the option key on your keyboard while you drag & drop the content. do not release the option key until you are sure iTunes is just indexing the files. for example, when i add a music track in that fashion, iTunes says +analyzing volume+ ...
another option would be to uncheck +copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library+ in preferences > advanced. now you could use the regular +add to library+ command from the file menu. you will just have to remember to re-enable this option when you want to add new content to your internal library.
for movies already copied to the library, and which you want on the external:
go preferences > advanced and point iTunes' location to the external. select the movies in iTunes and right-click on the selection. choose +consolidate selection+ from the pop-up menu. when the move is done, point iTunes' location back to the internal and make sure the movies where indeed copied to the external. if so, you can delete the duplicate movie files from the internal.

  • Copying Library folder in User folder to external drive

In addition to my Time Machine backup, I have always kept an additional copy of the contents of my user folder on an external USB drive. Tried to do this for the first time since updating to Snow Leopard and copying fails when it gets to the Library folder with a message that I don't have permission to copy this folder. With Leopard this always worked, but not anymore, anyone know of a solution, also is there actually any purpose in backing up that particular folder?

Does your external drive have any ownership flags for the folder you are copying to?
    Check out BATCHMOD try www.macupdate.com
Also do Get info on the external drive; on the folder you want to copy to, my guess is that 10.6 has changed something.
For synching a backup of user account(s) I would turn to a program, like SuperDuper, to keep current and let it handle these kind of issues, and great program for $29.
I use SD to copy (clone) the entire account, but ~/Library has email, prefs, bookmarks and all kinds of things you find handy to have backed up.

  • How do I move my user folder back to my main drive

A while back, I bought a 265 GB SSD. It was too small to accommodate both the system and my user folder so I moved the user folder to another drive.
Now that SSD prices have come down, I have purchased a larger SSD. I want to add this drive, install Mavericks and then pull my user folder back to it.
What I am thinking I can do, but would like input, is the following:
First, this is a Mac Pro so the old SSD, the new SSD, and HD containing my User Folder are all inside.
    1. Install Mavericks on the new SSD and create an account with the same name as the existing one. (This should create a new, relatively empty user folder on the new SSD).
    2. Use Advance User settings to point to the current user folder on the HD and reboot.
    3. Drag contents of the User folder from the HD into the New user folder on the new SSD.
    4. Use Advance User settings to point to the new User folder on the New SSD and reboot.
Does anyone see any problems with this? Any assistance is appreciated.

If you create another user on your new drive, then drag your old user to the Users folder, then create amother user with the same name, then it should ask if you want to use the current folder.

  • Move Mobile Apps Folder To External Drive?

    Hi guys,
I've got a MacBook Pro running Lion with all the latest software / updates.  This has become my secondary machine (since buying a lovely 27" iMac), and I'm using iTunes Match to keep both the MacBook Pro and iMac's iTunes libraries in sync.
Now that I sync my iPhone and iPad to the iMac, I don't have much need for the Mobile Apps folder on my MacBook Pro.  I have a lot of apps, so my Mobile Apps folder is ~50 gigs, and it's suddenly one of the larger items on the MacBook Pro's drive.  Would it be possible to relocate this folder to my external drive for the MacBook Pro?  I found an older suggestion (to move the Mobile Apps folder, and create a shortcut in the iTunes folder pointing back to me new location), but this didn't work at all.
Is this do-able?  As as alternate, can I just delete all the Apps from my MacBook Pro's iTunes library (from within the app) without screwing up the syncing or (via iTunes Match) inadvertantly deleting them all from the iMac as well?
    Thanks!

How to use an SSD with your HDD
If you are going to use an SSD as a boot drive together with your existing HDD as the "data" drive, here's what you can do.
After installing the SSD you will need to partition and format the SSD using Disk Utility. Then, install OS X on the SSD. After OS X has been installed boot from the SSD. Use Startup Disk preferences to set the SSD as the startup volume.
Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and authenticate. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on your user account listing in the sidebar and select Advanced Options from the context menu.
You will see a field labeled "Home dir:" At the right end you will see a Change button. Click on it. In the file dialog locate the Home folder now located on the HDD (HDD/Users/account_name/.) Select the folder, click on Open button. Restart the computer as directed.
When the computer boots up it will now be using the Home folder located on the HDD.
Another more technical method involving the Terminal and aliases is discussed in depth here: Using OS X with an SSD plus HDD setup - Matt Gemmell. This is my preferred approach because I can select which of the Home's folders I want on the HDD and which I don't want. For example, I like to keep the Documents and Library folders on the SSD because I access their content frequently.
Be sure you retain the fully bootable system on your HDD in case you ever need it.

  • Shared User folder "Ticket"

    I have just discovered a folder: {hd}/Users/Shared/Ticket that I can't identify.
It was created on September 24, 2010, and has not been modified since.
It appears to be empty. There is a user group named "wheel" which has read/write privileges.
The only other folder in Users/Shared is "Sonos" (for a whole-house music system, though i'm not sure why it needs to be there), which also has "wheel" as a user group (read/write). I am the only user of this machine (no other user accounts).
Can anyone identify this "Ticket" folder?
Is "wheel" a legitimate user group on my Mac?

    Hi
did you install any software on that day? - it's often used to store an activation or license key.
Is "wheel" a legitimate user group on my Mac?
    Yes, no problem with that.

  • After moving Music folder to external disk, iTunes and iPhone Apps gone :-(

My 70GB PowerBook G4 needed disk space, hence I copied the Music folder to an external backup drive, and from there to a tiny portable drive, and then deleted it on the Mac (gained 14GB of space).
When I ran iTunes, and changed the location of the iTunes library to the portable drive, none of the music files are visible; worse yet, none of the iPhone Apps shows up. So I don't dare to synchronize, because I am afraid that I may even loose the iPhone Apps on the iPhone.
    Your hints/solutions/suggestions are most welcome.
    Thanks and cheers,
    Veit

Thanks. John, for your excellent problem-solvers.
Since I had already deleted the itunes files on my Mac, I went the "TimeMachine restore way" and it works. Thanks! Good also to know that the iPhone Apps are always available.
Perhaps you know the answer to another iTunes/iPhone question:
On the iPhone I have some iPod music, but I hardly use it. When I sync the iPhone with the Mac, I'd rather just leave the music on the iPhone "alone" and only sync the iPhone Apps. But when I un-check the Sync Music box (in iTunes>Devices>iPhone>Music tab) I am getting a message that if I do not sync the music, the tunes on the iPhone will be deleted. How do I leave the music on the iPhone, WITHOUT syncing it with iTunes on the Mac (while syncing Apps, and perhaps photos)? Any suggestions there?
    Cheers, Veit

  • AppleTV: sharing aperture library on external disk

I moved my Aperture library from the iMac to an external hard disk in order to free memory capacity on the iMac. Adjusted the settings in iTunes in order to instruct AppleTV to use the Aperture library on the external HD. It fails completely. Checked the permissions of the library on the HD and they are R/W, so that cannot be the issue. Anyone familiar with what I have missed?

USB2 is a poor connectivity method for hard drives on Macs, adequate for backup where speed is unimportant but bad news for a Library. Aperture performance is largely about the Library, so you want it on a relatively unfilled internal drive, definitely not on an external USB drive.
Hard drives slow as they fill above 40% or so. Take enough data off the internal drive to maintain at least 100 GB free space and keep the Aperture Library on the internal drive with Referenced Masters on external drives.
In the future buy large hard drives (currently the 1 TB size is cost effective) that have multiple connectivity methods that include Firewire800 and eSATA. One good source is OWC: <http://www.owcomputing.com/>.
    Good luck!

  • How to use iTunes folder on external disk as F: when it was E:

I have my iTunes folder (organised) on an external drive, which has been E:. I am migrating to a new laptop, where D: is a virtual drive and E: is the DVD drive, so my external drive is F:. I can't change the letter for the DVD drive, so am stuck with F: I tried clicking on the .itl file, but as all the music is defined as being on E:, iTunes doesn't find it.
How can I get round this in the easiest way? The only way I can think of would be to change the location (with Keep Organised) on the old laptop to somewhere on c: (I should have enough space), then after closing iTunes, change the letter to F, then change the location again. However, I though I'd ask in case there's a better and easier method.

You should be able to change the drive letter of the DVD. I always change mine to Z:
If the library is in a self contained folder on the external drive then it will survive a change of drive letter. Note clickling on .itl file launches iTunes, but it doesn't change which library file gets opened. You need to hold down shift as iTunes starts to do that.
With a split library iTunes sometimes makes a good stab at relinking files if you correct the media folder location, attempt to play a file, track it down and then use the same location for other missing files. Alternatively I have a script called FindTracks which can help.

  • How to: Exculde the library folder located in the shared user folder.

Ive been told this is a hard concept to grasp. I am sharing my home folder, I want to exclude the "Library" folder from being shared. How do I do this? -Thanks you

In theory, you should be able to select the file in Finder, then use Finder -> File -> Get Info.  Then under the "Sharing & Permissions" section, change "everyone" to "No Access".
This would prevent anyone except yourself from accessing your HOME -> Library folder tree.  Of course if you mount your home volume using your username and password, then you will be able to access Library.

  • Moving User Home Folder to External Drive

I'm using 10.3.6 and over a year ago (maybe 2) I found a trick (in a magazine and on the web in a few places) to move my user folder to an external firewire drive. I haven't been able to find it since. In a fit of New Year's cleaning I accidentally disconnected the firewire drive while the system was running. Upon restart the system had created a new user folder for me back on the startup drive. All my files are still in the user folder on the FWHD.
I looked in the NetInfo Manager and it shows my home property as being on the external drive with the correct path. I also deleted the property and re-added it thinking that might make it take a look again. Nope.
I've deleted/renamed the newly created file. But it just creates a new one.
I've learned the barest amount about symbolic links and done
    ln -s /Volumes/Titian/Users/rothrock /Users
in the terminal. I've combined that with renaming/deleting the existing one, as well as either just a logout and login or restart.
I'm at my wits end and would really like to be able to have all my files and settings back the way I used to.
First question does anybody know how to do the equivelent of "blessing" a user folder?
If not, how can I set up a new user that has its home folder on the external HD and then just copy all the files back over? (My start up drive is way too small and I need the space.)
Sorry for the cross-post, but I'm thinking the Unix folks might not visit the other sections too often.

Of course as soon as I say I can't find the original trick I think I found it. But maybe not.
    http://www.bombich.com/mactips/homedir.html
I tried this, but the first command sudo ditto etc. should copy the existing user directory (on my startup drive) to the external drive, right? But it doesn't do that. So I'm a bit confused.

  • If you move files to external disk in PSE 7, are those files backed up when you Backup Catalog

My catalog is now about 50 GB and I want to decrease its size so that it takes less space on my hard disk and, more importantly, so my backups and restores don't take so long.    These are files that will not be edited in the future so why keep backing them up?  If I move files offline to an external disk using File, Copy/Move Files to Removable Disk will Elements backup those files as well as the files on my C Drive when I backup my catalog?
Alternatively, can I move files to a new catalog along with the assciated catalog data (such as albums, tags, etc.)?
    Thanks for any help.

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
If you use incremental backups, how often should you do a full backup?
No hard-and-fast rule.  The more incrementals there are, the longer it could take to do a restore.  I suggest starting out doing a full backup every 10 incrementals.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
I also backup my backups to a 2nd external drive.  Can I use PSE to do that 2nd backup (including the incremental backups) or do I need to copy the backup folders created the first time to a 2nd external disk using Win Explorer?
I think using Windows Explorer to copy them to the 2nd external drive will be easier and faster.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
I assume when moving to the new computer I just plug in the external drive containing the backup from the old computer (including incremental backup folders) and go through a normal restore.
    Right.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
When I do a full backup, does PSE include the picture files stored on an external drive?
    Yes.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
When I restore that backup to a new computer, does PSE restore the files which were on an external drive on the old computer to an external drive on the new computer, or would I have to move them from the new computer to an external drive  again?
I think that if you select the Original Location restore option, it will restore them to the external drive, but I haven't tried that.  You could make a small test catalog with a few photos and try it.

  • Horrible external disk performance

I have an ADS external disk USB 2/FireWire enclosure with a Western Digital 160 Gig 3.5" HD in it. It used to do great, now it's really slow. Using either USB or FireWire, trying to copy a folder with 2.34 Gigs of data in it from the external drive to my PowerBook's internal HDD consistently shows between 2-5 hours remaining after running for anywhere from 10-20 minutes. Playing mp3s off of it in iTunes will hang 3-4 times per song.
Here's what's changed since it worked right (though I think it's getting slower): I reformatted it and made 3 partitions. I made an 80 gig HFS+ partitions to hold a backup of my entire internal drive (80 gigs), a 40 gig HFS+ partition for addtional storage, and, disappointed when Disk Utility woudln't make a FAT32 partition, I left the remainder unpartitioned, with the plans of partitioning it using my friend's Windows laptop. It was for that friend's use that I wanted the FAT32 partition.
After that it was slow, and behaved kind of oddly. It would refuse to eject one or both disk when nothing but the Finder was running. Spotlight wasn't the culprit, for there were still no files on the disk when it started behaving strangely. But it worked. It seemed useable, and it seemed to work better when, using disk utility, I would unmount the unneeded partition. This is why I'm pretty sure it's gotten worse, because the data that I'm now trying to move off of it, was moved onto it without THIS much headache.
Disk Utility tells me that there's nothing wrong with the disk. The system.log is chock full of these:
    Dec 19 01:37:11 wendell kernel[0]: disk2s12: I/O error.
even when I'm not doing anything with the disk, just every 15 seconds or so when it's mounted.
More equally menacing-sounding things sprnkled throughout:
    Dec 19 01:35:58 wendell kernel[0]: hfs_clonefile: cluster_read failed - 5Dec 19 01:34:34 wendell diskarbitrationd[72]: mds [191]:18691 not responding.Dec 19 00:53:34 wendell kernel[0]: jnl: journal start/end pointers reset!
The fact that it happens the same way with both USB and FireWire, suggests to me that it is not my computer....Unless, the partitions on the disk might be confusing something. Is that possible? When Disk Utility reports that the disk is fine does that mean that the Hard Drive inside the enclosure is fine, but the enclosure could be failing?
I can't say for certain that the performance was fine up until the partitioning. It is possible that, if it is indeed an enclosure issue, the problem came when I moved internationally and plugged it into 220 V the first time. It is rated to accept a wide range of power, just like all of my Apple products that have given me no trouble, but 220 V still makes me nervous. It also may have started when I installed Tiger.
I still have trouble ejecting both partitions from time to time, but I feel pretty comfortable that it's the same problem...the I/O error is causing the disk to appear unresponsive.
    Suggestions? Ideas?

    Hi,
I just made the following test:
    - Backed up all data in my LaCie external drive
    - Erased the LaCie, and changed partition to Apple_HFS with Disk Utility
    - Copied back data to LaCie external drive.
My problem is solved . This external drive is really much more fast than when it was formated as Windows FAT32
Hope this will also help you.

  • In Elements 10 on a MAC how do I move my photos to an external hard drive to free up internal space?

I am running out of space on my internal hard drive on a MACBookPro and would like to move my photoes to an external disk and keep the catalog pointing to them. They are currently in nicely named folders and I would like to keep them that way. How can I do this?

Set display mode to 'Folder view'.
Staying in the folder panel on you left, click and drag individual folders from one drive to another.
You'll have to do this folder by folder.
