Move the iBooks library to external/different hard drive?

Hi!  Is it possible to move the iBooks library from its default location on the boot drive (where the iBooks-application also resides) to a different hard drive?
Currently all my ebooks and PDF’s are kept in the default „Books“-folder in the home-library on the SSD-boot-drive of my Mac where the iBooks application is also kept by default (path:  Users/„username“/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBo oks/Books). Space is getting narrow on my SSD-boot-drive so that I would like to free up approximately 20 GB by moving the entire iBooks library to a second internal HDD-drive of my Mac or to an external USB-drive.
I have not been able to find any instructions on the internet on how to move the iBooks library nor have I been successful in any of my experiments to move the „Books“-folder. What I have tried is the following:
1. I moved the original PDF-files away out of the „Books“-folder to a different drive and placed aliases from these files in the „Books“-folder. The result is that the iBooks-application will simply re-create a full size copy of the original PDF file in the „Books“-folder. I.e. no saving of disk space!
2. I copied the „Books“-folder from its default location in the user library on my internal SSD-boot-drive to a second internal HDD-drive, erased the „Books“-folder at the original location and instead placed a hard link at the original location. I verified that the hard link is working and pointing to the right location on the second drive. The result is that the iBooks-application will not recognize/show any of the PDF-files at the new location. Trying to re-import the missing PDF-files into iBooks results in the message „This book is already in your library. Do you want to replace it with the one you’re adding?“. By clicking on „Yes“ the same message returns infinitely often. I.e. no successes!
3. I repeated the same procedure as described above under 2. using the „iBooks“-folder which encloses the „Books“-folder (along with three other folders) with the same results as before. I.e. no successes!
(path:  Users/„username“/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBooks)
Does anyone know how to successfully move the iBooks library to external/different hard drive?
Does anyone have links to internet discussions about this problem?
Regards BJB

I was in on the Mavericks beta, when iBooks was introduced. You can not believe me if you want but it isn't currently possible to store the iBooks library on external storage at this time. The ebooks must be on the path ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBooks/Books for iBooks to function properly. Any other method you may find to accomplish what you want will be unapproved and could break at any time.

  • How do i move my iphoto library to a different hard drive

i want to move my iphot library / and photos to a differant hard drive. I have no room on my current hard drive, just way too many photos.

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • How do I move the iTunes library to a new hard drive?

The 600 Gb startup drive in my 2006 MacPro had gotten corrupted (however iTunes worked just fine and is used to backup my ipad and iphone), so I put in a new 1T internal drive and installed Lion on it and other applicatiions, including iphoto without problem.  Now I want to transfer all my itunes stuff, including playlists, etc to to the new 1T internal from my 600GB internal .  I tried following the support article "itunes for mac: moving your itunes Media folder" but it did not work.  I think the article assumes you are not changing your start-up disk and just need to point somewhere else to find the media folder.  Is there a directory I need to also move to my new operating start up drive? Anyone know what I need to do?  Thanks!

essentially you move everything under the Music Folder

To the same place on your new drive
Then hold down the option key while starting iTunes and select the location of your new library

  • Need to move iTunes Library to a different Hard Drive

I'm getting a new boot drive (velociraptor) and want to keep it lean so want to move all my media to a different drive -- I know I can move the iTunes Library to a different drive and go into prefs and tell it (iTunes) where the music is, just wondering if there are any "gotcha's" by doing so or is it pretty straightforward...???
    TIA,

If all of your music is in the iTunes folder now, then you can just drag the entire iTunes folder (the entire folder, not just the iTunes Music folder) to your desired location. Then hold down the Option key while launching iTunes. You'll be given a dialog box where you can select the iTunes library you want to use. Navigate to and select the iTunes folder in it's new location. Everything - playlists, ratings, etc. - should remain intact and all future purchases and imports should go to the new location on the external drive. Once you're certain that everything is working as it should from the new drive, you can then delete the iTunes folder from your internal drive.
Caution, though: once you do this, if the new drive is an external unit, make sure the new drive is connected and mounted before launching iTunes. If the drive isn't mounted, iTunes will automatically switch back to using the default location on your internal hard drive and will of course show a blank library. This won't be a problem, though; just quit iTunes and relaunch using the Shift key and select the folder on the external drive once again.

  • HT1199 Unable to open my I-tunes music library on an old laptop which holds two Ipod music libraries. Advice given is to re-install I-Tunes. If this is done, will the newly installed I-Tunes overwrite the music library on my computer hard drive or not?

If this is done, will the newly installed I-Tunes overwrite the music library on my computer hard drive or will I still be able to access the music library via the new I-Tunes installation?

Reinstalling iTunes should leave your library alone.

  • How do I back up my entire iphoto library to an external hard drive that I have dedicated for photos only?  Can I simply drag the iphoto library onto my seagate (hard drive) icon?

How do I back up my entire iphoto library on to an external hard drive that will be my second back up plan.  I already have one back up that is also synched with time machine.  But now I want to back up my iphoto library to a new hard drive to have a second copy. Can I simply drag the whole library onto the icon on my desk top?  THX

WHile you can do it that way, the next time you back up you'll end up copying the entire library again, and,as you'l see, once a library gets bigger that can take a considerable amount of time.
Try using an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

  • Moving entire iTunes library to external USB hard drive

My internal hard drive is nearly full. I need to move the entire current 10 GB iTunes library of songs, podcasts, album art, etc. to a 300 GB external USB hard drive with plenty of space. Within a few weeks I'll get a new replacement computer with a much larger internal hard drive and will want to relocate the iTunes library again onto the new machine. The iTunes Help Forum had some tips but explained "From now on, new songs & other items are stored in the new location. Songs you've already imported stay in their current location." That doesn't help. I won't be importing anything new until I've gotten my new computer and am running iTunes on it. Any help is very much appreciated.

Copy /Music/iTunes/ folder to the external.
To use this folder, hold Shift and launch iTunes.
    Select *Choose library*.
Select the iTunes folder you copied to the external.
Make sure the external is connected and ready before launching iTunes.
When you get your new computer, copy the entire iTunes folder from the external to /Music/ on the new computer.

  • Lion won't open iPhoto library on external NTFS Hard Drive.

Lion doesn't open the iPhoto library on my external NTFS Hard Drive. The caution window says: "The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it." This is weird because I have installed Paragon for MAC OS X v. 9.0.1 (Lion compatible) and Lion reads and writes files on the NTFS drive without any problem.
Before updating to Lion, Snow Leopard just worked fine with the same configuration.
I have tried to delete and tranfer again my iPhoto library to the external HDD, as well as creating an alias of the iPhoto library on my Mac internal HDD but nothing worked. Any ideas or solutions?

    I would caution you:
iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos.

  • Exporting an Apeture library to external USB hard drive

    1st step:
I can copy the library (25 GB)from the laptop to external USB hard drive (80 GB empty), but I can't use it.
I can't import any other project into the library.
The message is: there is not enough space on the disk. After that when I try to use the library the message is: the library is locked.
    2nd step:
I open the library from the laptop, I change the preference and put the new library on the external USB hard drive (same 80 GB empty).
I work with the new library and I try to import the folder into a new project but after few moments the program stacks.
I have another external hard drive (fireware) and I have not the same problems.

  • What is the best way to move iTunes library to a different hard drive?

I have a MacBook Pro and recently removed my optical drive and replaced it with an internal hard drive so that I can have more storage. My iTunes library is on the original hard drive. I am getting close to running out of space on the original hard drive and would like to move my library to the new internal hard drive. What is the best way to do this? Thanks.

A re-iteration of what I posted earlier... If you let iTunes manage your music for you then copy the whole iTunes folder and everything it contains to the other drive.  Hold down the option key at the same time as starting iTunes. It will present you with a window, one of the options being to open a different iTunes library.  Navigate to the iTunes folder on the other drive and let it open the library.itl file in the folder there.  In all likelihood it should open it with no problem and you will not see any difference between when you had it on your first internal drive.  If you get info on a track and look at summary you will see it is now referencing media on the other drive.

  • PLEASE PLEASE HELP-Can I move the entire library to a different computer???

My son has all his songs on my computer and I am moving it to my office. I do not want to lose any of his songs and mess anything up - do I have to download every song to CD and then upload on his computer?
Will his balance in the account transfer?
I want to delete all his songs off my computer?
I know this is probably "itunes for dummies" questions but I really need help if there is someone out there who would be so kind!!!
    Thanks, Jane

Couple things you need to do:
First find a way to transfer your iTunes FOlder from one machine to another. Then on your 1st machine, goto File Menu and chose Export Library... and save the file to your desktop.
Copy this file, Library.xml file to the desktop of the new computer.
Then, Open iTunes on the new computer, and make sure its a new copy of iTunes - nothing in it. Make sure you put the iTunes Folder in the same place you had it on the old computer.
Now with iTunes open, got the File Menu, and chose Import... and chose the Library.xml file that you copied from the old computer. Depending on the size of the old library, iTunes, SHOULD grind away and make eveything exactly the way it was on the old machine, including all your settings. you MIGHT have to reenter your account info in the iTunes store, this part I'm not sure is carried over.
If it doesn't work, don't dlete anything from the 1st computer until you know eveything moved over properly. Try everything out and play some songs and kick the tires.
I gave you the simplest route here - there are others that are more complex.
    Hope that helps.

  • How do I move my Itunes library to a new hard drive????

    Hi!
I recently installed a new and bigger hard drive and wanted to move my itune library to it. Someone here said that if I do that, I will have to manually reintall each song into Itunes. Is this true? is there a way that i would move it and cause minimal effect?
    Thanks!

You might find these articles useful, you can adapt the first one to an internal drive, the method would be the same only the way the drives are connected is different:

  • Moving library to a different hard drive

I have an Ibook G4 with 60Gb of memory that is quickly filling up with music. I'd like to move the music onto the external drive that I use for backup, thereby freeing space on the laptop.
Any thoughts on the proper way to do this?
    Thanks.

    To move your iTunes music...
    1 Quit iTunes.
2 Move the entire iTunes folder including music to the external drive.
3 Restart iTunes holding the Shift key in Windows, Option key in Mac.
4 iTunes will ask to Create new library or Choose existing library. Select Choose existing library and select the library in the folder you just moved.
5 Move the old iTunes folder to the trash but do not empty it.
6 Restart iTunes normally and verify the songs work. If they do, empty the trash.
