Move to External Disk and Delete?

Hi,
I have a external disk which I bought for the purpose of extra storage on my computer. I have in the computer's HD, many movies which I made from iMovie6. Most of these are ten gig each. If I just simply drag and drop the movies into the external disk, then can I delete them from the Hard Drive? I am hesitant about doing this, because if I don't do something right, then I may lose them all.
Thanks,
--Christoph

Select the hard drive in the Finder and choose Get Info from the File menu; if it is listed as being in the Mac OS Extended format, you can safely move the movies to the external drive and then delete them from the hard disk.

  • Moving Garageband Music Files to MyBook for Mac External Hard Drive on OSX 10.5.8  I'm a musician and need to make space on my mac hd. Is it safe to move music files there and delete them on the mac? Thanks!

use a MyBook for Mac external hard drive.
I need space on garageband or the entire hard drive, since I am getting the "need space on the hard drive" messages.
It's scary to move my precious music files!
How should I move them to the external and feel safe about doing so?
Or are there other methods besides the obvious, clearing caches, deleting the trash and downloads, etc., that are recommended?
I am doing music now and producers are waiting for the new vocals!
    Help!
    Thanks!

The process is as simple as just copying your Garageband project to the external drive and deleting from the macs hard drive. But before you delete anything you really need to back them up to someplace else also. Having just one copy is not safe. Get another external drive, DVDs or even flash drives, you absolutely need anything important in more then one place.

  • Move rented movie from external disk to internal disk

While at home, my iTunes library is located on an external USB drive. I've rented a movie while the disk was attached and of course it was downloaded to the external disk. But now I'd like to leave the house and watch that movie on the road. Is it possible to move the file somewhere on my internal disk and how would I let iTunes know of the new location? This seems to be a situation that many laptop users would find themselves in at some point... any solution/ideas?
    Message was edited by: sthmtc

I understand that it is because I rented. I just thought I would be able to transfer. I never intended to watch the movie on the laptop. I just wanted to rent it from there.
There are lots of possibilities for transferring rented material from Computer to iPod to AppleTV and back.... Just not from computer to computers.
I won't make an impulse "rental" on my laptop ever again. Too bad, since I use it more than the iMac.

  • How do i store my movies on external drive and then stream to apple tv

ok so I buy a movie and it is in my itunes library and stored on my computer.
How do I move it to a dedicated external drive (that is just for our movies), and still access it easily so I can stream to apple tv?
If I just plug the external drive in to my computer, will my itunes library automatically "go get it" from the external drive?  Or what do I have to do so it will do that?
Seems like it would be simpler if the apple tv just had storage so when you turned it on, you could see your catalog just like on netflix, etc..
    Thanks...

Using an external drive for your library is usually just a case of setting your iTunes preferences to use the external drive. However using the drive just for movies complicates things a little.
When you buy a movie it will be placed on your internal drive, select the movie in iTunes and ctrl click. Choose show in finder from the contextual menu that appears.
Now drag the original file from the finder to the location you have chosen for movies on the external drive. Go back to iTunes and delete the movie from the iTunes window, choose move to trash when prompted. This will delete the entry in iTunes and the original from your internal drive.
Now drag the copy you have just made on your external drive in the finder onto the iTunes window whilst holding down the option key, this will add it to iTunes without copying it back to your internal drive.

  • How can I use two different PC's with Lr5.5 to manage and process my photos stored on external disk, and exchange the analysis between these two computers?

I operate on two computers and would like to be able download  Lr jobs done on my laptop,  to my stationary PC, also used to process other images, all stored on the same external disk.
In other words I want to process may photos on two PCs and to to have access to all analyses from one or even better from both computers independently.
    Samek.

You need to put your photos AND LR catalog file (.lrcat) on the external drive, and make sure the external drive has the same device name or drive letter on both computers.
I have been using LR this way for several years and it works fine as long as you MAKE A BACKUP of the external disk somewhere, in case you lose or drop/damage the external drive which is easy to do.  Nightly, or sometimes more than once a day, I copy all changes from my working external disk to another similar-sized external disk.  I have lost a disk, once, and dropped/destroyed a disk, once, but recovery is as easy as using what used to be the backup disk as the primary one, and buying a new disk for the backup device.  It does take some hours to copy the 1TB of photos to the new backup disk, but once that is done, it usually only takes a few 10s of minutes or less to copy what is new or changed each night.

  • Unexpected disconnection external disk and different mount points

    Dear community,
I have an application that needs to read and write data from an external disk called "external"
If the volume is accidentally unmounted by unproperly pluggin it off), it will remount as "external_1" in the terminal,
and my app won't see it as the original valid destination.
    According to this documentation:
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203258
it needs a reboot to be solved, optionally removing the wrong unused mount points before rebooting.
Would there be a way to force OSX remounting the volume on the original mount point automatically?
or checking the disk UUID and bypassing the different mount point name (app or os level?)
Thanks for any clue on that.

    Hello,
Any help with this would be great. My Mac Book Pro has a limited HD and have a 500 GB external HD I would like to transfer a Movie from my laptop to the external HD and not have it on my laptop. THen when I want to at a later time pick out a specific movie and put it on my laptop. Basically have the library on the external drive.
Not sure if I am sounding confusing on what I want to do but hopefully some one understands me.

Drag the existing iTunes library to the external drive, launch iTunes with the Shift key held down, and point it to that instance of the library.

I do not have the time to read through your whole script and give specific answers, but the general principle is fairly easy.  You're moving with the Finder, so your move command is going to be of the form:
    tell application "Finder"
move file xxxx to folder yyyy
    end tell
For cross file system moves (which are as you point out actually duplications) just add a line after each move that sends the old file to the trash:
    tell application "Finder"
move file xxxx to folder yyyy
      delete file xxxx
    end tell
the Finder has an empty trash command that you can use at the end of the script if you like.
One gotcha: because move has two different behaviors, the second code block will throw an error if you try to use if for a local move (it will move the file properly, then try to delete the file it moved, which is obviously no longer there).  For clarity, I'd use duplicate rather than move for if you're working across file systems.  That's what you're actually doing, and if you use the move command you may confuse yourself when you come back to look at the script a year down the road.

  • How do I move my library to an external drive and delete the original on my local hd

i have final cut x and yosemite. im running out of space on my hard drive on my mac book pro. i would like to copy all my old libraries to an external storage space and then delete the library from my local hard drive. im nervous to do it incase i lose the files. what is the best way to do this? thank you in advance

If the libraries contain all the media - which is the default - then all you have to do is drag them to the external drive using the Finder.
In any case, start by dragging a library to the external.
Now open that library in FCP X, select it under "Libraries" and open the Inspector - you should see something like the picture below.
Most likely, for Media, the location is "In Library", which means that most or all content should be inside the library. To make sure, click "Consolidate". This will copy anything that may have been stored outside the library, so that the library is completely self-contained.
You can now safely delete the copy of the library from the internal drive.
Tip: one of the things that uses most space is transcoded media - especially optimized media. You can safely delete that by going to File->Delete Generated Library Media.

  • Want to remove pics from iBook and move to external HD, and have Lightroom 1.2 map to the external h

In an effort to keep my hard drive on my iBook G4 from filling up I plan to use the external hard dive for my pictures, and store them all on the external hard drive right from step 1 (upload from camera) to final version. The issue right now is that i have about 9k pics on my hard drive that I need to move over and have Light room map to the new location. I am also contemplating changing them all to DNG.
    regards
    AN

Just a word of caution when moving your image files from your iBook to your external drive. I have experienced database corruption when doing this at the folder level. I have a bug filed with Adobe regarding the problem. When it occurs it is pretty dire if you don't have a current backup of your database (i.e. Catalog) file. In my experience, the corruption can not be fixed by any method other than moving the image files back to their original location and replacing the database file from a backup.
The work around that I found worked fine was to manually create the folders on the new drive (from within Lightroom) to match the hierarchy (or a new hierarchy if you so desire) on the internal drive. Then for each folder on the internal drive select all the images and drag them to the new location. This is more time consuming but better than recovering from a backup.
Regardless of how you do it I would strongly recommend making a backup of your database file before you move the image files. Once you are done (if you do the move at the folder level) go into one of the folders at the new location and let the images render (either thumbnails or using loop mode). The corruption does not show up until the previews re-render. If there is a problem you'll see garish colors that you can't fix in the Develop Module. Note this bug only shows up when you are move images between volumes (different disks). If you move within the same volume it seems to work fine.
Hope that saves you some grief.

  • Music libraries, external disks and iTunes

We have an iMac with 1TB disk.  We also have a library of music which includes CDs, as well as mp3s purchased from amazon during our pc days.  I also have a lot of records that I plan to convert to mp3s.  What is the best external storage solution for music which is still accessible to iTunes?  I'd also like to access it by other devices (like a pc).

Load all the music into iTunes and then store the library on an external HD. Apple explains how to do this in:
iTunes: How to move the library to an EHD
As far as the "best storage solution" there isn't  any, however you may want to be more descriptive. If you have multiple Macs that want to store the library then it's simple, just turn on Home Sharing in iTunes and as long as the computer that's connected to the EHD has sharing turned on all the over computers can see it and use the library.

  • Steps to put itunes (50 gb) on external drive and delete from imac.  How would I update my ipods and ipad from the external drive if I do this

I am planning to put itunes library on external hard drive. My Imac is running out of room and itunes is 50+ gb of music.
What steps do I take to do this.  Also, if I do so, how do I update my ipods and my ipad 2.  I do back up my files with time machine.  This would be a completely separate new external hard drive.  Thanks in advance for any help.

    Two ways:
    1. After transferring to the external drive create an alias to the iTunes Music folder on the external drive.  Copy the alias into your Home folder.  Rename the alias to "iTunes Music."  Delete the alias from the external drive.
    2. In the iTunes preferences click on the Advanced icon in the toolbar.  You should see a field labeled, "iTunes Media Folder Location."  Click on the Change button and select the /iTunes Music/ folder on the external drive.

  • I can't send deleted files from i movie to the trash and delete them.

I can't delete files. I bought a Lacie big quadra 4T and allmy project are saved there (mode raid1). When I’m trying to delete files theydoesn’t go to the trash bin but they are not longer in I movie. Apparently  they are still in the hard drive using space. How can I delete them or send them to the trash bin of my Macbook Pro?

Okay I had the same problem but I figured it out.  When you go to choose file, all the links are greyed out.  Use two fingers simulatiously and click down on the file you want, then choose "quick look" from the option menu.  This will open a preview of your document and make the open button usable.  Close the preview, and then select the open button.
The site I was trying to use says it only supports IE, so maybe that is what causes the problem.
    Hope it works for you!
