Move to Tiger?

Hi,
Just wondering if my machine will support Tiger 10.4. There are things on there I want. I have a G5 and am currently running OS X 10.3.5. Will I have to buy this software and if so can it be downloaded? Thanks

I'm adding my problem to this topic....
I am about to begin helping my brother update/upgrade his 15" iMac flat panel (800 Mhz - I think). He is currently on 10.1.5 (or something close to that) and we are looking to go all the way to 10.4.
What is the best way to proceed with the upgrade? (I should note that he currently has software that he no longer has the install disks for)
Would it be best to track down a version of 10.2 or 10.3? If so, any recommendations or where I can purchase a copy? I realize I can also just purchase a copy of 10.4 and archive and install OR reformat and install.
I just need to be pointed in the right direction.

  • DV camera movie to Tiger - ?

Does one have to have iMovie installed to plug up the firewire cord of a DV camera and import a movie to Tiger?

Hooking your camcorder to the computer achieves nothing without some software that will record the feed from the camera. The same is true if you hook up a sound source, you need a sound recorder software. So, iMovie or QuickTime Pro will do this.
The iLife suite is NOT part of the OS. It comes free with a new mac, but not with upgrades to the OS. You'll need to buy the iLife 06 package to get the current iMovie.
    QT Pro is cheaper.

  • Move from Tiger to Snow Leopard Has Slowed Down MBP Fall '08

I had to upgrade to snow leopard recently to use new releases of some software I use (like MacSpeech Dictate). Since upgrading, the speed of my mac has slowed significantly. Expose used to happen immediately. Now, it takes 4-7 seconds. When I switch from one program that's already open to another program that's already open, it often takes 10-20 seconds to switch. Etc. I've been a mac guy since before the mac (used the Lisa) and I've never been this unimpressed with an "upgrade."
Is there something I can do to get back to a mac that works when I want it to work?

Sounds like you have some software which hasn't been tested with 10.6. See my upgrade FAQ* for resources to find out if this has happened:
    http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html
Downgrading is much harder, though is outlined in this tip:
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=6183892
Note, for a MacBook Pro that shipped with less than 10.5, you must use the original MacBook Pro installer discs, or a clone backup to restore your system to 10.4.11 or earlier.

  • Simplest way to move address book info from Tiger to Leopard machine?

I recently acquired a white MacBook that runs leopard 10.5.6.
I've not found an easy way to move my Tiger address book info to the new machine.
I tried copying the address book from tiger onto a dvd and subsequently a flash drive, but leopard doesn't want any part of that.
There is likely a way to export the vcards from the tiger app., but the help menu isn't much help in that regard.
    All help appreciated.

you can copy the folder /users/username/library/application support/address book from the old computer to the new one. then start address book and it will look like it did on the old computer. another option is to make one vcard. start AB on the tiger machine, select all your contacts and drag them to the desktop. that will make one big vcard with all the contacts. move it to the other mac and import it to AB there.

  • Other Computer's Movie Folder

I've got a Mac Mini in the living room, hooked up to a TV. It of course can watch all the movies in the iTunes movie folder as well as the movies in the regular "Movies" folder itself.
From my iMac in the other room, I can, using the Sources option in Front Row, watch the movies that are in the Mini's iTunes moivies folder. I'd like to be able to also watch the movies in the regular "Movies" folder. Is this possible using Front Row?

    Doug,
All of my computers have file sharing turned on.
All of my computers have iTunes sharing turned on and selected playlists, movies, tv shows, audiobooks are checked to share.
All of my computers have iPhoto sharing turned on.
When I open Front Row, I have to go to Source, Music, and then the movies folder on the shared computer shows up. However, it will NOT play a movie even though there is a movie there.
It says something like "there are no songs in this playlist"...
This is a lot different than the photos sharing.
You do not have to select a source for photo sharing like music.
Select Photos, then the next window in Front Row shows "Shared Photos" at the very top.
When I click on that I can view my shared photos from the other computer(s)...
It seems they should have something like that for Movies but it isn't there that I see.
I used to be able to watch shared movies with Tiger and Front Row.
I can no longer do it.

  • New iMac G5 mobo now can't print

The local Apple store recently replaced my 20" gen 1 iMac G5 motherboard. Now when I go print from Safari, Preview, Acrobat etc. All I get is a blank white rectangle and I have to force quit the APP. But the Force Quit does not says NOT RESPONDING. I can print from InDesign and Quark and can set-up new printers.
Very Strange. I am running 10.3.9.
Any clues out there? I tried to just archive and install 10.3 again but it won't boot off my 10.3 upgrade disk. Probably needs the original install disk. It will boot from a Tiger upgrade but I don't want to move to Tiger since I have some apps that are buggier under 10.4 than 10.3.9

    Hi guidingbyte,
When something won't work with Apple applications, but will with other software the cause is usually a problem with the common "framework" files (stored in your HD/System/Library/Frameworks folder ) which Apple applications make use of.
When it comes to printing the two "frameworks" involved are the "Application Services" Framework and, sometimes, the "Carbon" Framework.
First thing I would try in your case is downloading the 10.3.9 "Combo" version of the update from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxcombinedupdate1039.html (its a big download, but don't try to save time by using the smaller "delta" version), installing it and rebooting. You can do this while booted from your HD.
Run Disk Utility to "repair permissions" before installing the update. It would also be a good idea to boot up in "Safe Mode" , first, to force the disk repair routines to run, and then restart normally before applying the update..
    Cheers
    Rod

  • Help...will the transition be easy?

I am currently running 10.3.9 and want to make the move to Tiger! I am sure the main part of my system will not be a problem, but want to make sure the programs I use will work as well as some of the externals. Is there a list of problem areas when making the move to Tiger? I will make a list of my hardware and software below and if anyone knows of a problem with anything I have listed…would you please post.

I know there is a lot listed and most likely I can go to each manufacturers web site to find out, but like I have ran into before…sometimes they don’t tell you all you need to know. I know several people that have not made the switch from 9 to X, because of printer problems. I think most of those issues have been worked out and can’t see waiting that long on a change. I feel I have waited long enough to make the change to Tiger and hope that all the bugs have been worked out…at least from the stuff I use! My system works fine the way it is and if there are any issues with the hardware or software I run…I will not make the change. Also if there are any upgrades needed of the programs I have listed, that are required to make the program run in Tiger…that would be helpful to know!
    Thanks,

.can I add a partition to my internal hard
drive even though it has an OS on it?
Normally to partition a drive you have to erase it.
    I would try to
just use one of my other hard drives, but I don't
think the Mac OS software will let you install on an
    external hard drive!
I don't think there is any problem installing on an external firewire drive.

  • Having issues with my mac will upgrade solve them?

Hi guys with reference to my other thread me and the wife were discussing wether to upgrade our 10.3.9 to 10.4 (so she can watch videos on facebook etc) is it really worth it? if this has been covered elsewhere please forgive me .Thanks

    valeboy:
The move to Tiger is an upgrade, which involves purchasing new software disks. You can download updates once you have the basic software installed, but the initial installation is from disks you have to purchase. See Software update, upgrade--what's the difference?. In adition, your computer will need to meet the minimum system requirements for Tiger.

  • Wallstreet G3 top left quarter of my screen not working.

I have a PowerBook G3 (Wallstreet), and had OS 8.5 installed and running fine. I have recently upgraded to Tiger using Xpostfacto adn now have a problem with my display. If the screen resolution colour is set to Thousands I have different coloured lines appearing all over the screen and offset but following the cursor. When I change the colours to Millions the lines only occour in the top left quarter of the screen and still follow the cursor all over the screen. I have connected the PowerBook up to my TV using the S-video out and the problem persists on the TV too. I have tried resetting the PRAM and NVRAM but the problem still persists. I have even erased and re-installed OS 8.5, 9.1, 10.1 and 10.4 on seperate occcasions and the problem was happening on them all. Anyone know what else I could try to fault find?
    Thanks in advance.
    Oliver

    Oliver,
The move to Tiger will not cause a hardware failure, but the definitive test for a logic board issue is the same problem occuring on an external monitor and also when booting to a CD.
However, give this a try and see what happens:
    - If you still have 9.x installed, start up with shift key down (extensions off) and see if the problem persists.
    - If no 9.x installed, boot to your 9.x CD with shift key down (make sure you see the 'extensions off' message) and test.
If the problem is gone, you can use the powerbook by disabling the ATI extensions in both 9.x and 10.x.

  • Leopard Server Admin problem

I'm a bit flustrated with Leopard Server Admin - It gives errors like "Navigation operation cannot proceed" when click from one tab to another in DHCP/Subnets area back to another tab. This is one of the many problems. When I try to add Group in the Firewall, it doen't work, and things dissappear.
All in all, if this is what I have to look forward to in trying to build services using Apple's technology, no thanks.
    Comments!

Leopard Server is only in beta so it's normal that there are some bugs...
If are trying to use it in an productive environment you should move to tiger which works well.

  • Guidelines for Free Space needed to successfully burn DVD?

I have been struggling for the last three weeks to get a successful burn of an iDVD (7.0.4) home movie using my 2005 iMacG5Power PC, OS10.5.6.
The movie I’m trying to burn has the following characteristics:
Edited in Final Cut Express (3.5), 45 minutes in length, with 10 Chapter Markers, and containing a 50-50 mix of 4x3 and 16x9 video clips downloaded into QuickTime files from a Sony TRV70 (standard Definition) and a Canon HD Vixia HV30. Although the Canon original mini-DV tapes are High Definition, I captured them as standard def in 16x9 format.
From FCE, I exported the edited movie as a QuickTime, self contained “Sequence” movie file which has a total size of ~28Gigs.
I dragged this Sequence QT movie file into iDVD having selected the Version 7.0 Sunflower theme, proceeded to author this theme with JPG pictures, and with inserted favorite iTunes selections. The iDVD movie file fully authored resulted in a 1.8G “.dvdproj” file, and a 3.2G “.img” file.
I have ~52G of free space on my start up drive.
I have not been able to get through a successful burn whether I use iDVD or Disk Utility or Toast 6.0 Time after time I get an error message at the very end of the iDVD process that says: “Multiplexer Error-There was an error during formatting”.
I have tried burning the disc image using Disk Utility and with Toast with similar results, …….after about 4 hours of elapsed encoding time, the process quits and spits out the DVD media at a point that often is involved with writing lead-in or lead-out functions, or something that says no response from hardware.
To check software and hardware functionality, today I spent “testing” all of this by using a random 3 minute portion of the overall 45 minute movie, and produced successful burns with iDVD, Disk Utility, and Toast.
    Question
Is 52 G of free space on my start up drive sufficient for a Sequence QT movie of 28G ?
    Tougher Question
How does one check his original edited FCE movie for potential errors that could affect the final burning process? (I have checked CHAPTER markers for placement, and frame spacing on either side of markers)
The iDVD Project Info pane and Project flow map show no red warnings; I’m well within the size and time guidelines for Best Performance burning on a standard 4.7G DVD-R medium.
Help…..this is getting frustrating. I think I did a great job editing this home movie, but the only way I will be able to show it off, is to have the family sit in front of the iMac!! Up till now, I have burned many one hour home movies using Tiger and iDVD 5 on this same iMac. What’s going on?
    Thanks in Advance,
    BoBo

the less-desscriptive 'multiplexing error' message usually does NOT indicate not enough disk space.
    but ..
    check project
    • no involved file (audio, video, stills) should contain a 'bad character' in its name / | \ . … ; , ; ...
    • no part should be 'audio less' .. e.g. iPhoto slideshows without music can create such an error
    • you need at last 10-15GBs free on internal/if partitioned: MacOs-drive for using iDVD

  • Can I Trust External Hard Drives??????

    Hello,
I'm a newbie to the organization, partitioning and volumes conversation of drives and external drives. I just purchased a G-Drive 250 GB capacity and successfully set it up, transferred files, so far so good! After reading through
some of the decusssion files I am still very nervous to trust the external and
dump all of my transferred files from my Mac G4 HD.
Just trying to clean things up and get back the speed and space on my G4.
Also looking for reading material or direction to sources for quick tips for
basic organization and file organization in general. Just about ready to move to Tiger so I don't get too far behind.

  • Performance increases noticed?

Hi. I have been reading that Leopard now takes better advantage of the Intel dual core processors and thus we owners of Macs with this processor type should see some increase in performance if we move from Tiger to Leopard.
Has anybody noticed such an increase in performance? Is it something that would be meaningful to a human being (like faster PhotoShop processing of image changes) or just something that shows up in a bench mark test?
    Thanks

    Hi Mr Paul,
Leopard does feel ever so slightly quicker to me on my Mac MIni, but there are so many little bugs that kind of make it feel like there's a lag. The new glass dock doesn't always magnify smoothly for example which is nothing more than a simple bug that Apple will probably take care of, but it's something that I really notice and it just kind of takes away from that whole liquid, streamline feeling. The install also took surprisingly long, around 2 hours 20 minutes in fact (with DVD check), and permissions take for ever! It'll all be sorted though, so in my eyes, Leopard is, and is going to be even more fantastic =)
By about 10.5.2 or 10.5.3 things should be spectacular!
