Move to Trash, as used in Automator

I have a backup workflow that copies items to an external. After doing so, the workflow finds items in a folder whose kind is alias, and then moves those items to the trash. However, it doesn't move the items to the trash. As I'm using this in Automator, checking "Show Action when Run" doesn't fix the problem. Is this a bug, or am I doing something incorrectly?

Hi,
Try putting a "View Results" action (found in the Automator category) between your "Find Items" action and your "Move to Trash" action. Make sure the items are acutally being passed into the Move to Trash action. If not, the problem is likely earlier in your workflow.
Hope it helps!

Huh.. Interesting. I went back to check these proceedures and found there is a difference between using the return key or the space bar as the action command.
tabbing the blue ring moves the selection and then spacebar takes that action. The return key takes action of only the blue collored button.

  • ITunes no longers asks "Do you want to keep the original file or move to trash?" - Can this be fixed?

I'm not sure if this was a recent update in Mavericks, but when I used to delete items from iTunes it would ask something along the lines of:
Do you want to keep the original file or move to trash?
Now I no longer get this, instead iTunes asks:
Are you sure you want to delete the selected song from your iTunes library?
After which, if you choose the option "Delete Song", you get no option to keep the original file, it just straight up deletes if from my library and hard drive. Does anyone know if there is a way around this? For whatever reason, I want to be able to keep the original file on my Mac, without keeping it in my iTunes library.
I've tried resetting dialogue warning, and this hasn't made a difference.
    Thanks!

  • After 10.9.4 Update: Mail Messages Grey Out Upon Deleting-Don't Move to Trash?

    Hello,
After 10.9.4 Update/MacBook Pro with Retina display: Mail Messages Grey Out Upon Deleting-Don't Move to Trash? I believe I must join those who are having trouble with mail after this latest update. Deleted messages just turn a light grey in the message panel and don't move to trash until after I quit and restart mail. I have also experienced the screen "Freezing" ... no spinning beach ball, just the pointer frozen. This has happened only when I use mail and requires a "hard" re-start to correct.  Is this a "feature" of the update, or is it a problem? Thanks!

Some of your user files (not system files) have incorrect permissions or are locked. This procedure will unlock those files and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Back up all data.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -N {} + -type d -exec chmod +x {} + 2>&-
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
Quit Mail and empty the Trash. If you still can't, log out or restart the computer.

  • How to safely delete movies if I originally clicked Keep File instead of Move to Trash?

    Hi,
100 GB of my 250GB hard drive is iTunes movies, and I'm about out of space on the drive. So I went through the process of deleting the movies from iTunes, making sure to leave the "Also delete this item from iCloud" unchecked on the prompt "Are you sure you want to delete this copy of the selected item?", but I incorrectly clicked Keep File instead of Move to Trash on the prompt "Do you want to move the selected item to the Trash, or keep it in the iTunes Media folder?"
So my hard drive is still full and I'm not able to get back to the offer to Move to Trash. When I went to the Media folder and moved a movie to the Trash myself, iTunes would no longer start, giving me error 13014. So I returned the movie to the media folder and iTunes was able to start again. When I try to delete the movie from within iTunes, it now only gives the option to hide the movie.
Is there a way to safely remove the files from my hard drive without breaking iTunes?
    Thanks,
    Phil

No easy push-button solution I can think of.
You could export the main itunes Music playlist into a spreadsheet and use that to compare what windows explorer has.
Right-click Music in the itunes source list, export it as XML, and import it into a spreadsheet program so you can arrange it by whatever seems esiet to search on.
Another thing you could do, is create a blank library, import all your existing music and see how many songs are in the new library vs. your old library. For god's sake make sure you have the itunes preferene to copy files turned off when you do this, so you don't gets a bunch of duplicated files on your hard drive.
Then you could switch back and forth between your libraries to check things out.
    How to use alternate libraries:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iTunesWin/8.1/en/15502.html
Just keep in mind, itunes always tries to use the last library it opened unless you do the shift-start.

  • How to delete photos when iphoto9 doesn't respond to move to trash command?

The command "move to trash" works on some photos and events and not others.Currently have about 27,000 images in about 600 events.    MacBook Pro runs Snow Leopard ver 10.6.8 and iphoto 9.   I hit option & command keys when opening up iphoto and checked off rebuild library.  This did not solve the problem.   Thought it was not enough RAM and lack of hard disk space.  Recently doubled RAM to 4 GB and increased HD from 200 GB to 750 GB.   Still have the problem.  Tried to rebuild library again after the upgrades but to no avail.  Tried to delete event through the finder by opening up package contents in pictures and accessing data and noindex data and then deleing the images in the particular event.   The images were deleted but the event (now without pictures) remains in iphoto;  the event cannot be deleted.    Folks at Apple Store are perplexed.   Apple consultant ran out of ideas.   They thought that it might be a defective spot on HD but when the HD was replaced, the problem remained.    Has anyone experienced this problem?    How can this be solved?   Thanks,
    Explorer1

    You've trashed your Library.
    1. Before you changed the Hard Disk, how much free space did you have on your Mac? Running iPhoto on an overcrowded disk can cause database corruption - which would account for the symptoms you are seeing.
    2.
Tried to delete event through the finder
Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things,, deleting them or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
And even at that: you did it worng
and accessing data and noindex data and then deleing the images in the particular event.
That's trashing the thumbnails, not the photos. So the pics are there, as is the entry in the database but you've removed any way for iPhoto to show or mange them.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • HT4207 How do I move the trash can icon up to the top of my gmail bar on my iPad2?

Using gmail on my iPad 2:  How do I move the trash can icon up to the bar at the top of my gmail?

You can't with the default Mail app.  Try using the Gmail app... much easier to use and the Trash is easily accessible, even with lots of labels.

  • TS2755 how to delete email messages that won't move to trash

Mail messages won't move to trash. Mail account is used on 4  other devices.

Try turning the account off and on : Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars , then tap the account on the right, slide Mail to 'off', exit settings and go back into the Mail app, and then go back to Settings and slide Mail back to 'on'
If that doesn't work then try closing the Mail app via the taskbar : from the home screen (i.e. not with the Mail app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
Another option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
If you still can't delete them then go into Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars,  select the account on the right-hand side of that screen, select Account, then Advanced, Deleted Mailbox, and under On The Server tap the 'Trash' folder so that it gets a tick against it - then come out of that series of popups by tapping on the relevant buttons at the top of them and then see if you can delete emails.

  • Can't move or trash files

I hope this isn't something really stupid that I have overlooked or some feature I didn't know was on. I have been using Apple/Mac since the Lisa, yes the Lisa, and feel fairly confident that I know my way around but I'm stumped.
I have never had this happen before but on my MacBook using OSX 10.5.7 I suddenly can't move or trash some files. Not a certain type, some are .doc files, some .wmv files, nothing consistent. If I try to move a file to the trash it asks for a password, it then looks like its transferring the file, but then nothing goes to the trash. The file is still where it originally was.
I tried to just move the files to another folder. All that happens is that it copies the file to the folder an leaves the original file where it was. I CAN trash and delete the file copy that was created but not the original.
The files are not locked, the permissions are correct, etc. I don't know where to go from here.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

first verify your hard drive with disk utility. verify disk, not permissions. any errors? if not I would check that the permissions are correct despite what you say. are all those files in your home directory? select one of the files and do the following. open terminal and type
    ls -ladeO@
do not press enter yet. press space. then drag an offending file to the terminal window.
the result should look like this
    ls -ladeO@ /path/to/file
press enter in terminal. this will list permissions, flags and ACLs on this file. post the results please.

  • Cannot uninstall/move to trash

I am unable to uninstall/move to trash a program ("Voodler", for movies).
When I try to uninstall the program, I get a message that reads: "cannot move to trash because the program is in use/open". But it is not in use/open.
How to uninstall the program? Force uninstall?

Check Activity Monitor if a component of the app is still running (daemon or helper).
Then log out/back in or restart.
3rd party uninstallers such as CleanApp may also proof useful.
If "Voodler" installed using an installer, check the developer's site for an uninstaller (you should go there in any case for tips on how to remove the application completely).

  • As of the Yosemite upgrade, I can't watch movies or tv shows using iTunes or Safari.

As of Yosemite upgrade, I can't watch any movies or tv shows using iTunes or Safari.  I have not previously had this problem before, and I have not changed anything with the monitor.  Here is what I get...  (This movie can be played only on displays that support HDCP)  However, I can still watch Netflix using Firefox and Google Chrome browsers, but not with Safari.   (Using a Mini Mac with an LG Monitor Display)  Using HDMI to DVI Apple adapter.  I also tried a straight HDMI cable connection, which made no difference. My Apple TV plays just fine on this monitor.  LG Monitor Model #DM2350D

Never mind i guess. The iTunes parental controls changed randomly to restricted certain ratings even though i've never touched those in my life. fix your **** apple.
