Move Tool problem (i think)

When selecting an object and you want to move it, say 10mm up and 10mm down, how come on CS5.1
to move the object up, it needs to be a minus i.e -10mm to go up!!! Previous versions have been "normal".
Any idea's anyone.

Why did the Move tool in Photoshop Elements 8 stop resizing on earlier selected photos? It suddenly only resizes the last selected photo.

Good day!
A simple Paste does not work for you?
It should place the clipboard content as a new Layer which you can then move around.
If there is any chance that the elements need to be scaled, rotated etc. I would prefer to place them as Smart Objects (File > Place …) and do the masking that is specific to the images themselves in those.

• Problem with move tool? (Win 7)

On Photoshop CS4 , everytime I select the move tool and decide to move an object among a layer , it moves the object off screen , making it difficult to bring it back to the canvas to move . I know it isn't jumping layers , because only the object inside of one layer i moved , but ... am I the only one that has this problem ? How do I fix it ?
It doesn't only have this problem with the move tool , but with the text tool , marquee tools , and the brush tool , as well . The text tool would jump off screen , the marquee tool would position the marquee somewhere other than where I clicked it to be , and the brush tool would sometimes jump out of the brush outline . Can someone help ?

Standard questions:
Have you updated to version 11.0.1?
Have you updated your video drivers?
Is you video card compatible? See http://www.adobe.com/go/kb405711
Have you tried turning off OpenGL in preferences?
If the answer to all is yes, try resetting your preferences as described in the FAQ.
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/375776?tstart=0
You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.
This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.
A complete uninstall/re-install will not affect the preferences and a corrupt file there may be causing the problem.

• Photoshop CS5 - Image resize problem with move tool

Hi People
Here's my problem
When I try to resize an layer using the move tool (as opposed to the Free Transform tool), while I'm in the process of moving the scaling handles, the bounding box reflects my movement but the layer preview stays at it's original size. When I stop moving the handles there is a few seconds delay and then the new scale size shows up. If I try to move the handles again, without commiting to the transform, the layer preview reverts back to it's original size until I've finished moving the handles.
I didn't have this problem with CS4 and I've only recently upgraded. I work around this problem by using the proper Free Transform tool (ctrl+t) but it would be nice to know why the hell this happens. It seems to me to be more of a graphical glitch than a software preference but I thought I'd check just-in-case.

I also read you you tried updating your video dirvers and your syste crashed and you had to roll back. Make sure you have downloaded the latest correct drivers. If that does not work try turning off Open GL in photoshops preferences.
On my old XP 32 bit system CS5 movet tool with transform dialog does not fail like on your system. I can move the handles time and time again without commiting the transform. The only way to have Photoshop revert the transform back to the original state is to press the ESC key to cancel the uncommitted transform.

Illustrator (CS6, Creative Cloud) crashes when I use the move tool. No help here in the forums that I can see.
As far as I'm concerned this is a ridiculous problem that is so basic - it should not happen for the price Adobe charges.
Completely ruins workflow.
Please help.

Emily,
Just to make sure, are all the faces of the Verdana and Tahoma fonts installed and enabled/activated through the OS (not font mangement) as TTF (not OTF)?

• Problem with Hand move tool in CS2 ...

Hi,
I hope one of you here knows what to do about this as it's less conducive to my normal work-flow...
I have a Photoshop CS2 which I used to use on Windows XP and here it worked as supposed to. When I hit the spacebar the "hand move tool" appeared and I could move the images I was working with by left clicking my mouse and then move the image.
Now I've re-installed Photoshop on a new computer with Windows 7 (SP1) and now the "hand move tool" doesn't work anymore. The cursor shifts from the current cursor symbol to a hand but I can't move anything with it.
Given that it's worked before on Win XP I guess it's a compatibility issue of some kind - one of you knows what can be done?
Thanks for reading & maybe replying ;-)
Jesper

Can anyone verify that this is or is not a problem for them?

• Adobe Photoshop CS4/5 Crashes when using the Move Tool

Hello. I'm here because I'm having an issue with Photoshop.
I was trying out CS5 when it started to crash every time I tried to use the Move Tool. It was the generic error message: "Adobe Photoshop CS4 has stopped working.
A problem has caused Adobe Photoshop CS4 to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
Thinking that it was a CS5 issue, I went back to my copy of CS4, only to find the same thing happening there (I also downgraded because CS5 was also crashing at other random times for some reason, but that's an issue for another time).
This puzzles me because both were working fine before. Granted, I hadn't opened them for a while, but it was a sudden thing.
My first impulse was to uninstall and reinstall CS4. No luck. So then, I uninstalled all third-party plugins, thinking that might be it. Still, the same problem. I started looking around on Google for solutions and found the instructions on resetting the Tool preferences (I chose to reset the preferences for ALL of the tools). When that didn't work, I tried deleting the preferences file outright, which said instructions recommended. Nothing.
I should note that Photoshop crashes when using the Move Tool to move an object without ant lines around it, i.e., a layer. I'll move the object, and after two to three seconds, the mentioned error message will appear and Windows will close Photoshop. This, however, only seems to happen after selecting, copying, and pasting part of a large object with some variation of the Marqee Tool (thus making that part a new layer by default) while working at a zoom of 100%. So, in short, working with a large image like This at 100% zoom. The image linked is the image that I was using and am currently using to reproduce the problem. It is 1280x1024 pixels. I have tested this with somewhat smaller, yet comparable images too. Same problem. I have never had this problem working with large images before, and I wonder if anyone has any suggestions short of formatting my hard drive.

Even a decent RAM upgrade is usually only a few hundred dollars nowadays, but it's not a trivially simple process. That said, with a little research and care you can do it. Alternatively, you can hire people (e.g., "Geek Squad") to do such an upgrade.
First, you'll need to know what your operating system capacity is. For example, a 32 bit Windows system can really only use up to a bit more than 3 GB of RAM, while a 64 bit Windows system can use all the RAM you can find a place to plug in. What version of Windows are you running?
Then you'll need to determine what RAM you have installed and what your computer's maximum RAM capacity is - usually you can do this through internet research, either by visiting your computer manufacturer's web site or doing google searches. There are even RAM manufacturer web sites that will tell you what kind of RAM your computer needs and suggest sources, for example:
http://www.kingston.com/
It may be that you can just plug additional chips into currently empty sockets, or it is possible you'll need to replace the RAM chips you have installed in your computer to make room for an upgrade. Every computer is different.
If you list your computer model and current RAM that you have installed here, it may be that someone can help with more specific advice.

• Adjusting Text Height and Width using the Move Tool...

I have yet another question about using Type in PSE 5.0. I know you can adjust a particular types size by using the font drop down menu and clicking on any of the listed sizes or you can type in a custom size as well.
Is it though, ok to expand the Type/Text by selecting it with the Move tool and then enlarging it by using the selection handles located on the Box surrounding the text? I know you can do this, but I am wondering if you run the risk of creating a jagged look or pixalizing the text this way. The text is still vector based at this point, so I am thinking that it shouldn't be a problem, but wanted to know if it could look pixaly upon printing. I have found that I can sometimes get the text to look more the way I want using this method rather than just relying on changing the font size.
Thanks,
Lee

I believe you can achieve this by using the Move Tool, clicking on any one of the resizing handles surrounding the Box which the Move Tool creates when you select an object using it, and then just drag the resizing handles to expand your text to your liking.
If you press on a corner handle and press the shift-key at the same time while you drag, you should maintain the aspect ratio of your text.
But that's what my original question is above. By expanding or contracting the text in this way, are you running the risk of things looking jagged and/or pixaly. Is it okay to expand/contract text using the Move Tool or you should you only adjust by setting the Font size.

• Ctrl+Space (Move Tool) : Erratic behaviour?

Ok, I've been searching the net for an hour now and can't find the solution anywhere, I'm coming here for backup.
I've been using the Ctrl+Space shortcut for a while and this particular issue is plaguing me since CS4 (Scrubby/Animated Zoom introduction).
Usually, I use Ctrl+Space while on the move tool to smooth-pan around in a zoomed in document. But sometimes, it will zoom the document entirely out and allow me to drag some kind of marquee representing the size of my zoomed view so I can move around like if I were using the navigator. If it happens and I do not let go the space key, I can zoom entirely out and in at will.
It happens mostly when I toggle hastily between the zoom tool and the move tool while zooming, panning (back and forth) the document a lot so I must make a weird combination unwillingly (something like z+space or v+space maybe).
Anybody knows what is happening? I've tried all the combinations of modifiers and can't trigger the feature willingly.
It's pretty annoying expecting to pan away and instead being zoomed out entirely. It feels confusing... like some entity is sucking me all the way to the sky without warning, then tossing me back on the ground somewhere I definitely didn't expect to be.
Thanks.
Edit:
Ok I've found some kind of a trail:
Temporarily zoom an image
Hold down the H key, and then click in the image and hold down the mouse button. The current tool changes to the Hand tool, and the image magnification changes as follows:
If the entire image originally fit within the document window, the image zooms in to fit the window.
If only a portion of the image was originally visible, the image zooms out. Drag the zoom marquee to magnify a different part of the image.
Release the mouse button and then the H key. The image returns to the previous magnification and tool.
Source: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/photoshop/cs/using/WSfd1234e1c4b69f30ea53e41001031ab64-74e0a.h tml#WSA6DF9C40-CEA8-4cfd-9A8B-44108E2975DD
Seems like my combination of keys leaks to this feature: If I hold out H while dragging the mouse, it gives out the exact same behaviour I try to avoid but in my case, it happens when I press Space.
If anyone understands why my Space key behaves like the H key sometimes erratically, I'd really appreciate it.

Yes thank you Dennis. Got to appreciate that expressing something externally often allows to find solutions just by thinking outside the normal train of thoughts.
I've also found out that if you are on any other tool but the move tool, pressing V+Space somehow "leaks" the H shortcut and mimics the behaviour. My particular problem does not require me to hold V (Only Space) but I expect it is a related issue.
Well, no solution possible in the near future except stop going all "Speedy Gonzales" on my shortcuts.
At least now we know how to reproduce the issue.

• Text Tool becomes Move Tool

I started learning Photoshop CS4 about a month ago. One of the first things I learned was to add text. Simple, fun. I am now trying to learn about layer masks. One of the exercises in one of my books is to open an image and then add text to it. (The idea is to then add a mask and 'hide' portions of the text behind portions of the image.) A really strange thing is happening when I try to add text. I highlight the image in the layers column. (Prior to adding any mask layers.) I then click the text tool. But when I click on the image (in the area where I want the text), the text tool 'becomes' a move tool. A text layer pops up and the words I'm trying to type on the image come out in the title area for the layer (in the layers column). I've tried everything I can think of to 'get' the text on the image but can't solve it. (And this has been a SIMPLE activity for a month!) Can anyone exlain what's going on? Thanks!

david h armitage wrote:
I tried 'committing' the text but it didn't seem to make any difference. (I checked the 'tick' symbol and still couldn't see anything on the image. The text layer, however, was 'titled' with the text I typed into the image.) Here's one thought . . . yesterday when I was having trouble I wondered if the font size was the problem. The font size was 48 when I clicked the text tool. I thought that was a reasonable size. In the course of trying to solve my problem (including resetting the text tool in the drop down menu) I resized the font to 300. Then I could just see it. I ended up with a font size of 400! I wonder if the text has always been there but it was so small in relationship to the size of my image, it couldn't be displayed. Is that possible?
It sounds as if your image resolution is so extreme that the text is not visible.
Look in Image > Image size and tell us the resolution
