[Athlon64] K8N Neo4 Bios ver 1.50 eats batteries

Hi, Takesix.
Unfortunately, you are not the only person with this problem.  I purchased a non-SLI version of this board about 6 weeks ago and am on my third battery, all from different manufacturers.  The board was originally flashed with V1.50 but I flashed it to v1.30 because I had read that it was a better version.  This has not stopped the draining battery problem.  Have e-mailed MSI and Monarch Computer tech support hoping to get an answer but haven't received any replys yet.  To read others strories go to the following link.     https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=84120.0  Incidentally, how old is your board?  Wonder if it was a specific lot?

As far as I know, ddr2 will not be supported by AMD until next year - so we can all upgrade again!  You have to go with ddr if you want them to work with mobos designed for AMD chips.  Just my 2 cents.

  • K8N Neo4 BIOS 1.8 hates my harddrive

Okay, hi everone. I've seen a couple of threads on problems that seem similar to mine, but guessworks and assumptions are what got me where I am, so I'll ask specifically. I'm just half-educated in hardware matters (the worst kind, I know), so be gentle please.
Alright, so originally I was having a problem with my system restarting after shutdown, so I tried downloading upgrades for my motherboard (K8N Neo4 Platinum). The Liveupdate utility gave me BIOS 1.8, which I used through the windows GUI, apparently successfully. Well, until I restarted at least. Now, my main HD (listed by the BIOS as SAMSUNG SP1614C) has changed position from primary master to third master and whenever I try to move it to the top of the boot sequence, I get a blue screen crash, informing me that this is for my own safety and I should run "chkdsk" (however I should manage that). I'm pretty sure it's not the HD that developed an error all of a sudden. Sometimes I get the option of trying safe mode, which of course changes nothing. The flash utility made a floppy, but it seems that's just for putting the same BIOS back on.
    What should I do?

I had that "chkdsk" message quite a few times along "restart" & "shutdowm" and overclock problems. the "chkdsk", "restart" & ""shutdown" stuff was solved by retiring Themaltake 430w PSU. The Tagan PSU and bios 1.6 allow me to overclock the way I want.

Fantastic!!! Now explain this to me.  My bios shows as ver. 1A.  MSI website does not show a ver 1A!!   B, C, and D, but no A!!!!  LOL
Seriously, thanks.   I was wondering if it had anything to do with it purportedly being refurbished.
    orlbuzz
Yes, it has been removed due some reason.

Yes, lol.   W7125NMS V1.A   I forget the date, but I do remember it is 05.
    orlbuzz
Yes that's correct, but not 7125{Neo4}, 7025 instead is for Neo2.

  • K8n NEO4 bios update to 1D: audigy + pci modem = no start (not even video signal

I updated my old 1.4 bios (alredy updated once) to 1D. The system was running fine but i was preparing for dual core update.
After bios update the neo4 was like dead. Not even video signal.
I removed both SB audigy and pci adsl modem and it started as usual.
If i add 1 pci card only (audigy OR PCI modem) the system works, while if i add BOTH the cards it is dead.
Changing slots did not solve the problem.
System is running with defaults values.
Any bios setting? do i have to go back to 1.4, 1.5 or 1.6 bios to use an athlon 64 X2 4800+?
    Thx

Modded bios doesn't add cpu id code .
    murdoK has a mod of 7125 here : http://msi-forum.de/thread.php?threadid=24337
    4800 X2 supported since 1D according to this :

  • K8N Neo4 BIOS 1.4, SATA

After updating the BIOS to v.1.4, I can't install Windows XP anymore. The installer complains that I have no hard drive. In fact, I have two Seagate SATA HDs. I had to downgrade to v.1.2. What is the problem of v.1.4, or Windows?

If it helps any, my new system has been solid using 3.1, ever since I built it, two months ago.  Yesterday, hoping to fix sporadic Battlefield 2 demo crashes, I went ahead via MSI Live Monitor, and flashed my bios to 3.4 (these bios numbers can be confusing, but I'm pretty sure 1.4 = 3.4).
For me, this was a very bad idea. With 3.4, I thought it wasn't even seeing my sata drives, but realized if I let the system sit, it would go ahead and boot after a long boot time, roughly 3 minutes (and the system gave a flurry of "new hardware found" activity, too quickly for me to see what all it modified).  I tried everything, clearing CMOS, turning off everything in the bios that I didn't use, and etc.  No matter what I did, I got that 3 minute boot-up, like the bios was trying to init something that wasn't there, and finally timing-out and booting from my hard drive.  And, during the 3 minutes, the LEDs on the debug bracket were all four lit, indicating that the OS was booting.
Also, the SIL 3231 sata controller no longer had a driver associated with it in Device Manager.  No matter what I tried, I couldn't fix it short of re-installing Windows XP, which I wasn't about to do for now.
When I looked at System Information, I saw that the bios change had changed a whole bunch of starting addresses, of nearly every system component.  That seemed really strange to me.
Finally this morning, I flashed the bios back to 3.1, and everything is working fine again.  The system boots up normally again, nice and fast, my SIL 3231 sata controller's driver is recognized again, and all is well.  In System Information, I see that all of the starting addresses have been put back to what they were.
Take it for what it's worth.  As for me, I won't be upgrading my bios again anytime soon, unless I can figure out what the problem was.

I just flashed my bios to version 1.8....i cant it to post past the windows xp boot screen.....anyone know why and what i can do??!!?!
Everything was fine before running 1.5....
I read a thread somewhere in this forum saying 1.8 is good if you have Sempron (E6?). If by some reason you have to flash 1.8, search for User syar2003's post. I followed his procedures and I flashed 1.6 successfully. Bios 1.5 gave me a lot of troubles.

  • K8N Neo2 Bios ver 1.9

Hi! I upgraded to version 1.9 of the bios and it seems as if I have lost settings in areas such as 'Advanced Settings' or something in the bios. Have i flashed the bios incorrectly or is this meant to be like this?
Should I downgrade to 1.8 or wait for a new version to be released?
    Thanks!

    MrcodMan:
A new bios update is supposed to include the things fixed in all previous updates of the bios.  There are problems when the new bios includes the old changes and adds some new changes that create problems.  You should not flash to a new bios if your system is running fine on the old bios.  You should not flash to a new bios if your system is not stable.  When the new bios (in notes or comments) says it will fix something that is wrong with your machine, it makes sense to flash, but it is best to wait and see what others have found if you are not sure.
    Hope that answers the question.

  • K8N Neo4 hangs after bios update

    Here is my situation:
Onboard ethernet seemed to die last night so I plugged in a usb wifi adpater - worked fine.  Ran Live Update and updated the bios in windows (Not sure the version) and it seemed to install ok but hung at the "Restarting Windows" screen.
After a manual restart, it seems to start going through the motions but then gets to something like "NTLoader not available" and gives the option to restart.
I can get into the bios setup and all of my drives master/slaves appear to be there and I know it can see the floppy drive as I stuck one in and got the "Non system disk" message.
Would creating an ms-dos install disk and a disk with the latest K8N Neo4 bios be my next setp?
    Thx!
    WH

if you're still having problems, try unhooking the sata's/ide's for all the drives except c: or whatever has the os. let it boot once, then rehook em up.
i just updated to the 1.50 bios on a neo4-f and it was trying to boot windows off the secondary ide drive even tho it's 2nd in order.

    Hello !
    Strange Problem.....
You mentioned Problems with your boot-sequence and your Raid Setup. I don´t know exactly but it think this is connected with your SLI Problems. Which Bios Version are you using ? Did you try to make a CmosClear for reinitialising PNP and DMI stuff ? You should also check your Cmos onboard Battery, perhaps its empty.
I have heard about a Problems with this some revisions of this Board, Onboard Battery is emptying very fast sometimes.
    Good Luck

Yes I managed exactly that. I've been out of the computer building business for a while so I didn't know the graphics ports had changed.
I will invest in a graphic card as well, thanks for putting me on track
(The manual sais something about the port supporting 8x agp though? )
