MOVED: computer builds for home cinema...

This topic has been moved to Off-Topic Technical.

Hi,
Based on the specs of the LG unit:
(a) SCART to VGA: Most likely the signal frequency on VGA port of a normal computer monitor does not match the signal frequency of the SCART port therefore you can't get the pictures/images.
(b) SCART to DVI: you need more than just a cable, you need a converter because SCART uses analog signals and DVI use digital signals.
Regards.

Isn't the five computer limit for home sharing restrictive given the many devices one household may have?

It is only restrictive if you have more than 5 computers.
Otherwise it is not restrictive at all.
devices do not count, only computers.
You have more than 5 computers on the same home network.

  • Computer Build for CS5,

    Hi,
I was wondering if anyone would be able to check this computer build and make any recomendations. I am about to start video editing, in both DV and HD. I don't need the best system as it isn't for work, and I would like to try and keep the price down, however it would be nice to 'future proof" it.
This is what I was quoted so far:
    CPU Intel Core i7 950 [3GHz/4.8GT QPI/8MB/LGA1366] [BX80601950] 1 359.00
    Motherboard Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5 [Intel X58/LGA1366/DDR3/ATX] 1 359.00
    RAM Kingston 6GB Kit (3x2GB) DDR3 PC-10600 1333MHz DIMM [KVR1333D3N9K3/6G] 2 189.00
    Hard Disk Drive Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 3.5" 1.5TB 7200rpm 32MB SATA [ST31500341AS] 1 109.00
    Hard Disk Drive OCZ Vertex 2 (E) 2.5" 60GB SATAII Solid State Drive [OCZSSD2-2VTXE60G] 1 199.00
Power Supply Antec TruePower 650W ATX Power Supply [TP- 650] 1 149.00
Case Antec P183 "Performance One" Black Midi Tower No PSU 1 185.00
MicroSoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit DVD OEM 1 169.00
Graphics Card Leadtek NVIDIA Quadro FX 580 512MB DDR3 PCI- Express 1 275.00
    DVDRW and BLURAY Drives LG 22x Internal DVD±RW SATA - OEM – Black [GH22NS50] 1 39.00
I read somewhere here that it would be better with Microsoft Windows 7 Pro. I am also a bit unsure about the graphics card: a friend said to downgrade and save money, or is it better to upgrade to a Gigabyte NVIDIA GeForce GTX470 1280MB GDDR5 PCI-Express2.0 [N470UD-13 or something similar.
If anyone has anytime to make any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.
    Jimmy

    Jimmy,
The FX 580 is a waste of money. Get either the GTX 460 or 470.
Up the memory to at least 12 GB, either 6 x 2 or preferably 3 x 4 GB, so you have future room to grow.
The PSU is a bit small, 650 W is probably not enough. Look here eXtreme Power Supply Calculator Pro v2.5
and get the Pro version, set CPU load to 100% and capacitor aging to 30% and then add 10 - 15% for safety.
Get a big tower instead of a midi tower. Better cooling, more expansion room, easier installation and better cable management.
Get some more disks. Look here: Adobe Forums: Generic Guideline for Disk Setup
    Use Win7 Pro.
    Consider a BR/DVD burner.

  • Blu Ray on iMAC for home cinema ?

Has anyone been able to get Blu ray to work on their mac?
I use Plex on my intel mac as a data source for my home cinema set up which works really well after I have ripped my DVD's to hard drive. I notice that Plex can also play .MKV high def files very well.
I currently play blu ray discs through my kids PS3 which is in the other room but I really want to play them from the hard drive on my mac through Plex onto my big screen.
So my question is - is it possible to get an external blu ray disk reader to connect to my imac ? and if so which one ?
Also, what is good software - eg - handbrake/mac the ripper etc to convert the blu rays so I can store them on my hard drive?
I read somewhere about Macs not being able to handle bluray as PC's do ? I also have linux ubuntu but no windows PC's and I really don't want to turn to the dark side (Windows's) for this one.
    Any ideas much appreciated ?
Please don't waste your time telling my to move my PS3 and other such solutions... and yes I do own the disks.......
    thanks in advance.
    Richard

Apple computers cannot play Blu-Ray disks natively due to the format not being supported by the hardware or OS X software..
    Hope this helps

I have a modest bit of experience as I RIP Blu-Ray, and produce Blu-Movies from FCP from my own source HD material.
for ripping commerical Blu-Rays, bite the bullet and use SlySofts, software. Yes it runs on WinXP; but it runs. You create an ISO image and can then txfer to your Mac and burn using, wait-for it, Toast Titanium (with BD plug-in).
As for Blu-Ray Burners, I recommend Plextor. They come with fireWire 400 and USB2, so you can use them cross-platform. OS X 1.05 will see it, and as I said above, Toast can burn to it.
Yes they cost twice as much as an LG or similar; but I very rarely get a duff disk. I burn about 20 disks/month, both video and data, and lose about 1-2 disks. Other BD Drives I've tried have almost 3 times that failure rate. It's still not what I would call a stable technology, much like DVD writing was 10 years ago.
If you want to rip and then play on a Mac, you will probably need to transcode to Quicktime. Not sure how to do this, but you've got me thinking....
    Hope this helps

  • New computer build for video editing, daily use of Premiere Pro, what do you all think ?

I'm building a new PC for using video editing softwares with because my old one is getting tired. I'd like to know what people think of that configuration. I plan on using this computer with the latest versions of After Effects and Premiere, i'm also beginning to learn Cinema 4D.
    ASUS Sabertooth Z97 MARK2
    Corsair Vengeance 1866 DDR3 RAM (4x8gig)
    Barracuda 2TB (x2)
Intel Core i7-4790k Haswell Quad Core 4.0Ghz
EVGA GeForce GTX 780 Ti Dual 3GB w/ EVGA ACX Cooler
    Cooler Master HAF 932 Case.
Power Supply ? Dunno what's good and durable here, care to help me what to choose ?
Those things combined are pretty much maxing out my budget so i'm open to changing something for something else if it's worth it and not twice the price of it.
    Thanks !!

  • Is there any way to increase the 5 computer limit for Home Sharing?

We now have 9 computers all looking to access the same media purchased / stored on the same iTunes library?  Is there any way to increase beyond the 5 computer limit?
    Our home setup includes:
    2 iMacs
    2 MacBooks
    3 Mac minis
    2 Home Theatre PCs

Can't offer any help, only tell you that I'm also wondering this as we now have 11 computers in our home.

  • Computer Build for PS CS5

Just wondering what you think.  The computer will be over clocked to about 5.0 and still be stable.

Buy a USB hard drive, and make a full, compressed image to the external
Hardware crashes or virus infections happen, so you should buy AND USE software to make a full backup of your hard drive to an external USB hard drive... plus, making step-by-step backups during a new install or major program addition makes it easy to go back a step if something
    doesn't work
This backup and then restore is, of course, only to the same computer with a new drive (or the same drive as long as you don't mind writing
over everything) since doing a restore to a new computer won't work due to Windows and many programs having activation information that is
keyed to your hardware (which is why Windows will force you to RE-Activate if you change very much hardware)
The product I use is at http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/image-for-linux.htm
Image runs off of a bootable CD via Linux (the Zip you download includes a program to make the bootable CD) and it reads EVERYTHING on the
drive, even the hidden registration information, so everything is restored when needed... and you may restore the image to a brand new
drive in case of a crash, and not have to re-install anything
Please note that I own no part of Image, and I don't get a referral fee (that is just a plain web link) but I use the program and it has
saved me a LOT of trouble when I had a hard drive die... and I was able to restore everything and not have to re-install or re-activate a
single program, from Windows on up

  • Yes, another computer build but with a specific purpose.

Firstly, I thankyou if you have even opened this thread. Forgive me if my question seems innane!
I am planning a new computer build for the following purpose
PS CS6 - working files at 2GB plus
    Premiere CS6*
*My video work is very specific. Projects are atypically less than 5 mins in duration and often 30sec TVC type spots.
Source material is AVCHD, PNG and in near future uncompressed files from the Blackmagic Cinema Camera (10bit)
Final output is to be broadcast HD quality at top end and many at web level via YouTube.
I try to be 'tidy' in my editing and keep track numbers to 4 (if that makes any difference?)
I am not the most tech savvy guy by a long shot, compared to Bill and Harm I'd be luck to rate .2 on the richter scale.
My thoughts thus far are this:
    Full tower
    3690 proc
    64GB of ram
MOBO? Not sure if to wait for 'Blunderbolt'
    ****Numerous HDD's as required
    GTX680
    Win 7 64
****So the question I know will roll your eyes! Mother look away now... This may get ugly!
Given the short durations and 10bit source, can I avoid RAID? I know enough that a few layers of 10bit must be a huge amount of data (back to no other way than raid) but wondering how it compares to different intensive compressed codecs such as AVCHD? Should I put on my tin foil hat and hide?
I would really appreciate your thoughts.
    Regards,
    Peter Lloyd Culley.

I do not know enough to answer your question regarding RAID. However, I did notice that you wanted to get an i7-3960 CPU. I may not be a guru but from my experience with the i7-3930 and what I have read since those processors came out, there is not enough of a difference between the two chips to make up for the price difference. I'll even risk to say that you'd be paying an extra $500 just for bragging rights. The i7-3930 is just as good, just clocked a bit lower and has 3 megs less L3 cache. Once you overclock the 3930, it basically performs just as well as its much more expensive brother.
Save money on your CPU and put it somewhere else where it will make more of a difference to your system.

I recently updated to Yosemite and never had this issue before.

I'm not 100% sure of the ins and outs, but it's some sort of known issue between Yosemite, Airport and wifi. All you can do is wait for a fix and keep restarting your equipment as and when needed, unless you have the ability to connect your Mac via ethernet.

I got some more info that may help.
I put a cd on my laptop, and was able to share it to my computer... So the problem is only from my computer to my laptop. I tried the firewall thing and it did not help. I read the rest of the trouble shooting page, and nothing else applies. iTunes is an execption and already was. I can not think of anything else being my problem. Do you think I should re-install iTunes or would that be a waste of time? At this point I am about to just call Apple for some help because I am getting to stressed over this.
    Thanks

Any suggestions for building a home network (in a modest 1600 sq. ft. home) with the following requirements...
    1) Laptop(s) and PC share broadband (cable) internet connection
    2) Access files on PC from laptop(s) and vice versa
    3) PC and laptop(s) share printer (Canon Pixma 610)
    4) Send media on PC to TV
    5) Send music to wireless speakers (not purchased yet)
    Note hardware specs:
    A) One laptop runs on Windows XP and has an Intel PRO wireless 2915ABG network connection
    B) PC runs Windows XP Media Center
I was thinking about the wireless N broadband router 300.  From the experiences of the community, will I be able to achieve my goal?  Beside a PC adapter, is there any other hardware I will need?
    A couple other questions.
The router will likely be sitting right next to my PC.  Does the PC need to have a wireless adapter or can it be wired from the router to the PC?
When will the media extender be available?  Will it work with Windows XP?
    Thank you.
    Chris

I personally might not buy Wireless-N, but the idea of being on the bleeding edge is nice.
Anyway, whichever router you choose, you should be able to accomplish almost everything you need.
You'll be able to share your internet amongst all of the computers, and share files between them all. Local firewalls and permission settings on individual computers could potentially pose a problem.
Sending media to your TV may or may not be possible, depending on what other hardware you have. A router itself would not be able to do that, as a TV doesn't usually have any form of WiFi, but if you had a box connected to it for displaying content on the TV, you could do something like that...
Wireless speakers are generally a separate wireless system. As far as I know, there is a wireless transmitter that sits next to the amp (or other sound source), and broadcasts the music wirelessly to the speakers. You'd have to make sure the speakers and wireless router are on different channels as to not cause interference.
Don't know much about the media extender, but highly likely will be compatible with XP.

I'm using the correct APPLE ID and password for Home Sharing on my computer but my AppleTv is not accepting it?  What's up with that???

I have the exact same issue. I also tried resetting my password. I can log in to iTunes on my laptop with the new password, on to my iPhone iTunes, but my Apple TV says it cannot recognize my password. I just did an Apple Tv software update a few days ago.
I am able to log in to Netflix on my Apple TV just fine. I did not have to re-enter my password for that.
Very frustrating. I hope Apple can figure this out soon and post a fix.
    Thanks for any advice.  Cheers.

  • HT1296 I am trying to transfer all of my music, photos, movies and apps from my IPAD to a new computer I just purchased for home use.  Currently I have been using a work computer.  How can I do this?

I got a new computer for home and I am trying to transfer all of my music, movies, photos and apps from my IPAD.  I have been using my work computer ofr this in the past but want to change to my new home computer.  I can't figure out how to do this without erasing everything from it.

This is an extract from one of our senior participant; hope he doesn't mind me reproducing it here
    Syncing with new computer
    1) Without connecting your iPad to your laptop, start iTunes. Click on Edit. Click on Preferences. Click on Devices. Check the box next to "Prevent your iPod etc. from automatically syncing." Click OK.
    2) Now connect your iPad to your laptop and start iTunes.
    3) When iTunes starts, right click on your iPad under Devices in the left column. Select Transfer purchases etc.
    4) After it finishes transferring all your apps to your new laptop, right click on your iPad and select Backup your iPad.
    5) After it finishes backing up your iPad, right click on your iPad and select Restore etc.
    6) After it finishes restoring, left click on your iPad , then click on the Apps tab on top, and check the box next to Sync Apps, then click on Apply below.
If everything on your iPad looks good after the sync, go back and click on Edit / Preferences / Devices and UN-check the box next to Prevent your iPod etc. The only other thing you may want to check is if your contacts, bookmarks, etc. are syncing correctly now. If not, go to the Info tab after connecting and make sure you indicate which features you want to sync with what sources.
