I'm trying to find the first propper thorough and independant review of this motherboard where the writer physicaly has a NF980-G65 board so it can be benchmarked and compared against Asus's board with 980a chipset and current AMD chipset boards. I want to read the reviewers opinions.
The difference between mainboards using the same chipset is non-existent.  When some boards are faster than others it's usually because the manufacturer has tweaked stock memory sub-timings within their BIOS.
MSI's and ASUS' boards are also manufactured by the same company [Foxconn].  So expect the build and component quality to be the same.  The only real difference would be features, BIOS configuration and board layout.

  • Core Unlocking on NF980-G65

I'm thinking about upgrading my motherboard from an ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe to the MSI NF980-G65 with a Phenom II 550BE but I can't find any decent reviews anywhere about this motherboard to date.
I'd be interested to hear if anyone has tried to unlock the cores of x2 or x3 core Phenom II's using NVCC with this board and how it went as I would like to unlock the 550BE with this board.

Hey everyone, so I have a NF980-G65 mobo with the kingston hyperx mem (KHX1600C8D3K2/4GX) and I'm trying to find stable clocks for the ram.  Also I'm runnin an AMD Phenom II 955 @ 3.8ghz.  Anyways take a look at my picture here..
My question is, are my timings acceptable here for stability purposes? I read in another forum that the Phenom II's run better with lower "tighter" timings.  However as you can see in my pic I have a LinX stress test results showing it passed all 20 loops with ALL memory selected @ timings of 8-8-8-24 @ 1.67V.  If I pass this test, does this mean I'm very stable? Also, if someone else has this mobo with this ram, have you overclocked any higher? Thanks everyone
    Too much voltage brother
you should darn near never hit above 52*C on a Deneb... anything above 50*C and you start to loose performance. Your borderline Max hitting 57*-58*C

  • MSI 890GXM-G65 @ Core Unlocking

Hi guys, I'm new here in this forums.
I just want to ask for those who uses their MSI 890GX-G65 for core unlocking.
    specs:
AMD Phenom II X2 555BE (4 cores stable)
    MSI 890GXM-G65 bios @ 1.6
    G.Skill Ripjaws 1600 CL7 (running @ 1333mhz 7-8-7-24 @1.6v)
    MSI R5770 Hawk
    OCZ ModXstream 600w
My issue is I've unlocked my processor and it's pretty stable, enable ACC. then boot OK.
after some hours of gaming, PC is shutdown. After a few hours, I opened it again and it boot again as X2 yet ACC is enabled.
I have to disable ACC reboot then enable ACC again to unlock it again to x4.
Another issue is OS loading, it's 4x longer in loading than the normal once, my basis in the OS Loading in my PC is after the logo of windows appear, caps, scroll, num lock leds will lit and the mouse then after that it should continue to login screen, but in my case after the lit ups, it hang for a minute(or longer) before continuing to the log in screen. i tried it with all stock no OC, regular OS loading only takes place after reformatting my Computer. after that it returns this kind of case.

I think it's stable enough, btw the x4 to x2 scenario is not always happening. but it has high chances the your next cold boot would you're on X2.
and i do Play games(2 hours minimum), do stress test(1 hour minimum  then back to stock), and overclocking(only when gaming). and i think it's really stable.

  • Msi nf980-g65 problem

    Hey,
Last night I put my PC in to hibernate and went to sleep like normal. and this morning I went to turn on my PC.
    and the monitor gets nothing.
My Mouse lights up. All my fans turn on.
But there is nothing going to my monitor. my 260GTX's nor on board gfx are having any output.
Ive tried everything listed.  Moving ram around. moving the JBAT1 jumper took out the battery.  Pressing DEL and later F1 during start up.
    Nothing works.
    Please help me :(
only 2/4 of the LEDs on the mobo light up.
At first 2 come on and 3rd flickers then it restarts. does this again. restarts. and final it just leaves 2 on.

  • [RESOLVED]NF980-G65 Hang on windows 7 install. Unable to boot

    Hello,
I'm a bit at wit's end here.  My old non-MSI motherboard was failing and giving me loud beep errors, so I decided to replace it.  In doing so I was required to update basically the whole computer in order to keep up with tech trends and my new LCD monitor.
I bought an MSI NF980-G65, 4 gb ddr3 RAM, an ADM 64 250 dual core, and a Nvidia GTX 260.  After I installed the hardware, I was unable to access windows vista 32 on my old hard drive.  I assumed this was because of driver conflicts. Because I had no install discs (only upgrade/recovery discs) I was unable to boot from CD, so I purchased windows 7.  Regardless of which disc(32 or 64) I use when I set my boot sequence in BIOS to boot from the CD first, this is what happens:
The screen shows a white loading bar that says "Windows is loading"
The next screen shows "Starting Windows" with a small "microsoft corporation" logo below it.  It sometimes has a red pixel on the screen.
The next screen it flips to is all blank.  From there it does nothing, no matter how long I leave it.
I have tried booting with no graphics card(internal only)
I have tried booting with no HD attached.
I have tried booting with only one HD attached (of two I've done this both ways)
My HD's have been checked and they are fine
I have tried booting using another dvd rom drive
I have tried swapping IDE HD slots with that of the dvd.
the DVD does use a pci extension card because the sable is not long enough for the dvd player, but regardless of where that IDE cable is plugged in, it still hangs in the load screen and does not go anywhere.
I've seen this symptom mentioned, but not per this motherboard, it seems like a BIOS setting issue but I feel like I've tried them all (disable LAN etc).
If I try to boot to the old Vista 32 install, it says "starting windows" but the logo does not appear, and the progress bar does not fill.
If I try booting vista 32 in any safe mode the load hangs on a .sys file.
Does anyone have any idea what I can do to get this going in the right direction? This has become very frustrating.
    Thanks,
    Alex

What are your complete system specs?  Need the complete picture.  What ram and timings?  Tried 1 dimm in slot closest to cpu?
Since posting this I have tried formatting my Small drive listed above.  I was only able to erase the info using Killdisk.  The format from windows using my old Motherboard (Abit) would not work.  Last night I let the system try to install windows 7 all night, I had 2gb of ddr3 in 1 dimm slot closest to the cpu.  I connected only the above drive after it was whiped, no graphics card (limited on board graphics are on the motherboard) and the install still hung as usual.  Does Killdisk do some sort of improper format? I had assumed that it would erase all data to provide a clean slate.  But I don't even thing a HD is required in order to boot up to the main setup screen?
Do I have voodoo in my machine?

  • Need help flashing nf980 g65 bios

I just put together the NF980-G65 with a 6 core AMD processor. From what I understand it doesn't support the 6 cores unless I flash it to the latest BIOS update. It won't let me install Windows 7 or XP so I'm trying to use mflash. I downloaded the zip and extracted it onto a usb drive that's formatted with fat32. Then in the  BIOS when I try to do the update it can't find the file. It only shows partition 0, previous folder, or media folder. For some reason it won't find the update. I have tried everything I can think of, also using a different usb drive. Please help.

  • NF980-G65 MCP temp problem

Hi. I'm new here and I've been googling this problem for a while and haven't found a specific solution for my problem so I was hoping someone here could help me. First off, I am not a computer tech or know-it-all. I put this system together with no previous experience and it has been running fine till I downloaded Everest and hwmonitor and found that the temperatures of MCP and TMPIN1 is 85-95 C.

    320 GB WD 7200 RPM HD & 1TB WD 7200 HD.
My computer didn't have any problems until yesterday when I left my computer on all day (was a really hot day) and I came home and turned on World of warcraft in windowed mode and tried to play a movie (I always play with a video running) and the video wouldn't display and crashed each time I tried. I could run either the game or the movie but not both. So I checked the temperature and it showed MCP at 95 C. I turned it off for a while, and it went back to normal.
I looked at many different posts and one suggested I try reapplying the thermal compound on my CPU chip which I did with Arctic silver 5 and it's helped my CPU temp a bit but not my MCP temp.
Then I read from other posts that MCP is a different chip but I have no idea where it is. Is it the square silver (one with "MSI" written on it) next to the 2nd PCI-E slot? http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1885
I would figure it would be that one since it's covered by the 2nd video card then it would make sense for the high temp.
If it is. would putting it down to the 3rd slot fix the problem? I'm not sure if the SLI cable would even reach from 1st to 3rd slot if I had to do that. And not sure if leaving the 2nd PCI-E slot open would be alright. I know I'm sounding like a noob; but I really am so please bare with these questions.
If that is not the MCP chip can any1 tell me where it is specifically on that board and how I should go about fixing the temp problem.
I have 2x120mm Rear exhaust fans, 240 top exhaust, 3x120 front exhaust fans, and even installed a 120mm Side panel intake fan which I figured would blow right on the MCP chip since people said it was in the southern area, but it has not helped.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

3 x 2GB sounds like a memory kit meant for an Intel system. In the old days non-optimal memory configurations made chipset temp. sky-rocket. But that shouldn't be it nowadays, should it.
At least try with a single stick.
Next comes air-flow. Like Henry says, 'in from the front and out the back or top'. If for example a big processor heatsink blocks the way, parts of the motherboard and the memory will be in a poor air-flow pocket. That is partly your problem I believe, possibly alongside an exhaust fan that is not up to the job.
The chipset has a separate heat sink. If you intend to reseat that heat-sink, you will have to take the motherboard out, and un-fasten it from the back-side. Use tiny pliers if your fingers are too weak.

  • MSI NF980-G65 - How to disable on-board video? (EVGA says to do this?) GTX260

    I need your help.
Just upgraded my system to use MSI's NF980-G65 SLI board. I only have 1 EVGA GTX260 card right now and I purchased this board so I could add another GTX260 later this spring. The GTX260 worked on my last ASUS board just fine but the NF980-G65 doesn't see it.. at least I think it doesn't see it.  I can boot off the mother board video fine, Windows 7 x64 boots up fine but doesn't see my gtx card in the device list it does report vid as (nforce 980 sli) or something like that. When I power off and plug my monitor into my GTX260, the video does not work (the system continues to boot and I can hear the windows7 start up music), I've tried both video terminals on the card but nothing. EVGA says if my mother board has on-board video that I'll need to disable it and the card will work (I did not have to do this on my last board though, but that board was not an SLI board either). BUT when I go into the bios there is no option to turn off the on-board video? Is this right? Does anyone know how to do this or am I missing something? I've done allot of research on line and there were a few post saying that even with only one card installed that I will only use the mother board video plug only... is this right? Is windows not suppose to report my video card as being a GTX260 but as a 980 SLI? Sorry I'm new to this SLI stuff.
         MSI NF980-G65 w/6G DDR3 Patriot
EVGA GTX260 (installed in first PCI-E x16 slot 'labeled as PCI-E2'), yes both power plugs are plugged in.
         AMD Athlon II X4
         650W PSU
         Windows 7 x64 Home Premium
The system seems to work fine with the on-board video. I used the MSI auto updater to make sure all drivers and the bios are up to date and nothing reported back as needing updating, all though when I searched MSI's site manually there is a newer bios available but haven't dared install it yet.
Is there anyone out there that runs this board with only 1 GTX card? Does your system see it? Help!
    THX!
    MX

Thanks for your help guys. Still no go.
In the "Chipset Feature" there is no disable on board VGA listed. It list these items only.
    HPET [Disabled]
    Hybrid SLI Support [Disabled]
    VGA Share Memory Auto [Auto]
    VGA Share Memory [64M]
I've tried disabling the VGA Share memory, but on boot the mother board gives me a set of 5 or so beeps and then no video works. I have to reset the CMOS after that, so I can see the bios setup screen again.
The above settings is how the board came stock and it's how it returns after I do a reset. I'm starting to wonder if the PCI-E slots are not functioning or my GTX260 got fried moving from one mother board to another (I'm always strapped to ground when I work on electronics). I'll go through the motions tonight to put my asus board back in and test my GTX card. If it works after the swap and you guys have no other suggestions I'll send the board back to MSI for repair.  If the board is bad then this will be my last MSI board, over the last 5 years I've gone through 3 MSI mother boards. MSI always has the features I want but I just don't have the luck with them. My last board (ASUS) doesn't support SLI or I'd still be using it... maybe it's time to go ATI and the crossfire route... I hope not, I'm a real big Nvidia fan.
Anyhow, if you guys have any other suggestions I'd very much appreciate it. Thanks again. - MX

  • The Woeful NF980-G65.

Greetings all, This is my first post after being refered here by a friend who asked This community for help a while back. A little about myself, i'd like to say i am a computer enthusiast this is my first gaming machine built for myself after building many for others and i love it to bits despite its little problems, and as said i am also an avid gamer, mostly fond of blizzard entertainments Starcraft and world of warcraft.
    I am using the following
    NF980-G65
    4GB 2x2GB Kingston Generic ddr1333
Amd Phenom II X2 550(3.1ghz Stock have gone to 4.2 stable, but for the purpose of testing it shall remain at stock)
Nvidia Gainward, GTX 460 2GB GLH Edition(Oced factory and by myself, i have 2 of them in sli at 860 core, For the purpose of testing these will remain at stock)
TP-Link Wireless N lite Mini pcie 150MBps Adaptor(Top slot the small one)
Various Drives, every Sata port and ide slot is filled mostly western digital above 500GB and a sata DVD Rw drive.
    Corsair TX 650Watt PSU
Dual monitor setup Both are Acer G225HQ's Running at 1920x1080(Probabily irrelevant, but i thought i'd include every spec)
    Raidmax Raptor Case.
    Windows 7 x64 home premium.
Fan setup 2 Intake, one at the bottom , one custom made sitting below the dvd drive just to drag extra air in. 1 Exhaust, and PSU Exhaust 2 Side exhaust over the Cards to expell excess heat that they flush back into the system
    Bios Version 1.2
I guess, i should go through the problems
Before overclocking, it used to 'cleanboot' as in you turn it on and it goes and starts up like normal, After overclocking and even after reseting everything back to factory default even in the bios, it Turns on for 5 seconds then cuts out, then boots up normaly (Only on a cold boot, standard resets after running are fine)
According to PCwizard 2010 from www.cpuid.com and Hwmonitor from techpowerup the Mainboard temperature varies between 86 and 98 degree's when idle and under load, it simply switches at random the rest is below 50 even after a long gaming binge(Except for the GTx 460's ofcourse but they aren't really the problem i don't think)
I have had alot of drama with win7, and i would like to go back to Windows vista the manufactorer and the disc has windows vista drivers, i'd like to return to 32 bit aswell on that but each time i go to reinstall it detects the drives(Fresh isntall too) and gives a "windows could not determine if this computer contains a valid system volume" Error, if anyone could help with that i would be ever so greatful.
And lastly, i would like to know if it is possible to put one of the new 1100T phenom II x6 cpu's in it says it supports the 1090T on the msi site, with Bios version 1.4, just wondering if it would take the 1100T
Thank you for reading, i Eagerly await your reply.

By "resetting" you mean that your unplugged your PSU from A/C power, then >>Cleared CMOS<< and loaded "Optimized Defaults" in BIOS Setup after restarting the system?

See if directing a strong fan at the chipset heatsink will cause a drop in mainboard temperature.

you can try with 1 memory stick only in 1st dimm close to cpu socket.

I think I burned up my NF750-G55 while running prime 95 the computer shut off. After that it would only get enough juice to flash the LED's on fans and what not but no boot. Took it out of case bare with different CPU different RAM and no go. I did smell something like burnt electrical smell but no visible sign of damage anywhere I even too off the heat sink next to the socket. I am going to do a little more testing but am pretty sure she is a gone. Should I even bother with RMA it is over a year old, but I always did kick myself for not getting the 980-G65 in the first place anyway so just cut my losses as it may have been my or will they even be able to tell?
I was thinking the 8-pin CPU power will help me keep my overclock stable. Also the power supply circuitry is prob a little bit beefer in the 980-G65 at least. Just not many options for SLI/AM3. I do want to stick with MSI as the only reason the board gave out was probably due to my wrong doings probably had a voltage cranked to high or just was pulling to much power for the board, it is/was my gaming rig in my sig.
The CPU is fine and I did a motherboard transplant from my other PC for the time being, but I really wanted to go SLI in the future, and I can use my spare 9800GT for PhysX and for folding also instead if it just sitting around. Basically just wanting some reassurance that this board will be what I want or should I abandon the SLI capability and go to something else in the same price range around $150 and still has the available slots for at least running my spare cards for folding. Everything is housed in a HAF 932 Black Edition with a Antec TP-750 Blue PSU powering it. Hopefully next week I will be able to order the replacement.
    Any input is welcome.

Well the order is in. I went for the NF980-G65. I was gonna order form Newegg when I came home from work last night, looked at it one more time came back a hour later and it was sold out. So I found some from other places and they seemed ok, but still am always kinda leary when ordering from a new online shop. So I checked Amazon and they had 5 left last night figured maybe next week I will order it. Well I checked again and only 2 left! So I just figured may as well get it in. In the end it was a difference of like $2 more from Amazon. Some of the other shops I found had it like $25 cheaper, but saw some bad reviews about the company and very high shipping costs.
After looking at some other boards with similar features I always came back to this one. As I had said I wish I had just gotten it a year ago when I moved to socket AM3.
I was tempted to just get another NF750-G55 and settle for a mild overclock as the board is now only $85, but figured I will be kicking myself for it again later.

I thought with modern power supplies though it can't fry stuff
If a PSU breaks down, it breaks down.  When internal voltage regulators of a PSU malfunction for some reason, the supply voltages to the components can become horribly dirty and unstable.  Sudden voltage spikes could have killed any component.

unless the ram or motherboard came to me already DOA, id have no way of knowing
Well, in order to know, you have to test your stuff.  In case you do not have spare (and functioning!) components for testing purposes you are screwed.  Bring your system to a computer shop for assistance (or: RMA everything).

What you are asking does not make any sense regarding Hybrid SLI. For Hybrid SLI you need a single GeForce 8400 or 8500 graphic card to boost 3D graphics performance with on board graphic card.
Are you actually wanting to do normal SLI with the two 9800GTX+ cards?
Edit: What's wrong with the instructions in your manual? If the paper manual you have is not adequate try the PDF one from >> here <<, maybe it shows more than the paper one you got with the MB. See SLI instructions starting at page 2-22.
any1 else want to take a shot at this who understands the difference between hybrid and geforce boost and is also aware that hybrid is not limited to 1 gpu + mGpu but can be used in dula and tri-sli configurations?

  • MSI NF980-G65 CPU heatsink selection

Hey guys, I'm ordering my new cpu tomorrow, Phenom II x4 965 BE, the new 125w revision. My motherboard is the MSI NF980-G65.
I need to figure out which of the top end heatsinks will fit without interfering with my ram.
    G.Skill Trident.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231282&cm_re=gskill_trident-_-20-231-282-_-Product
Dual channel mode with 2 sticks utilizes the first two slots I think.
The ram measures 2 1/8" tall to the top of the heat spreader.
So far the cooler i'm most interested in is the Scythe Mugen 2 but the thing looks huge, from what I can tell folk with AMD boards have had success by mounting the fan so it's raised a bit, thus clearing the ram. I dont know if this would affect the cooling being that the fan's offset ?
I dont know how high the base of the fan sits by default, judging from the pictures it's not very high, so i'm guessing i'd have to offset it by at least 1".
I'd like to orient it to blow out through the back of the case as opposed to vertically into the psu.
The other option would be the Corsair H50, I have a modded side panel and I could mount the rad/fan to one of the 120mm holes. This option eliminates all the fitment issues, having said that i'm still not convinced the H50 is all it's cracked up to be, seems there are many mixed reviews.
I am open to other suggestions if you guys have any. With the right cooler, a couple of gin and tonic's and a lot of luck i'll be able to hit 4ghz, at least that's my goal
The case is a Cooler Master Praetorian with great air flow due to a couple of side, top and floor panel mods.
This is a brand new build and i'm hoping to have it all ready to go by the weekend so i'd like to get set on the right cooler by tomorrow, i'd hate to have to return it and delay the building !

I have the same board and am using a 945 95w version. I have the Thermalright 128-SE. It's a bit lower then others and just fits in my 4u rack case. I have a 120mm AC PWM fan on it which blows down. Right now i have min fan speed set down a notch or two and Hwmonitor is reporting fan at 75% and cpu cores at ~25c at idle. It keeps the cores at 40-45c under stress test. And yet even at full speed you can't hear the fan over drives and other sounds. A little bigger fan would easly hand a hotter cpu.  Just be sure to order the am2/3 brackets.
Also the upper part of the heat sink is offset a bit to the side with the small pipes. hang that over the ram and it will help keep them cool, though my G.Skill 1600 ripjaws don't seem to need any help staying cool
