Moved drive to USB Port on Time Capsule and TM no longer sees backups

I moved my FireWire attached HD from a direct attachment to my Mac Pro to attached via the USB port on my Time Capsule. Time Machine now wants to start over, and does not see the previous backups.
The destination drive name did not change, other than the added NAS address.
Is there a way to force TM to use the previous backup set incrementally instead of starting over?
Thx

unfortunately, it's not that simple. TM treats backups to directly attached drives differently vs. networked ones.

  • Cannot print from Canon MF4412 through USB port of Time Capsule

    Hi everyone,
I've recently purchased a new Canon imageCLASS MF4412 and cannot print while connected to the USB port of the time capsule. I can print and scan perfectly when connected directly to the mac.
This is the exact steps I took:
1.After connecting the usb cable to the back of Time capsule, I go to the sys pref pane to add a printer.
2.It shows up as a 'Bonjour' and I had to manually select the driver.
3.It added fine and I thought everything was setup.
4.However, when i go to print something, there's an error. "Canon URF II Printer Driver"
"Cannon communicate with the printer, or the printer is not supported. If the printer is supported, check the printer connection and add it again. Then, if the Print Dialog box has a [Printer Info] button, acquire the printer information: 10322"
    Anybody know of a solution?
    Thanks.

I got a similar problem on MF4412, the canon 4412 is connected the newest airport extreme , it get configured. But I got same problem described about on my leopard, lion, even worst on iOS, it does not find the printer. But I got a Windows 7 starter NetBook ...haha it works, I can print it from Windows. what is the problem then,it works on Windows but not Apple's OS??????

  • How do I connect a Canon Selphy CP900 using the USB port on Time Capsule

I am running a MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion (10.8.5) and have installed the CP 900 driver (6.2) supplied by Canon from their website.  I have a Time Capsule set up as a stand alone internal network at my home and use it as a network attched hard drive directly - not via Time Machine.  I can "see" the printer when I connect but cannot print to it.    I open a photo in preview and select the printer and print.
    I get a
    Cannin Selphy CP Generic
connection method not supported message - 9786
The printer does show up in my Print and Scan control panel in System Preferences
I also cannot reach it to check suplies
At the print it dsiplays the printer to computer connection via USB
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks, Asa

    Hi Asa,
I experienced the same error -9786 although I'm not using the time capsule, but only through the wifi.
I did following and resolved the problem.
    1. I re-installed the driver software.
    2. I re-configured the printer settings. (System Preferences - Printers and Scanners - "+" button)
    3. I didn't add the selphy manually, but just I just input "CP" in the searchbox in "Add" dialog, and clicked "OK" button then the printer is set automatically.
    4. I tried pringing a photo from iPhoto and could print correctly.
it looks like the key action is #2 and #3 above, so why don't you give a try?

  • Time Capsule 3rd Gen no longer sees External USB drive

Airport Utility 7.6.4 installed and no other updates are specified as avaiable.
For a while the external drive with two 1T Mac formatted partitions cannot be seen by network nor appears in Disk section of Airport Utility.
Mavericks used and all fully up to date.
Connecting drive to iMac and MBP directly allows use of the drive fine.
I think the firmware has stopped the external drive from being recognised. Did have the "USB Power"  amber light occur some time ago but selected to ignore. External drive is powered of course.
    Any ideas?

A Gen3 TC the USB port is seriously underpowered.
A powered hub is the first essential item to get this working. The fact that your disk is powered is insufficient.. I think also because of the limited number of USB devices the airport utility can work with.. even some powered hubs are simply not recognised.
For a while the external drive with two 1T Mac formatted partitions cannot be seen by network nor appears in Disk section of Airport Utility.
Mavericks used and all fully up to date.
The disk must appear in airport utility.
From there getting disks mounted in Mavericks can add another level of pain.. but recognition comes first.
The latest firmware is more likely a step backwards than anything.. I would downgrade the firmware to 7.6.1. Factory reset. Use all SMB naming, ie short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.

  • Can we connect a Mac and PC to Time Capsule and use it as common backup device for both machines ?

    .

Yes, but you use Time Machine on the Mac although there are alternatives, TM is great tool.
On the PC you need to use a suitable backup software. Many many available.. choose one.. anything but Microsoft's own backup which is a total pain.

  • Moved iTunes library to Time Capsule and now can't see music in iTunes

    G'day People
I moved my iTunes library to my Time Capsule and pointed iTunes to the new location via Preferences - > Advanced.
However, when I start up iTunes, it's empty. When I check the Preferences in iTunes, the location of the library is correct, that is, my music folder on my Time Capsule.
Has anybody else had this problem or know why my library is blank when, in fact, iTunes IS pointing to the location that holds the library?

    I moved my iTunes library
    What exactly did you move?
and pointed iTunes to the new location via Preferences - > Advanced.
That simply tells iTunes where to store music in the future.
However, when I start up iTunes, it's empty. When I check the Preferences in iTunes, the location of the library is correct, that is, my music folder on my Time Capsule.
No, that is the location of the iTunes music folder.
The iTunes library contasts of the \Music\iTUnes folder and all contents and the iTunes music. wherever it may be located.
    Let's try and fix it.
Again, what exactly did you move?

  • USB printing through Time Capsule from Ipad or iphone

  • Time Capsule and iTunes set up not working, please help.

I have moved my itunes library to my time capsule and changed my itunes preferred path to its time capsule location. However when I restart my apple laptop, after having shut it off for the night, and open itunes (time capsule is visible and accessible to the laptop), itunes has reversed the preferred path I set to point to my time capsule to my local laptop hard drive instead. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I have looked in other discussions concerning lost itunes file paths, however I never had this issue with my wired external drive; and I only start iTunes after I am sure that my computer can access the files on my time capsule. Thank you.
My laptop is a Macbook Pro 2.3 Ghz running Mac OS X (10.5.2)

If you're still experiencing "disconnects," even with the earlier firmware, but not experiencing these at all when directly connecting your computer to the modem, there is a good chance that one of the following may still be the problem:
o Bad Ethernet cable between the D-Link & TC.
    o The TC is faulty.
    o The D-Link is faulty.
o The TC & D-Link are just not compatible with each other.
o The ADSL signal strength, coming from your ISP into the D-Link, may need "tuning."
I'd start with trying a known good Ethernet cable. If that doesn't resolve the problem try contacting your ISP/ADSL-Provider next to see if they can run a ADSL line diagnostic to verify that there is a good signal to the D-Link; While you have them on the line, see if they can provide you with another modem.
Finally, if available to you, try temporarily replacing the current TC with another TC or another wireless router.

  • Time Capsule and media files

Hi all. I apologize if this is a redundant question, but I haven't quite found the answer that I need.
I want to purchase a Time Capsule to use as a wireless n router and Time Machine backups for my desktop, notebook, and daughters iMac. I also want to attach an external drive via USB to the Time Capsule to serve as a media server (basically my iTunes and iPhoto libraries), to serve the above-mentioned computers as well as my AppleTV.
    1. Is this possible? If so, can anyone point me to a list of instructions describing the setup and settings?
    2. Will this be fast enough to serve the media to my clients (USB and wireless n)?
    3. Will Time Capsule back up my media on the external drive using Time Machine automatically?
    4. Is there a better solution?
    Thanks in advance.
    John

JG, I have a similar question, but I'm not following your response to John Dougherty. Here's what I have:
    - Mac Mini 2.0Ghz, 2GB RAM
    - Time Capsule (500GB)
    - two MacBooks
    - two external hard drives (320GB and 500GB), both firewire 400
    - one SimpleShare NAS drive, but I've read these will not work with OSX 10.4 and above (the drive is from a few years ago; I have 10.5.x on all my machines now)
And here's what I want to do:
    1. I want to have all my media (specifically, photo and music) files in one location so that I can access them wirelessly from my Macbooks. My wife and I both have large music libraries -- each too large to fit on any one computer. So I would like to have our music on one wirelessly-accessed drive, so that, say, I can play tunes or update my iPhone on my laptop without being tethered to an external drive (which is how it is now). I don't care about wirelessly streaming video.
    2. I want to be able to use Time Machine for automatic backups, obviously. I don't care where these reside.
    3. I had originally planned to use the Mini as a media server -- i.e., I wanted hook it to my television (via HDMI adapter) to play streamed videos as well as video saved to my hard drive(s). The mini's internal hard drive is 120GB, probably enough for all these media files, but I imagine I'll max that out soon. (Most movies are 1GB or more, and I'm collecting a lot of movies.)
    My plan is this:
    - store all media files on external hard drive(s)
    - connect the mini to the TV via HDMI adapter
    - connect external hard drive to Mini via firewire
    - connect Mini to Time Capsule via ethernet
Time Capsule stores backups from both Macbooks and Mini (if it can fit all that).
    External drives store all media.
Mini is the brains of the operation.
Is this the same setup you're recommending to John Dougherty? Or am I trying to do something different? Or am I trying to do something stupid?
Is there any value in using a NAS drive in place of those external firewire drives?
Thanks in advance to Jolly Giant, or to anyone who can help me with this setup.

  • I have a time machine backup file on a USB hard drive.  I bought a time capsule / airport extreme, flat 3TB.  I wish to transfer the backup file from the usb hard drive to the time capsule hard drive.  10.6.8

I have a time machine backup file on a USB hard drive.  I bought a time capsule / airport extreme, flat 3TB.  I wish to transfer the backup file from the usb hard drive to the time capsule hard drive.  10.6.8

Unfortunately, Time Machine backups that are stored on a drive that has been connected directly to a Mac are completely different than Time Machine backups that are stored on a Time Capsule.
Frankly, it is not worth the effort and trouble to try to transfer the old backups to the new Time Capsule.....my opinion....having done this in the past.
It is possible though, but I would not recommend it due to the complexity and downsides involved with this. To give you an idea of how to do this, check out this support article.
    http://pondini.org/TM/18.html
Even if you transfer the "old" backups over to the Time Capsule successfully, Time Machine will not simply "add on" to the old backups.
Time Machine will make a new complete backup of your Mac and then add incremental backups from that point.
My advice.....start a new backup on the Time Capsule and move forward. Keep the USB hard drive around for a month, maybe 2 or 3 in case you need to go back to an old backup for some reason.  At that time, you will not likely need the old backups at all since you will have a current 2-3 month history of new backups.  At that point, you can erase the USB drive and use it for another purpose.

  • My PC cannot see a hard drive connected by usb to my Time Capsule!

    Help please.
My PC cannot see my Toshiba hard drive connected by usb to my Time Capsule. I can see the hard drive in Airport Utility. I suspect my problem may be to do with either setting up File Sharing or else mapping............if anyone can help fix this it would be most appreciated! Thanks.

Wins server is useless.. you won't have one..
Did you turn on the guest account with full read and write permissions.. ??
Can you ping the TC ip address??
Is the airport utility on the windows machine??
Do you have a mac to access the drive?
Is it real fat32 or some strange exfat which won't work?
I also wonder if it should not be formatted on directly on the TC.. or on a Mac and formatted GUID not windows type.
Sorry not all of this is logical..
If you can access the internal disk from windows.. how are you doing that??
If the external USB drive is not working.. plug it straight into the windows machine and enjoy faster better and more consistent file copying..
Share it to the network if you want network access.

Can Time Machine back up a second external hard drive that is attached via usb to a Time Capsule?

I want to back up the data on the external Hard Drive that is attached to the Time Capsule to the Tim Capsule using Time Machine.

  • Time Capsule and multiple USB drives ... no show

    Hi,
probably one of the Apple wizards can enlighten me here, as also the information in this forum seems inconclusive.
I have a Time Capsule, and everything is fine with that.
I can connect one drive via USB, and this drive shows.
However, I seem to be unable to connect two drives, regardless of HUB I use (I tried two powered and two passive ones fron three different vendors), and which sequence I turn these things on and off.
The first drive that is connected shows.
If I connect the hub with already spinning drives, it is nondeterministic which one will show up.
    But only one will show.
    Is this expected behaviour?
I find references on the Apple site and throughout this forum that multiple drives are possible.
    Greetings,
    - Thomas

This is not an answer, but it seemed like a good place to post my latest experience.
I got the Time Capsule and connected three drives to it via USB hub. It worked fine for awhile but then I realized that the backups were not running.
It was a struggle. I finally reinitialized the TC and then got another software program other than Time Machine to run the backups.
So that worked, but now when I plug the other drives in by USB the TC drops off. I can't connect to it.
The TC shows up on the network, but when I plug other drives in to it, it drops off the network.
I finally worked around the problem (with fingers crossed!). I plugged in a couple of the drives to one of my older macs and networked to that drive and the backups seem to be running.
The I plugged one of the drives in to my older Airport Extreme via USB and that backup is running via wireless.
Then if I leave the TC alone with nothing connected to it, I can run a backup to it.
But it is frustrating. First, I could run the backups with TM to the attached drives, no problem. Now, I cannot use the drives connected to the TC via USB. I have to connect them to something else completely.
And that is after the backups stopped working under TM.
It seems like the Holy Grail - a backup program that works.
For today, I think I have worked around my problem, but it is disappointing. I was hoping the TC would allow me to connect drives to it by USB and run the backup through TM. Now TC is basically a networked drive. (Forgot to mention that i am not using it for wireless connection.) I turned that function off and it just a networked drive.

  • How do I add a hard drive to the new Airport Time Capsule?

I just bought a 2 TB Airpot Time Capsule and it has a USB port on the back. I can plug in my USB drive (stand alone, powered via USB), and have it mount fine, but when I try to copy files to it, it gets ejected and a warning pops up.
So how do I use this USB port. Does the hard drive need to be formated in any fancy pants way?

    I don't have HFS+ as an option:

  • ITunes Library on External Hard Drive via Time Capsule and plugged in directly to laptop when away from home

To save space on my macbook pro I would like to export my iTunes library onto an external usb hard drive. So that I don't have to have the hard drive plugged in to my laptop all the time when I am at home I would like to plug it into a Time Capsule and access it over my wireless network. This is the simple part that I am confident about setting up.
The tricky part is as follows. When I take my laptop out of the house when I am traveling I would like to still be able to access my iTunes library by plugging the external usb hard drive directly into my laptop as I will not be able to access my home network anymore.
I know this will potentially break all of the tracks in my iTunes library as the file paths will change as it will be plugged directly into my laptop rathern than via the Time Capsule. Does anybody know of a way to quickly fix all of the broken tracks in the library or a way I could achieve the above?
I hope someone can help me

I have nothing wireless in the house and no experience with Time Capsules.  However, as long as the drive appears on the desktop in both scenarios there should be no problem.  If there is, hold down the option key while starting iTunes and guide it to the library.itl file on the external drive.
Do not confuse moving your library with moving your media, as many people do.  Your library is your whole iTunes folder.  You move it by copying the whole folder to the other drive and starting iTunes with the option key as above.  If you want to move only media you do so through preferences settings in iTunes, making sure you organize (consolidate) your media so it actually copies it to the other drive.  There are advantages and disadvantages to either situation, but generally unless you are going to have media on one several drives, or you plan on sharing media but not library listings with other users, you are best off moving teh whole library.  Moving the whole library also has less potential for resulting in broken links since your library is all in one package and not split across drives.
