Moved Files "Not Authorized"

Is there a step I am missing when copying new files to machines that are authorized to play my iTunes content?
Currently my iTunes libraries are located on external drives.
I have one for my desktop (G-Tech 2TB) and one for my MacBook Pro (iOmega Mini Max 2TB).
The problem I am having is with the "authorizations" on the files.
Even though both computers are authorized to play my iTunes content when I copy new files and go to play something new on my MacBook Pro the system invariably tells me that "this computer is not authorized to play this content". Now if I have an internet connection available this is an easy fix but if I don't (which is fairly often when I am operating off my laptop) I am screwed.
Is there a step I am missing in importing that will prevent this?

Hi kellmack,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I recommend the steps in this article if iTunes prompts you to authorize your PC to play some purchases after you've already authorized it:

  • File to File - "Not authorized to file" Problem

    Hi
I have configured a communication channel to pick a file form R/3 system.  We have created an FTP user for this.  We are getting "Not authorized to file" error in adapter monitoring.  I came to know that the FTP user needs R3OWNER authority.  Does the FTP user really needs the R3OWNER authority or is there any other way to pick the file from the R/3 system ?
    Regards,

    Nettem,
If the client has no problem within the organisation to share the files then we will go for NFS. If you send the files outside your organisation then we will do the FTP. NFS is nothing but network file sharing.
Sometimes even with in the organisation also client dont want to give file sharing. Then you will go for FTP. Hope this gives you some idea on these two.

  • Finder moving files not copying

I have been using a mac for over 15 years but this one has me stumped.
When coping files I have always held down 'option' to copy the file. A small green plus symbol appears and the files then copy into the target folder, or hard drive.
I have a Mac Pro, with the latest updates of Yosemite .... but now the files are moving and NOT copying.
So when I back something up, they are no longer in the original location, only where i have copyied them to. They disappear.
Should I be using cut and paste instead? Anyone else have this problem?

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Download and re-install the 10.10.1 update.

  • Imported files not authorized to upload to ipod???

I had purchased some tunes online awhile back and had no problem with them. Then my hard drive crashed and I had to reinstall itunes. I imported the files to it and it says it won't allow them to be uploaded to my ipod as they are not authorized on my computer. I checked to make sure my computer is on the authorized list and it is. Why can't I get them transfered to my ipod and how can I fix it? New to ipod and so far not having much luck with it....
    Thanks

  • How can I delete all files not authorized for this computer?

    Hi there,
first off, I promise right here and now, that I will never buy a DRMed song or video again...
And here is my probelm: I'm using my Mac and iTunes for ages and all things were perfectly fine. I used to have a girlfriend and both of us had our iTunes accounts and were buying stuff everyday.
After some time we split-up and I kept the computer with the files and the authorization - no worries.
But then my LogicBoard died. Now apart from the fact that all over sudden half of my music that I used to listen to for years doesn't work any longer I also have a lot of explaining with my new GF to do.
Ok, guys, please help me out: How on earth do I find ALL the songs that were bought with that specific account and just delete them? (So what, if half the music is gone, but I have to act one fast!).
    thanks for your help!

Just to let everyone know that there seems to be NO solution for this problem. I contacted the iTunes Support and they told me to go through the library one by one and delte all the songs manually.
Well, what can I say? I wasted many hours of my life, I went through thousands of songs and delted hundreds of them manually. I'm very frustrated with Apple that they don't provide a function to solve issues like that more elegantly and I'm even more upset with the content industry. I still feel that the music industry is not interested in people enjoying their legally bought products and hope that the current economic downturn wipes out the music industry as we know it.
I like music, I like to support musicians (not the studio bosses) but I hate the fact that when we purchased DRMed music in times where everyone was using P2P and alternatives like iTunes Plus and Amazon MP3s I, as an honest customer, am now much worse off than if I had pirated the music.
My advice to all: Hands-off DRMed songs and movies! You will end up in trouble even if it seems to be all easy now and it is just not worth the pain!

  • I recently bought a new computer and had all my files moved to it. Now when I sync my iPad and iPod I get a message stating that some (41) of my items can not be copied to my PC because it is not authorized even though it is authorized on my account.

I recently got a new PC and had all of my files moved to it. However, when I sync my iPad and IPod nano I get a message that states that 41 of my items can not be copied to the PC because it is not authorized on my account even though it is. I have tried de-authorizing it and re-authorizing it but they still will not copy. Any thoughts on how I can get them to copy?

"Note: If you no longer have access to a computer that is using one of your authorizations, you can deauthorize all of the computers associated with your account by following the steps at the bottom of About iTunes Store authorization and deauthorization".
Authorize the new computer. Launch iTunes. Go to the menu bar click Store / Authorize This Computer.
    Sync your iPod.

  • Moved my files to external hard drive, now files not found.  Help?

My Itunes folder having outgrown my memory, I moved all the files to my external hard drive, following the directions in Itunes. I was able to play the songs as long as the hard drive was connected. However, I opened Itunes mistakenly without the E: Drive connected, and it opened blank, with no files in place. I closed, hooked up the hard drive, and opened Itunes again, holding down the shift key and choosing the library on E: (the xmp file). The files now show up, but when I try to play them, I get a message indicating that the file isn't found, do I want to find it? I can, but I don't want to go through 5000 files and add each one individually. If I try adding or importing the folder again, the file is simply in itunes twice. I can always import everything again, but I don't want to lose all my ratings, last-played, etc. It took a lot of time to listen to and rate all those songs. Any help would certainly be appreciated. Thanks.

I am having the same problem. I moved my itunes library to an external drive to free up the space on my notebook and now I "get files not found do you want to search" If I search I can find the song in Windows but have to find each song individually, I have 2600 songs I burned from my CD collection, it would take way too long. I have tried copying the file to the same drive, I have reintalled itunes multiple times. I have checked Apple and my computer is "authorized". Is there any way out of this? Otherwise I will be limited to just having the music I already have on my ipod and being unable to add any more, and if that ever bocomes compromised I would be unable to restore it. None of my music is purchased from itunes, it is all burned from my CD's.

  • Why does the new operating system not delete the moved files from their original location - it seems like an enormous waste of space, time and effort to clean up every file once you've moved it

Why does the new operating system not delete the moved files from their original locations - it seems like an enormous waste of space, time and effort to clean up every file once you've moved it - also, when transferring large amounts of files it becomes a very large problem remembering which files were transferred and which not.

You're going to need to be more specific, as I'm not quite sure I understand what you're talking about.
If you're referring to copying from an external hard drive or flash drive, and you want to actually move files rather than copy them, you can hold down the option key to force it to do a "move" rather than a "copy." This is not new behavior, though... the Mac OS has worked this way as long as I can recall (and I've been using it since 1984).
If you're having a problem with trying to move files from one place to another on a single drive causing them to be copied instead, that is likely because of some permissions issue preventing you from actually being able to move them.

  • I moved files off my computer to an external hard drive now time machine won't back up like it used to.  It says there is not enough room.

My hard drive was completely full (mostly with pictures) so I moved several years worth of photos from the hard drive to an external hard drive I regularly use with the laptop. (Basically my master copies of all my photos back to 1997)  I have always had Time Machine set up to back up both the laptop AND that external drive.  It's always worked seamlessly until I moved those files.  Time Machine has been full for a while now and regularly gives me a message that the oldest files will be deleted.  That's fine.
I don't understand why moving files from the laptop to the external hd would now cause the following message (not an exact quote): Time Capsule cannot complete backup.  You need 233 gb to backup and time capsule only has 107 gb available. If time capsule was already set to backup up both the laptop and the external hd, why would moving those photos from one hd to the other cause a space issue?  It should equal out.   And now when I look at the files on the time capsule, it only shows me a recent backup and a partial incomplete backup.  None of the older backups are visible anymore. I have not deleted anything directly from the time capsule so I'm thinking somehow the index got damaged.  How can I fix this?  The error message says to change the settings but I really don't know what settings to change.  Help!!

It does not immediately delete the files that are missing.. it merely tries to backup the new files it has discovered on the external drive. Since you moved the files there, the backup at least for a while will contain both copies.. and that is why it doesn't have enough space to backup.
Fixing the problem.. hmm pondini is the expert.. you should be able to delete the backup of the photos in existing backup.. there are instructions to do it.. but it is a very poor way to do things.
Much better. .archive off the existing backup.. this is long and slow but worth it. you need a usb drive of the same size as the TC drive. Then erase the TC and start a fresh set of backups.
The alternative is to use the USB drive as a new target.. but it is much slower than the TC internal drive.

  • How do you find out which files are not authorized?

All of a sudden, out of the blue, I start getting this message :
Some of the Audible files in the iTunes library were not copied to the iPod “iPod” because you are not authorized to play them on this computer.
Well first of all - all of the music I've bought in the last 4 years have come from iTunes so why this comes up now all of a sudden is beyond me.
    Computer hasn't changed.
Same old iPod touch (1st gen) I've been using for several years now. The last time I tried to sync it was probably a few weeks ago (with no problems).
I thought I'd look to see if say the past 10 songs I've purchased are on the iPod (which goes back several months)... they are.
So I thought - ok let's see if I get a problem syncing my iPhone and my iPad. Nope - no problems there.
    I'm stumped.
It would be nice if I could even get a list of the files it claims can't be synced to the iPod, that would be a good starting point to diagnose the problem, but I can't figure out even how to get that.
    Help!

Some of the Audible files ...
if you're seeing that error, it has nothing to do with purchased content from the iTunes store.
Audible is an online store that sells Audiobooks. The audiobooks purchased from Audibooks work the same way as the songs purchased from iTunes. You can only play the audiobooks on a limited number of computers.

  • ITunes says computer is not authorized to play file, but it definitely is

    Hello.
I recently bought Ministry of Sound's 90s Anthems 2 on iTunes. All the files have downloaded, but certain ones won't play. When I try to click them, I get the error message: 'This computer is not authorized to play X. Would you like to authorize it?' See below.
The computer is authorized. I purchased this album for £9.99. My computer is the only authorized computer on my account. If I log into my account as it says in the error message, it tells me the computer is already authorized and STILL won't let me play the tracks. Can anyone help?
    Paul

Authorization should only be required to play "protected" media whereas the tracks should be classed as "purchased". It is likely that the tracks are corrupt. Assuming you are in a region where you are allowed to redownload your past music purchases (like the U.K.), delete the broken tracks from your iTunes library (but do not hide from iCloud), close and then reopen iTunes, go to the iTunes Store home page, click the Purchased link from the Quick Links section in the right-hand column, then select Music and Not on this computer. You should find download links for your tracks there.
While downloading click the small download activity widget underneath the search box and make sure Allow Simultaneous Downloads is unticked.
If the problem persists, or that facility is not yet available in your region, contact the iTunes Store support staff through the "Report a problem" links in your account history, or via Contact Support.

  • "The file 'x' could not be copied because this computer is not authorized."

I am trying to get an app (VSCO Cam) from my sister's iTunes library. We are logged onto the same home share network, and I can open her library just fine, but when I click the app and click "Import", a box shows up and says, "The file "VSCO CAM could not be copied because this computer is not authorized." I'm not sure wat computer it's talking about, buton both computers we've got up to the "Store" button, clicked "Authorize this computer", and we've entered OUR OWN Apple ID's. Now, the one we use for homesharing is different, and we both have our own apple ID's, which I put in my own, and she put in her own when asked to authorize our computers. Should we be putting in the ID we use when we homeshare when asked to authorize? Or will that change everything about our iTunes libraries.
I can import a song just rom her library just fine, it's only when I try to do the app/.

    Hi kiran,
although you ave checke authorization, I gues it has something to to with this.
Is the user in communication channel still autorized?
Try to logOn with an FTP-Client an this user an PW on the relevant folders.
Or could it be that a file with the same filename already extist an the folder is not allowed to overwrite?

  • Moving iDVD archive to new MacBook show movie not authorized

I just bought I MacBook Pro and I have an older iMac. I'm trying to transfer an iDVD archive project from the iMac to the MacBook so I can burn the DVD (my older iMac don't have a DVD burner). I was able to create an iDVD archive and copy it to my MacBook. However, when I try to load the movie it says my computer is not authorized to play a movie purchased on iTunes.
    1. I have authorized the MacBook with the same iTunes account and verified I share the same iTunes library.
    2. The 'movie' was not purchased on iTunes. It is a slide show of family photos.
    3. iDVD keeps prompting me to enter my iTune ID and password, which I enter each time, but when I try to burn the DVD it says the DVD map has errors. I checked the map and again it prompts me for my iTunes account for my personal movie file.
I tried deauthorizing the MacBook then reauthorizing but to no avail? What am I doing wrong?
