Moved Files, then Installed iLife 06, GB3 takes FOREVER to open now- Help?

Hi,
I just upgraded from GarageBand 2 to GarageBand 3. Previously, everything was on my start-up drive. When I upgraded, I moved all the files I could (loops and the like) to a media drive while keeping everything else on the start-up drive. Now, when I open GB3, it hangs and hangs, beach ball spinning, and the name of the application turns red in Activity Monitor, like it's frozen. But, it does eventually open up, after a minute or two, literally. It seems to hang when it starts loading the instruments used in the track. But it still does open and work fine! Well, not exactly fine, it also takes a lot longer than it used to to load a new instrument when I select a new one. Does anyone know what the issue may be?
Oh, and, I tried opening a file, then saving it as something different, then opening that new file, but it does the same thing.
Here's a bit more on exactly what I did that lead up to the problems--
I had iLife 05 that came with my computer. I was upgrading to iLife 06. Everything from iLife 05 was on my boot drive- that's how it came and I never changed it. I have a second drive that I use for media files (I edit video- all of those files, my itunes library, etc. is on this drive). Prior to upgrading, I wanted to move everything I could (loops and stuff like that) to the second drive. So, there's a point in the installation right before it actually installs everything- it tells you where it's going to put a bunch of folders, it gives you the path and lets you know you can put them somewhere else if you'd like (ex. "SuchAndSuch" Folder will be installed in /Library/Application Support/Garageband. If you want to, you can choose a different folder. (to paraphrase)). At this point (for each of the folders full of files that it was installing), I followed the path it gave, took the folder that was already there ("SuchAndSuch") and copied it to the second drive, I then deleted that original folder and redirected the installer to the new folder. I even duplicated the folder path, to make it easier for me to understand, so that for the example above, the new path was "SuchAndSuch" Folder will be installed in /MediaDrive/Library/Application Support/Garageband. I am certain I did this part correctly. I created the "Library", "Application Support", & "Garageband" folders-- I only actually moved that last folder and deleted it off the Boot Drive. Anyway, I was pretty sure all this was okay to do because I was only moving the original stuff it was telling me it would be updating or replacing... I hope this makes sense and might help to figure just where or where I went wrong.
I suspect there may be some small file(s) that I moved to the second drive that really should be on the boot drive- some sort of files that act as a map or something for garageband. Maybe an invisible file? ...I hate those invisible files.
**Oh wait!** I just remembered something, when I was copying those folders (like I was saying above), it did prompt me for my admin name and password! So, wouldn't that mean I was moving something, well, important? Instead of just the loops and stuff?
Let's see... other info-- I have 4.5 GB RAM, Both drives are internal, 7200 RPM. The media drive is the fuller of the two at barely over 50% capacity. I did repair permissions after the intallation. Everything else runs fine on both drives.
Anyone know what I did that messed GarageBand up? And how I may be able to fix it?
Thanks everyone!
William

That's exactly what that means. If you don't have enough space on your hard drive to store all the Garageband data, either burn off to CD and DVD data you don't use frequently that belongs to you, or get a larger hard drive. You should be careful only to move files and folders which belong to you and were not installed by something else (some applications may be moved from the Applications folder, but remember they frequently may need to be returned if you update them) as my FAQ here explains:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=121899
If you know what you moved and the permissions of what you moved, I'd move it back. And then repair permissions with Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility. Otherwise you may be forced to locate that which is critical to you in what you moved, and back it up first elsewhere, and then remove and reinstall Garageband. Someone in the Garageband forum may better know what's critical for Garageband to operate.

  • Why does Safari take forever to open now?

For some reason Safari takes forever to open on my computer. This just started in the last week. The icon just bounces over and over until it finally stops with no triangular black arrow next to it. When I click on it again (after the initial bouncing) it slowly opens my home page. After reading all the other posts that might help my situation, I've reset Safari, checked for duplicate fonts, checked my proxies, thrown out Safari icons, etc.. Nothing seems to fix the problem. Any other suggestions?

    Hi Starman
Thank you for your quick response. When I clicked the Safari icon this morning, it opened right up, so I don't know if one of the other things I tried before really did fix it or if this is just a fluke. Should I still throw out the cache in the Safari folder? I thought 'reset Safari' in the drop down menu would have already done that. Thanks for any response.

Don't know if that would be a failing hard drive, but it may be that you are out of available space. How much hard drive space do you have available? Please highlight the Macintosh HD icon and then press Command and I for a get info window. Once open, please copy and post the following:

Mac OS requires a minimum of 10 - 15% of total hard drive space available and empty at all times in order to operate properly.

  • ITunes takes forever to open!!

When I open iTunes in my Dock, it takes at least five minutes to open. I timed it tonight. This is a fairly recent problem, maybe for the last month or so. I'm wondering if anyone knows if this could be because I have a LOT of iPhone Applications in iTunes now?
I'm also having problems with other apps on my Mac, such as iPhoto running very slow, but only iTunes takes forever to open. iPhoto opens quickly, freezes a lot while using it, and takes several minutes to close, probably due to having over 20,000 photos in it.
So I'm thinking the iTunes problem probably isn't related to the iPhoto problems.
Also, I just did an "Archive and Install" with the Leopard OS at the advice of an Apple store Genius, but it didn't fix or change anything. In fact, the Install took six hours, which I believe is longer than normal.
Does anyone know if a large amount of App store apps in iTunes can affect how long it takes to open?
Or should I be asking this question at the iPhone forum?
    Thanks in advance, Deb

Hello back, and thank you both for responding. I had no idea there was two separate iTunes forums. I guess I'll go post to the right one.
I'm the only Mac user in a house of PC users, so my three guys are no help to me. Well, one of them has a Macbook, but he uses his desktop PC the most. Anyway...
I have 50 Gigs left on my hard drive and that's only because I had to do two "Archive and Installs" on my iMac last week. That left me with over 20 gigs in two "Previous System Folders". I'm going to delete them eventually to get that space back, but my problems were happening before when I had almost 75 gigs, and are still happening now. Nothing has changed.
My iTunes has maybe 10 gigs of stuff total, with most of it music, then maybe iPhone applications (probably 2 or 3 gigs), but only one short 45 minute video, and a couple of podcasts. Nothing else. I'm a middle aged mom, so I'm not much into iTunes except for my iPhone stuff.
So, I'm confused by iTunes reluctance to open, but will go post on the Mac iTunes forum.
Thanks for taking the time to respond to me!
    Greatly appreciated... Deb

  • Firefox runs extremely slow on 64 bit PC it takes forever to open bookmarks are we going to get a 64 bit firefox

Firefox runs extremely slow on 64 bit PC it takes forever to open bookmarks and also hangs when I try to open anything within firefox I have used firefox since it started on 32 bit systems until I installed it on my 64 bit a week ago and have had this problem and others since, are we going to get a 64 bit firefox

Thanks for getting back to me Dave!
The file is about 91 MB in size, with just under 400 scanned pages.
I’ve also encountered the problem when I’ve tried to OCR one of these old books.  I’ve had to do it 50-100 pages at a time, closing and re-opening the file each time.
Based on my online search for a solution, I had concluded that the 2 GB limit for 32-bit programs was the most likely source of the problem.  But I’m wondering now if Acrobat could use 2 GB  in processing a 91 MB file.

My I Mac, using 10.8.4 is very slow, mail takes forever to open and the spinning pinwheel starts every time I try to use mail.  any suggestions?

What year, screen size, CPU speed and amount of RAM installed?
How full is your Mac's hard drive?
How full is your Apple Mail?
How many applications do you run simultaneously in the background while working in another application?
Do you run any antivirus software on your Mac? Antivirus software can slow down the normal operation of OS X.
Do you run any "crapware" like Mackeeper or any other type of "crapware" like so called hard drive "cleaning" apps?

    Hey Hannah-O,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
So the Time preferences will not load, the fan is running at full speed, and the CPU is being used. You can try starting the computer in safe mode to disable nonessential items then restarting like normal. If it is still having the issue then reset the SMC. That can help applications that may not function correctly or stop responding after being opened.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

How long does it usually take from taping the icon until you can take photos?
My iPhone 4 takes 5 seconds, since you're using iPhone 4S I would imagine it should take no more 5 seconds.
Having said that, holding the Home and Sleep/Wake button until your iPhone restarts has shown to show improvements in overall performance (since it quits all applications). Users I know have also experiance better performance by updating to the latest version of iOS.
