Moved files to external HD without reading here first!

I moved my files before I read this and losts my playlists and play counts. Is there anyway I can fix this?
If I hook my ipod up to my computer will it get my playlists and play counts?
Thanks!

In answer to your question about getting playlists off the iPod, NO! There are 2 files, the .xml & .itl files, that are the metadata files for iTunes. These files are where all of your playlist information, etc. is stored. When you moved to the EHD, did you move these 2 files,also? If so, that is the problem. These files need to stay in your iTunes folder on the main drive as that is their home. Moving them back to the original location will probably resolve the problem.

    What a horrible thing to say. Just because you are inconvenienced, people shouldn't ask questions? What if they can't get it to display on a tv? What if they aren't sure if their PC is 1.1 or 2.0 USB? What would they benefit by using the 5R's? A lot of people are getting ipods and a lot of people need help. Telling them to reset it as a blanket statement is, quite frankly, one of the single most irresponsible pieces of advice I have heard yet. Just because you have read it 87 times doesn't mean that person has. How about teaching them how to use the search function? Hopefully, you'll take the time to learn that not everyone is as blessed as you in the ipod knowledge department. If it is bothering you so much that you are seeing the same posts over and over again, here's a suggestion- quit reading the forums for a few days. Better yet- use the 5R's. That might help with the problem you are having.

  • Moving files to external drive - need Mac and PC compatibility in future

    Hello -
    I'm moving a client's video files to an external drive so they have the original files. I'm moving both the DV files (always usable with program that accepts DV files) and the Mac project files in a separate folder (in case they ever work on them in a mac - includes all the referenced files). I know they won't be able to open the latter on a PC but I'd still like to include.
    BUT, can they get any external drive? If I plug it into my computer and move files, are they going to run into problems if they use then on a PC? Thinking about getting this one for them (they are paying but want a good price for them):

    Thanks for your help -

    Don't have a solution for you, but I did encounter a very similar bug.
    I was moving files from one iMac's external drive to another's internal drive, using a drag'n'drop move command on a directory. The move generated an error message, maybe the same as what you saw (I'm not sure), then aborted the move. Only one small file had been moved, and the source directory was gone! Not in the trash. Mac OS X 10.4.8 on both systems, an iMac DV and an iMac 24. The external drive was formatted as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)."
    This sure seems to be a basic programming mistake. So, for me, it's back to doing 3 steps: copy, verify, delete. It's lousy not to be able to rely on proper execution of a basic command, but I've never won an argument with a computer.

  • Append  new file to the old without reading the new file

    Is there anyway to append a new file (new.txt) to the old file(old.txt) directly without using BufferedReader to read each line of the new.txt.?
    Thank you very much for your input!

    Look at RandomAccessFile, the length and seek methods.
    If you're wanting better performance, you would need to test. I didn't check how the seek method positions to the specified location. If length() returns the EOF position, does seek() position directly to that location, or does it spin the file down from the start? And it very well might vary by os.
    If anyone has additional information or can correct me, please do.

  • Moved files to external hard drive, can't find my edits in lightroom

    I'm using Lightroom 4 on a Mac.
    I recently moved all my pictures onto an external hard drive, and nothing I've read yet has been able to help relocate my edited pictures in Lightroom.
    In lightroom, beside the Folder heading I have clicked the + and added my external drive - it shows it's green and live.
    All the pictures I originally had saved on my Mac hard drive are now showing on the external drive - good.
    In lightroom, the subfolders in my Mac hard drive are now showing with question marks that the files are missing - which they are, because they're now on my external drive.
    What my problem is, all the editing I had done on these photos in lightroom before is now gone. How do I get the editing work I had done on these pictures to show up on the external drive pictures? If I look at my pictures on the Mac hard drive, they show they're faded and missing, but it shows all my edits still on the pictures. On the external drive, it shows the original version of the pictures with no editing done.
    Note: I backed up my computer before I moved all my pictures, so if I need to put them back on my mac's hard drive I am able to do that.

    Update
    I was able to solve my problem. If anyone comes across the issue I was trying to fix, I suggest trying to move the files from WITHIN lightroom.
    Originally I had used my OS to move my picture folders onto an external hard drive, by just click and drag. Lightroom was not able to keep the editing I had done on those pictures after they were moved. I restored a backup on my Mac and put the folders back to their original location. Then within the lightroom program, I was able to move the picture folders (with their edits) onto my external hard drive.

  • HELP!!!  Moving files to external hard drive.

    I am in desperate need of help. I bought a new external hard drive to move all of my MP3 files to. I had about 40GB of music on my desktop hard drives and moved them all to the external hard drive. Not realizing that I had to configure iTunes first, when I opened Itunes, I found that there was a duplicate copy of EVERY song in the list (one that would not play b/c it could not be found) and that none of the songs on my many playlists would play (b/c could not be found.)
    I tried doing some research on here and changed the iTunes music folder location to the new hard drive as well as deleted the old folder, chose to 'Organized Library' and 'Consolodate Library'. And now everything is just a complete mess.
    The copies of all MP3 files still remain and the hard drive has organized all of the files in the new locations into multiple folder. I no longer just have a straight alphbetical listning of my music files (which is what I prefer).
    Can someone please help me fix this problem? I'm afraid to plug my iPod into the system b/c it might render all of the files on it unplayabe and will destroy the playlists. How do I get rid of all of the 'cannot be found files' duplicates and get the program to recognize that the songs in all of the playlists needs to be played from the new location on the new hard drive?
    Am I just screwed?
    MUCH thanks and appreciation in advance.
    I'm using iTunes 7 and Windows XP, by the way.

    Hey chuck4pele,
    Unfortunately, at this point, it is difficult, for me, to know what the situation is with out being there.
    What I can do is refer you to these, for possibly more understanding of the way iTunes works.

  • Sudden Problems moving files on External HD

    I have a Seagate Goflex 1TB external harddrive that I've been using for a few weeks. Suddenly, tonight the hd stopped letting me move files with the hd or to or from my macbook. I can still delete files though. It's been working fine since I got it and formatted it to some format that works with both Windows and Macs. Now it's reading that it's formatted as Windows NT Filesystem. I don't know if it's related, but it happened after I altered some .cdr files on the hd to open automatically w vlc player instead of Disk Image Mounter. Is there anyway to restore full accessibility to the hd without deleting everything since I can't move or copy anything from the drive right now. Thanks in advance! I appreciate the help.

    David, have you tried Disk Utility to verify that drive/partition?
    Your best bet is DiskWarrior...

  • Problem Moving Files to External Hard Drive

    I am trying to move two large video files and one large iMovie file onto a WD Passport external hardrive. I have no problem moving most files but with these three I get an unspecified error message part way through the copying process. All three of these files are uncorrupted. Anyone know why I might be recieving this message when copying these three files and/or how I can rectify this problem?

    Sounds like your external hard disk is formatted in FAT32 which has a 4GB file size limit.
    You should reformat that hard disk to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

  • Moving files from External Hard Drive TO Macbook Pro

    I just got my Macbook Pro and want to move some files from my external hard drive to my Mac but this message keeps pooping up: "There are some locked items in the Trash. Do you want to remove all the items, including the locked ones, or just the unlocked items?" and my options are "Stop" or "Continue". I selected "Continue" but the same dialogue appears with only the option "Okay" so when i click on it, nothing happens (i.e. nothing moves)
    However, my trash is empty so i don't get what the "locked items" are.
    Can someone please advise me on what to do?
    Any help would be really appreciated.
    If this helps, i have a macbook pro with retina display, 13-inch, Early 2015 (OS X Yosemite - Version 10.10.3)
    (3.1GHz Dual Core Intel Core i7, 16GB 1866MHz)

    Have you tried reformatting the drive with Disk Utility?
    If the external was formatted by windows, the it's likely in the wrong format.

  • Showing Text file as external table without trimming spaces

    Hi all:
    I am trying to display a text file from db sever with original spacing.
    Well it's not entirely related to APEX.
    This is how external table is created:
    create table u_x
      (rowline varchar2(255))
         ORGANIZATION EXTERNAL
           TYPE ORACLE_LOADER
           DEFAULT DIRECTORY ext_tab         <-- this is a dir i have created
           access parameters
           records delimited by newline
           fields notrim
           LOCATION ('aaa.txt')
    REJECT LIMIT UNLIMITED;
    on the first line of the aaa.text (its a report), it shows something like:
    Sat Dec 29                                                                Page 1
    but when I do select * from u_x , the result shows:
    Sat Dec 29 Page 1
    all above is done in sql workshop /sql command in APEX 4.2.1 (db 10.2.0.5)
    Is there any way to preserve the spaces between "29" and "Page"?
    (the result compressed all spaces in-between to 1 space).
    I think the ideal way is to invoke client's notepad to open the server's text file.
    anyway to generate the link?
    Thanks
    John

    Well, I have tried to download the file using below procedure.
    create or replace PROCEDURE download_bfile (
          directory_in   IN   VARCHAR2,
          file_in        IN   VARCHAR2
       AS
          lob_loc    BFILE;
          v_mime     VARCHAR2 (48);
          v_length   NUMBER(16);
       BEGIN
          lob_loc := BFILENAME (UPPER (directory_in), file_in);
          v_length := DBMS_LOB.getlength (lob_loc);
          -- set up HTTP header
          -- use an NVL around the mime type and
          -- if it is a null set it to application/octect
          -- application/octect may launch a download window from windows
          OWA_UTIL.mime_header (nvl(v_mime, 'application/octet'), FALSE);
          -- set the size so the browser knows how much to download
          HTP.p ('Content-length: ' || v_length);
          -- the filename will be used by the browser if the users does a save as
          HTP.p (   'Content-Disposition:attachment; filename="'
                 || SUBSTR (file_in, INSTR (file_in, '/') + 1)
                 || '";'
          -- close the headers
          OWA_UTIL.http_header_close;
          -- download the BLOB
          WPG_DOCLOAD.download_file (lob_loc);
          apex_application.stop_apex_engine;
       END download_bfile;
    I run it inside sql command in apex, but it does not show a pop window to save the file,
    it displays the whole text content of the file in the result window.
    Any idea why the save-as window does not pop up?
    thanks,
    John.

  • Having trouble moving files to external hard drive

    I have a freeagent pc&mac ext. hd that i usually use on my pc. I have used it on my mac in the past but i tried trasnfering all of the music from my macbook to my ext. hd and i got the following error message: "The item could not be moved because FreeAgent" drive cannot be modified". Does anyone know how i can resolve this issue? Thank you.

    I'm guessing that you can only WRITE files onto your ext in windows. But you can only READ files in ext from mac.
    FAT32 would support writing files in windows and mac, but I doubt that you can format it to FAT32.
    So if you want to write files to your ext from mac, then simply reformat it using DU

  • Trouble moving files to external harddisk

    Hey guys, anyone can advice me why can't i move files to my xternal hdd even though my xternal hdd has lots of space? I tried to change the sharing permissions of the external hdd but i can't even though i'm logged in as an administrator. Can someone help?

    Mac OS X at its current version (10.6.7) can Read NTFS, but not write it.
    NTFS is Windows New Technology File System, first used in Windows NT implementations on mainframes.
    If you need Read/Write for Macs only, use HFS+ Journaled. If you need Read/Write for Windows as well, FAT-32 works.

  • Copied files from external drive, now "read only" on Mac HDD

    I recently moved a large amount of files from my old PC to my new Mac. I copied the files from WinXP to a USB hard drive, then connected the drive to my Mac. After I copied all the files to the Mac I noticed that the majority of them are set with permissions that say "You can only read this file". How do I take ownership of these files so I can delete/rename some of them?
    Thanks!

    Select your file and open the information panel. By owner and access, change the permission.

  • Moving files from external hard drive to library

    Hi,
    I have recently bought a mac and transfered my library from my old laptop to it. There are a number of songs missing from the library though.
    I have a number of them on an external hard drive and want to move them from this to the library on my mac.
    As there are around 97 missing I don't want to this individually for each one and wondered if there was a way for itunes to look on the external hard drive and then copy the file to the library by itself. I can point the library to look to the external hard drive but obviously once i disconnect it, it can no longer play.
    Is it possible for itunes to look in the extrnal drive and then move the files itself?
    Thanks in advance

    And after you relocated the files, did you trash the 'originals' on your internal drive?
    (dumb question, I know, but I gotta ask...)

  • IMovie projects have broken link after I moved file on external hard drive

    I have all my iMovie projects on an external hard drive, and it was working fine...until I accidentally broke the links by going into my external hard drive, creating a folder I named "Videos," and dumping the "iMovie Project" folder and the "iMovie Events" folder (which iMovie automatically created for me) into my new folder. I was just trying to consolidate everything into one folder, but that messed everything up. Once I realized what I had done, it would not let me press undo. Then I dragged the iMovie Project folder and the iMovie Events folder back onto the main part where they originally were, and that did not fix it.
    Does anyone have any tips on getting my links back? I'd be so appreciative!! I have almost 200 projects of my kids that I can't access now. I have iMovie '11. Thanks so much.

    The iMovie projects and iMovie Events folders have to be at the root (top) level of the drive they are on (or at the top level of  the User/Movies folder), otherwise iMovie 9 won't see them.
    As long as you have not changed the contents of these folders, if you put them back at a root location they should automatically appear in iMovie.
    Geoff.
