MOVED: GT70 2pe domi pro Change Video Card Possible?

This topic has been moved to MSI Notebooks & Netbooks.
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=184143.0

As the FAQ page states, MSI doesn't support it.
Generally, it's said to be a 50/50 chance that it'll work.
I've considered upgrading my older GT70 0NE to something newer, and I'd probably use a GTX980M. Overall though, I just don't have the cash for it.
The 980M is a pretty decent upgrade, but even from the 880M it's not that huge. The difference between even my 680M and 780M/880M isn't HUGE enough to warrant actually taking the chance and doing it.
At that point, I'd probably just consider buying a whole new laptop.
But in your case, I'd probably just stick to the 880M or whatever you've got. You won't see that huge of an increase by switching except at huge 4k resolutions. I'd probably just pass it up until you need a new laptop.

  • Can I replace an ATI RADEON 9800 PRO-(256MB)-MAC EDITION with Mac ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb Video Card For G4/G5

    Hi,
I am trying to help a friend whose graphics card has bust.
The old one was an ATI RADEON 9800 PRO-(256MB)-MAC EDITION.
I've been looking on ebay and it seems a lot cheaper to get a Mac ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb Video Card For G4/G5.
Can I just swap them over?  The connectors are not identical according to the photographs.
    Thanks.

I'd like to thank everyone for all the really useful information in this thread. It helped me solve a similar problem, which I'll describe here briefly in case it helps someone else.
I have a 2004/5 dual 2 Ghz PowerPC G5 and an Apple Cinema HD display linked, as I later found out, with the now defunct ADC connector. The display suddenly started to look like that scene in The Matrix, when code falls like rain down the screen, and I worked out I needed to replace my Radeon 9800 pro video card (I discovered the board was blue when I removed a thick layer of dust).
I took japamac's excellent advice and bought a Geforce 6800 Ultra from the linked eBay seller in Hong Kong, who delivered it extremely quickly, along with the cables to plug it into the DVD drive power source and a CD with installation instructions. It was only then that I realised the card had two DVI connectors and my display needed ADC (I hadn't understood the difference).
eBay came to the rescue again with a seller who had a secondhand DVI to ADC adapter, which Apple produced  when it phased out ADC about six years ago but no longer sells. It has its own power supply and looks like a large version of the Mac laptop power cables - and has added signifcantly to the pile of spaghetti under my desk.
Installing the Geforce 6800 Ultra is fiddly, and a bit scary if you're not used to delving into the insides of a Mac, but the instructions were clear and illustrated with useful photos. The video cable has four connectors. Two fit into the end of the card, the other two (linked in a Y shape) form a bridge between the DVD/superdrive and its power cable. You have to remove the DVD drive, unplug it, and then plug one of the two Y video card connectors into the DVD power cable and the other into the DVD drive itself. Then you replace the DVD drive, plug the two remaining cable connectors to the video card and ease it into the old card's AGP slot.
Finally, with the G5 reassembled, plug the adapter's DVI connection into the back of the card, plug the Cinema Display ADC cable into the adapter block, plug the adapter's USB cable into the G5 (this enables the the USB ports on the back of the display to work), and power up.
At the time of writing, the display has been up and running for a couple of hours and all seems fine.
Thanks again everyone for all your help and advice. If it wasn't for communities like this, it would be virtually impossible to solve problems with old but still serviceable Macs.

  • MacBook Pro 15" video card problems (i think)

Can anyone tell me if this is indeed a video card problem?
    MBP 15" info (Dec. 2011)
Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
    OS X Lion 10.7.5
    This is what happened:
I use my mbp heavily because I edit a lot of videos with Premiere. I also use lightroom / photoshop alot + games. I also installed Parallels desktop late 2013. I don't know if that is relevant but anyway. Everything started late 2013 (a little after installing parallels actually) when there are moments when the audio wouldn't work and I couldn't adjust the volume. It would come back anyway so i didn't mind it. Then the fans were on high speed for little activity. After that the keyboard backlight couldn't be adjusted and wouldnt work. I ignored all of these cuz i wasn't troubling me at the time. In January i left for france to study - I use bike all the time and once stupidly placed my laptop on the basket going to school (rough roads). I had a class with html so I had to open Parallels, my teacher pointed out the fans and how loud they were. That day, parallels desktop said i must upgrade to windows 9 or it will restart every 2hours. I didn't of course. I didn't have time to.
After that (a few days later i think) my laptop would randomly turn into a black screen but it's still on (the power LED is on) I tried turning it off by pressing down the power button and then turning it back on. It worked the first time. During the first week, the frequency of it happening grew. It would do it almost 3 times a day. during that same week I tried to do an SMC reset. It fixed the keyboard light, fans and audio but not the black screen thing. It just keeps on happening around 1-3 times a day. It only happens when I'm using it btw, never when I just leave it. ALSO, after a few days, it would take longer hours to open my mbp again. I mean, the screen would turn black. i would turn it off, then on again. I will ONLY hear the hard drive moving but no startup sound and no grey screen and apple logo. nothing.
The following weeks after that, I asked a friend to help me out. He suggested that I install gfxCardStatus because he said it might be my video card. He instructed that I keep it on intergrated only. So I installed that and did what he said I thought it worked for a while because the black screens stopped happening (even when gfx keeps on going back to dynamic) BUT NOW, MY LAPTOP WOULD FREEZE (not turn black). I'd shut it down using the power button but it still takes me hours to open it again. Sometimes, I'd wait for the battery to drain because it would startup when i charge it (sometimes)
    I tried doing AHT as well to confirm the video card problem, but the results are no problems found. I really don't want to replace my logicboard here in france. everything is more expensive here. ;__;
Today I uninstalled parallels to see if that might have had anything to do with my problem now but i think that's just wishful thinking.
Can somebody tell me if this is really about the video card? Thank you

  • Final Cut Pro - Two Video Cards - Display Turns White

    MacPro Xeon 2.0GHz
    3 Gig Ram
    Two nVidia 7300 Video Cards
Two CRT Monitors and One HDTV
I have two CRT monitors attached to my original nVidia card. I recently installed a second video card and attached a third monitor to my DVI output (on the second video card)
I tell Final Cut Pro to display video on third monitor as full screen output. I can see my 720p (or 480p) display. When I press play, the entire screen turns White. (I've tried a CRT monitor, and my LCD HDTV via HDMI to DVI).
If I remove my Right CRT monitor from my graphics card and attach my HDTV (giving me one monitor and one HDTV) I can get full screen 720p play back. But I don't want to edit with one monitor! I am wanting to have my two monitor editing setup with the third monitor as my full screen display (720p).
Why does three monitors result in a white frame for playback? Do I need to configure something?

  • GT70 2PE Dominator Pro increasing static/white noise during different games.

    Hello.
I'm quite in a predicament here. I have an MSI GT70 2PE Dominator gaming laptop.
Every time I play a game[doesnt matter which one, ones demanding high specs and also with games that can run on toasters :p ] after a couple of minutes I start hearing this increasing static, white noise coming from my speakers or headset. After a couple of moments it also sort of disables my microphone as well. IE When in in VoiP while playing a game, after the noise increases my mic also stops working.
I tried everything I could think of. Reinstall drives, format the laptop, all the little advice people give in other threads about this kind of problem. I also sent it into repairs and they said it was fixed but alas it still isnt. I tried using different power adapters and that doesnt seem to make a difference.
One interesting thing is that when I just play on batter power - no issues at all. As soon as I plug in the adapter - the noise start building up again.
Anyone has any ideas what might help?

I have not been able to find a solution for it. I think it might be a voltage or heat problem.

  • GT70 2PE DOM

Hey all, hoping to get some input on my new Laptop and some issues I'm having
Bought the 2PE Dominator Pro 1040US a few weeks ago (great Unit) it comes installed with win 8.1
But since day 1 I've had the dreaded TDR when playing games
Usually its about an hour or so into the game when it happens, game will bottom out FPS, sound will distort and crackle, and then either I'll get a CTD with the TDR , or I manually exit the game, and will get a series of TDR at desktop, before the system evens out and resumes. I don't get a BSOD, and my temps seem to be within range
Dragon gaming app  reads 60C proc at load in game, and 72C Vid at load in game
Afterburner reads 71-73C Vid at load in game,
Those temps seem ok to me,
I always turn on Boost before I play a game, and the fans speed up no problem
Event viewer shows the ever helpful Event ID 14: NVLDDMKM
some things I've tried have been updating the vid card driver to the latest Beta 337.50 (using DDU)
I've set Nvidia power to be Performance instead of adaptive
I've disabled all the Killer Lan apps and programs
I've set windows power to performance
Cooling mat, A/C adapter w/ battery
    Set to use Nvidia card
I'm sure I've done other things I've probably forgot to mention, but It'll come to me
Surfing the MSI site isn't very helpful as the laptop doesn't have anything posted yet in the downloads section
I've had Nvidia for awhile, so I get that their drivers can be unstable,
I'm not sure what to make of it, regular desktop use seems unaffected, and games aren't displaying any other odd symptoms, (No artifacts, checkers etc) and as I mentioned games run Fantastic until the TDR events. If I quit and restart application BEFORE the one-ish hour TDR, system works fine for another hour
I hear people say its Dragon gaming center, Killer LAN, or any of the other MSI apps that come installed and compatibility issues with 8.1, Or that its drivers, or Faulty Card etc.
If any one has any other suggestions to try, I'm all ears, or if anyone has experienced something similar with another MSI laptop let me know.
    anyways, thanks in advance

sorry, used to forums where the TDR phrase is common
TDR stands for Timeout Detection and recovery (Display driver has stopped responding and has recovered)
If you hang out at the NVidia forums a lot you start to use their abbreviations without realising it
I'm in contact with MSI, they asked that I do a BIOS update and Firmware update, both of which I have done
I agree in that I think it might be hardware related
I should mention my GPU is getting to 93C with cooler boost 2 enabled. Not sure how normal this is, but think its quite high for having engaged the Cooler full blast
That is quite high, even for this laptop.
I'd say the card is a dud.

  • Ge70 2pe apache pro change keyboard color

Hey I have the ge70 2pe apache pro.  How do i change the keyboard color?  It did not come with any cd or drivers.

Do you have pre-installed OS or you install the OS by yourself?
Install the SteelSeries Engine and by using Fn+1, 2, 3, 4, you can change different keyboard layer and set the keyboard's backlight color in the SteelSeries Engine control panel.

  • GT70 2PE Dominator Pro Turbo Boost Doubt

    Hi!
I'm new into MSI laptops and I've bought an GT70 PE Dominator Pro.
All buttons and apps work perfect but when I press the G button nothing happens. It just light for a second and nothing else. My question is: How can I enable de Boost in this laptop?
    Thank you very much!!

The turbo boost feature is automatic. As long as your power settings include it. Typically only high performance is the only one that allows turbo boost. Turbo boost is only activiated if windows power settings allow for 100% cpu. 99% or anything lower disables turbo boost. This is typically set up this way, because of battery life. Running turbo boost, even when not needing this top speed, will make the chip run as fast as it needs to, so running cpu at 99% limits this turbo feature, but still leaves the 2.7ghz. This greatly increases battery. Personal experiences with this, I run high performance, and then I run the msi 'office' power settings. Doing stuff like this (web browsing ect) will get me 2-3 hours high performance setting, and 4-5 hours on office.
The turbo boost speeds you 'claim' 3.7 are only for single core. I'm not 100% sure, but it goes something like 1 core 3.7, 2 cores active its 3.5, and all 4 cores is something like 3.2. This is all non overclocked. And the biggest things with the 4810 chips that's in our gt70 dominator pro laptops is actually hindered by the tdp of the chip. The tdp is 47w. And unless you get the 4960mx chip, all the i7's have this 47w limit. That is, the total amount of wattage the chips will or can allow. So typical 'gaming' or 'workstation' loads, with turbo boost active, you will typically see 3.299 ghz. Those programs are very much typically multi core (4 core) loads.
I hope this helps. If not, just post a more specific question.

  • Mac book pro 15' video card on fault

i have my mac book pro 15" May 2011, i was working on it on friday but when i start the pro on Monday morning and the video was fail to show the apple window only  blue screen, when i send it to apple autherize work shop and the technical adviser claim that the video was on fault, for that they have to change the whole mother board, the cost of repair quoted to me at $1022.
i was so angry, why the apple product now a day was so not reliable, i have total of 3 mac book pro. 2x13" for my kid and 15" for myself, some time last yaer my kid's 13" mac book pro also having same problem and have the mother board change but was lucky when her's with in wanranty.
can any one help, is there any way to make apple have the repair done in no cost or lower.

It's a little late in the game, but I always purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan which extends your warranty from one year to three years whenever I buy an Apple product.
If you're out of warranty, you should just expect to pay for any hardware repairs.
That's just the way it is... other companies operate the same.

  • Mac Pro and Video Card. Which???

Hey Guys, Im planning on buying a Mac Pro and if I was not sparing any expense to get the latest & greatest, then would buying the "NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 512MB, Stereo 3D (2 x dual-link DVI)" ensure the best high end card I can buy for my mac? Is there a big difference between that and the "ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB" or the "NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB" ?? Not sure which to choose. Thanks

The Quadro is the fastest card you can buy.
Between the Quadro and the X1900, there isn't much of a difference performance wise, but the Quadro is very slightly faster then the X1900 in certain tasks (gaming, in particular).
Between the X1900 and the 7300, there's no real comparison. The 7300 is a baseline card. It will do everything the X1900 does- but not as fast and your frames per second (FPS) will suffer significantly in things where that matters (gaming, again).
If you aren't tied to the Quadro and you want something with any reasonable amount of speed to go with the capabilities of the rest of the machine (Quad Xeon cores), then go with the X1900. It's cheaper, and about the same speed as the Quadro.
The 7300 is, well, going to be slow compared to the X1900/Quadro.

  • What displays WILL work with 1st gen Mac Pro & 4870 video card upgrade?

I've been reading these discussion threads for hours.
I, like so many others, have a 1st gen Mac Pro with a 1900XT that is taking a dump on me.
My only/best option for replacing it is the 4870...
But SO many folks with 3rd party displays have had problems, though almost no one is commenting on which 3rd party displays DO work.
Can anyone help? Do you have this configuration and a 3rd party display that IS working?
I don't want to buy this card and find out I have to shell out another ton of $$$ to buy Cinema Display.
I have an LG Flatron Wide...
Can anyone confirm a 3rd party display that DOES work? I'd be VERY grateful!

I have the Acer 24". been fine for 18 months. I know several people using them

  • Upgrading Mac Pro (Rev1) Video card to 8800GT - Win XP OK?

    Hi all,
I have a Rev1 Mac Pro with the ATI X1900 graphics card. I'd like to order the Apple upgrade to the Nvidia 8800GT for better performance running games in Windows.
Currently, I have an XP SP3 Boot Camp partition. I've read some posts about problems users have had with the 8800 upgrade under XP.
Can anyone confirm that the 8800 upgrade will work under XP, or if I should switch to Vista? I'm anticipating sticking with DX9 unless that would make a difference in terms of compatibility.
    Thanks for any advice!

You can use any PC card for Windows only. I know there were problems in the past with XP drivers, but don't know if that is still true today (I'd be surprised, it is after all basically G92 series card, which is very common).
Personally, I think Vista 64-bit just makes more sense with Mac Pro at this point, more RAM, dual cpu, and it isn't like you don't have the power to run or that they would run poorly on that hardware.
Might give you some ideas games on Mac Pro running Vista:
