MOVED: K8 Diamond Plus Issues

Thanks for the replies.  If the drivers are not essential at the initial stage then that's fine with me - I should be able to install any drivers required from within Windows, which is as I first thought.  This leads me then to the main issue I am experiencing.
Once I've got into Windows and loaded on the nForce4 chipset drivers the system becomes extremely unstable.  The longest it can stay operational is about an hour before a brief BSOD followed by an immediate reboot.  This can happen whether I am at the machine or away with it locked, but it always happens.  When I get back into Windows, the OLA tells me an 'unknown device driver' is causing the issue - but nothing more than that.
I've run Eurosoft's PC-Check over all my hardware (outside of Windows), which reports all components are 100% error-free.  I am using the latest nForce drivers from MSI, as well as the latest BIOS (1.20).  Am using the latest Catalyst drivers from nVidia.  All Microsoft updates are applied.  My hardware is as follows:
MSI K8 Diamond Plus (new)
AMD64 X2 4400+
2x 1GB Crucial Ballistix PC4000
Crucial Radeon x1900xtx (new)
Soundblaster Audigy LS
Seagate Barracuda 120GB SATA
Seagate Barracuda 200GB SATA
BenQ DVD-RW
QTechnology 560W PSU (36A on 2x12V) (new)
I really am out of ideas now having been troubleshooting this for over a week with no success.  I have been in discussion with Crucial as at first I thought the memory was at fault, but all diagnostics say otherwise - it's only in Windows that the problems arise.
I'd really appreciate any assistance or suggestions anybody may have here...
Thank you.

I know this board can reach 300+ by reviews by Tom's Hardware. But I was wondering how I could get my FSB up there? I can't seem to get past the hurtle at 270. Anything above this will make the system fail to start up and I have to clear the BIOS again.
I lowered the HT to the equivalent of 3X, and CPU Multiplier to 8X using a venice core 3500+. I even tried adding voltage to the HT. I'm wondering if I'm missing something in this equation that stops me from getting 300+ FSB? The overclockable items are too many and unexplained.
If someone could spread some light on what else needs to be done, please tell me.
    My system is as follows.

    Hi dude,
I have the similar problem as well.  Sounds like you are in the bad shape, but yeah, try to loose your RAM settings.  First, all settings auto seem to be good, but it's actually not the case.  You have to set TRC and TRFC as higher than 12 and 14.  I am seeting those to be 14, 18, and it seems to be working great.  It will be better to set the burst length as 4 beats.  I don't like this board coz I can't set the drive length to be weak instead of normal detected by the Windows.  My system can post, but I got problems of playing 3D demos and games, which looks like it's the problem of motherboard.  Not mature enough.
    My rig:
    AMD Athlon64 3700+ @ 2.7GHz
OCZ Platinum Elite DDR600 2.5-4-4-10 Dual Channel
    Leadtek PX6800GT @ 425/1200 at 2nd PCIe slot

    thanks for the help..
i thought it was always like this
thats why i was concerned about
that is running memory into single channel.
you need to use DIMM1 & DIMM2 like Hans said to use Dual Channel.

You might get a better responce when you post in the correct area. The Via guys could not give a care about an NVidia board you know. LOL

  • Three MSI K8N Diamond Plus issues...

I have posted previously regarding an auto reboot issue and now have recieved some advice to try for that issue.  One of those suggestions is to flash to 1.2 beta 2, but I would like to be more stable before trying that option.  I am having the following three additional issues:
    - If I restart or shut down and turn the system back on within a few minutes, my second 6600GT does not show up and the Nvidia control panel obviously reports that it can't go to SLI mode because I have "removed" the second card.  If I shut down for 8 - 10 minutes the card is back and stays present until I repeat the scenario I described.
    - If I leave the PC running and unused for 5 hours or more the internet connection does not work.  A reboot fixes this issue.  This issue is present with both lan controllers (Marvell PCI-E and Nvidia PCI)
    - When I shut down the system my optical mouse and keyboard are still receiving power.  I have all power management options disabled in the bios.
For the 1st issue, I plan to put the cards on IRQ's 16 and 17 in the bios.  This is where they are when they are both active in the bios.  Other than these issues the system seems otherwise stable, works great during games (HL2, Oblivion, etc...), and does not hang.  Any advice regarding these issues will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

crazy - I am running the latest lan driver for both controllers, but I will try uninstalling/reinstalling in case they did not properly install.  Thanks for the info on the optical being lit.  My Abit NF7-S didn't do that, but if that is normal for this board I won't worry about it.
kakarocht - Definitely no oc'ing since I want it to be stable at normal settings before trying to oc.  The only thing I have altered is memory voltage up to 2.75v based on recommendation on my other thread.
I have tried the bios settings at default with the same issues.  I'm wondering if flashing to 1.2 beta 2 will help the remaining issues???
Regarding the IRQ, there is not any sharing.  I was thinking of assigning the IRQ's in the bios for the video cards to 16 and 17 in hopes of fixing the video card drop issue.
Regarding the reboot issue from my other thread, it may be corrected.  From Device Manager - "nvidia lan controller" - Advanced tab, I found a Wake on Lan from Power Off setting at Enable.  I disabled this and so far have not had the reboot problem.  I had been looking for the Wake on Lan setting in the bios, as with past motherboards.  Are there any other settings on the advanced tab that I should check to help the Internet drop issue I mentioned in my post?  Could running I-Speeder help?
Once again, I appreciate all of the ideas and I have taken all of the suggestions seriously.  I am out of town during the week so I won't get to try the suggestions until Thursday, but I will make note of any ideas anyone has.  Thanks again!  I am new to MSI boards and got very used to the settings on my NF7-S.  I appreciate everyone sharing their experience.

We are having a issue here with the Nvidia raid changing the raid from raid 0 to raid 2 all by it's self. This has happend twice now on the Diamon Plus board. We have tried all kinds of drives. Sata 1 Sata 2 from 4 companys with no change. We are also having the op system Windows give errors that I have never seen in 20 years of building computers .
We have contacted tech support by phone and they have been great trying to help us , but to no good out come. Tech support told us here at the shop that this is an issue that they are working on and trying to find a fix.
This board is a great gamer board if you can find a build of parts that it is stable with, but if not it is a on going problem.
We are also getting the boot error on the Raid that you are on some systems that we build.
I will say again that MSI tech support has been great in working with us on this, And we are also starting to see errors on systems that we put out with the Diamond Plus when the first came out for use. Systems that have been stable for about two months are starting to come back with issues with the drives and that is strange as one would think it would stay stable after this long running.
But in looking back on what has happend , all the issues seem to be due to the Harddrives or Drive controlers.  Now that could encompass the buss or buss controler and or many other factors. But we do think the problem is with one of these.
I use the diamond plus for my own gaming system, and it is fast. I love it and the changes I can make in the bios. But I cannot use the raid on the board . I have tired and it was not stable , and after two reloads I went to a fast 300 gig single sata drive. After that I have had no issues at all. And with this drive I am running as fast as I did with the raid. I would recomend that others take this route till a fix is found.

  • Anoying issue with K8N Diamond PLUS and overclocking.

I just got the motherboard wehn i overclock and restart the PC either from windows or BIOS etc. The PC will not boot and have to turn it off then turn back on. Apart from this annoying issue it's a great board better theen my A8N SLi Premium mostly due to the extra CPU voltage yay :D Is anyone else getting this issue?
    System spcs are
    AMD Athlon64 X2 4400+ @ 2766MHz (1.6v)
    2GB Crucial Tracer PC4000
    2x DELL Slient Geforce 7800GTX 256MB card
Espison 700w SLi cert PSU with EPS CPU voltage connected
    Koolance EXOS AI Watercooling
    MSi K8N Diamond PLUS
    2x 150GB Raptor X in RAID-0
    Coolermaser RC-830 w/ 4x 140mm + 3x 120mm fans

thats funny mine did that when i first got it , but when i received my new memory and video card everything was normal...so i dont remember if it was the memory or the VC..i just totally forgot about it..funny though i thought it was only me

  • My Diamond Plus has issues

    1. Can enable SLI using the 6600GT tab in video properties. Once enabled it can''t be disabled.
The computer reboots every time the 6600GT tab is clicked on and an error message is
displayed that the computer has recovered from a serious error. Have to reinstall the video
driver to disable it. Tried all the various drivers with the same result. Doesn't do this with my
         Asus A8N-SLI board.
    2. My Kingston KHX4000/R512 memory runs fine, but my new Geil Ultre X 2-2-5-2 1GB
kit only runs at DDR333. Various lookups and reboots at DDR400 no matter what timings.
         Board seems memmory sensitive.
    3. IDE channel doesn't behave right. Can disable dual IDE channel but when try to enable it again
the computer just reboots with the critical error message again. Again it doesn't do it with
the Asus board. have to enter safe mode and restore with a previous date.
Reasons I brought the Diamond plus.
    1. Liked the northbridge cooler. The Asus fan has a known issue and is prone to failure.
    2. SLI swiching is done by software and not like Asus hardware but it doesn't seem to work.
    3. Thought the 16 channel SLI would be better than the 8 Channel but was wrong. Maybe it will be
         in time.
    4. Asus support doesn't exist.
Tested video using the F.E.A.R. game performance test.
    1. On a 6600GT SLI setup there is a big jump in the maximum FPS. Was from 40 to 155 but
little difference on minimum FPS. Single 7800GT was only 105 max FPS but was 25 at minimum.
    2. The results were about the same on the Asus A8N-SLI and MSI K8N Diamond Plus.
    3. The only difference I see between using two cards on the Asus (8channel from each card) and
MSI(16 channel from each card) was the minimum FPS. Just a small improvement in the
minimum FPS. Eliminated by using the 7800GT.
I probably have to back to the Asus board until I find out want is wrong. I really like the MSI
over the Asus. Maybe a new bios or drive update will solve my problems.

I don't overclock. Fixed the issue with disableing dual IDE channel with foreware 16 6.85 which came out 2/2/2006.
still can't disable SLI through video properties without the computer rebooting with windows giving the recovered from a serious error message and remains with SLI still enabled.

yOu needseperate drivers for NV raid and Sil raid.
you need seperate drivers for xp and 64 bit xp
    msi diamond plus driver page.
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/driver/dvr/spt_dvr_detail.php?UID=710&kind=1
    Nv raid
    xp64
    javascript:void(window.open('/program/support/download/dld/spt_dld_file_record.php?folder=2&kind=1&name=NVRAID_XP64bit.zip','open','width=550,height=250,scrollbars=yes,resizable=no'))
    xp
    javascript:void(window.open('/program/support/download/dld/spt_dld_file_record.php?folder=2&kind=1&name=NVRAID_32bit(XP).zip','open','width=550,height=250,scrollbars=yes,resizable=no'))
    sil
    xp64bit
    javascript:void(window.open('/program/support/download/dld/spt_dld_file_record.php?folder=2&kind=1&name=Sil3132WHQL(64bit).zip','open','width=550,height=250,scrollbars=yes,resizable=no'))
    xp
    javascript:void(window.open('/program/support/download/dld/spt_dld_file_record.php?folder=2&kind=1&name=Sil3132_NM3001.zip','open','width=550,height=250,scrollbars=yes,resizable=no'))
save apropriate drivers to the floppy disk provided. mark on the disk which version they are and when they were released.
1st enable all sata devices in bios. Enable NV raid and sil raid in bios if nessisary.
2nd set boot priority to dvd/cd.
    3 save and exit
4 put in xp/xp64 bit install disk
5 as it boots up the lower left hand screen will say "hit f6 for additional drivers" or something similar.  Hit f6
6 press S to load drivers from the floppy.
    7 put correct disk in.
8 Select the nessisary drivers.  For NVraid there are 2 drivers to load from the disk. I did it by loading (1) then (2)
9 It will eventually reboot. when it does hit f10 to enter nvraids config. Set up your raid set up. exit out
10 continue with xp/xp64 bit install.
I've used sil in the past and it was nearly identicle. Have fun

  • K8N Diamond Plus memory issue

    Hi all,
Just replaced my ASUS A8N32-SLi Deluxe with the above board (what an excellent choice, glad to be back on MSI!).
Anyway - my problem is this:
When inserting two x 1GB double-sided PC3200 modules, the BIOS auto detects the memory as DDR333 rather than the DDR400 it should be. Removing one stick immediately fixes the problem, and shows up as DDR400.
The memory is Micron - MT16VDDT12864AY
Now I noticed that these sticks are on the compatibility list, but with one slight problem - the ones listed show the last 4 digits differently, but how different can they be?
Any suggestions would be most welcome, I need my extra GB of memory back!
    Rgds,
    czrsiNk

Quote from: Stick on 09-February-06, 16:48:02
once again, it is not a mobo issue since the memory controller is on the CPU. What kind of CPU are you using? Did you place your memory in slots 1&2 (green and purple)? what are the memory timings and voltages that you are using in BIOS?
Hello Stick, My new PC with a diamond plus mobo should arrive tomorrow (see signature for rest of bits). Over the last few weeks I've read most of what has been written here on this mobo. You have on a number of occasins commented that the memory problem, if it is a problem, is CPU related which must be true in the strictest sense but surely the mobo configuration and control systems must also play a part? If this were not the cae then would not other forums be commenting on similar memory problems with AMD 64 CPUs? If that is correct then the solution lies with MSI.
By the way, I make these comments to you because you appear to have consierable experience with MSI boards and I hope will shed more light on the issue rather than confuse.
Talking of confusion, I tried to banish that from my mind by downloading the PDF manual for the diamond plus. Its states that double-sided memory will only run in dual channel mode if 2 separate DImm channels are used (assuming you only have 2 sticks). Channel A is on Dimm1 and 3, Channel B is on Dimm2 and 4 - therefore, and the manual makes this clear, if you have two sticks the choice is to put the sticks in DIMM1 and 2, or, DIMM3 and 4. There are no other choices! Putting sticks in DIMM1 and 3 will not enable dual-channel and the result is DDR333.
But, the manual might be wrong, I might not understand it correctly -  both?
Bottom line - I'm confused and doubtful about exactly where the sticks should go. I think I have it right above.
Dear Stick, please jot down a few lines indicating what you believe the correct solution is for two sticks of double-sided memory running dual-channel at DDR400.
    Thanks very much, Tanimbar

  • K8N Diamond Plus Sound Issue

I connected my Creative Inspire P7800 90 Watts 7.1 Speaker with the Sound Blaster Auidiogy on board sound card. I can run the "Test Speaker" program and get sounds from each speaker, but I can not get sound when I play a CD or music file from the desktop.  What am I doing wrong?

    Quote from: SnOt_BuBbLe on 30-March-06, 11:59:47
If you are getting sound when you are "testing"  but not when trying to play files it could be that you didn't connect your cd rom to your sound card's auxillary (for playing cd or dvd) or you have certain file types muted...for example...it is possible you have wave muted...but midi is not.  check your volume control properties and see what is marked with a red X...creative is notorious for having some sources muted.
STUPID QUESTION #1, With the Diamond Plus Sound card having sound card on board the MB, where do I find the AUX of the sound card?
STUPID QUESTION #2 I recall years ago having similar issues with a sound blaster card, and yes it was related to some things being muted.  Where are those volume control property settings, and what are the proper settings?
