K8N Neo4 Platinum - Overclocking Troubles - Memory Timings (2T)

i had a similar problem at first, my system wouldnt post even at shockingly low overclocks, like 225 fsb, anyway i noticed that the 1,5 bios automatically set some strange timings for my ram, cant remember exactly what but when i went through the timings manually then i could clock up to 280 or so.  This is on 166mhz memlock, i still cant get a decent overclock using the 150 memclock or anything lower.
Contacted MSI but the 'technical support' department, although quick to respond, seemed absolutely clueless when it comes to overclocking.

    I just recently got a new MSI motherboard, but I'm having some overclocking problems.  The motherboard fails to post at anything over 235Mhz FSB.  In the BIOS I have already:
    1.)  Set the Memory to 166Mhz
    2.)  Set the HTT multiplier to 3x and 2x
    3.)  Set the CPU multiplier to 6X
    4.)  Changed HT width to 8/8 just to see if it had any effect
    That keeps all other components at stock speed or lower, so voltage adjustments aren't needed.  I have tried giving the memory more voltage becuase no matter what I do it runs at 2T timings.  I've also tried increasing the chipset voltage to compensate for the higher FSB.  None of this helps.  I am using the lastest BIOS available on the site (v1.5).
    My other hardware includes:
    Athlon 64 3700 (SanDiego)
    2048MB Muskin PC3200 Level 2 TCCD (4x512MB) - also tried 2x512MB and 2x256MB of GSkill PC3200
    HIS Radeon X850 XT PE
    Enermax 485w ATX 2.0 PSU (all voltages are within spec)
    Can anyone help me out with either the overclocking issue, or the 2T memory timing problem?  Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
    In the BIOS you must set the FSB:DRAM ratio to 1:1.
    Set the HTT (hypertransport Ratio to x4)
    Set the CPU ratio to x4 (just too see if it will work.)
    Set the FSB to 250Mhz
    Set the Vcore to 1.45v.
    Set the memory timings to SPD (or default values for DDR500)
    Set the memory voltage to 2.7v, 2.75v or 2.8v.
    Save and exit
    Then let it boot from the memtest bootdisk.
    Use memtest to see if it is ok, test for a long time, over 1 hour.
    http://www.memtest.org/download/1.55.1/memtest86+-1.55.1.floppy.zip
    Tight timings and high FSB is even better
    I have the same problem I can go as high as fsb 219 without tweaking anything but the FSB. My system is about the same only my ram is ddr 400 so what should my mem volt and timg should be set to?

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum vs Crucial Memory...

    hey all - I've just purchased a new K8N Neo 4 Platinum board with 4 sticks of 512mb Crucial PC3200 memory.  It's running a little sluggish.  Can anyone tell me what my memory settings in the bios should be?
    here's more detailed memory info from crucials website:
    Module Details:
        * Module Size: 512MB
        * Package: 184-pin DIMM
        * Feature: DDR PC3200
        * Configuration: 64Meg x 64
        * DIMM Type: UNBUFFERED
        * Error Checking: NON-ECC
        * Speed: DDR400
        * Voltage: 2.6V
        * Memory Timings: CL=3
    -free

    so, will running four sticks (2GB) at 333MHz be better than running 2 sticks (1GB) at 400MHz?  Also, even running these two sticks seems a bit slow.
    I'd really like to get 2GB of memory to work.  Would I be better off just getting a couple 1GB sticks?  If so, can anyone recommend a brand that works with these boards?

  • K8N NEO4 Platinum-SLI - 4 Memory Sticks?

    I read somewhere that there was a problem when populating all 4 memory slots with this board.  Is that true?  I'm not overclocked and I want to add 2 more matching 512mb sticks of curcial memory to the 2 already in there.  I just thought I's ask before I spend.  Thanks.

    Hi!
    It's not correct to use the word single sided /double sided when it comes to this matter of the A64 cpu's
    memory controller .
    SD/DD is short for single density and double density .
    It's upto how memory controller and chipset see the memory .
    This is a sisoft sandra report on the memory of 2*512MB modules.
    It has to do with banks . single bank or double bank .
    The modules migh be double banked even if all is physically mounted on one side of the mudules .
    Usually this only means they have used larger dimm chips in meg size and need fewer to make out 512MB total.
    The correct thing to do is to find out the bank organisation of your modules .
    If the banks are organized to be two 256MB density on a 512MB module it's double bank (nomatter how it looks physically).
    If they are shown as four with your current crucial modules you are in the same boat as others .
    You will find out this by using sisoft sandra and probably some other utilities too .
    Let me repharse then.  If I have 2 banks containing only 1GB, then can I add 2 more identicle banks and still be able to use them in duel mode at at 2T?

    You've sussed I've got problems as a beginner even on using this forum. EG I've tried to put in my computer stats but not sure they are in.
    I've read that my mainboard can as a socket 939 use the dual- Core processor X2 and up to FX 60. However according to sisandra my board is not supporting dual core. Which is right?
    Thanks
    Nope, that's false info.

  • Unstable: K8N NEO4 PLATINUM SLI or memory or videocard?

    Currently:
    New build is unstable. After approx ten minutes more and more short shimmering horizontal lines appear on the screen ultil cumputer shuts down. I hear  one beep before this happens.
    History:
    No post even after I replaced the motherboard. A computer store checked it, said problem was the videocard. They got it to post but it was unstable after 2 minutes. PC seemed stable when they used a different card. I replaced my videocard, still unstable with my replacement videocard. Adjusted BIOS, memory voltage, tried DRAM auto and manual safe settings. No luck.
    The memory is supposed to work with this board, however this post had problems: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=51997.0
    I emailed EVGA but they have not replied as yet.
    Given the symptoms and history, whats seems to be the problem?  ???

    Hi,
    Sounds like a power problem to me.
    Have you got the additional power connector plugged into your Graphics card from the PSU? This is needed for the 7800 series as they draw too much power from the PCI-e slots otherwise.
    Make sure that if you do have it plugged in, that it is seated ok.

    Grimster i agree totaly with jeanguy, you need around 25-30amps min on these boards, so try a mates psu.
    Do I really need more than 18a with my system? How much money (ballpark) in US dollars do you think a adequate PSU for my rig would cost???
    I am really thinking of just takeing it back and getting it replaced with the same mobo and see if that works.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI memory incompatibility

    Sorry if it is an duplicated post, but i'm in a hurry and can't find nothing about this subject.
    I'm sure i'm not the first to have this problem.
    My memory (Samsung DDR 400Mhz - 512Mb) does not work on my MB. Though a friend of mine has a generic type 256 and it works just fine. With my memory the computer doesn't turn on, and start that beeping thing...
    I hope you guys won't worry about bad english (I'm brazilian).
    Thanks.

    Hi again,
    Well, if your RAM works fine on that computer, you can do some things to clear things up between your RAM and your Mainboard. You will need your friend's RAM once more to do this, as yours refuses to work yet:
    1. First of all, and I know it seems a little dumb, make sure your RAM is installed correctly. As you may know by now, DDR RAM only fits in one way. If installed correcly, you should barely see the gold contacts of your RAM.
    2. Try to find out if your RAM is supported by your K8N Neo4 Platium, by reading the Test Report :
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_trp_detail.php?UID=637
    If SAMSUNG memory is listed there, it will appear as "SEC". Please note however, that many memory manufacturers use SAMSUNG chips for their memory sticks, so it may be a memory stick made by Kingston, Corsair, GoldenRAM, Spectek, etc. or even be a Generic Brand.
    3. If you have not updated your K8N Neo4 Platium BIOS yet, this could be a good time to do it. Be sure to:
    * Find, download and use ONLY the correct BIOS for your mainboard. For that look for it by using two IDs: The Mainboard Model (K8N Neo4 Platium ) and the mainboard Model Number (MS-????). You will find these numbers between the PCI slots of your mainboard, write them exactly as they appear there and then look for a BIOS update for that specific model.
    * Prepare, in a NEW floppy disk, a BIOS rescue disk, just in case something go wrong during the process. To do so, please read : http://www.msi.com.tw/html/support/bios/note/boot.htm
    * Be sure to disable any BIOS WRITE PROCTECT function your board may have. It could be a hardware protection (via jumper) or a software protection (via BIOS)
       If its a hardware protection, set your jumper to WRITE ENABLE. If a software protection, set the BIOS WRITE PROTECT feature to DISABLED. If you can't find this feature, or don't know where are they located, please check your mainboard manual for it, and follow the instructions to disable the BIOS WRITE Protection, before attempting to flash the new BIOS.
    * Run the BIOS update from a DOS prompt if possible. For that, use a NEW floppy disk, as old disks may just fail in the middle of the operation and you may end with a useless mainboard.
    * Do not power off or reset your PC during this process or you may also end with a useless mainboard.
    * If you can connect your computer to a working UPS before attemping to flash the new BIOS, it would be great, as it will continue to supply power to your computer in the remote event of a power failure (Blackout or "Apagon" in spanish)
    * VERY IMPORTANT : Let the process to FINISH by itself. It may take a while, but please do not reset or power off your PC. Just power of or reset your computer ONLY when the Flash Utility directs you to do so.
    4. Once you have flashed the most recent BIOS to your K8N Neo4 Platinum mainboard, try your memory again. It may work now. If it doesn't then you could be right about some incompatibility between your RAM and your mainboard.
    For now this is all I can suggest you. It doesn't appears to be a Power Supply Unit (PSU) related problem as your mainboard works well with your friend's RAM.
    Well I hope this helps a little.
    Good luck!

  • K8N NEO4 Platinum (MS-7125) DIMM Memory Setup

    im planning to install two Kingston value ram KVR400X64C3A/512 on my K8N NEO4 Platinum board, this two modules although identical feature double side chip arrangement, i an also well aware from reading the board manual that dual channel installation of these modules will actually slow down the performance of the memory,
    what would be the best setup for these to modules?
    im planning on installing one module in DIMM1 and the other in DIMM2, is that the best recommendable arrangement for this type of DIMMS?
    also this DIMMS use 2.6v, and the board default setup is 2.5v, should i leave the default settings or do i need to make any changes in the bios configuration for these to work properly?

    I would go with a dualchannel config.
    Confirm dualchannel mode on boot screen or with cpu-z software
    http://www.cpuid.org/cpuz.php
    To compare differant memory configs, you can get a rough performance idea by running sisoft sandra mem.benchmark.
    http://download.guru3d.com/sandra/
    Never go below RAM voltage recommendation.
    I rather upper the voltage to 2.7 for best stability.

  • Memory Controller not available - K8N NEO4 Platinum Ultra

    Hi Experts!
    I have typical problem in my PC.  I need reply only from experts.  Newbies please excuse.
    My system displays the following info in POST.
    VENDOR / DEVICE     CLASS      DESCRIPTION         IRQ
    ===================================
    10DE        005E        0580       Memory Controller     NA
    If anyone can correctly PIN POINTEDLY identify why this is displayed, it will be much helpful
    As such I face no difficulty with my system.  But this message very much annoys me.
    Thanks.
    My PSU Details:
    400W.  +12V 20Ampere.  (This is the maximum I could afford in our indian PC environment.)
    AMD 3000+ Winchester 90nm. CPU.
    K8N NEO4 Platinum Ultra Mother Board.
    512 MB Hynix PC3200 Memory.  (2*256)
    80GB Western Digital.
    Ordinary PCI VGA 2mb card.
    Samsung CDROM.

    There is no driver for memory controller with A64 (nforce3/4) as stated earlier .
    You see this in the memctrl.inf for UDP 5.10 , driver pack for nforce 3 and backwards down to nforce 1 .
    Memctrl is only added to the 5.10 package for backward support to nf2 and lower as this is a unified driver package and
    the memory controller is at chipset level on the motherboard that resides in the external northbridge on nf2 chipsets and lower .
    What you see is just a vendor/machine id description and is just as it should be .
