"...board is relatively recent."
If you think 7 years as "relatively recent" that is. That's plenty of time for caps in PSU & MB to go bad, especially in PSU and not knowing what the original owner had, bad PSU is a good possibility for damaging MB.
Original was a Corsair 400 apparently.
It depends how you interprete "relatively". All my stuff is older than that so to me it's recent.

The fan will spin at a certian speed depending on the temperature of the chip.  Example: at 20degrees the fan spins at 2000rpm and at 30 degrees the fan will spin at 4000rpm.  This is normal.
k thx i appreicate the help that took a load off my back. at first i thought id have to go get another MOBO.

  • MSI K8N Neo4-F booting issues

Ok, well I'm a n00b and this is only my second build.  When I first put everything together, the system started right up and I was able to reboot no problem to upgrade the OS etc.  However when I gave it to my parents, it started having some problems booting.  Sometimes it boots up right away (if it's been off for a while)...however if you restart it, the fans run, but nothing happens for several minutes.  Then all of the sudden it beeps and starts booting like nothing is wrong!  So while it's sitting there doing nothing, I checked the D-bracket and it looks like it's sitting on the processor initialization:
MSI K8N Neo4-F running Bios version is 1.9  - the only setting I changed was removing the logo
    Windows 2000 SP3 which I updated to 4
    AMD 64 3700 +
Power Supply - Antec smart power 2.0 500 watts
liteon DVD burner - IDE primary master
a single 250 GB SATA seagate hard drive which is partitioned into 2- IDE 3rd master
2 sticks of 1 GB Cosair Value Select
    ASUS EN6200TC256 - Geforce 6200TC 64MB 256MB PCIe
I did try reading through the forums first.  I'm not sure if I should clear the CMOS or flash the bios.  At this point I guess I kind of lack the confidence to make a decision due to lack of experience and the fact that it's not my computer I'm messing with.  So guys, can you help a girl out?  Any advice is much appreciated

    Hello Jewels,
have a look at this thread: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=80294.0
Maybe, it's the solution to your problem.
    Bye.
Your link to the other thread was enlightening.  A couple of things.  My father did install a card reader.  However, I'm unable to find those particular settings in the bios.  My father also has logitech's mx3000 wireless keyboard and mouse hooked up.  I unhooked the little reciever it came with and hooked up a standard keyboard and mouse, and what do you know, it boots fine.  Which explains why I had no jproblems when I set the computer up initially.  I'm sure he's going to want me to find a way to use them though.

  • K8N Neo4-FX Boot Issue

    Hey all,
Im new to this forum so forgive me if I do not address my problem to you in the correct fashion.
Im running Windows XP Pro SP2 on a K8N Neo4-FX board with the NVidia Geforce 6600 GT and an AMD 64 3600+.
I have this issue were when I boot for the first time in the day, my computer locks up when trying to load into Windows, it does not load any Icons but you can see the desktop. After a reboot, in an attempt to get into Windows again, it now locks up on the Motherboard bootscreen for a random amount of time, usually atleast 3 minutes. I disabled the boot screen so that it would show me what its trying to load behind the Motherboard boot screen and it gets stuck on trying to load/check the harddrives. Eventually it realises there all there and boots into Windows without issue. It usually requires 2 reboots before you can get into Windows. Now If I Boot up for the first time in the day and leave the computer at the login screen of Windows for about 5 to 8 minutes and then attempt to login and boot Windows, it hass no drama's. Interesting huh? It gets better.
I believe a secondary issue is tied into this as well. Once Windows is booted and I try to watch any type of media, all I get is a blank outline of where the video should be playing, sound working and playing correctly. This effects all media except Movies (.mov) which work on all occasions. No matter how many times you reboot, it does not allow you to watch any media, only hear it. However if you shutdown and boot again all media works without issue.
Now ill give you a minute to soak that in...
My original thought was, "Dodgy install of Windows", so I formatted and reinstalled a COMPLETELY NEW installation, even differant OS(to XP Pro from Home Ed) and I still have the same issues.
This leads me to the conclusion that the Board/Card is faulty. However if any of you experts or any other people can shed any light or similar experiences on this, it would be much appreciated!
    Thank you,
If you want anymore info MSG me.

  • K8N Neo4 Plat. boot delay with Canon MP390

    Hi everyone!
    My problem is the following:
My K8N Neo4 Plat. based computer got a huge delay (5mins!) on POST at boot (right after CPU name listing) when my Canon MP390 multifuntion USB printer is connected.  I already know its caused by a conflict between the printer's card reader and the mobo, something maybe related to the mobo trying to boot on the card reader.  Could be something else, but for now that's the only explanation i could find.
I red all post here concerning USB boot problems (or delays) and tried everything i could and red without results
Things that have been done (and much more!) :
    - Flashed to latest v1.5 BIOS
    - Disabled booting to other devices in BIOS leaving only floppy, cdrom and HD as bootable devices
    - Disabled support for USB KB/storage devices in BIOS
    - Unplugged Mitsumi floppy/cardreader combo drive (USB internal)
    - Unplugged front panel USB and D-Bracket2
    - 2 days of various tests with other computers, printers, psu, USB devices I had in store
I'm about to give up on this one!  ..  Anyone got ideas other than buying a new multifuntion printer?  Could it be a defective mobo?
    Thanks!
    Rivendell
    Computer specs are:
    Athlon64 4000+, MSI K8N Neo4 Plat.
    2x512MB PC3200 (OCZ 1GB KIT PN: OCZ4001024PDC-K)
    Sapphire X850XT PCI-E 256MB, WD Raptor 74GB SATA
Thermaltake Silent Power 480w PSU, NEC 16X DVD-+RW
Mitsumi floppy/cardreader combo drive (unplugged for testing purpose)

It might be related with BIOS. The BIOS 1.65 seems to resolve the quick boot issue. You can get it from MSI to try it.

    K8N Neo4 Platinum - Overclocking Troubles - Memory Timings (2T)

i had a similar problem at first, my system wouldnt post even at shockingly low overclocks, like 225 fsb, anyway i noticed that the 1,5 bios automatically set some strange timings for my ram, cant remember exactly what but when i went through the timings manually then i could clock up to 280 or so.  This is on 166mhz memlock, i still cant get a decent overclock using the 150 memclock or anything lower.
Contacted MSI but the 'technical support' department, although quick to respond, seemed absolutely clueless when it comes to overclocking.

  • Neo4 Wont boot.. no screen..HELP

Sighh.. I just recieved my new ram today and i still have the same problems =/ the bracket stalls on 3  red lights and 1 green light.. = memory problem.  I have tried just 1 stick of ram.. dual.. every combination you can do..cleared cmos.. still wont boot up.. The motherboard is on my table out of the case with just RAM and CPU.. and D-Bracket LED shows LEDs 1 and 4 orange for a second, , then it goes to the memory error sequence (3 red LEDs, 1 green LED). All of the connected fans are spinning, including the CPU heatsink fan.. I think its the motherboard fault.. because ive tried 3 different ram sticks with this motherboard.. still the same problem.
Ive also took out the RAM and VID CARD and resetted my cmos.. and when i power it up, the dbracket said im missing memory.. so i reseted my cmos and added the ram in.. and it still saids im missing memory =/ but ive tried 3 different ram sticks.. and its still the same.
    please help

I think you may have a bad board.  You got this from Newegg right?  Make an inquiry for an rma.  The board shouldn't need any mysterious methods in getting it to POST.     You've went the distance in trying to get this up and running.  As long as you haven't tried to get your system up and running without having a hs/fan on the processor, I strongly lean toward you having gotten a bad board.  It happens.

got 3.8 flashed up, my system still reboots if i hit tab while it is doing a full memory check on a cold boot (notice last night it dosen't do a memory check on a warm reboot).
I was at least able to load into windows 2k with this bios though (unlike 3.7 that froze on the windows splash/boot screen).
I am going to try my friends memory and video card (which are duplicate to mine) and if it still reboots every time i hit Tab while it is doing a memory check i am going to RMA the board monday.
I tried for several hours to get the system to "fail again" in windows and i have had no luck at getting a second lockup/failure.
also the main C: (the raptor 74gig) said the SMART information was all in spec (also ran the WD diagnostic tools on it and everything passed).
I figure all i can do is RMA the MB which i am 99% sure will fix the weird boots (slow to come on if it has had 100% power loss/cut), and thenwhen it is doing the POST memory check and i hit Tab (from a cold boot) it reboots again, also the few lockup's i had at the POST splash screen (which i haven'g gotten to repeat either but i didn't try too hard only about 5-8 reboots)
I really feel these issues are motherboard issues. As for what happened in windows (with it freezeing and document and settings getting corrupted/renamed) i just do NOt know if that is associated with the other ones, or if it was a completely seperate fluke and i am just not gettong concerened about these other issues (that i have had from day 1)
Thanks for the assist all, Hopefully RMA and getting a repaired/refurbed MB will fix all my issues. I hate having an unstable system, but when it is a unrepeatble crash/freeze it makes it SOOOO difficult to diagnose if you don't have weeks to work on it.

I think this is related to the 219mhz HTT boot issue (as I was looking around the overclocking forums). I'm actually going to try using clockgen to see if if works. It was said in the topic that this is only on Winchesters.. But I have a San Diego.
    By the way...
    Quote
Are you setting the 2.5-3-3-7 manually or allowing the BIOS to auto set them?  If auto that may be a problem and if manual are you putting the 2.5, 3's and 7 in the right place?
I manually set the timings to the timings of the RAM.
    Quote
    Any performance option enabled?
Other then 1T command rate, nope. Aggressive Timings is disabled in the Cell Menu. I have tried disabling 2T command rate, doesn't help. I wouldn't run the system with 2T anyway. This RAM is rated at 1T at 250mhz (which I have memtested it at).

Have you tried 4x or 2.5x HT link speed?
    Yes, no change.

How the hardware monitor screen look?  Good voltages, good CPU temp?
Voltages are constant. Both System and CPU temp at around 28c.

What BIOS rev did the board come with?
I'm not sure.. I have updated the bios though (now at 5.30).

    I realize that now :P

  • K8n neo4 wont post after chipset heatsink replacement.

After I replaced the heatsink fan on the NB(it died recently) the machine wont post. I built it the first time, and everything is hooked up like it was before, never had any booting issues. The D-bracket gets up to the "Bios Sign On" and stays there. The screen is at the "Platinum" logo display, and neither tab nor delete get a rsponse. ANy ideas on what I did that is sticking me?

I have followed through several checklists on troubleshooting for the board(cmos battery removeal, starting up and adding one component at a time{this is where i found the no beep alarms for missing parts}, barebones start up and all tje like, and still its a  no-go.  I dont get any warning beeps listed for the bios, just one short beep on powerup like the board has done sence day1.  The lights on the d-bracket say the same thing, Bios Sign On, I'm at a total loss, and it looks like I'm going to end up replacing the board.

Anyway, when you're not content with the bios you flashed, use the old one.
Don't flash unless it's absolutely necessary.
