MOVED: K9N-F with X2 4400+ : bios update with Vista

This topic has been moved to BIOS.

OK let's take these one at a time. Always a good idea.
1 AGP lock is in the Cell Menu. It is called AGP Frequency. ^^ is the normal lock for NVidia based Vid cards. 77 or 66 can both be tried for ATi cards. Some folks have their ATi cards like set to sync with CPU better and that is unlocked. You will have to test that one with your particular ATi card. I would start with 66 and go from there.
2 - This is one that you have to test for. You can test this simply by benchmarking each setting and see where the sweetspot for your card is. Mine is set to 128 and I get my best benchmarks at that setting.
3 - Newer cards and notably the NVidia cards like mine default to a much higher number. The higher the latency the more you will be stuttering under heavy gaming and 3D rendering. 64 is optimum so leave that one be.
4 - 1T is much better than 2T. However not all RAM will run at 1T so you need to test this. Let's not get to other RAM timings just yet. Test this one with SiSoft Sandra running the memory Bandwidth test. A higher number is better.
OK now for some basics. Start with your Hypertransport (HT Frequency in the cell menu in Bios) set to 800Mhz. This will allow you to go beyond stock settings on your CPU Reference clock (CPU FSB Frequency in the Cell Menu in Bios).
Raise the FSB in the cell menu just a little at a time. Usually 5Mhz. and test with each step you make. You should easily hit 220 but you may stop or start to lock up at any steps much higher than that.
Before we go further see how much of this you can accomplish. If the machine acts funny or locks, BSOD, or anything out of the ordinary then stop and go back to previous settings. You may have to do a Bios reset in order to reenter Bios again.

    Hello all
I just updated my X301 (2776LEG) with the 3.12-1.05 bios. Now my laptop won't start up when running on battery, it powers on for a short while and powers off again. This cycling keeps on going (after 30min I switched it off!) but as soon as i connect the power adapter it boots fine. Seems like this bios update f****ed up the battery power part of the computer....
I tried the bios battery trick but it only worked on the first boot and after that the same problem is present.
I have added 2gigs extra memory and a ultrabay battery and it has been working 100% for about a year now. This error started right after the bios update...
Thought that a reflash of the bios would solve the problem but i cannot reflash the bios with the same bios version...
    Any ideas ?
    Kind regards
    Tommy

Read below information first before doing update. On top of that, if you need BIOS update, flash to version 50V first.

I have a Tecra S3 notebook and I tried to install vista but it says i need to update my BIOS. Well I already have the latest version (v1.3) and no vista support.
    Any help is appreciated
    Thank you

    Hello eddie
There is no much to say. If your unit has sticker Vista capable Toshiba will support it for Vista upgrade. When not I dont believe you will find Vista BIOS update in the future.
My Satellite M70 is also not Vista capable but I am really lucky and have preinstalled Vista on second partition.

  • K9N Diamond - Wont boot after BIOS update

Just attempted to update the BIOS on my PC and it now wont boot.  Used LiveUpdate with the Windows flash option (don't have FD drive).  The lights on the D-Bracket 2  get as far as LED 2 Green, 1,3,4 Red.  I have already tried to Clear CMOS with no joy.
Any suggestions on how to proceed much appreciated  - and yes, I already know, I've probably done something stupid
    Thanks

power down PC, remove power cord from the PSU, push several times power button to drain capacitors, then Clear CMOS and leave only one memory stick into DIMM slot close to CPU socket. pull back power cord and try to boot.
in a future do not update the BIOS for no reason....(only becouse its new, only becouse new BIOS maybe got a new logo and e.g...)
Looks like I'm back in business now.  I found similar instructions at this location  http://www.bosamar.com/K9N/trouble.html and followed the First Procedure.
Booted ok with one mem stick, in bios fail safe mode.  I counted 7 short beeps while booting then one long beep.  Not sure if this is ok.  Read about bios beeps here https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=82221.0 and the final long beep seems to indicate a pass???.  Anyway, Vista appeared to come up ok and I checked everything in the hardware device manager and all looked fine.
Proceed to reboot with all mem sticks back in place, again same beeps but Vista coming up ok.
Next I switched bios to optimized defaults, but now 6 short beeps - no long beep.  Windows looks ok.  6 beeps appear to indicate a keyboard problem, but kbd seems to work fine???
System looks ok now, but not sure if i should look into those beeps a bit more?  BIOS now at 1.3, should I leave as is or revert to an earlier revision?
One thing I know that I am going to do is to install the FD drive from my old PC
    Thanks for all the help.
BTW, the reason I did the BIOS flash was as a last resort to get my sound to work.  Tried the various creative driver as suggest elsewhere on this forum but without success (as of yet there is no official vista compatible audio driver for my mb from MSI).  The JAUD1 connector looks to be connected as specified in manual (but no audio from either the front nor real panel audio connectors).

Unfortunately the board is now bricked. As it doesn't offer a backup bios it can only be reflashed with an SPI flash programming device. Therefor you need to contact a pc-shop or MSI for saving it. If still under warranty you can also rma it as an official MSI flash option failed.

  • Tecra A10 - BIOS updater doesn't work on Windows 7

Upgrading BIOS for TECRA A10/M10 and Satellite Pro S300/S300M to version v1.90 using P0065v190.exe (bios-20090304141534) fails with message:
"[Error] BIOS Update is not supported OS. Unsupported OS or service pack is installed."
Note: Executing as an Administrator returns the same error.
Probably Windows 7 is not supported but, it must be an explicit protection since the Vista version should work in 7. There's any updater parameter to skip this protection?

BIOS update is designed and tested for certain OS. Win7 is not on the market and at the moment Toshiba offers tested BIOS updated for Vista only.
Sorry but what else to say. You probably know how sensible BIOS update is and how dangerous it can be. So don't play with this and don't make not-tested experiments with this stuff.
In few months Win7 will be on the market and Toshiba will start official support. You can wait few more weeks isnt it?

  • Bios update on an Tecra M4?

I have a 2006 Tecra M4 and was checking it out for Vista compatability - it looks like thats a no-go at the moment (perhaps a whole other subject though, I have a 'windows vista compatible' sticker and its far from compatible as far as I can see)
However, it did prompt me to try and update the BIOS. According to the download page I can do this via windows rather than make a boot CD. The downloaded file has no .exe though. Am I looking in the wrong place? Is there a BIOS upgrade for an M4 with an .exe in it somewhere?
I have tried a search here and in support in general but I'm not seeing any answers that actually help with this. Updating from a CD makes me nervous so please help me find the file!
    Thanks.

    Hi,
I used the Tecra M4 beta bios update for Vista when it was available on the USA site. It was the only way I could get Vista to perform an install (Vista new I needed a bios update and would exit the install). Once I updated the BIOS, Vista installed just fine. I have since downloaded and installed the updated drivers and applications from Toshiba and all is work perfectly. Toshiba has posted all of the updates in the support section for my model since the official launch of Vista and taken down the beta Vista page where all of the beta drivers were for all of the different models. I am concerned that they have posted all of the updates, but the BIOS update I had to use is missing from the update list! Does anyone know if they plan to post a final BIOS update, or was the bios just an over sight and left off the list? I am not comfortable running a PC with a BIO version I no longer have access to. I only see the older BIOS versions on the support site.

  • Qosmio X300-13P - BIOS update

    Good afternoon,
I have installed on the laptop OS Windows 7 64-bit (before was Winodws Vista 32-bit). Also I have decided to update BIOS, but on a site I have found updating BIOS only for Windows Vista 64-bit and nothing for new OS - Windows 7.
My question: whether it is possible to establish on Windows 7 64-bit BIOS-update from Vista 64-bit and whether it is safe?
    Thanks.

    Hello
    > have found updating BIOS only for Windows Vista 64-bit and nothing for new OS - Windows 7.
This would only mean that BIOS update is pretested and designed for Vista 64bit. So this is the safe way to update the BIOS and I doubt it would be possible on Windows 7.
But as MasterG wrote, is this update necessary or just for fun? BIOS updates dont improve the performance, they only fix problems and if you dont have one, the update isnt necessary! ;)

[Athlon64] Failed Bios update with both Live Update and Dos version = badchecksum shutdown

Sometimes bios recovery is a long shot .
But the award bios v.6 is supposed to be able to do it if the bootblock is still intact.
Best way seems to be to strip it down to minimal configuration , disconnect all drives except floppy , one ram module , perhaps without video card also .

  • K9N Ultra BIOS update

Hi. I have K9N Ultra. I had Sempron 2800+ installed on it, and everything worked fine. Now I'd like to install Athlon64 X2 5600. BIOS POST said that it doesn't know processor's revision and won't work at all. I downloaded new BIOS from http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=253 (7250v3A.zip). Unpacked and copied Afud408.exe and A7250NMS.3A0 to disk C:\. Then I booted from win98 boot floppy and did the following actions:
    > c:\
    > Afud408.exe A7250NMS.3A0
BIOS update was successful, I turned off the computer, cleared CMOS with SW2 button and installed new Athlon64 X2 5600 CPU. Then I booted again.
The problem is that my system works unstable now. It may suddenly turn off in Windows when I play games. In Linux it may suddenly turn off when I use microphone in Skype.
Motherboard's version as it written on the board between PCI slots: MS-7250 Ver: 2.1.
    How to fix it? Thanks!

    Read >>Posting Guide<<
Reseat the CPU and make sure CPU heatsink is mounted properly and no overheating issue occur.
It is not overheated, because my system turns off immediately after test call in Skype (in Debian Linux). I can compile software for hours, using 100% of both CPU cores, and my system works stable, so I can conclude that it is not overheated.
    I have 2x1GB Kingston DDR2-800, GeForce 7600GS PCI-E, 2x250 GB SATA Seagate drives, Athlon 64 X2 5600 (AM2).

  • Dead dv6-7214 with MSATA C DRIVE after hp support assistant loaded new bios update. 5-18-13

I postponed a bios update because that makes me nervous. Apparently for good reason.
Today I let the nag proceed with bios update on my dv6-7214 running win8.
It said it was doing a system restore point, but that seems to have been useless.
The notebook had a black screen after an hour of "rebooting", so I powered down.
    Power on still black screen.
No response to any keys prerssed after power on, such as esc key.
I read several posts regarding needing to roll back bios updates, which doesn't say much for HP
that this is a recurring problem.
I am NOT getting a blue screen, not getting anything at all.
Is there a way to roll back a bios short of shipping it back to HP?
I did not write down the bios version, just trusted it was needed. Wont be letting hp support assistant to run anything else.
I guess i will uninstall HP support assistant, if i ever get my computer back to the point it can turn on.
Cant think of any software bug as bad as the one loaded by hp into my bios.
Anyone? How do a reset the bios with a totally unresponsive notebook?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Thanks chryig, but no that did not work.
Hp support emailed the same solution.
The dv6-7214 has an msata slot, which can be configured as C drive, which I did with an msata ssd.
The drive which came with the laptop was in the sata slot, as usual, but was not C drive.
I found someone posting identical problem, black screen, (not blue screen) no error messages, just bricked.
They also has an SSD C drive.
I tried temporarily moving the msata to the sata slot (with an adapter). This allowed the bios to complete
    its update.
So it isnt the Bios that is broken, but the Software to perform bios update is broken.
Update (bios) fails if the C drive is anywhere but the sata slot (or perhaps the c drive must be drive 0).
Hopefully HP will fix this problem. Many HP laptops are sold "upgraded" with additional disk via
value added reseller. Since there are only 2 sata slots and 1 msata slot the C drive can be in, it
should be possible for the update bios software to handle this small number of possibilities.
